External SD card location path for apps - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Got the Photon Q earlier today finally. Not going to unlock/root until I'm back at my home office next week and see how it works in my building with the spotty Sprint signal issues there first.
Anyway, just in case anyone else runs into the situation where they're trying to fing/figure out the correct path name to point to the sd card (Mybackup Pro comes to mind) rather than the internal storage which, confusingly, is set to /mnt/sdcard....the path to the actual sdcard you plug in for the P-Q is /mnt/external1.
I'm sure for many who've been on several Android phones now that may well have been known by default, but my only previous Android phone was the Epic and didn't have this issue there. Googling myself was giving me several different options. Finally manually re-downloaded Astro on the Q and was able to find the right path name.

Yea, there's "two" SD cards on this device - internal and external. Kinda odd for sure... I ran into this crap when porting TWRP to it .

Hehe, could have just asked. I've referred to it a few times . I kid, glad to see you took to the device, let me know how the office signal works, get it from the Sam's club? Was the info I provided correct according to the employees?

For the most part....technically with in-store vs. the through the Sams Club website (which is what you pulled from) I have 30 days in terms of the hardware....but in terms of being able to revert back to my previous contract apparently its still 14 days there, so in the end its all the same.
One thing I can see that, if I do keep the Q, I'm really going to have a hard time adjusting to is the keyboard. While in and of itself its a very good one physically, the positioning of the bottom row of letters and symbols in particular is very different from what I'm subconsciously used to on the Epic lol.

Yea ordered the q thru my employee discount! So can't wait to actually get one instead of playing with our store demo! But overall 3g speeds are nice and fast on the q. Better than the gs3 and evo lte! Maybe due to motorola radios but it loaded car forums pics i go on using stock browser with ease!

It took me a little to adjust, I kept smacking the caps lock and tab keys. All is well now though

How do I get the apps to either download directly to the sd card or how do I move them to the sd card.

I personally use an app called directory bind, that moves the data on internal SD to the external, very easy to use.

MyTouch 3G 1.2 Root (3.5mm)

I have spent the past 2 days trying to root my phone following the steps in the "theunlockr" guide for the MyTouch 3G 1.2.
I have had zero luck moving past the 2nd step. I keep getting the "Wrong model ID" error, and after refollowing the steps to create the goldcard numerous (10 at least, on 3 different computers, 2 running Windows 7, 1 XP, and also with 3 sepperate memory cards), I have gotten nowhere. If anybody has anything to add that I might be missing, I would be very thankful.
The unlocke guide bricked my device his sappimg is apparently outdated , I would recommend using the one on here. Also the goldcard that worked for me was a 2gb PNY. I got it at best buy.
Are you making sure to copy the number right? And have you watched his video? The video helps alot.
i watched the video, and made sure numerous times that the number was correct. i did read somewhere that the sappimg he was using was incorrect, but while trying to find the correct one, every link i found lead right back to the same one that he had posted.
also, where would i find the MyTouch 3G 1.2 sappimg file that you are talking about?
Here is the sappimg. You need, and remember if something does brick I'm not responsible, I'm just provided links hahaha.
Wait nevermind it says since I'm a new user I can't post links yet. Have somewhere I can send it to? Email?
Also don't download the recovery he has on his site (unlockr). Amon ra has posted a NEW version which is 1.7
yet the guide on this site says to use version '1.5.2G sapphire' just google search it. And remember make sure to download the one for 32a and that it says 'G' or else your screwed. And you can get the stock rom from this site too. Il see if I can find the link
Also Sorry for late replies. Typing on an iPod
Just sent it to you by email.
The one used to create your account on here.

found that just a little before you sent it, and it also did not work. I'm going to look at work tomorrow and see if I can find a 2Gb Kingston card, since that seems to be the one that everyone has the best luck with (all 3 of the ones i tried are sandisk)

I think there lies the problem. I tried 2 different Sandisk cards and they didn't work, I switched to a 2GB Transcend card and it worked. Good look with rooting.
best buy used to carry kingstons, they dont anymore.
and when i tried a sandisk...same thing,,...didnt work.
what worked for me was a 2gig PNY from best buy.
BUT i did see a 2gig kingston at the tmobile store.
Walmart.com has 2GB Kingston for 7.88 (or 8.88, can't remember, plus I get 10% off for working there), but we do not carry them in my store. bought a PNY 2GB and going to try that first, hopefully it works.
well, the PNY 2GB card did not work, so now I get to attempt to find a Kingston 2GB card...
Sorry about the news. its weird certain cards work for some and not for others.
and yeah i remember checking walmart for a kingston. you have them online?
also when the guide says to copy 00000000-00000170.
you do copy the whole 00000170 line? and not just a small part of it?
just asking because i made that ^mistake^ when i first tried
AND-- when i thought my gold card wasnt working because it said "no sappimg.zip-not found, cannot load"
i decided to let it site after it finished THEN something else popped up saying "would you like to update?"
i guees it found it after it failed to.
and a Kingston card is a no go... I couldn't possibly follow the steps any closer. my device is recognized in cmd... i copy the code down, use the reverser, then use that code to get my goldcard sent to my e-mail. only possible thing that i can think of is that when I get the goldcard e-mail, it says "Here is your G1 goldcard". now, I do not have a G1, however, there are other people who have used the same website/method (learned by reading the comments) with their mytouch 1.2, and they didn't have any issues rooting their phones. Honestly, does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong? as far as I can tell everything is working, but i keep getting the stupid "Model ID Incorrect!" error.

i was copying the whole 00000170 line, including the little section on the far right with the ".........."
im out of clue. except im guessing it also replaced the first two numbers zeros? or it didnt and you replaced them yourself?
Wait okay try this. might work! i hope it does. this helped me. last ditch effort.
okay Recreate the goldcard and put it into the phone when finished, plug phone into USB, make sure USB debugging is ON. next at the top where your notifications show up . pull it down the notification screen., now click on the thing saying your connected through USB, Should prompt you to "mount" your sd card. click "mount".
your device will now be recognized as a removabkle disk. find which removable disk it is, (for me it was disk G) now click on the removable disk (which is really your sd card) and copy/paste the sappimg. onto the Remov. disk. DO NOT place in any folders.
the first 2 digits were automatically replaced for me when it reversed.
ok, so im not really sure why exactly, but i guess waiting a few days allowed the sappimg to work, even when using the damn 512MB Sandisk card I had sitting around. i ran it through the process of running the sappimg update, and have stopped right there for now. not really sure where to go from there.
I'm looking to be able to run 2.1 on my phone, and the ROM I'm thinking to go with is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394. Now, me being a complete noob and not knowing all the lingo and whatnot, I am assuming that the ROM is basically, in the end, the version of Android, and the features that it has that I choose to run (correct me if im wrong). Now, since I am looking to be able to run Android 2.1, CyanogenMod 5.0.7-Stable Eclair 2.1 is the route I want to go (and constant updates are nice). According to the description, it is made for the 3.22 series radio. on my fastboot screen, my radio version is 3.22.20.17. Is it still necessary to flash the radio since it already says its a 3.22 series? My guess is yes, and that I have to make sure it is a 3.22 radio, otherwise the rom will not work, but I want to be 100% sure. not trying to brick my phone, don't think I can handle firing up the old 2008 Sidekick again.
P.S.
at this point, do I still need to use the 512MB Sandisk (Gold Card), or do I still need to use it until the radio/SPL are flashed and the new recovery is in place? How about when I install the ROM? does the ROM load off of the memory card when you start your phone (therefore needing to be on the memory card I choose to use as my normal, everyday use memory card), or does it save it into the system until you follow the steps to change the ROM you are running (if you choose to)
SUCCESS!!
I guess what I was doing wrong was it was not a Friday? not really sure to be honest. I gave up on following the process that I was using for the gold card and instead found a post in one of the comments for a ROM about a program that does basically everything for you, without having to open multiple webpages and stuff (GoldCardTool.cab). pretty straight forward (just read the readme in the .zip file).
I then was able to flash my radio, hboot, and recovery. loaded up the Amon_RA recovery tool, loaded in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673503 ([ROM][MT3G 1.2/LE Fender] CR_Slide2G1_v1 [come get your daily driver]. After approx 10-15 mins of loading, I am now back at my home screen.
Now the fun begins... reinstalling/setting up some of the key apps i was using!

Reformatting the SD card

Ok, so i did search before i posted this and i even looked through all 5 of the similar threads that popped up when i wrote the title for this one but none of them answers my question so i'm posting...
Background:
I'm pretty new to Android, got a Dell Streak back in Oct '10, and loved it. Rooted, put DJ_Steve's StreakDroid on yada yada... Broke my streaks screen and got an Inspire from my Best Buy warranty.
Now, to root this Inspire it seems its a LOT more involved... Making a gold card etc.
My question:
When you reformat the SD card, what happens to all the folders that are on it? Do they get recreated or are they gone for good? Are they even that important? I noticed some Adobe, Yahoo folders, which i assume can be re-created easily once the apps are reinstalled/opened back up but others on there like dcim, Android, Data, etc etc that look to be more important. Do i need to do anything special or just hit reformat? I'm looking at making my included SD card the gold card and taking my Streaks old 16GB card and using it for day-to-day use. So i guess i'm just looking for any "gotchas".
Thanks in advance to anyone who offers their help.

If any important data is in those folders, you should save them on your computer. For example, pictures in DCIM folder, music, videos.... or documents that you created..
While creating the gold card, the sd card will be formatted and you will lose all data.
After the phone is rooted, you can then format the card using the phone's "Format SD card" tool, and then use the card as normal.
All those folders will be recreated once those apps are installed.
Edit: Also, if you look in the Dev's section, there are tools that will help you with the whole process of rooting your phone.
Thanks Kirk! Yeah i've been reading up on the SuperOne Click and the Hacker Kit. Just trying to read and reread the stuff so i know what to expect. I'd like to watch the tutorial video for Super One Click but i'm at work and Youtube is blocked so i'll watch it at home tonight.
Just looking to see what one is easier and would give me the best chance of not royally screwing up my phone. I kinda get the gold card thing and what it does but seems so silly at the same time that i have to use an SD card and then put it away to use it for later if i decide i wanna go back to stock...
I guess the ease of hacking the Streak kinda spoiled me. Especially for my first Android phone

Use a proxy site to be able to watch the video at your work place. Something like this --> http://www.proxeasy.com/webclient.aspx EDIT: Scratch that... This proxy site doesn't allow flash content unless you subscribe. Sorry. You can try other proxy sites
The inspire is my second android phone. I had the captivate and it was very easy to root. Prior to the captivate, I had the eyephone. So glad I went with an android phone. Sick and tired of the same UI with iphones.
Although the entire rooting process for the inspire seems overwhelming, it's actually pretty straight forward when you follow the instructions.
I haven't heard anyone "bricking" their inspire yet and if you get stuck in the rooting process, search the forums and you will most likely find your solution.
What route did you decide to use? The Hacker Kit or SuperOneClick?
Yeah i had a Captivate for about a month, it was just a loaner from AT&T until the Streak Come out. Previous to that i had the iPhone 3g as well. Hated playing in Steve's sandbox... and i abhor iTunes. I can't think of a bigger POS software.
I guess the Streak had its moments trying to root. I used the QDL tool which needed to be run through Fastboot with a couple commands. It was getting the damn Dell ABD driver running correctly on the PC which took the longest time.
Anyway, thanks for the info Kirk. I'll see if i can't get this thing cooked up tonight. I really wanna try CoreDroid, and get the battery life on this phone to a respectable level. If its just sitting in standby its ok, but as soon as you use it the percentages just tick away quite quickly.

I used the hack kit. Went ok. Had some slight issue when i tried to use a 1GB SD card that apparently is too small for a gold card. So, then I decided to just use the SD card that came with the phone and all went well!
I also have to agree with hating itunes... They keep cramming useless features and just makes the whole user experience a little less interesting.
Im glad that with android devices, you don't need any specific program to sync your stuff to the phone... Just plug in and done!

[MOD] Swap Internal SD and External SD

Hey everyone,
Found this mod for the Galaxy S (Or SGSII, not sure what the i9003 is), which switches the Internal and External SD cards, according to the Android OS. Personally, I have a lot more space of my external SD and would like games and such to store their data there, instead of on my smaller internal SD. Some apps like Titanium backup can change their data locations, but Games such as Gameloft games and the like cant have their game data moved to the External SD card atm.
This looks like a great alternative to this issue, could this hack be adapted to the G2x?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088474
Although I could see how you would think this would be in development, this post should actually go in Q&A.
That being said, this would be a very useful modification.
Edit: My apologies. Apparently you posted in precisely the right forum. My apprehension arose from the fact that so many people say 'BUT WHAT ABOUT THIS MODDD??!?!' and it just clutters things up so my immediate reaction was to motion to have it moved. Good deal bringing it to Krylon and Tweezit's attention
I couldnt decide between Q&A and Development for this topic, as it involves porting or adapting a hack for another phone to the G2x.
MODS: Please move this to Q&A, if necessary.
EDIT: Apparently not, this seems to be a development topic now
Here is a file Be warned I have not tested this. If it messes your phone up I am not held responsible. **Personally I would let another dev look at this to be on the safe side as I am not 100% sure on this.**
You will have to extract it and use root explorer to push to /system/etc/
Oh I needed to clarify this was on 2.2.2 so it may differ on 2.3.
Since we have a little interest, we'll leave it for a day or so and see if anything comes of it.
I've PM'd krylon to take a look at Tweezit's vold. (sounds like a nasty STD).

Later guys ^^
I'm looking at this now. Your biggest issue is you are going to have to have 3 different versions... well... in reality 2 different versions. CM based and Non-CM Based.
And if someone flashes the wrong one...they are hosed and will have to restore from a backup
ok, after reviewing Tweezits vold, Bionix vold, and CM7 vold, tweezit's would break mounting.
The reason being, with the introduction of Tegra, the vold changed for it.
I'll have to do some testing, but making the internal to external switch should be fairly easy.

We need to decide on a standard. Unfortunately some people don't have SD cards but I'm sure most people would that visit here.
I'm for the switch cause i hate crap installing to my internal drive. Cm already made the switch.

I'm with you. Maybe we should put together a poll or something...
Multiple versions just confuse the new guys. Would be nice if there was some priority... Like use SD as first choice then fall back on internal if SD is not present.
That still complicates things as people wont know what's going on.
****best idea****
If CWM flips it by default then you can just streamline everything and make a public service announcement on the CWM download page that they will be flipped and an SD is required for flashing. Makes sense to use a SD for flashing anyway.
Even a 2gb is plenty for some Roms and app storage. Save the internal for personal music and other media. I hope no one rocks less then that these days.
Plus if you use internal storage I can see certain scenarios popping up where they are boot looping and lost their access into the internal files. I can't mount using 3.1.0.1 external. If it werent for my SD I'd be stuck hardcore.

Good point however 5gb of internal space is not enough for me since I have 10gbs of music onmy sd card. I wish there was a way to have a switch function that will enable you to choose which sd crd to download to

I've attached the CWM flashable .zip of the mod I've been running for awhile that will swap your SDcards. Never been able to get it to mount the external card as a folder inside /sdcard/. Didn't really want to release it until I did, but here ya go anyway
BTW, is it just me, or do init.d scripts not work in CM7?
This is for CyanogenMod only!
I don't have the volds from other builds on hand to mod them....
WOW! I come back from long day of work and find all this discussion.....awesome!! Thanks for chiming in guys. I def understand there will have to be at least 2 versions cause of CM, but as its a file, couldnt a simple app\script be created to swap it back and forth, after detecting CM or not? It may be a lil beyond my scripting knowledge, for the detection portion at least.
I see a ton of useful reasons for this switch, as the 5GB isnt the 13ishGB that the Galaxy S has and doesn't quite satisfy the requirements of a "primary" sdcard IMO. The 5GB would be useful as an "_InternalSD" folder bind\mount (whatever is being used), with the External SD as the main SD card. I'll list a few useful reasons why.....
Off the top of my head......
If your a serious gamer and you have a TON of games that have downloadable files put to the SD card, that 5GB will go quick (Gameloft I'm looking at you)
External SD can hold WAY more nandroid backups than Internal SD, and ROM Manager would recognize them (I acknowledge the external sd issue is not really an issue w/ the two ext4 recoveries)

I humbly disagree.... If anything it would belong in the General or Development. It is a work towards development and there is no "question" being asked. Just because it isn't a ROM, doesn't make it any less important to work on the phone.
Just my .02

[Q] on my 3rd Infuse, is it me?

Setting the scene (without being too dramatic) Been on XDA since i jumped on the Captivate when it was first released, I respect all the work & knowledge that is shared here and rely on it more than the overpaid excuses-for-tech support @ att.
When i Grabbed the Infuse, i handed my cappy down to my kid, still no issues with it and even upgraded to GB.
I got my Infuse as a referb (as i did with my cappy) back in Sept of 11.
Im rooted, no ROMs loaded.
I cant pinpoint when things began (that im about to explain) but I thought after 2 replacement units (one through warranty [another referb], the other at the Device Support Center [a non-referb] it just might be me???
Here is what's happening:
1.when downloading apps, some freeze and never complete (reboot resolves, and restarts when phone boots up) I know this was once an issue with market app... but several "uninstall updates" of the market app later did not change this.
2. (most importantly) when rebooting phone, Apps located on SD Card do not (always) load, its a crap-shoot, it takes anywhere from 3 to 9 reboots for the apps to be recognized and accessible. Then, and only then, does #1 happen.
what is strange to me is that even when the apps do not load, all my music & video on my SD card are visible and playable from the basic audio/video apps (that are installed on internal sd) when the apps are not loaded, the External-SD can not be unmounted, even though i can browse to it, its as it it was never mounted
I played with several microSD cards and went to Samsung to find the optimal speed/class for the Infuse (class 4) and have tried several different manufactures of microSD (currently using a SanDisk 32GB class 4) none have resolved this issue..
what do you think?
any feedback would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU in advance.
Refurb is the keyword here...
I sent in my M11x laptop a couple months ago and it received a refurb motherboard and it hasn't been the same since...However, I've had refurb devices before with no issues, it's a hit and miss thing.
You could try starting from scratch:
Gtg's Unbrick or THIS one (which gives you root back and recovery if you ever need it)
Just make sure you read up on how to do it.

Agreed, but the one im holding now is not a referb, i watched them crack open a new box in front of me at the Device Support Center. which is why I'm suspect that it's something I have done (or am doing) wrong,
I have taken this one Back to stock several times with GTG's Ultimate Unbrick, so when i go back to Device Support Center, they cant give me that "well your rooted" crap. but nothing changes.
i dont know, honestly, it's the only thing keeping me from trying any ROMs, but I wonder if some of them might just fix it.
I have a refurb and it has not given me any problems. It runs better than when i bought a brand new captivate. As far as the apps on the sd card goes I had problems on start ups when i had more than ten apps moved to my sd card. With the last two leaks that problem has gone away. For some reason these phones don't like apps on sd cards.

Oh well that changes things lol I wouldn't let the issue stop you from installing Roms. Try out ZEUS, it is based off of one the newer leaks. (L2) Who knows, it might fix your problem, if not, you obviously know how to return to stock.
Thanks!

Star N9589 MTK 6589 Quadcore 1GB/8GB

There is already an active thread on B94M/B943 but none on N9589. I am hoping to start one.
I received mine a few weeks ago and still playing with it. It is still unrooted because I am waiting for my micro-sd to arrive. I installed ADB_usb_driver_120827_v3 and MtkDroidTools_v246 and seems to work fine. Mine is the 1GB/8GB version, came with Android 4.2.1 and bought it on ebay for US$230. Would have bought it from aliexpress (cheaper) but their payment system put me off.
I am not sure but I think this phone is manufactured by HUACHEN Technology Limited.
Mod Edit...link removed
Finally!!!!

I assume you have the same phone? Have you tried a 64GB micro sd card? I read about someone on needrom who successfully used one. I am still waiting for my 64GB card to be delivered.

Hello Dreamerman, I too just got the Star N9589 and am very happy with it. I was wondering what service provider you are going through? I been having a heck of time trying to get service for this phone. I found a person who left a comment on a N9589 they bought on Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/Star-MTK6589-Quad-core-Capacitance-SmartPhone-Grey/dp/B00BVUXQ2W . They got theirs working on a pre-pay service Net 10, I have tried both straight talk and net 10 and no luck so far. Thanks

I had to factory reset mine 3 times to get 3G working. Previously only getting 2G. Have you tried factory reset?
Issues discovered so far....
1. Sometimes the person I am speaking to reported hearing echos. This applies to both land line and mobile.
2. Speaker volume too low. I suppose this can be corrected via engineer menu.
I confirm this phone supports a 64GB micro-sd card (FAT32) although specs says upto 32GB.

OK good to know, what does factory reset do for the phone exactly? I was worried about only getting 2G speeds using GSM. I read up on a youtube channel that a guy is using AT&T with his N9859, so maybe this is what I will have to do. Was hoping to use a pre-pay service but not sure that is possible with this phone. Thanks for the heads up on the echoing issue..

Yes I did hear about audio on this phone being quiet, but you can correct it with in the settings/ audio panel.

Thats great, I noticed too when buying my phone that some of the specs were under-rated from what they really were. Interesting, guess its still a big plus the phone is better than what they show on the specs thus far!
Revman, factory reset means a fresh reinstall of your stock rom to original state from factory. You will loose all apps you install yourself and all customisations like wall paper etc. In my case, I also lost some Chinese apps that came with the phone which I didn't want so that is a bonus.
Antutu score when I got the phone is about 12000 but after factory reset it went up to 13140 so that is a bonus too.
Engineer menu is *#*#3646633#*#* but if you install free app Mobileuncle Tools from Play Store, you can get into the engineer menu from there. It has AppToSD built in.
Also if you are buying a 64GB card from ebay, be careful. I bought 4 over past 4 weeks and all has been fakes. Better buy from shops although cost more.

That is not all. I also noticed that while conversing using speaker, besides the low volume, I hear crackling as if the reception is very poor. I miss out hearing a few words and coupled with low volume, it is almost unusable. When switch off the speaker to normal phone-to-ear mode, the reception is back to normal and the audio is clear. I contacted the ebay seller and will see what he says.
It is a great film, I love mine. Just wish I could get some good custom ROMs on it like Paranoid Android.

Thanks clarifying on the factory reset. I'm sorry to hear about your eBay experience, I am always weary of ordering from there, I have had a lot of friends get ripped off. This goes to say I was also really worried about ordering this phone from china, but luckily everything went really well. I got this phone from Alibaba.com out of Hon Kong. Ordered 3 N9859 phones, there were no china apps in mine that I noticed, had all Google's apps as well as some other really cool ones like Microsoft Word. they came with phone folding covers, two batteries, head phones with built in radio antennas, wall charger, usb cable. I am extremely pleased with the quality of these phone, they are awesome!
Dreamerman, thanks for the Engineer menu number, that will come in handy. I will maybe try Mobileuncle Tools as well. I seen a video on how to root the N9859 phone, go to Youtube & type N9859, you will see "how to root my N9859", just read the steps and software to use under the video. That also sucks about your experience with the speaker phone, I will let you know how mine works once I am set up with a service provider and can actually get to talk on it.
I also went down to AT&T today to see if they could run this phone on their service, he thinks it's not going to be problem. He said a girl came in not to long ago and she had something similar, they were able to get hers going. So I am seeking out all my options, hopefully I will have the phone up and going shortly. I will write in and tell who I got the phone working through once its activated.
Root success with this tutorial.

Used driver ADB_usb_driver_120827 to connect to my device under debugging mode.
I also installed adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130522 for good measure.

OK, I will check this out, I have an at&t gsm sim in my phone from Net 10 at the moment, but phone is not reading the card. For what ever reason I can't get into mobile settings to change APN settings. So this is why I am thinking I might need to root the phone, so I can open everything up for full access. The Engineer code did work great for the phone and I was able to go into some deeper settings, but didn't fix my problem. I have 3 of these phone we are trying to get up and going, so will probably root them all, seems to be a better way to go anyways so we can have better apps, etc..
Also, when you first get your phone and plug it into your computer, it says it needs driver "MT65XX Preloader Driver". Found websites that had this driver "4 Share.com". Do you have a reference on where to get this driver so my computer will recognize the phone and I can transfer files etc.. thanks.
You can get the driver from here.

Phone Working on NET 10 & Found Working Driver
Phone is working 100%! I was able to get the phone working on a pre-pay plan through "Net 10"., You can go down to your local Radio shack and purchase a "Net 10 Bring Your Own Plan" for $9.99. Inside the package comes a T-Mobile Sim, At&T Sim and an AT&T Micro Sim. I am using the standard size AT&T GSM Sim out of the package, I discovered you must insert the sim backwards verses how you put them in on our Samsung phones etc. So now you only pay $45.00 a month if you are enrolled on the auto-inrollment through thier website, otherwise it's $50.00 month. You get unlimited talk, text and I believe up to 2GB of data before they throttle you. (Throttling is when they cut down your data speeds) 2GB should be more than enough for your typical user though.
To get your N9589 working with your computer I found the working driver with complete instructions here: (they wont let me post outside links yet, so this is what you do) Go to your Google Search, and type in: "How to install MT/MTK 65xx USB driver on Windows 7" . One of the top websites that pulls up is: DroidChina.com . click into this page and you will see instructions and the driver download towards the bottom of the page.
With out instructions any driver will be useless to you, so important you know the proper steps how to install. This is a Chinese Forum, but I assure you its 100% legitimate and working. You will have to sign up with the Forum, but worth it. I spent 3 days just trying to find the right driver for this phone, every place I found it wanted you to download their software and all their crap in order to just download the driver. With this forum, you don't have to do that, nor worry about malware or viruses.NOTE: the only thing I did different on the install is, where is says steps 4, 5, 6, the picture sample below, I just click on the folder called: "usb_driver" and it installed perfectly. I tried there way but my browser box didn't show the same folders theirs did.
Hope this helps you guys, I had a hell of a time getting information out there about this phone. I am very happy with the Star N9589, it's truely an amazing phone with an awesome 5.7" screen! Everything works great including the speaker phone, which I know Dreameran here on this forum, was having a problem with on his.
My next mission is to find out how to do a nandroid backup.
Update: I used different apps from Play Store to attempt full nandroid backup but all failed. The best tool for me is the one I already have ie MTK Droid Root & Tools. See tutorial in link below. My packed backup zip file is 1,039,621 kb and unpacked is 3,100,708,864 kb.
Happy

My SanDisk 64GB Class 10 Mobile ULTRA Micro SD Micro SDXC Memory Card should arrive tomorrow. I bought it locally as I am sick of ebay fakes. I hope to have 2 partitions, one 32GB ext4 and the balance FAT32. Will be using either Gparted or free version of Partition Wizard (bootable ISO). After that I will install Link2SD.
UPDATE: I've done it. Partitioned my new shiny original 64GB C10 Sandisk micro sd card into 2 partitions; 15GB ext2 and balance FAT32 4kb cluster using MiniTool Partition Wizard bootable CD. Installed link2sd. Linked all non system apps to ext2 partition. All sweet. Spent several hours researching pros cons of ext2/3/4 and finally selected ext2.
After flash ROM my N9589 is hard bricked.

Sorry to hear that. Risk of breaking ROM is the reason I maintained my stock ROM. Have you tried reset factory? There are sites (mostly Russian or Chinese) out there with stock ROM. If yours is already bricked, there is no downside. Try them all. Good luck. BTW, have you tried needrom?
