please can any helpme to know what forum for my phone its the correct .. the number 1 or the number 2 ?
thanks for your help....
This is the right forum but I have bad news. Your phone is not currently rootable. The only way is if your bootloader says re locked and not locked. If it says re locked and the previous owner didn't change the cid back to at&t you can unlock the bootloader again and root.
As far as I know you're in the right place, but just to check, look for CPU info or something like that. That'll be easier to pinpoint.

let go of power but keep pressing volume down.
It works.
Or if you know how to use adb
plug in the phone to your computer and type adb reboot bootloader into a terminal window

The 2.20 firmware is not rootable or bootloader unlockable ... today.
Its possible that will change in the future, but not guaranteed.
If rooting and customization is important to you, then yes you want to sell or return that phone. Some places like electronics stores that might have phones that have been on the shelf since before August might be able to sell you one with older firmware that you can root. But, that is also not guaranteed.
Your only guarantee is a Samsung phone, such as the Galaxy S III (note the version sold on Verizon is locked down, unless you buy the "developer" version. Any other carrier version is easily rooted).

thanks... ok.. last question...
a few hours... until I put this post.. I have on my phone the version 1.85 but I see in this page on the HTC web page, and update...

so, I download the update and update my phone... then I go to settings-about phone and see the last update and see I have the 2.20 version...
did you think if I dont do that last update, my phone its been rootable ? I do wrong to update my phone ?
That update is what locked you out. If you left it on 1.85 you would have been able to root.
Bummer

I have a unlocked At&T HOX ...i think it is network unlocked...I did it by entering a code and the phone is working fine here in India with other networks..
My Android version is 4.0.3 and software is 1.85
I came to know that there is a update for HOX with 4.0.4 and i think 2.22...
My question is..as i unlocked it...If I update my mobile to this new version..does it get blocked\bricked....what are the safety measures to be taken..please explain...
I am scared to do as I don't have good enough knowledge...
Also, if the update is succesful am i supposed to unlock it again...if so, will the existing unlock code work??
Please someone guide me...
many thanks in advance...
You should unlock your bootloader first. It sounds like you are just sim unlocked. You also won't get an OTA if you are using a different carrier so you would need to run the RUU. I have never sim unlocked a phone before, but I would guess you might have to reenter your sim unlock code again.
I mainly took the 2.20 RUU for running on AT&T network, which I think was an improvement over 1.85. Since you are not on AT&T I would recommend unlocking your bootloader, and flashing a radio that's best suited for your carrier. If you take the 2.20 RUU you won't be able to flash radios anymore.

Are you currently rooted? I would unlock your bootloader and do SuperCID before doing any updates. That way you can always root your phone.

I wouldn't recommend 2.20. Once you run the 2.20 you have to flash the boot.img for any ROM manually (so you can't use restore a backup on the go without a computer) and you can't flash radios at all. Being that he is using this phone internationally, being able to flash radios may be pretty important.

what i said.
not being able to flash boot.img in recovery is the most annoying aspect of flashing the 2.20 ruu when you are already bootloader unlocked.

No I didn't root it...I got the phone and unlock code (Seller sent both to me)...once i got it just inserted other carrier sim and unlocked the phone...apart from this I didn't do anything...it is as it is...As another friend mentioned, I think I did SIM\Network Unlock...

I don't really know what to tell you. You should do some more research first. We told you already what you "should" do.
root, unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash custom rom, if you have trouble with network try different radios. do not take an ota or ruu, i am sure you will regret it.

we said many times not to try to run the RUU, specially not that one.
Some guy on Craigslist sold my not-very-smart sister an HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 for $250. After playing with it for 2 mins she did not realize that it is locked in demo (store) mode and probably stolen from a store. I've no idea to be honest. But she is out $250 w/ this demo mode phone and asking me to try to fix it.
I would like to try to flash this demo mode HTC 8X phone into a regular AT&T windows 8 phone or unlocked windows 8 phone.
I previously flashed a Windows 7.0 Samsung Focus phone w/ Mango through the wonderful instructions on this forum. I'm tempted to try it again, but I would appreciate any guidance on:
1. Finding the right ROM for a HTC 8X phone. It says:
OS version: 8.0.9905.12
Firmware revision: 1532.20.10012.502
Hardware revision number: 0002
PM23300 on the back.
I'm based in the US. Again, it is an 8X HTC in demo mode. I've no idea if it is security locked. Or how to even tell if it is security locked.
2. Basic instructions on how to flash it. I am intelligent enough to have gone from 7.0 Nodo phone to Mango w/ no issues following instructions on here. But I don't code (at least for the last 7-8 yrs)...
3. Any add'l steps, risks, cautions, caveats, etc. I should consider. Should I just not even bother w/ this phone, because I don't want to be responsible for bricking it... (ie. try to sell it on Ebay and recover some $)
Any help would be really appreciated! Thx.
There is an icon in the apps list called: "Windows Retail Mode"
And if I use it, it prompts me with RAC:
I assume it is some code to convert this phone to retail mode from demo mode. Any idea how to get the RAC password? It also allows me to try to enter an admin password.
It is probably locked as AT&T ships their 8X locked. However, you can check it out by entering the bootloader. Just power off your phone and hold volume down + camera and press power. Release power button only and it will enter the bootloader.
Also, please don't double post.
Enter bootloader and flash with RUU.

Dear Member...
Mine HTC 8X has CID-11111111.
After following forum, i tried to debrand the 8X.
Before trying to debrand, i did hard reset by pressing Vol - & Power On and then Vol +,Vol -,Power Button & Vol -.
Now the phone is not in demo mode. It looks like retail phone. No need to debrand the phone.
Thanks to the forum............
Hi
This is my first post here, and I'm hoping somebody could help me with some questions I have.
I have recently bought a "new" HTC one s on ebay, which may seem to have been a bad idea. I have later discovered that it is not a z520e (snapdragon s4), but the cheaper z560e (snapdragon s3) version, or villec2 running android 4.0.3.
Anyway, I have tried to upgrade the phone to the latest android version, using the built in phone function. However, this did not work and I got an error message telling: "We have determined that your phone may be running modified version of its system software...". In other words, I have the feeling that the phone is tampered with. Maybe the seller have unlocked in a way that makes it impossible to upgrade. Is there anything I can do to check this? And is there anything i can do to upgrade to android 4.1.1. ? I have tried a factory restore (phone function) with no luck. Or is the update only available to Asia?
Any information is very appreciated. I would like to know what the seller have done with this phone, information which I can use against the seller. Thanks!

When the phone is off, press and hold volume down then press power button (don't hold).
This will let you enter bootloader.
Top of the screen if it says unlocked, that is why you cannot update.
I'm guessing you do not know about fastboot commands/ adb commands and are not interested in learning to root and load custom ROMs to your phone.
But if it is unlocked and you want to relock it you just need to type in a command prompt: fastboot oem lock
that is assuming that the stock recovery hasn't been changed. (which isn't hard to flash)
In this guide you would want to download that fastboot.rar file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2175411
As this is a question, I've moved this thread to the Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting section.
In future, please remember to ask any questions in this section rather than in General.
Thanks

First of all, sorry for the posting in the wrong category.
You have right that i have no experience rooting android phones. However, i managed to jailbrake an iPhone 1st gen in the old days.. Anyway, my main concern is to try to find out what this phone is running, and if I should send it back or not. I paid 260 usd, so I would like the phone to be ok/not too much tampered version.
I got into fastboot / Hboot, and it says unlocked. What does unlocked actually means? I also got some red text when i started the phone afterwords telling that it was some non officially software that were not allowed to be distributet (went a bit fast).
I guess this is the reason why I cant update. Is there some more information I can take out of this Hboot? (I tried to find a hboot guide.) Any ideas why the seller sold me an unlocked phone? And is there something i should make sure of before I decide to keep the phone? I might send it back if there is some tampered things here.
Thanks again for you feedback!

And is there something i should make sure of before I decide to keep the phone? I might send it back if there is some tampered things here.
Thanks again for you feedback!

HTC allows to unlock the bootloader from their website. You are sent an unlock bin code. Unlocked means you can root the phone, you can put on a custom recovery to make backups of your phone and put custom ROMs on it.
If yours said unlocked, and right below that if it did not say tampered, then i believe you still have the stock recovery.
you just need to download fastboot files to your pc then you can lock your bootloader.
you go back into bootloader and plug your phone into computer (phone will change from fastboot to fastboot usb)
from your fastboot folder you hold down shift and right click the mouse, choose the option to open a command prompt.
from there you just type
fastboot oem lock

Thanks for the reply!
Yes, i cannot see any "tampered" below the *** unlcoked *** line in HBOOT.
I tried the recovery in the HBOOT but got a red triangle. I guess i need to to this from an PC (I have macbook at home, or do I need the Andorid SDK on my computer maye..), and download the right android image etc. I also guess the factory reset will not help me either (probably the same function I can choose from the settings menu in android.).
Now my question is if I should try to change it to a z520e. I guess i will get some more battery life with the snapdragon s4. But not sure how much, and if its worth the hassles with return shipping etc.
Anyways, thank you very much for the information!
please help me. i dont know what to do with this cell... anyhow i managed to get it into this screen...
it would keep restarting after displaying htc quietly brilliant.
i have no idea what was done to this cell as i got it lying around in my closet.
What do you mean you got it lying around in my closet? You don't know what you did to it in the past?
Sent from my Evita
no actually my cousin might have screwed up my cell and kept it back...

Well I think the first thing you should do is talk to your cousin and find out exactly what he did to the device, then you can report back here.

is there any other way through which we can come to know what can be done??? such as an odin thing which i used to do in my samsung note 1 or 3???

To know what needs to be done I need to know the history of the device. Odin is Samsung only, there is no HTC equivalent. Who got the phone to this point, you or your cousin? You need to find out what he's done.
Sent from my Evita
Well, one problem is that the screen is cracked.
Seriously though, the phone for some reason or other cannot load into the OS, and is stuck in bootloader. Other than that, not much else can be determined if you don't know the history of what was done.

Nope. You need to know the history of the device. There is an HTC-specific recovery utility. But running it on a device with unknown history can brick the phone permanently. Particularly since the device is definitely tampered (as shown on the first line of the screen).
Also, the phone's IMEI is personal information, and should not be posted on the internet. You should edit the photo to hide the IMEI.
Unlock your bootloader. Sometimes if you have custom installed or fragments of a custom ROM on the device it will boot directly into your bootloader. After unlocking your bootloader you can install a recovery image and sideload a ROM.
yes i asked my brother and he is saying he doesnt remember what he had done to it... if anyone can show me a way to do something ill try it... or else should i take it to some shop to get it fixed.... which would cost me... but first i wanted to get my hands over d expert advise of u all
Return the phone to stock and never let your brother touch any electronic device of yours again.

This phone is in a dangerous state.. Running the RUU in this state could brick the phone (make it permanantly unusable without a jtag). Though typically that is how one would return a phone to stock.. to be honest, the safest thing to do would be to unlock the bootloader, flash a rom, S-OFF and then return it to stock. If these seem like foreign terms to you, you have a lot of reading to do. Your phone is in a tough spot right now ESPECIALLY not knowing the history regarding what was done. You would need the bootloader unlock token to reunlock that phone if you don't have it, there's very little chance of safely returning that phone to stock.

Brother or cousin, or both? It seems you don't even know who has been messing with your phone. And the person(s) messing with it don't have a clue what they are doing. So its no wonder the phone is in the state it is.
Agree with above that RUU is risky. Better to s-off the phone first.
Thank u all for the prompt replies, I have played with Samsung but not with HTC. But I can try to unlock the bootloader n turn d s-off. Can I get an step guide for HTC. The thing was I have many cellphone that I buy and use it very rarely. Majority I use is my note 3.

There are detailed instructions available at htcdev for unlocking your bootloader. Once you've done that you need to flash a custom recovery, then you can flash root, then you can get s-off. Check my How-To Guide For Beginners thread, the link is in my signature.

Every device manufaccturer/model has different root methods. If you want to root the phone, you have to put the time in to learn the correct process. There is no shortcut. You won't find a step-by-step guide for the entire process, because of the different carrier version and firmware updates (root method, etc. differs for each). But all the resources you need are sticky at the top of either this Q&A forum section, or General section.
hi i tried to get to unlock the bootloader from the HTCDEV site. first of all the HTC ONE X wasnt on the list so i selected other supported devices
then followed the steps and got the following error
Error Code: 160.
Error Reason: MID Not Allowed.
now what does this mean??
That means you have the original CID still, which means you should be able to run the 3.18 RUU without any problems. Check your CID by issuing this fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
Sent from my Evita
yes i had issued this command after finding it in one of the websites and this was the result which i got
cid: CWS__001
or cid: c??__001
i forgot the exact two letter after C. i think it was CWS
You have the original at&t CID. That means you can run the 3.18 RUU without having to unlock the bootloader and get s-off first.

I can't enter recovery (Your device is corrupt . It can't be trusted and may not work properly) .

I tried that . I get some errors . I will post the log later .
You said earlier it came like this? Did you buy this phone and then you turned it on and this happened? It's very important you explain as best as you can so I can help you properly.
The phone was simlocked . Someone unlocked it (he unlocked the bootloader and then unlocked it with a box) . The phone was then sold to a customer who said that he wanted to update OTA . Then the phone became bricked .

If you try to unlock the bootloader with fastboot flashing unlock does it work or do you get an error? If you can't unlock the bootloader and flash the full factory image, you will likely have to try to get it replaced by Google.

I can't unlock the bootloader (OEM unlock is not activated) .
There is no possibility to flash it even if the bootloader is locked ?

If you brick your phone with a locked bootloader it wasn't your fault. Nothing you can do to it, can't root it, can't mod it. Just like any other locked phone. If it dies, send it to them for warranty.

No, basically everything you described was a terrible idea and it makes zero sense to intentionally lock the bootloader of a phone you just finished hooking up to a black box to forcibly modify software.
Never lock the bootloader of a modified device, that is just a given.

They absolutely left you with the possibility to repair it.
Then you turned that possibility off and locked the bootloader...

If you lock your bootloader with custom firmware what happens exactly? I know unlocking wipes the device but I can't remember what happened the last time I had to lock my bootloader. I've read it doesn't wipe. I was doing things too quickly to remember for myself..

Well there is that and then there's the fact that the pixel is carrier unlocked. Sounds like this guy had no clue what he was doing with this phone. Also like to know what "box" you hooked the phone up to
Has the original poster tried to unlock bootloader again? The pic in the OP shows fastboot. That looks potentially hopeful. Hope that OTA wasn't 7.1.2
Hopefully the seller was legit, maybe the phone is still under warranty??? Waiting sucks, but if it's under warranty you can fix it for free. Might be worth the wait. If not if that's not an option...
I'm guessing this is a Verizon phone? If so, start worrying, bit don't quit, unless you are prepared to spend more money on a new phone. As long as you have fastboot, you have options.
