Am I missing anything by rooting/flashing a rom? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I keep seeing all these topics about OTA updates, and Verizon updates, and I feel like I am missing something by not going completely back to stock to update.
Am I?
Because as far as being rooted, I change the ROM I use, the Kernel, some root apps...I don't know.
Basically, is there ANY reason for me to go back to stock to update besides seeing how Official JB looks?
Thanks in advance.

Official JB (on Verizon) probably won't be out until like.. February of 2013. This update only matters if you have NO SIM problems when texting/calling.

When it comes to Verizon OTA's and being rooted, just wait a few days after its released for devs to re-base their roms on the latest update. If you want to certifiably maintain your root access/unlocked bootloader then it's better to wait and see when devs update their roms/kernels. Also, this is not a Jelly Bean OTA. We are months from a Verizon update to Jelly Bean. I'll be happy to be wrong about my 4.1.1 update estimate.
Here's what the new update entails:

Cool, thanks for the info/link.
None of those updates matter to me, so I'm good.
Sticking to custom roms/kernels then.

Not a problem at all. I'm just interested to see if it can be rooted using the existing exploits. Less headaches for all the new folks who accept the update.

[Q] How to update to GB

Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!
Yes...
you should be about to get it either way. If you get the official update you will probably lose root... If you wait a few there will be a rooted version posted by one of the many xda members...

One more dumb question: Why is everybody so excited about the official GB update, when we have right now a few GB leaked versions with some custom ROMs (Bionix from TeamWhiskey, etc... ) available, for which as I hear, many say are excellent? Is this official one gonna be better in any significant way than these custom already out? Thanks! )

It will come with an official GB kernel and hopefully updated battery drivers and A2DP functionality...Amongst other LG fixes (again, hopefully).

OK, I get it... So, all these unofficial GBs are sort of limited because they lack these LG stuff they're (hopefully) putting into the official one. That's why it's smart to wait a bit more.
Hopefully it will fix most or all the problems.

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.
Thanks!
i have question also since it's related to thread title. i'm running stock right now but rooted. once i update to gingerbread cm7, will i have to install all apps and settings all over? and will call log and stuff like that disappear also?

You should be able to get all of that stuff after startup my hitting the square boxes in the initial setup. Worked for me yesterday with the Eagleblood 2.3.4 ROM, when someone recommended it to me rather than Titaniumbackup which screwed up my phone a lot because I went from Froyo to GB

When I did an OTA update, it kept all of my apps and settings. I can't remember if it preserved call log.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.

[Q] rooted

ok, so I've rooted phone to fix the Bluetooth keyboard. Is there any harm or benefit to leaving it rooted ?

No...in fact there are many benefits. You can take care of your Xoom by using the tools and utilities that require root;
Biggest benefit is you can install the Team Tiamat Manta Ray Rom and/or the new Tachi Kernel. Smooth as butter and numerous small bug fixes.
If I leave it on 3.2 do I still get the OTA updates if I'm rooted. Just trying to understand what goes on with rooting, cant find good explantion, pros and cons.

No OTA updates when rooted. I don't expect additional HC updates anyway, but ICS may be out before the end of the year. No worries though...our developers will come up with an (almost) immediate way to update for rooted devices. Or you could always just flash the stock images. No need to relock though...OTA updates will go to unlocked/unrooted Xooms. Personally, I would never think of going back...the Xoom experience is so much improved by using the customizations available, but YMMV.

Most recent stock OTA?

I've been rooted for a long time using thunderstick full blown on 0.01.78.0906w_2 with imoseyon-6.1.0GBS+
Was just wondering when the most recent OTA occurred and how much better the performance might be over this rooted ROM. I'm getting a galaxy s iii in a few weeks but was just wondering what was going on with this phone, officially from HTC.
Thanks

In my opinion you're on the most stable radios, some of the mr4 radios do pretty good if you want I'll post a link for both as they are not a package. As i am going to the big boy S3 i wouldn't worry about it too much, bout one more week

I've not paid attention to OTA since rooting mine a long time ago as well, and am also wondering what the latest OTA is? (GB, ICS? Version? etc.)
The most recent stock OTA is Gingerbread version 2.11.605.19 710RD. More information on specific changes are at link below:

only the AOSP roms are based on 4.1.2.. Sense is only 4.1.1, and since you are on the latest firmware, you will only be able to run the sense 4.1.1 roms

Is it time to repeat the general rule that YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE OTA UPDATES IF YOU CARE ABOUT ROOTING AND UNLOCKING?!
Honestly, people.

Well i OTA JB updated before i rooted my phone and knew of all this greatness. I didn't know it would **** over everything! DAMN THIS SUCKS.
Anyways how would i have upgraded to JB without OTA for future references(updates) ?

So you're saying you took the OTA before you knew about what rooting was? If so, than that's somewhat understandable. iElvis's statement was to the many many people here who have taken OTAs when they are already rooted, or not rooted yet, but intend to root. In that case, taking the OTA should be understood to be a no-no, at least not without the proper research before taking the OTA.
With very little exception, there is no benefit to accepting OTAs. The content of the OTAs will show up in Development (usually quite soon) in a safely flashable format. And the OTA can do a lot of harm, as you have now seen.

The stock ROM will usually show up in Development in a recovery-flashable format, pre-rooted, and devoid of any nasty hboot or other meddling. Often, these get posted within days (or even hours) of the OTA deploying. Sometimes even before the OTA (in the case of leaked RUUs).

You get a pass, but as redpoint said, many others should have known better.
When kernel source is released (soon), this problem should go away.

Oh so to update to 4.1.2 i would have to flash a Kernel, which hopefutlly comes in as quick as possible ! Thank you IElvis and redpoint
Someone should be able to fix this soon, the same thing happened on firmware 2.20 no? Just be patient. Even though being able to flash new roms all the time has kind of become too much of an addiction.

Why no 4.3 TW ROMs?

Just curious why there was or are no 4.3 touchwiz ROMs and also why stock 4.3 wasnt available to flash earlier? I am a very active flasher and was very surprised to see the 4.3 update to be nothing like anything I have flashed before. THanks
Verizon just released the OTA a few days ago and the only dev who still works on TW ROMs(at least that I know of), bricked his S3.
In the past, we have received leaks of OTAs and other unreleased builds from certain XDA members, but it seems they have moved on to other devices. Also most of the TW devs have moved on as well.
AOSP is booming, however.
Yup, a combo of devs moving on to newer devices and the security in this new update is pretty intense. I'm sure it'll happen but resist the urge to install the OTA and forever lockdown your phone.
Ahh gotcha. All the more reason to move to a Nexus 5 as soon as I can. Thanks a lot for the info guys!
