Need phone advice - General Questions and Answers

Just made a huge mistake.
Sold my white GSM Gnex on XDA and picked up an international Note. Couple of problems with the Note...it lags terribly and the WiFi continuously downloads on my home network for no apparent reason, even after a factory reset. Other phones on the same network do not behave the same way.
In any case, I'm preparing to return the Note. What do I do next though? I've pretty much decided that I need Jelly Bean. I don't want a GS3 or Note II. I'd buy another Nexus, but I've heard there's a new one on the horizon, so I don't want to spend $350-400 on another phone with a 5MP camera.
Currently using an iPhone 3GS in the meantime. Help!

Stickies are not obvious on a mobile device. I read some of that thread last night, and it looks like a complete mess. Not sure how that makes sense.

It makes sense because there are such a high number of these threads that we decided to consolidate them in an effort to clean up the forum, thereby getting other questions answered faster and making the search function more effective. Closed.

What's with everyone switching to the sgs3?

Is it the cool/popular thing to do or do they actually think it's a better phone?

I'm still here
I can sum it up for you in one sentence.
The Samsung Galaxy S 3 is not locked down, and the HTC One X is.
I know two people who switched and didn't have one that was locked down. One is a developer and one did some theming.

what about if its cool ,popular and a better phone?.... millions own it already not a hard thing to find out why its such a success.
many of the people at my work place own one.. and none of them even know whats xda.. so is being unlocked still the key to that success?
If you don't have one then you don't know what your missing. S3 is just good in every department!! Say no more cuzzy!!

I have an S3 on my account, I got it for a buddy of mine. I've spent a good deal of time playing with it and can't see the appeal at all. It just isn't anywhere near as nice as the HOX. 2GB of RAM, that's it. Everything else about it sucks compared to the HOX. My 1GB is working just fine for me.

Bingo u hit the nail on the head. People complain about the lack of removable battery. Ummmmmmm maybe 10% of pple would actually carry a spare. IPhone doesn't remove battery and I'm sure we're all aware of how well that does. And as far as storage goes, yea it wouldn't hurt to atleast have 32gb. But I havent filled 16. So consider me happy.

H8rift. XsMagical. Scott. And others are more then enough reasons for me to never leave this phone. And Rohan has done amazing things with AOKP and he is still in highschool if I'm not mistaken. These guys make our phone what it is and we have to work around ATT and HTC security features. The Devs we have are a reason not to leave.

Then you should ask them. And couple people isn't everyone.
The main reason is: most users if they don't buy the iPhone they'll go for sammy because of the brand. You don't know much about a smartphone but you at least know they make good tv's, computers, refrigerators, you name it. Where else do you see the HTC logo? Many people didn't hear about it. So, obviously pick the Samsung instead.

What is the big deal about which smartphone you use? I would bet that most people on XDA are pretty well clued up about phone tech and so, money permitting, they will make an informed purchase, buying the phone that suits them best.
I own the SGS3 and yeah, I think it is top notch handset, but that doesn't mean I diss other handsets. I like to think I'm more evolved than that (though some of my pals would dispute that :laugh. If someone comes to me for smartphone buying advice, I will try my best to give an informed opinion based on my experience and their tech knowledge and needs...and quite often I'd send them down the iPhone route, not because I think it is a better phone (though Apple, whether you like it or not, make fantastic hardware, just a shame about the company ethos), but because it is probably the best phone for them.
Most on this particular thread will probably own an HTC...again good top noth handsets, but I personally avoid them due to a very bad customer service experience a couple of years ago (threads can be found elsewhere), but that doesn't stop me recommending them to others (though I do also relate my experiences). And many others on XDA will own a whole variety of other smartphones.
The point is, does it matter which phone you own? Yes, some people will spend a fortune on a top end handset just for bragging rights, but there's nothing worse than a 'phone snob'. Most of us on XDA buy what is best for us and are generally happy and if we're not, we switch.
You pays your (hard earned) cash and makes your (well informed) choice. Enjoy what you have, worry not what other think about it and be proud that you are part of XDA and have the knowledge to tinker with and give advice about your techie toys. Just don't get caught up in a 'mine's better than yours' debate.
Happy tinkering folks!

Q Thinking about getting this phone is it worth it?

Before I put my foot forth and my wallet would like to know how you guys enjoy this phone. I was reading around about this SOD is it really that bothersome and common??
Also I had previous experiences with Samsung phone do you have to backup EFS folder with this one too?
Also how brickable is this phone, Samsung phones usually are easier to brick than HTC or LG.
Thank you for the input this community looks promising.

Pretty hard to brick, great phone for the price. Cwm makes easy nandroid and allows you to select how you want it saved. Sods are almost non-existent anymore. On ICS I don't think there is any sods. But I've been running test kernels for a week now for jellybean based ROMs and I think there's light at the end of the tunnel. All in all get it if you can't afford an s3. I personally like it better than the s3 because of the size.

Thanks, yeah I don't like phones higher than a 4.3 screen size. After that it feels like a mini tablet lol. So this is perfect with power, I don't think the s3 is all that necessary in Android yet. Plus I live in NY you always have to be looking if you know what I mean haha.
Any info on the EFS question if this phone has it? So I'll know to back it up

I just checked at best buy and they currently have the s3 at 150 with 2 year agreement my question is have you guys ever tried buying through best buy? Does your plan change in any way after you guys have done this? Tmobile always tries to make it impossible for their customers that's why I ask these things. I see it as a good investment worse comes to worse down the line I can just opt out and pay 200 penalty and I would still have my s3.

The s 3 is nice and all... but honestly the next phone I'm going to get in a couple years would be Ubuntu phone. Or a phone that can run it. (When released.)

Galaxy Nexus

Just out of curiosity, has anyone considered going back to the Galaxy Nexus? I have been debating it thoroughly these past few days. I understand that hardware wise the S3 is definitely a better performer but software wise? I'm kind of torn. Just asking for opinions is all. I like discussion and seeing what others think. I am not rooted or flashed yet if anyone asks I tried last week and ran into the activation bug that most were getting so I am back to stock with newest VZW update.

I don't own a nexus but the battery life alone would make me stay.
I am hoping they drop in price, I want to pick one up to play with.

Came from a gnex and there is no way I could go back to it, and I really loved that phone. Battery life is abysmal and I enjoy not worrying about my battery all hours of the day. Definitely more development over there, but there are enough ROMs and such to keep me happy with the s3.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I've been thinking of buying one only because I still have well over $100 worth of accessories for the nexus. Around here I could find one for a little over $100.

I am thoroughly annoyed that the Nexus 4 didn't come to Verizon yet. That would obviously be my phone of choice.

While I loved my Nexus, and we still have two in the family, I wouldn't go back. The developer support is awesome, but there is plenty for the S3 as well. The S3 out performs the Nexus in just about every other category, and blows it away, when it comes to battery life.
I had a Nexus for less than a week. After 3 sim cards and a total replacement, I returned it for the S3 and haven't looked back. Signal strength on the S3 still isn't all that great, but getting better. It is still hands down better than what I ever had with the nexus.

After losing the MEID on my first S3 after flashing CM 10.1 (I found out too late how to repair and backup MEID), I thought about going back to the Nexus. The Nexus does not seem to have issues with MEID when flashing JB 4.2.1 or any other rom for that matter. The Nexus also doesn't have the silly trip counter either when flashing a custom rom. However, it has awful battery life and the radio doesn't seem as good. When I would use iHeartRadio via wifi, the stream would always cut out. This never happens with the S3.
There's an app that will reset the trip counter if you should ever have the need.

Galaxy s3 is far superior.
Battery life is the WORST on galaxy nexus.
The only thing gnexus has going for it. Is it is first in line for Ubuntu software and there is a toolkit for most, if not all versions of the gnex.
Feel free to correct me.
But I believe those features will come with time as the gnex is a year older? If not more.

USA s4 buyers?

with all due respect as i browse the s4 forums i see this phone will be super popular with our friends overseas. i guess the question i have is what US developers and US xda members will be buying this phone? im just concerned on how decent development will be for the US based variants?
Us development is going to be good. The us SGs3 Roms were interchangeable with just small things fixed like modems, etc.
It'll most likely be the same with the sgs4 but even better as tons of countries in Europe will have the Us version as well.

well considering i just bought a spiegen case and lcd protector weeks ahead of the preorder you can tell im getting one. i guess worse comes to worse and development lacks i could always sell it and get the htc one.
Okay, now how is development going to be better than on the HTC one lol. More people will have a sgs4. Its like 5 to 1 in sales I think. Pre orders are 4 times more than the sgs3 in certain parts of the UK from reports.

there is a lot of development going on in the htc one forums. the only reason i didn't get one was because of the non removable battery.

There's a lot of development because it came out.
What I'm saying that the SGS4 will have a equal amount of development but most likely greater since for every HTC One there will be 3 or 4 SGS4s.
I live in the U.S. and my upgrade comes available on the same day AT&T starts taking pre orders. Coincidence? I think not...

Same here. I decided to add my parents onto my line and use their upgrades. Now I get a upgrade every single year. They don't like smartphones and prefer simple flip phones.

[Q] Sense 5 Issues (T-Mobile)

Hello,
I recently flashed a CleanRom (Sense 5) on my HTC One XL (Evita) a week ago, and during this week my phone's mobile data shuts off randomly, and sometimes my phones reboots automatically. Anyway I can fix it?
Flash Beastmode 3.5 kernel
You can also update to 2.15 firmware if you're S off.
This problem is frequently brought up throughout the forum and users have found success with the solutions mentioned.
Sent from my One Xl using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Search before posting please, you can't go more than a few pages in any of the Sense 5 ROM threads without finding the solution to these problems you're facing. I still can't believe how often this question is asked, considering the sheer number of posts already available that outline the solution.
Sent from my Evita
This is just getting ridiculous.
Is it because of the 2013 theme? Why can no one find the search button?
Sent from my One Xl using xda premium
Yeah, there's even a search button in the app.
Sent from my Evita
God. Nobody looks for anything anymore before posting. Did anyone read the rules when accepting the terms and conditions???
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Just to be clear, I did search. Multiple times. I guess I didn't search enough, but I apologize anyways.
Well, I flashed the Beastmode 3.5 Kernel, and it was working perfectly. Now, it says that I have no SIM card
Let the beatings commence xP
Tape the SIM card to tray. Trim excess material and give it a go. Read this awhile back on XDA and have experienced ZERO since.
Again, a common topic on the forums....
Sent from my One Xl using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
xD I'm so sorry! Thanks for all the help, though!
I'm convinced that folks keep asking this same question again and again as a joke.
