Did I accidentally end up with a developer device? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I just purchased a Galaxy S3 cash from a local guy. Firstly once i removed the stock screen protector I found that the phone had the following inscription just beside the samsung logo to the left side D2-34** other characters there....
It activated with verizon as a "4G test device"
Anyone have any ideas here?

Can you please post the "About Device" information for us?

Doesn't appear to be anything special and samsungs only suggestion was to send it in. With its markings they would not guarantee its return.
Verizon won't update its status and I seriously doubt it would be covered by assurion.

No it was activated at a vzw location stock during its first power on. They are telling me its how the ESN is listed as a 4g test device.

I think that it was flashed prior to your purchase based on the name of the build number... try flashing a stock rom to see if it changes or ask for a refund from the guy you bought it from

Edit....
Restoring my stock image now perhaps that will shed some light on the subject....

Stock
These are the details from the stock rom as it was received. To this point the only thing I had done was gain root access.

I spoke to the guy that sold me the phone. He has filed a request with verizon wireless to get the MEID updated in the system to show the proper device. He is a verizon rep so hopefully they will get this pushed through.

I have a friend who works for HTC and I've gotten quite a few dev phones from him. I was in the same boat once and Verizon corrected the meid number with no issue. It does take 2-3 business days though.
The problem is that the phone goes right to HTC, in my case, and not too Verizon. The phone is never tagged in their system so that's why they have too add it.

who did you speak with to get the phone tagged and added into their system? CS has no idea how to add meid's or esn to the database

Can you help? Didn't speak with with anyone that seemed to be able though the rep I spoke to locally seemed to be able to.

Sounds like this was a phone they had in a Verizon store that had the smart phone dummies instead of real phones. I think sometimes those stores get a complementary model for people to use when they want to see the real thing... maybe this could be it?

It comes with an unlocked bootloader? Have you checked AP Fastboot?
And you are sure you didn't have to go through a process asking if you wanted to void your warranty? It seems strange to ship with a voided phone

Nothing worked on the phone besides the launcher. The slide up notifications per icon was badass. But it had no network service or WiFi. Not even a play store. Had a bunch of apps but they were dummy icons. He said it was for development purposes and show. It was extremely smooth though. I asked about the boot loader and he said yes to being unlocked. He was quick to answer and said that it is the first Motorola device to ever ship with an unlockable boot loader. He said it would be kinda similar to the gnexs. There will be an easy to access option out of the box to unlock the boot loader.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
He also gave me a statistics speech about why they have ignored bootloader unlock claims in the past but I don't remember. I was playing with the phone lol. But I'll ask again when he comes around next month. Had something to do with percentage and how we the people asking for the unlocked boot loader are only a 1%

If you can get information on the bootloader unlock process that'd be awesome. The Atrix HD has an option but doesn't say a code. If the Photon Q shows the code for you when you run 'fastboot oem unlock' then I think it would mean hard work to get the Atrix HD unlocked.
Price??

Thanks for sharing this - still surprised that the phone is marketed with business users, as subjectively put... in mind - being that the battery is fixed, what options have you heard for individuals needing more power for voice calls on the go?
I loved the previous one which I still use - mainly for it's swappable batteries for continuous voice calls - not everyone has the chance to be by a power source to charge (e.g. wall / car). There are external power packs as I mentioned in another post; (either by solar or pre-charged that plug into the microusb).

oh damn! i didnt even think of looking. he was in the store for about half an hour talking to us about it. i spent most my time testing out the keyboard and messing around with the new UI. which btw on the 19th, 20th at the latest i hope to see this new launcher ported to other devices! trust me, everyone will love it! they took features from jellybean and pimped them up for ics on the q
our store should get them by this friday. if so then ill get the model number for you then. and whatever else you need. and sense the bootloader is unlocked it should be fairly easy for me to extract an image from it to post here before the 19th
actually.. we would probably get the demo phone before the actual phones.. which should be in the next few days. demo phones are no different than the real thing. they come to us with a demo video app preinstalled. we have factory reset our demo phones before and used them as a store phone. could someone point me in the right direction of getting an image from this phone? **safely**. dont want to **** the phone up and get fired lol
ive never tried with dump_image but i would imagine that might work. ideally we could root it and grab the images that we need then unroot it easily enough. once it launches and the tool comes out i could put out the CWM and have people unlock to root

Remote Diagnostic = TROUBLE

This tool will now be on our phones if you update. It sounds like they may be able to see if a person Is rooted. And other security issues might arise What are your thought

I only installed the radio. I highly doubt they'll be able to just connect whenever they want. You'll have to accept the request cause that would be some form of invasion of privacy but I still dont like the fact that they tried to force it on the phone. A big FU to Verizon for that one

They can not just search your phone. When you call in if they need to use it, they ask your permission and before it is initiated you have to enter a code to grant access.

As soon as I saw this on my fiance's stock phone, I said "No way, no chance I'm going to update my rooted phone." Like others have said, if you're rooted, you shouldn't be taking the update. If you updated your rooted phone and ran into issues, these post have warn you already.
To my understanding, it was on our phones when we first got them. I've called into Verizon to troubleshoot a signal issue and the computer and technician both asked me to let the use it. I have always declined. My brothers Droid Razr Maxx also has this.

My thought is to use cwm to banish the update to cache limbo, where I can pick it apart at my liesure and choose what (if anything) I want from it before filing the update as a whole with my S3 data.
I miss the days when people wanted an ota to hit so we could pick it apart for new software, anymore it seems most people are afraid of it...
Remote Diagnostic is a really really old news. I have this on my Charge and I rooted the hell out of it with many many custom roms and kernels. I flash like 1000 times and when I need to exchange, I just flash back to stock and they gave me a new one. In short, it's nothing people, it just being used to fix your phone remotely, of course, before you give them permission to look around, you have to roll it back to stock first.
This was on my old Razr Maxx. As stated, you have to allow it for Verizon to use it.
And with it, Verizon was able to see how Flash video was broken on my phone after the ICS update.

Engadget says bootloader is locked?

http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/
Simply put: if you enjoyed the firmware on the GS3, your experience with its successor will be just as rapturous, if not more so. If you're hoping to run custom ROMs in place of TouchWiz, you may have to wait for a little while since Samsung has confirmed to us that the bootloader is locked.

That is what they say on the GS4 review. I have talked to another reviewer and he can confirm that there is a "Write Protection: Enabled" entry on his Sprint review unit.
Sprint has never locked bootloaders, and it is company policy that they do not deny warranty for root/custom ROM reasons. Can anyone confirm that this entry is disabled/bootloader is not locked on international/unlocked models?
Edit: NEW INFO! Write Protection is universal to all i9505. It does not determine bootloader lock status. So far it appears that it only is write protection on bootloader (probably to prevent bricking). Only confirmed models with bootloader lock are the Verizon and AT&T GS4.
This isn't good. I can't believe that Sammy is gonna start pulling this crap. Looks like custom roms and kernels will be a while. I'm curious about international version as well.

Samsung is really trying hard to get us to hate them. Seriously, I don't mind that you can't employ some decent designer to get your **** sorted out as far as touchwiz is concerned, now you lock the bootloader too? Seriously Samsung?
Could someone with international S4 confirm if theirs have write protection enabled too?
I'm going to cancel mine Monday morning if this proves out. Locked bootloader = no sale. Does seem odd that both sprint and AT&T owners are now saying that they have root and have accessed the bootloader...

AT&T and Verizon are definitely, 100% guaranteed to be locked. I remember from the VZW GS3 days that root was very easy, the problem was custom kernels for sure, and possibly custom ROMs. My memory is a bit fuzzy because I never had to read too deeply about the issue, none of my friends ever got a VZW GS3.
There are already several AT&T folks who are saying they have successfully rooted their phone. If this is correct it seems almost a slam dunk that the international unlocked versions will not be a problem. Guess its something we just have to see going forward as they get into peoples hands.

This is due to the visual voicemail app not being compatible with KK.
Your visual voice-mail isn't activating properly. That should only happen once during a reboot.

I don't think that means a whole lot. You link a thread from another forum for another phone. I don't know what ROM OP is running, but I would say that would be more significant than saying it's incompatible with KitKat. Because saying that is just untrue. Maybe it's just not compatible with AOSP based ROMs. And that wouldn't surprise me since its built for the stock ROM.

I'm only linking the op, since this gives the exact example that the op sees. Do you have a suggestion for the op, and perhaps a reason for his phone's behavior?

I'm not sure why you think that if an issue does not apply directly to you, that the issue does not apply to others..
Unless you have information stating otherwise, I find your opinion to be non-informational. But, of course, everyone has their opinions. Definitely let me know if you have any real information on this, though. I can't install that apk since there is no root option for TMO G2 yet. Obviously this works fine on my Nexus 5.

Oh, you're back?

If you open the visual voicemail app, both on initial launch and I believe the play store, they specifically state it's related to KK. The VV service isn't properly activating.

T mobile released an update today for visual voicemail that should fix this issue.

Any trick to get the free space with an unlocked bootloader?

Darn! I just tried this too. I'm on an unlimited plan, so I activated the phone on a different line, then switched it over to my line. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
is this a root problem, or bootloader? You could try to run "root cloak" app on Xposed Framework. I know that worked for people wanting to get ISIS wallet to work. It fools the app into thinking that you are not rooted.
It didn't check for root or anything

They typically don't need to ask for root. If you are rooted try root cloak. Have you edited your build prop or super cid?

I just read this article: http://www.pocketables.com/2014/04/thinking-rooting-htc-one-m8-hold-second.html
Apparently if your bootloader is unlocked Drive will not activate the bonus storage. In the comments someone relocked their bootloader and was able to activate the promotion. I am not that interested to relock for the promotion, but maybe right before it expires.

Just call HTC. Explain you didn't recieve the promo and they will ask u for your imei ams then email u a link to activate it. This is what I did and worked flawless. I now have 75GB.

Raising this topic from the dead in case anyone else is in the same boat as me...
I didn't even know about this feature but recently read about it when they upgraded existing users to 100GB. I unlocked my device the day I got it so never opened the stock drive application.
I called the 888 number and they just asked for my IMEI and email address and they sent me an email. I already pay for 100GB, so they added another 100GB on top of that.
Thanks!
Odd, I didn't have any issues getting the promotion and I unlocked/rooted (with Firewater) day 1 as well.

Glad it still works months later. Are y'all rooting, and then trying to get your storage space? Or what's the hiccup?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
No hiccup. Just to bump/confirm, I contacted HTC using their email contact form (see here http://www.htc.com/us/contact/email/), and just now got email with a link to activate my shiny new 100GB Google Drive storage good for two years. Clicked and confirmed, all good. Pleasantly surprised after I procrastinated on the initial offer of just 50GB, lol.
