Touch Button Issue HTC One S - Communication campaign "Operation Rolling Thunder"
Hi all,
If you ended up on this thread, it probably means that like many others, including me, you have experienced the so-called "Home button issue" on your HTC One S. To sum it up very briefly, it happens mostly when you're on EDGE and the signal is weak: what then happens is that all the sudden, your phone simulates rapid presses of the Home Button, leading to your display switching constantly between the main Home screen and the "helicopter view" showing the 7 home screens. When it happens, the buttons become useless, and you cannot use your phone anymore. Needless to say it is a really annoying matter...
As you may know, there are many threads that report the issue in many different countries, which leads to believe that hundreds if not thousands of users are having the same issue... XDA has a very complete thread on the matter, which focuses on grouping people reports, hypothetical fixes, leads, ideas, comments etc. I strongly suggest you check it out if you haven't done so yet after you're done reading this post. Now, if you followed up on this issue, you will soon notice that many users have reported the problem to HTC, starting some months ago. The results were nowhere near satisfying:
No reply at all to their complaints;
Automatic emails from customer support telling people to restart or factory reset their phones, even though they had explained that they had already tried this in their mails;
Requests to send their phones in for repair. After weeks, customers would get their phones returned, with the exact same issue still present;
Emails from HTC stating that they were (finally) aware of the issue and that a patch would be released in the coming days/weeks. That was months ago, nothing has happened as of yet...
Bottom line: Nothing happened, the matter is still not solved, and we are all still stuck with devices that can stop working at any given time if the signal starts going down. Inacceptable. Time to act!
​Operation Rolling Thunder
Apparently, HTC needs a little "motivation" so solve this issue, so here is my suggestion (I discussed the idea with some people on SneakyGhost's thread, link to exact page here):
In order to make ourselves heard, we need to join in a combined effort to attract attention of HTC through the media. I therefore started posting negative reviews of the HTC One S on numerous websites that review or sell the product. On each of them, I left a comment reporting this issue and advising people not to buy the phone until the matter was resolved.
...And here is where I need your help: I ask you to take a little time off and start doing the same. I will try to make it as easy and fast for you as possible.
The goal is to "spam" review and sales websites with so many negative reviews that the phone's average note will sink to the bottom. Thus, when people will check out the phone, they will see a quite good editor's note, but a very low users note. They will most probably then read users reviews and find out about the issue, which will lead them to delay their purchase or switch to another model or brand... They will talk/comment about it, and so on.
If enough people in various countries participate to the action, we will make quite some noise, and I am convinced that HTC will hear about it. Actually, my plan is to let them know asap that such an action is ongoing. I want them to be aware of this, and I believe we should regularly "invite" them to read our reviews on famous websites, and let them know that we will not stop until the patch is released. No promise of future upcoming patches will stop this action. The only way for them to stop us from spamming websites with unhappy comments will be the release of a patch that adresses the issue. Only then will we stop our action and edit our reviews/comments.
Operation Rolling Thunder: Phases
Phase One:
Leave posts/reviews/comments on famous review and/or sales websites
Send updates regularly to HTC about progress. If no patch after 1-2 weeks, proceed to phase two.
Phase Two:
Send emails to the carriers/tech supports of respective countries
Send regular updates to HTC about progress. If no patch after 1-2 weeks, proceed to phase three.
Phase Three:
Send emails to the media: bloggers, press...
Send regular updates to HTC about progress. If no patch by then... Improvise.
Now, I have already started with phase one on my own, and if you want things to change, I hereby invite you to join me in my effort to "motivate" our friends at HTC.

Some advice when it comes to reviewing (if I may...):
A general note of no more than one star (less if possible) would be appropriate for this phone as long as the bug persists, don't you think?
Don't be hostile/rude... You are probably pissed by now and tired of waiting, but try to keep things civil. It will add to the credibility of this action and benefit the results. We don't want to sound like raving idiots, but rather like a determined group of people who want to make things happen...
I believe that it writing in the title of your review that this phone would deserve a better note if the issue was gone might help encourage HTC to provide a fix. Just stating the HTC One S is a **it phone will probably not encourage them so much, rather the opposite.
Please insert a link to this thread and SneakyGhost's in your reviews, so people can read about the issue and know what we are talking about. They should know that this is a legitimate effort, not some loose and unmotivated ranting...
In order to keep things fair, I plan to edit/adapt my reviews when HTC has fixed the issue. I hope you'll do the same...
Let's act like gentlemen: the phone wouldn't deserve such a bad note if it wasn't for this bug. Let's remember that when a fix removes the issue.

Some advice on speeding things up:
You'll always have to create a user on the websites you post on. Thankfully, it usually requires a username and a mail adress. No big deal, one minute tops! Facebook login works too sometimes...
This is how I do when a website has the HTC One S several times for sale (aka Amazon): I search for the HTS One S, then sort from highest price down in order to avoid cases and accessories. When the list appears, I open every HTC One S page in a new tab. I then go to the reviews page for each of them and start copy/pasting. It took me barely 10 minutes to review 20 HTC One S on an Amazon!
Don't comment on somebody else's review, make your own. That way, you can give a (1-star) note.
You may post on French post even if you're not French. Trust in my post

One thing I deem of major importance is making the spreadsheet reflect a true picture of the situation out there. That'll be only possible if we reach as many people as possible. So I think having the sheet linked to the product directly it would get us closer to that goal. At last 430 potential reviewers can spread it quite far and fast I guess.

Have you ever heard of avaaz.org? They've gotten the most brilliant campaigning concept I know of. They managed to get a million signatures in 24h for some campaigns...

Agreed. How do you suggest we achieve this? I was planning on PMing those who left their usernames in your sheet. Do you have a quicker solution?

Yep, heard about them. I think we can start as planned, and if we need some help because things aren't going fast enough, we could find some inspiration/help over there. Yet I think that even a few hundred people can achieve a lot, if they do the posting properly. As I said earlier, most product pages only have maybe a dozen reviews, so our posts will definitely tilt the balance.

I'm sorry but is this really a real issue? My whole family (not including baby brother) has the oneS were all rooted and on different ROMs(my sister just prefers stock though) and none of us have had this problem... not even once. I truly believe it is not fair for people to write bad reviews on phones because of one issue a select few are having... and ones has 4g why are you using edge? Leave a one star rating? How about you get a new phone and leave this beauty to us?

I have two devices and one is ok.
I think there's people though who got a return from service with a new phone 4 times and the issue is still there. Look over at the Vodafone UK forums.
Since the facts show that it is spread over all production batches and all software variants and also even happens on the 850/1900mhz band, although far less frequent, we came to believe that this issue can theoretically affect every unit.
Those who do not suffer it are considered lucky ones for now.
I am aware that this is all looking very grim but I'm sure it really isn't. Just HTC's response is dark and grim.
It's mainly about putting more pressure on HTC since they have fobbed us of since basically April now.
I am very very sorry if this concerns you as happy user. Basically the idea for such a campaign already came up at around the end of July when I and zoesdad where discussing options but we opted to hold off such actions and also discourage others from doing so out of fairness reasons.
We have now reached a span of six month nearly consisting of nothing but empty promises and denial. It is just enough now.
Also keep in mind that we will change the reviews and take back everything we can as soon as HTC commits to the issue in the shape of a real fix.

I'm really happy for you, I just wish all of us would have the same things to report, trust me.
I haven't enjoyed spending half my day and my whole night all the way to 5am writing this thread, the reviews, the posts, the sheets and forms, the advices, the research and all the posting. I would have loved to just sit back in my garden and toy with my phone (which is a beauty, no argument there!) Unfortunately I can't, because of this issue. I had it no later than today when using the GPS, which would just disappear and the screen would go crazy. No way to rely on it...
As SneakyGhost pointed out, we unfortunate ones feel neglected and are disappointed by HTC's lack of action. Thus the action.
Remember this:
- We plan to adjust our reviews as soon as the bug has been mended
- We clearly point out that the bad review is due to this bug
- We urge people to remain civil
You might want to read what I replied to maek_it_happen a few posts higher, and who was offering to help even if he did not have the issue (thanks again): we do not encourage this, because we want our claim to be justified and forwarded only by people who suffer from this issue. I believe that is fair, no?
And about using 4G instead of EDGE: Man, don't you think I would do so if I could? I don't choose to connect to the slowest network available. Maybe I do so because there's nothing else around... Btw, the technical sheet of our phone clearly states that is compatible to EDGE. So...

You got promises from HTC? Truth full though they support their phones better then most my sidekick never received an update from Samsung. My droid didn't from Motorola. Holy**** my HTC oneS did though. Give it some time you can't expect to fix an edge data problem when everyone uses 3g/4g right away lol. Anyways I'll go back to my thread as to not clutter your guys thread we can argue about the ethics there if you like.

Trust me, no real harm done, this is a mere try to threaten a giant. It will probably just show that we are serious but never bring down the sales figures. That is a dream. But a dream worth the while. And mate, it might help us at the end of the day.
HTC promises fixes since two month at least, has released 3 updates (one of them just being a voda) of which each manipulated the issue in a slightly different way and looking at it in sequence gives the impression of HTC actually testing a fix on us. Which is so not right. We are not getting paid as beta testers.
There is one user on a German forum claiming he got an ETA for the final fix, named the 8th of October. I think thats just bullsh from either him or the agent he spoke to. Anyhow: if there is such a thing as an ETA, its just so unfair to not let us know and let us fry in our pains here.
I think many of us would willingly test stuff out and help to get this resolved asap but its just like we are treated like idiots since month. It just makes me feel so stupid and i ask myself why do i do all this data collection, analyzing, thinking about solutions, chatting with people to try desperate measures ( Tecardo already nearly bricked his unit trying to figure out a fix on his own)...
Its just such an EFFIN pain!

My phone resorted to locked buttons variant of the issue all freakin day today! kept unlocking it so i could - maybe - use it for a few seconds until the buttons locked up again...
And honestly, i am short of giving up, selling it on ebay and buying a HOX instead on Ebay Local markets every day. Every Day i keep thinking about this but i wont for two reasons: i have some honor left and i wont sell THIS POS to anyone in that state. The other reason: there is no other phone i would feel comfortable with so much. The HOX gets close but honestly, its made from plastic and its not nearly as nice. The phone is too big too.

This whole campaign sounds like a bad idea. Using threats to get your way is not the proper way to get people to listen. All the and reviews will do is discouraged people from buying the one s and if this happens HTC will offer less support. Why spoil the dozen if one egg is bad

And: we think we don't threaten. We rather believe we haven been overly fair to a company that is not fair to us. We have all kept very very quiet. Most have not rated the phone or reviewed it yet because most expect this to not hit the majority and most did not take action to not spoil the dozen. We have quietly dealt with HTC support. But now it becomes apparent more and more that HTC support just does nothing, zip, nada. It is a real joke. Not a funny one though. So what this is, is that we are no longer wanting to be quiet. We want everyone else to know that there is problems with these phones. Potential ones. It is not just all candy.
and believe me, the matter has been discussed between us up and down the argument ladder since beginning of august. I said that already. It will NOT permanently damage sales. Naming it a bad idea means you believe in it having more effect than we do.
Trust me, it will NOT have such a major impact. We will never manage to rate it down on all relevant sites. All that will happen is a little too much salt in the pie.
It will draw attention to the problem. Not more. And once HTC acts correctly, the reviews will be all praise and hallelujah.
No whining. We had enough mercy. This should have been sorted at least 3 month ago. The issue became apparent in April. Now we have september. Which is closing in on october. So that makes it getting close to 2 quarters of a year. I and many others reckon one quarter to fix a very serious issue that hits hundreds of people more than adequate.
We don't even have near the resources HTC has but in the same 5 and a half month we got very near the source of the problem. The only thing that keeps a few people from finally fixing it is the goddamn Security HTC put on the phones.
So, ironically, we can't even fix it ourselves even though we probably could because HTC doesn't allow us too.
How would you feel in that situation? I think we act very rational, very well discussed and very controlled.
This will NOT damage anyone.

Let me make a wild guess here: I am willing to bet that you don't have this issue. Am I right? So you don't have the bad egg. Now imagine you did...
Because if you did, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't say this, especially after having written to HTC for support and gotten an automatic reply, or none at all, or having returned your phone and waited just to end up with the same result etc etc.
Again: if your phone works perfectly, congratulations! I wish I was in your shoes. But I'm not, and neither are many others. So, after having tried every other way, we end up here. If you have a better suggestion, I will gladly take it. Maybe exchange your phone for mine, how about that?
Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything here. Those who want to take part in the action probably have good reason to, because spending time creating user accounts and posting on websites is not that fun. Trust me, I know Yet if people do it, it means that they have a pretty strong motivation to do so, and no other choice.
Bottom line: I am looking forward to enjoying my One S fully, like you probably do, when this issue is fixed. But I will do what it takes to get there!
If you cannot understand this, fair enough. I really hope you won't have to share my experience.

And, no, it's not inappropriate as JGUI continues to use this board to SELL his software that is riddled with bugs, etc.
The purpose is to warn others of potentially damaging software that could force them to hard-reset their PDA's and lose information.
This is an information exchange and this is an attempt to consolodate complaints about multiple JGUI applications.
JGUI creates new threads when he's tired of seeing everyone's complaints. This way he can evade bad publicity with bad software--just create a new thread! (see below)

I tend to agree that if JGUI keeps trying to use this Forum to sell his software that he should expect others (who feel that they have a legitimate complaint) to make comments.
I've also had problem with his 'freeware' software, but didn't choose to air my opinions about it.

How old are you? 13. Grow up. He's entitled to try sell whatever he wants, within the realms of the law. As he stated, people don't HAVE to buy. There are time limited demos to try. I'm not sticking up for his actions, and I don't agree with releasing software unless it is properly tested. But it's best practise to back up any computer on a regular basis. This includes Pocket PC's. And yes, software that is installed on any computer could have detrimental results but that's the risk you take from an unknown supplier without doing your research.

If you clicked on the title of this post, you can't really be complaining how it's childish. The title is a very good description of what you'll find, and it's nothing that you shouldn't be expecting.
For the uptight morons that really take this guy's software and some mishap seriously it's a good place to vent, and to me it's FUNNY.
Especially since really early on in the whole debacle the guy had lectured me about his success in software development

So i´d vote for this thread closed, as it is already clear that JGUI makes bad programs with alot of bugs, and don´t care about fixing them.
Altough, i REALLY SINCERELY don´t like that he is trying to SELL his softer in here! There is already TO many sites trying to sell people software, and this is not the place. Imagine every developer doing the same thing. It would RUIN this forum completely!
i am also "automatic hard reset victim" of my|phone 1.4 and i fully agree to all the claiming about jguis software. anyway i think it is a fact that the level of this forums discussion gets lowered by threads like this. so i would suggest the following to webmaster(s):
1. please close duplicate claiming threads (on the same subject)
2. bann any kind of advertising into a special section of this forum. this should be the only place where commercial messages are allowed.
issue 2. should prevent that people spreading commercials all over the forum and annoying users which would result in making the leave the forum -> that means end of the forum. wouldn't be the first time happening and it really would be a shame.

havent really used anything from him apart from that free cellphone thingy which at times reported a signal str of 105%

Hm, hm, hm... before we make that a discussion about childish behavior I like to re-focus on what would need to be the content.
JGUI develops commercial software for PocketPC.
In several cases people buying his products ended up with significant problems - me being one of them about 2 years ago. (long enough to calm my temptation, bur present enough to understand what people are complaining about )
Attempts of JGUI to deliver corrected versions failed or even lead to additional problems.
There is two ways to look at this:
Firstly users need to understand that it is better for them to use a demo version before purchasing a product. Gee, nobody buys a car without testdriving it... is the small price of a PocketPC program justification to miss out on a demo version? If so, the only thing you complain about is your own carelessness :shock:
Especially inexperienced and new PocketPC expect the same level of quality from a software product that they get when buying Office for their desktop computer. There is education required to reset expectations - in writing like in a thret like this and / or in wasted payments.
And I like to add a thing: I'm surprised that some here brand the complaints as childish but not the way how the forum is being misused by JGUI. I would think it's just fair to stop JGUI advertising here in the first place...

I’m *so* sorry, but apparently I need to make 8 nōnsense postings here before I am allowed to REPLY TO A THREAD I HAVE ALREADY POSTED TO in a development forum to answer a user’s question about my software (WTF?!). Two – oh the joy, can’t even _do_ that, why oh why can’t you guys just use a mailing list… I hate web fora.
I have zero interest in _using_ xda myself (except maybe on a device at work…), but I develop for Android occasionally (the system leven, below Java™), so I do not know AT ALL what to do in the non-developer part. And I don’t want to ask a question even, but provide an authoritative answer… believe me I’m qualified enough.

I think that it was discovered fairly recently that there are some serious potential incompatibilities in the latest unofficial rom (3991), and the devs, and others have had their hands full trying to help people. I don't know firsthand, but I imagine between this forum, the irc channel, and PMs, they must helped a ton of people.
Then the woot deal happened this week, and everybody probably worried about multiples of that, so I think the posts/threads about "be careful", were just proactive to try to help users avoid problems.

I'm a "Wooter" and came over here to get info on ROM/firmware builds for the device. I'm a current unhacked Archos 70 owner, and have had Samsung Captivate and HTC Evo 4G as well.
I haven't really seen _much_ condescension from this community on the Woot influx. Just some tongue-in-cheek "there goes the neighborhood" and "here come the n00bs" stuff.
I'm ready to admit that I am a n00b with the Viewsonic device, but welcome any help and "ROMs for Dummies" tutorials from this community.
My device should be here on Tuesday, so I hope to see a built and optimized 2.3 firmware package by Wednesday. :-D

That may be somewhat true but when I first bought my GTab and I got it from Office Depot and came to this thread I experienced the same unfriendly treatment. Most are just trying to learn and better GTab. Not here for confrontation, argument or unnecessary challenge.
To the original poster, I get what you are saying and don't feel singled out because you are Woot. Some here don't make newcomers feel welcome. Why I don't know. After awhile (and it should not exist at all) it tapers off, hopefully for you more sooner than later. Enjoy your GTab.
I'm a wooter, too. My woot gtab should arrive tomorrow. That said, you have to admit that the woot deal is probably the single factor that brought/will bring a significant higher people to this site. And please understand that many of us have spent years dealing with the non-tech savy. We know how the typical non-tech savy behave.
What I've generally seen so far is a lot of "please read the FAQ's" and "please use search" and "please read the instructions thoroughly when modding". I've also done a few tongue in cheek comments, but if anything else I'm not being condescending -- if anything else I'm a little nervous at the amount of users that might be coming. Everyone was a n00b once.
When new users come in small dribs and drabs, I think the forum has been able to handle it. But if there are potentially hundreds of new users in the next week, it's going to be complete madness.
I've actually re-written ALL my main posts, with Woot users in mind. If anything else, the Wooters have gotten me off my sorry arse and gotten me to really look at my instructions and go through them with a fine-tooth comb to ensure that stuff is clear.
One of the other reasons for my own temporary push of posts is because it's EOM and I may have a smaller footprint this week (work stuff). So I'm spouting my concerns now before my visibility is lessened.

Thanks, Roebeet and I am laughing. It is always rough when you are starting out with new equipment even if it is functioning properly. Throw unstable into the mix and you will have tens of thousands trying to figure out stability real fast.
Also, I cruised Amazon's tabs yesterday and they have GTab as number one best selling on their site. The buyer's reviews all point to XDA and immediately modding your tab. I'm not kidding. This tab was a sleeper because most tech mags--cnet, pc mag, pc world, etc. gave it bad reviews. However, when people got their hands on one (from at a store, friend, peer, colleague, family member or such) it was a different story. The general public is now starting to respond favorably to GTab. You may get even more traffic.
I like your spirit though, you are good people. Look at this community as the future "tech forum facebook" 500 million and counting... Hey it is a blessing when you have multiple mainstream sites throwing traffic your way. You don't have to work at SEO rankings. Please translate that to some of the other people who are here already that make newcomers feel unwelcome. The term wooters is not nice. What happened to "new G Tab owners"? Some egos here need to be minimized on the task bar or forced close. -Peace, mostly this is a good site offering a wealth of information.

the people who have been on here, and owned a gtab for a while are the people who are more apt to purchase bleeding-edge gadgets, and are generally more savy and aware of potential problems..
Some may be viewing the "wooters" as uninformed consumers looking for the best deal ..

I know this is off topic but couldn't help and notice you're a Razorbacks fan. Good to see another Arkansas guy here on the forums. Where are you located? I'm in Conway right now attending UCA. I'm also another wooter waiting for his G-Tablet!
Maybe us Wooters could be put to use. I'd be glad to donate some time to work on a wiki, for example, although I've never actually put one together. Surely there is something that new board members could do.
Sorry for the long post but I must echo the sentiments of others. It is not the intent of most to make new members feel unwelcome, as I can remember when I first got the Gtabs for my wife and myself after finding the community support of XDA. Even in the smaller Gtab/XDA community, members had problems and needed to be helped, many would not use the search function and just ask repeatedly about issues that had already been addressed and resolved. Now that Android tablets are coming to light with the heavily advertised Xoom, the fear is simply that thanks to the overwhelming response to WOOT the common questions will appear again and again as our great forums expand to receive more and more new members. I'm sure that there is no animosity or malice intended, just an attempt to make new members aware of possible pitfalls and resolutions. More users will make this forum and the Gtab better and better.

I don't think the majority of the users are treating Wooters as idiots, just trying to make their Gtab experience a good one. R emember that when most of us started adding ROMs there weren't several stock builds and several dozen flavors of ROMs to choose from. Also the users that experienced severe interaction problems were bleeding edge guys who expected issues and were willing to work through them. Based on many of the new owners questions, many are expecting to load a new ROM and have an ipad killer. As you read the rooting instructions don't skip the " Risk" section.
Its not just going to be the wooters. Circut City and Tiger Direct selling it for $299. there will be alot of wooters, Tigers and Circiters I guess. This forum is going to explode soon with folks. I dont think people are condesending but I think alot of folks are nerveous about the amount of people coming in here by next weekend.
Here's the biggest drawback I see.
1.) Influx of lazy forum users who post a question without searching. Those new threads go unanswered or with more knowledgeable members say "Use the search". Now, non-lazy forum users come in, with their newly purchased GTab, hit the search, and they end up with 3 pages of useless threads as listed before.
2.) The knowledgeable members need to work on concentrating the info into ONE FAQ or Wiki style. Right now, the number of stuck threads is getting a tad ridiculous. When there are 12 stuck threads that say "READ FIRST", it falls into the same category as the saying "If everything is high priority, nothing is".
I almost wish we could lock the ROMs from being downloaded, until someone has READ 10 threads (as opposed to being able to post in the dev section prior to posting 10 times).
In saying all that, I read a lot before I bought my tab, I read a few threads multiple times AFTER I bought my tab, to make sure I was doing it right. I just wish others had the same patience and diligence.

When I re-wrote my ROM posts, I moved the downloads nearer to the bottom, on purpose, with the hopes that new users would read through the post first. Probably unlikely, but worth a shot.

Great device- Great people here Talked work into picking up 9 for the techs .
Selling my personal one and picking up a xoom (got a work one comming now )
I have seen the n00b bashing on this forum before... Sometimes I sympathise with both sides though....
I have seen where the whole first page is 75% I have bricked my tablet HELP!!! and then someone else posts same thing again....
Other times I have seen a single Help post only to be met with USE THE SEARCH N00b!!!... When the issue actually wasn't something answered completely before..
SO I think we all need to take a chill pill (except Roebeet, He is totally exempt and allowed to throw a fit if he wants he he) And just deal with answering the same question 5k times . The returns from it should be pretty good. The larger the community the more developers etc we will also inherit
I am a fellow wooter and am looking forward to getting my G tablet tomorrow. I was pretty intent on doing a mod but with recent posts I am re considering that decision. I just hope that Honeycomb is released for the device eventually, although I will not hold my breath.
Roebeet, I think you should look at this as an opportunity. I have not even received my tablet yet but I have already donated $5 to you. There are over 10,000 new owners who could all use your advice and your expertice. If they all do the same you could have a nice side career. I hope I will never have to bother you for any assitance. I think I will stay stock for a while and then maybe I will try a ROM. I am not a total newb, I did manage to successfully root my Droid and install Gingerbread, but I am always squeamish about modding devices. You can fail a heck of lot easier than you can succeed. But if I do ever need help I think that you are the guy!
Think I am more on the fence about modding also due to the low cost of thbis tablet. If you do something to it you cant return it for a new one at woot. Woot doesnt really do returns easy and if they do take it back you get your money back not a new one. then if you want another you will have to get lucky looking for another deal ( like at Tiger Direct this weekend) or buy one for $400. For me thats too risky to just play around with it.
ALso as for honeycomb on here. Probally a better chance that it will happen considering that there are 10-15 thousand more G Tablet owners now then there were last week. They dont support devices for long if they dont sell but this G tablet is now a big seller. * Woot-Circut Ciity-Tiger Direct etc).

Well I think those who might feel that way, need to do a reality check. It is really is hard being a noob and everyone starts out as one.
Yes, I am a deal hunter but hardly an uninformed consumer. Hopefully people are aware of what they are getting themselves in for, but true there will be some who have no clue.
From what I have seen/read, the seniors and mods have been good and fair, but like other blogs, the search sucks and people get scared/frustrated so patience and education will be required. It's tough reading a zillion posts to find an answer.
Just my two cents.
FYI I've been a software developer for 25+ years and was literally doing ROMs (as in burning images to silicon) before the idea of smart phones or tablets existed. I worked at a small company named "Poqet Computer" (hence the poqeteer alias), the first pocket sized PC. Unfortunately it was way before its time and like other startups... Died. Also unfortunately that has very little to do with this piece of hardware... So please be kind to this and all other noobs.

I haven't decided what I plan to do about my GTAB yet, but I have decided on what I plan to do about my participation here in the GTAB section on XDA - I am retiring my GTAB XDA mods after this weekend. Most likely, they will be moved to, including TwoTapsX which I plan to reactivate for at least the short term. I will probably lurk here and post, but I won't be an active modder - I will do that on. Basically, I will do the same thing here that I do on Xoom forum, on XDA.
Basically, my character has been attacked repeatedly, in the last month -- two people even went so far as to say that they only reason I make threads here (i.e. my recent Viewsonic one) is so I can incite people and then convince them to give me more donations. Anyone who's been around long enough knows how long it took me to even accept donations, as I was always very hesitant. As a music lover, I actually mentioned one of the things I purchased with everyone's generosity, and some people obviously thought I was "rubbing it in" (I'm using their words). But I was really just doing it to say "thank you".
First off, if you agree with this assessment of my character and you did send me a donation, please PM me with your email address and I will refund whatever donation you had sent to me, with no questions asked. If you feel you made a mistake, then I certainly don't want to keep your money.
I had actually pulled my donations page yesterday before today's blowout, but obviously there are people here who think I still have ulterior motives in what I do. If this were my day job and someone attacked me in this way, I would take this very personally and this is no different. I am very hurt by these negative remarks and if it wasn't for the users here, I would just pack up and leave without even saying anything - but that's not fair to you, if you use my mods.
Besides the insinuation that I only incite people to get donations, I've also been attacked that I don't frequent the IRC enough when users have issues with my mods (in other words, that I don't do enough post-production support). Also that my concerns about the new Woot! users last month were unfounded and that nothing needed to be done (yes, I got a lot of flack for those remarks - @Woot users, what I did was asked for a FAQ or updated Wiki so that way when the users came pouring in they wouldn't be asking the same questions over and over) and that my latest posts about Viewsonic are just "whining" (again, exact words) that have no place here. And lastly that when I get upset that my character is being attacked, that I'm just overreacting and should just "calm down".
Why am I writing all this? Because I just want everyone here to know the reason WHY I'm doing this.
Now assuming that the moderators don't ban me outright because of my comments here, my plan is to wind things down this weekend. I will setup threads in with TNT Lite, gADAM and TwoTapsX, and then just link from here to there. And if the mods don't want me to do that, then I will just erase my first posts and just write that they've been moved to, and that will be the end of it.
I want to apologize to everyone who doesn't completely understand my reasons for doing this. My mods will still exist, but this way XDA can disavow all knowledge of what I do, if they see fit to. As for my recent threads, I will take a backseat from now on and treat myself as a low-activity user. I will still post, but again not as an active modder, and assuming I don't end up getting banned of course.

With that being said, you shouldn't leave because two people are being clowns. The Woot / Tiger Direct / cheaper sales of this tablet elsewhere have brought in a new audience, of which a small (but sizable) percentage are morons. Modders here are having to put huge cigarette-size warning labels on their mods because people are mindlessly bricking their tablets, a whole slew of stupid, repeatedly answered questions have been posted, posting in wrong forums... this has just started about a month or two ago.
Consider staying, please. Shirk off the animals, they're not worth your frustration. I'll follow your postings wherever you are, I just want you to stay here because of how strong the community is, and you're a big part of it.
i pretty new to the whole seen, only having brought my gtab bout 2 mos ago. i purchased it because of finding and reading xda. ive modded alot of stuff in the past (xbox, psp, razors etc) and havent done any modding since the older i got the lazier i got. i dont know you roebeet but i gotta tell ya, there are ALOT of trolls on xda. alot. if someone called you out over some nonsense then i dont blame ya for migrating, as i much like you it seems, have little patience for nonsense. i will prob lurk on over to those other sites, because quite frankly, im impressed and enjoy the work you do. as well as gojimi and the others. trolls suck. im behind ya 100%, peace!

I'm not a developer but did read this already on a posting at Google+.
But you are right, moving into that direction would be very bad.
Some people think they can be rude because they stay anonymous.
Its something that happens more and more these days on the internet.
I realize it's impossible - there are 12 year olds who probably run rampant.
Seems like there is SOMETHING that can be done.
I'm as Pro-Android as they come. But at times it feels like starting a relationship with a beautiful boy/girl only to find they come with a sack load of emotional baggage.

I have seen that there are some stupid comments on the market... But not so extreme as to take down your app...
Some users is just plain stupid... I'm from Denmark, so a lot of the comments are in danish... But that devs are many times foreign and really don't look or understand the comments... But a lot of them complain about pathetic things like no app 2 sd or that some function suddenly's gone instead of just writing the dev an email about the issue and giving the app the respect it deserves... 1/5 rating is a lot of the times not justified...

I'm sorry but this is a silly and immature move by the developer. Receiving negative feedback, dealing with trolls and idiotic users that don't understand technology are fundamental assumptions of the internet, just like not giving out your passwords or helping Nigerian princes get their money out of Africa.
I loved ShootMe and used it for our screenshots, but I don't have a lot of empathy for people that empower others to control how they feel.

I work in IT support and one of the things I have to support is phones. It blows my mind how many 10-12 year old kids have nicer phones than I do because their rich mommy and daddys think their precious little angels needs the latest and greatest smart phones. I went over to a client's office a couple of months ago and he had 3 brand new Droid 2s for his kids, ranging from 10-14.

In this day and age, there are so many rude little kids with nice phones all over these forums, its amazing to me anyone sticks around. Im over 40 and was raised in a different time than these self entitled children I see around here that want everything now, for free and want you to do it for them.
I cant blame the guy for leaving. A lot of times I wish I could go live on an island somewhere where I didnt have to deal with people because most of them suck.

I'm not a developer, but I was a ShootMe user on my EVO 4G. When it received the upgrade to Gingerbread, the app stopped working. The developer never replied to my email and from reading comments on Market didn't reply to anyone.
He did finally released a new version of ShootMe, but you had to have a computer to use it. Also everytime your reboot your phone, you had to sync everytime with your computer.

Once something becomes part of the main stream, you'll see the d-bags start rolling in. Even something like xda can be tarnished once it "gets too big". There is hardly a day that goes by where I don't read a thread here that doesn't make me shake my head. This used to be a highly technical forum, back when every devices was htc and running windows mobile.
The only thing that can really be done, is to work with a smaller, more appreciative community. I doubt you would get very many jerk off comments from a Windows Phone user, they are happy to get whatever they can.

As a android developer IMHO the android community is as bad as they come. Xda for example used to be a place of collaboration. Currently its a place where maybe .1% do dev, .9% appreciate the development and try to help, 99% ether complain or say nothing at all. Whether the development is for free or profite(which I won't evev get into here) how is a developer supposed to work off of that? Users would rather right a comment blasting a developer who has literally spent days of his life on some product without even attempting to resolve the issue themselves.
I'm not saying some complaints are not warranted, just saying flip the coin around and its not so hard to understand the developers standpoint.

There is no denying that there is frustration on both sides. This frustration seems to stem from expectation, communication and control.
The developer expects their customers to be civil.
The users expects the developers to devote anything between some to all of their resources/free time building/making their products better.
Both are unreasonable expectations if you think about it.
Civility can only be maintained in a mediated environment - the Android Market seems only concerned about brand and copyright issues. Google seems to think that it's ok to put its developer behind chicken-wire with lights in their eyes whilst their customers are free to hurl beer bottles at them. Dealing with anony-trolls is time consuming and offputting.
Developers range from teenagers with spare time on their hands up to multi-million dollar development studios. I, myself, am a father of three, I work a full week (we've got to eat!) and I code when time permits. Even though I respond to every request put to my apps, if you think that I'm going to compromise the balance of other areas of my life to put in a bug fix - think again. Sure, some of the more effluent businesses can throw more resources into a project, but just bare in mind that most of us are just people and not doormats. Respect and encouragement is all it takes to make the market a happy place. Flaming just ruins things for all (on both sides).
Communication between devs and end users is and most likely always will be a bit of a sticking point. The fact that everyone has their own opinions, likes, dislikes kind of makes it obvious that there will never be an app with 100% 5 stars. Even the most popular apps on the market have ratings across the board. Though, admittedly, some of the low grades may be down to trolling - but some of them will be genuine. Communication takes time. From a user, it may take a couple of minutes out of their day. For the dev, they may have hundreds a day to deal with. This takes them away from the development that the mail is probably asking for!
A user doesn't, and should never have control over the developer. They should, however, be able to request, beg, plead *nicely*. If they get frustrated then they should remember the phrase 'you get what you pay for'. The developer doesn't get any money when you bought your phone - so don't think they have any obligation to give you something for nothing. If it's a paid app, then the developer is saying 'yes, I'll support it.' That's fair sport.
The developer should have some control over their customers in the sense that a shopkeeper can choose who they let in their shops. Unfortunately they have none. They can't even moderate the comments on the market. I've had a 'GAY - Pointless, uninstall' (his words, not mine) on a free app downloaded 12,000 times and has a 4* rating. I can't do anything about it. It always appears when people go to the page. This individual has hurt my app and me without provocation. I didn't ask anything from them. Fortunately, the following message pointed out that the 'Pointless' user was an idiot (thanks XZombie), hopefully it will negate some of the damage. We're completely at the mercy of the masses, and being a relatively new dev, it's a scary place to be!
It's a shame that the most influential party in all of this is hiding behind a wall of silence.

I don't suggest developers could edit comments - that would make the process equally pointless, as devs can put all of the 'nice' things they want in the description anyway. Sorry if I implied otherwise.
Devs should be able to either remove, request for removal or even block the rogue elements. At present, we have to just live with the insults with no way to disprove their claims. Even a 'troll flag' would be an improvement - to show other users that the dev disagrees with the comment.
All accountability is on the devs whereas trolls can run freely.
Do any other devs out there agree with me on this? Others may have had a much more dealings with such than I have.

IMO if google was smart they would allow for a limited ammount(% of total) of "submissions" of there comments to a third party(google). If they are found outlandish they can be removed.
My 2 cents lol. I can say as a dev of a few apps on the market I have gotten rediculous comments n 1 stars b4. I mean if they are justified that's a different thing entirely. But my 1 stars are disproportionally higher then the trend of the others. Which proves one thing...

I agree with your comment. Though I am not a dev. I have experience working in the retail end of software. This is a I want it now society, folks forget that they got this software/app for free and as soon as they have a little issue they fly off the deep end cussing out the maker/distribitor of the product. Anyhow like you said you get what you pay for.LIke in my IT course in school my book said "check the dummy behind the keyboard" anyhow thanks for the great apps i use the time flies app.

Before we start flinging hooks around here, wouldn't it be more productive to actually find out what happened first.
I may be proven wrong here, but the guy must've been given some serious grief to take such a newsworthy action.
In fact, that's not been mentioned - it could be media storming. Drum up enough publicity and come back blazing. Only time will tell on that one.
At the end of the day, it's his property. And if he makes a lot of people unhappy that's his prerogative. The reason he's giving though are indeed a real issue the community needs to address.

I've noticed that the flavor of a community will vary a lot by device. The Captivate community seems to be generally good and helpful for the most part, but I've heard horror stories of ungratefulness and rudeness about communities around other devices. It may be the same sort of thing with different varieties of apps. If people feel like an app performs a function they deserve outright, they may be less inclined to courtesy and more inclined to selfish expectation.

Tired of the complaints.

It's a new phone. It will have issues. Get over it. I've never seen so many people complain about something. It is literally the best phone you can get right now. If it doesn't work for you get an iPhone. I love this phone even with the issues it has. They will be fixed. Sorry just my two cents.

It still amazes me that people complain about a new device having issues. This is HTC's new flagship device which has been created from the ground up. It's the first generation of said flagship line and is bound to have issues. Guess no one here had a 2g iPhone. Sure it was amazing, but I also had its short comings.
I returned my HOX cause they didn't have any available for exchange. Going to buy one tomorrow from Walmart. Can't wait to get it back.

I started a thread like this and it was closed in about 5 mins or less. It seems like complaining on here is the norm and not the exception. There are definitely some issues here and there...luckily for me, they don't affect me too much because of how I use the phone. Every phone I have had has had issues...best phone made period. Glad you're enjoying it.

I concur. It's ok to have threads like "Multitasking is a joke on this device", "Who else is returning their handsets?", "Disappointed w HTC QC" etc. but it's not ok to have a thread confronting the complainers. It's true that if you spend money on something and it has issues you're entitle to complain but srsly saying **** like "Im gonna return my HOX and buy an s3" is just plainly redundant. This phone is a complete new direction in manufacturing technology for HTC and the only thing I can chastise them for is the fact that they seem to rush it out, but I can totally understand that it has software/hardware issues. Instead of threatening to return and to buy from Samsung, why dont people just either do it and move on w their lives, or be patient and wait for a solution? Look at the screen flickering issue being incrementally solved as an example. Moreover, the S3 hasnt come out yet so stop it the comparing bs already. Werent the S and S2 plagued w issues upon launch as well?
Mini rant: Samsung hasnt changed their handset manufacturing or design since like forever (really I have a 2008 Samsung f480 or something and it looks reminiscent of the Galaxy line) so it's expected that their handset making process is more refined. It's not fair to compare an old-fashioned design w something as innovative looking as the HOX.

The great news is that the SGS3 will be in people's hands in less than two weeks. If the launch goes like the i9100, and GN, the comparisons to "perfect" that we've been seeing will suddenly look pretty feeble. As they say, "he who laughs last, laughs best."

There's little constructive conversation in the complaint threads. No one's trying to put their heads together to clarify and resolve a problem. They are ***** fests. The multitasking thread is a great example. 2/3 of the posts are just "OMFG, this is inexcusable" pile ons. And anyone that dares say it isn't bothering them is squashed like a roach.
I agree people need to stop *****ing. Nobody forced u to buy the device. If u don't like it return it. Otherwise stop *****ing.

I agree. People can complain for 65 pages about a new phone, but if someone creates a thread about being tired about all the *****ing, it gets closed immediately. The reply by the Mod was condescending and rude, yet he allows other threads to continue. No surprise though, it's the XDA way.

So, what are you proposing about that particular? We should all just shut up, go with the flow enjoy the broken phone? Seriously, one thing is complain about something minor, like theme colors, another is something that makes the phone virtually unusable. The more people complain about such things, the more the manufactures get aware of that, the more chances they gonna do something about. Maybe perhaps we should get another topic where people can vote if they like it or not the multitasking is working?

Actually, topics like this help to even out the discussion and see both sides of the story. A casual user would get the impression that the phone was garbage and no one likes it if all they read are complaints. It needs to be known that not everyone is complaining about the phone. The last thing anyone wants is a media blackout.

This is nothing like the first iphone. Android has been around a long time, Android 4.0 is like 7 months old. It's the same camera module from the year old SGS2.
What is so revolutionary? I like mine a lot, it's a slick phone, but it's not that groundbreaking.

Both Samsung and HTC have designed their products to meet the needs of millions of people. Along the way there were bound to be compromises. If any of those compromises don't meet your needs, don't buy the phone. XDA probably represents at most 5% of the phone buying public. For 25% of the 5% to think they can band together and try to make multi-billion dollar companies bend to their wishes is pretty naive. So by all means, have at it but don't ridicule the people that see the futility in some of the complaining.
Some of the features of the navigation system in my car drive me crazy and other members of its forum agree. It would be laughable for a small group of us to flame the manufacturer expecting them to revise the system because we don't like it. But yet, here on XDA, that's a pretty much daily occurrence. I don't like the way the automatic soap dispenser works on my dishwasher. Maybe I should gather up a group of fellow disgruntled owners and spam the manufacturer's Facebook page demanding they change it. If you want to send a message to a manufacturer stop buying their products. That'll get their attention a lot quicker than #neveragain campaigns. The GPS on the SGS (i9000) was in fact with no debate FUBAR. Owners launched the largest social campaign I've ever seen trying to get Samsung to fix it. Samsung never responded. They and Apple now share 90% of mobile device profits. Oh well, so much for that.
I don't know what you guys do for a living but decisions at large companies aren't emotional; they're statistically and financially driven. In cases like Asus and HTC unlocking their bootloaders it wasn't the rallying of the 25% of the 5% that made them rethink their policies. They were probably on the fence to begin with and the positive PR and low financial impact is what got them to change position. A device can easily meet the manufacturers financial objectives even if the entire XDA universe boycotted it. We're described as "enthusiasts" and make up a small but vocal part of the phone buying universe.
HTC's now on record saying multitasking is working as designed. Everyone here is still in their remorse period. You have two choices: 1) return the phone, 2) keep it and hope that since this is now on HTC's radar maybe there may be some future improvement. Option 3, which a lot of people seem to be taking, keeping the phone and *****ing among themselves isn't going to change how multitasking works.
Things like petitions and posting on social sites are fine. They are ways of communicating with the manufacturers and letting them know how some of their customers feel about their decisions. But as with everything, there's a time to call it a day and move on. This isn't a civil rights fight; we're talking about features on a phone. And of our "issues" probably 10% would even be noticed by the phone buying public in general.

The problem here is none of such compromises are publicly available for users to weight their decision with, none of the reviews have mention such crucial flaws, they have some cons about colors in photos or phone being too wide, but nothing that would greatly affect user's experience with phone's usage. Customers will have to experience it themselves, which means they will have to buy it first. (for example LG Nitro HD has defective hardware compass and the only way to know about it to experience it yourself, because nobody is talking about)
In this particular case with multitasking, the only people who's not getting affected by it are the same people who shouldn't buy such phone in the first place, since they just wasting money on something they don't use to it's full potentials.
Also, the same logic as "don't like it, don't buy it" can be applied to the OP complaining about the complainers - don't like it, don't read it, move along. But, it's just does not work in our imperfect world...

On this, you and I totally agree. Part of what makes XDA fun (for me) is the difference of opinion. It's interesting to see what's important to people and how everyone uses their device differently. The battles always start when smart, knowledgeble, strong-willed people all try to get each other to agree. And I've never seen that happen here or anywhere else.
Imagine I'm making a thread like "Who else is not returning their HOX and dont give a **** about the Samsung Plasticky s3". Pretty sure it will be closed so quick my chair still doesnt get warm yet.

Actually, topics like this help to even out the discussion and see both sides of the story. A casual user would get the impression that the phone was garbage and no one likes it if all they read are complaints. It needs to be known that not everyone is complaining about the phone. The last thing anyone wants is a media blackout.

No i think what is being said is that these threads dont help other users, they just are meant as a knee-jerk reaction to complaints threads. If you want to do what you are suggesting in your post, then you should start a thread along the lines of "I love this phone and here's why", not "tired of the complaints." That's just a complaint about complaining, plain and simple.
I also started a thread speaking of my problems with the one X and I got a bunch of people whining about my whining which I don't understand. And the point of the thread was not intended to go that route. Anyways I guess alot has changed here in XDA.
