low memory device - Milestone XT720 General

Hi all. I remember when I got this milestone xt720 it was working OK with android 2.1 eclair.
But with newer versions it seems this phone just doesn't have enough memory.
I now have another phone which is faster.
I think this a great phone. Even with the poor processor I think it could still be used if there was more memory.
Thoughts?

I dont think there's much we can do about it
I've been using CronosX (gingerbread) and its very nice. I always get about 30mb free. Which is ok, I guess.
I would love to have JB running though

Froyo vs Gingerbread - performance

Can anyone who has used both ROMs explain what the benefit would be for using the 2.3 roms? What exactly is better about it? I was thinking about trying it but dont want to bother if its not worth it.
Thanks.

What do you mean about what do you mean?
I am personally wondering on the inspire specifically if gingerbread is a great improvement?
Ehh, I ran the CM7 and it was cool, everything seemed nice and smooth...and the screen off animation never gets old but I like Sense and I find the custom sense roms to provide similar if not better speed and performance... then again there is no official GB for Desire HD/Inspire 4g, so... when that comes out we'll probably see a general overall improvement of performance etc
I'm not exactly sure if you would *need* it. We'll only *need* it when the Sony games/ports come into play that require GB. (Cuz we share very similar hardware with the Arc and Xperia Play)
Er...I mean I'll need it anyway. Can't wait to play some PS games on my Inspire
I just flashed Android Revolution.
I couldn't get back to CM7 fast enough. Lol
The only Froyo ROM that compares speed wise is MIUI. Other than that my phone ran noticeably slower. Just my experience.

The inspire plays ffvii at almost full speed depending on what is going on. That is on the stock Rom no root.

I ran CM7 for a few days but then went back to a Sense ROM. I did like a lot of the features on CM7 but I like the HTC apps and widgets even more. Plus, my battery life was even worse on CM7.
I don't really see much of a difference in speed at all. Both run very smoothly.

Yeah... but I've seen some demos of psx4droid, and I wasn't too impressed. I think the framerate drops would bug me... now if sony made an official emulator for the Arc/Xperia (which I believe they are) it should be pretty sweet at least that's how I recall the good ol psp days. Their PSOne emu was pretty good!
And back on topic, to OP, some people really like gingerbread's features etc. You should just flash CM7 and give it a spin for yourself. Just have a diff rom ready to flash if you don't like it. Bam. Gotta love Android
I noticed flash runs a lot better in GB and the browser on the CM7 is able to stay in desktop mode... Its the little things

Never had the desktop issue. Then again I have not had ANY issues with this phone outside the sound quality on speaker phone.

desire s ram and cpu usage.

So i just rooted the phone and installed the virtuous unity rom. When i installed the rom i assumed it would take care of the ram and cpu problems which is why i didn't really care much. But since it didn't solve the problem, i'm starting to wonder where the hell all the cpu and ram power is going. On idle i only have about 150mb of ram available and my cpu is 50% in use. Is this normal? Can anything be done about it?
It's also very noticeable.
Strange.
Are you controlling the running services and application-tasks manually ?
I usually have around 400MB free ram and cpu usage is just on the normal range, and an ordinary task manager does the job.

is your phone running slowly? 150Mb is loads or RAM, have you ever run out?
custom roms tend to make more use of RAM for caches and to improve performance etc....especially if you try sense 3.0 based rom which by nature will be larger.
How did you manage to get 400mb!?!?!?!?! What rom are you running?
It does lag quite a bit at times which seems to go away after the use of a task killer but i don't use task killers anymore as i failed to see the point in them.
also why does the phone claim to have 768mb when i can only see about 611mb. Is there some memory reserved for the os or something?

You can't get 400Mb that must be a typo! unless you've created a Senseless ROM.
Even when I kill ever process that runs using the the fast reboot market app I still get less than 350Mb!
I have over 400MB free, stock ROM, Settings take nearly 18MB, so my guess is about 418MB free. Based on stock app manager. I have lots of apps, 3G Watchdog running and five full home screens. I had very same situation on previous DS. How much do you have?

i can't believe my eyes here.....
I just tested it again and there was 440MB (458MB w/o Settings) and about 150MB used. But I'm OT, sorry.

With LBC MOD i get
Total memory: 612MB
Used: 424MB
Free: 188MB
Running Virtuous Unity too, atm have 100mb free RAM. Can't say I think th phone is running slow though....

Sure not! Tried both roms and they work really FAST!
so the ram available is okay, but the 50% CPU is a problem i guess(i dont have a program to check that)
If you fell that your phone is slow even after wipe and flashing a new rom it might be a hardware issue.

Check image in attachment.
That's the memory when i kill all unnecessary crap running.
With the needed apps running it varies let's say 350-380MB.
Using stock rom ( europe )
:O WOW, maybe is time for me to back to stock!, joking but wow...well, looking in that screen ( on settings) i get
185 MB used and 405 MB free

[Q] Speed comparison - Stock vs CM7

It's just as fast. But CM7 has like hundreds of more features.

What are you talking about? Cm7 is a lot faster! From my experiences and from benchmarks. I can never go back to stock based roms.

I never notice any huge differences between stock and CM7/MIUI. But CM7/MIUI have a lot more features.
I run weapon g2x and when my buddy (same phone of course) was on cm7 my phone seemed faster and got better benchmarks (both phones oc'd). On miui he gets better benchmarks but my phone still seems smoother and faster in normal use.
Personally I dont see why everyones all about cm7, all those different options they talk about can be put on any phone with the use of a couple apps, I haven't been impressed with cm7 on any of the phones I've seen it on (g2x sensation and triumph).

I don't know about a lot faster? On stock every app opened up in like a fraction of a second. Maybe CM7 is faster by tenths of a second but not noticeable by the human eye. And I never use bench marks as they don't really matter, so don't know about that.

the difference is seen by me when using sms, browsing, gaming and I think its because the use of my sd card and not the internal sd. I dont know what class the internal is but my 32gb class 10 rocks. Maybe I need to change the memory use from ext to int

Hmmm, maybe. Although I'm almost certain that internal memory is always faster than any SD card out there. Could be wrong though.

[Q] Which 2.3 ROM is better

I wanted to flash 2.3 ROM. I found various ROMs aavailable.. Which one is best to go for?
I Love CyanogenMod 7
I don't think XT720 have the ability to endure an MIUI's heaviness
I love MIUI
Is there a Miui with 2.3 that is not to bugy

Ho no 7.1.0.7 and cronos x latest are in my opinion the most stable gingers. Fjfalcon cm7 is under developmemt and is my favourite but still has a couple of bugs that need to be resolved. The first 2 that I mentioned seem to operate well with low ram but also have a few issues of their own. Just make sure u do the tweaks on fj cm7 and flash off a stock and all is good.
Sent from my XT720 using xda premium
If you follow cm6,cm7 ram manage thread you will not have ram issues.
I recomend flfalcon cm7 and ho no cm7,and cm6.
Don't use 3d launcher they are ram hogs.
J.Y.Daddy doesn't support his builds anymore so would stick with support builds.

cm7 test branch releases (Peshovec) is very, very good
What are the pros/cons of fjfalcon compared to HO!NO!?
I am currently running fjfalcon but it seems to crash a lot on camera still...but it could be my sd card being corrupt. I am curious if I should replace it with another 8GB or go larger with a brand name. Thoughts on that too?
Pros for fjfalcon are that it's under development and getting better and better almost weekly. I like the new rotation and led notification. Ho no has problems that will never get resolved. Minimal but will always be there. I'm running cm6 by Mioze for now, got frustrated with freezes on cm7 roms but will return when cameras are fixed.
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using xda premium
I think cm6 and cm7 are about the a little more ram for freeze on cm7 it has never happened.
The biggest problem is launchers they are big ram hogs.
Cm6 and cm7 are both are under development .

I agree. Launcher makes a big difference. ADW launcher seems to launch well but scrolling speed is a bit slow.

More RAM consumed in ICS

Ever since I upgraded to ICS, RAM consumption is high in my atrix2. It used to have free RAM around 300 to 350 MB but now in ICS the fee RAM is always around 150 to 200 MB.
I am having same apps which I used to have on GB. Nothing changed on my phone. Can anybody advice me whats wrong with my phone?
Ex. Games like Temple Run are little bit sluggish in ICS whereas it was running smoothly in GB even though I had some apps in the background. Now in ICS it is sluggish even though there no other apps running in the background.

Android has its own task manager, which is quite sufficient. What people don't seem to understand about RAM, is that it is meant to be used, not the other way around. Android, like Mac OS and Ubuntu, wants to use all the RAM it can, because that's how it was designed to work. There are settings (in Android we call them "minfree" settings) to tell the system how much RAM to leave free and available, but the rest is designed to fill up as fast as possible and stay that way.
Android can manage memory rather well (and the settings are still there to tweak if you just have to touch stuff) and having up to 300 percent more RAM makes a huge difference. There will be a few times where killing off a handful of tasks will speed things up, but overall you'll get the best performance out of your phone or tablet if you stop worrying about it and let Android be Android. If you need to live on the edge (and I know a lot of you guys do) root and hack your phone with some amazing custom ROM that has everything tweaked and allows you to travel forward in time -- I'm right there with ya, 'cause it's fun as hell.
But don't worry about how many apps are running on your phone, or about using widgets that tell you these things, because it just doesn't matter anymore.

Long press home button, it will appear. Swipe to close apps.
Try with debugging mode enabled along with force GPU rendering from settings...
Task managers/killers are completely useless in android. The only use of task killers is when a rogue app keeps running in background consuming lots of CPU cycles.
After the ics update my phone too was a bit slow but then I factory reset it & then wiped the cache partition. I don't know what did the trick but it works great now.

Go to development, background applications, at most 4.
This way lag will stop.
