Have you tried settings? or are you using an app that does this. Could you specify some further details? It may be that your application is default set to do this. And if its not an app, then get an app that stops this from happening. could find one for you, but need more detail to attempt anything

You should download should download an app from the market this cool app from google market.
It is called, the name of the app is ES Task Manager. I think its called ES Task Manager
You should also use. There is another app you can look into Auto Killer, this app is called auto killer
You can download CPU spy to check if the phone is going into deep sleep mode after you kill all the apps and one by one work out the culprit.

Haha! What has happened to my post??
I cut and paste from another forum I didn't get an answer from, read it back ok and it seems to have gone a little weird!
Sorry about that!
I've checked all settings in the phone, I cannot seem to turn it off. The only setting I can see that relates to it is the stay awake function in display.
Ill check out those apps thank you.

Oh the phones done it ever since I have had it, without even putting apps on it, so has to be something on the os which is standard.

Clear the caches and battery stats.
Your phone shouldn't be displaying the (lit up) charge screen for more then 5-10 seconds max providing your not pushing any buttons....

Orientation App that's NOT a battery drain

I had to stop using Locale because it was using 92% of my battery....tried to use Auto Settings (love the idea of it) but that was using 85% of it....is there any out there that will not drain my battery?
BTW when I say Orientation I mean face down will be vibrate and face up normal or something like that.
Thanks guys
Use a toggle widget? They take half a second to switch from vibrate to normal.

That's not a bad idea. I suppose any app that will have to use the Acc. will cause a serious battery drain. That's unfortunate because Auto Settings is very useful.
I think that settings profile advertised that it has a widget that goes along with it?

If you are going by battery statistics from system settings menu under "about phone", then those percents are not necessarily accurate. You need to look at the actual usage of those apps from something like System Monitor. The problem with the built in battery stats is that while it reports a high percent, the app actually only pings usage very minimally for a short burst. It uses little to none overhead, yet the battery screen reports it as constantly running.
I had this issue with Screebl, but System Monitor show that it uses very little of anything.

Extreme battery drain: any way to determine what's causing it?

The last couple of days my battery has been draining ridiculously fast. It just went from 50% to 8%, just sitting in my pocket without otherwise being used, in the last 3 hours. Here's what the battery usage displays:
while unplugged for 3h 3m 24s:
Android OS 81%
Cell standby 10%
Phone idle 4%
Display 3%
Android System 2%
Obviously something is going on with Android OS and I suspect something I've installed is doing this. I have Watchdog installed but it hasn't given me any warnings. Is there some way to determine exactly what is causing the battery drain, other than removing apps one by one?
Thanks!
I've suspected that my display keeps coming on when my phone is in my pocket.
Both the power button, and the trackpad turn on the backlight for 15 seconds when pushed, and it's very easy to do both when the phone is in your pocket.
I stopped using the HTC weather app, there is no way to stop it from constantly searching your location and it kills the battery FAST if you are on the move. Since I stopped using it I have seen 10+ hours of battery life a day and I use it hard, internet, gps, music, twitter.
It's the suspend process.
I can't link it to you cause I'm on the phone but if you look around, you'll be able to find it.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I don't think it's the display because the battery usage isn't showing the display as the main battery usage (unless I'm really using it for a long time). It's definitely something belonging to "Android OS". I wish there was a way to determine specifically what process within "android OS" is to blame. I really don't know much about Android or Linux in general so "android OS" is mostly a mystery to me.
I did uninstall several programs yesterday night and was almost convinced it was behaving better but it looks like after the first hour that Android OS is creeping up and overtaking the battery usage and the battery is draining pretty fast despite not using the phone other than to occasionally check the battery usage. At the current rate I'd be lucky if the phone isn't dead before the end of my workday. It probably doesn't help that I have a rather weak signal at work but if it was increased power to the cellular radio that was the culprit, would it show up under "Android OS" or "Cell standby"? I'd suspect the latter, but maybe Android isn't so logical in how it groups processes....
I'll try removing the HTC weather widgets as suggested and look up the sleep process.
Thanks!
It is the "suspend process" like that other poster said. Here is the defect, you can read through if you like. It's a known problem and not only isolated to mt4g
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
How did people determine it's the "suspend" process? I can't seem to find any way to determine what processes are specifically involved. Is there an app that will tell you that? I am running Watchdog Lite set to alert me at 50% cpu and have never got an alert which makes me question whether my issue is the same one described in that thread. Various people were describing 100% cpu activity by the suspend process and it doesn't seem to be the case with me.
I did have 2 weather widgets on my home screen. I deleted both and since then the problem appears to have gone away. I'll have to wait a while to see if it's truly fixed or just a coincidence. Someone in the suspend thread did mention that plugging into a charger temporarily fixed the issue and I did charge the phone for a while after deleting the widgets so I'm not convinced just yet.
One thing I did notice in the battery usage is that google maps seems to have a significant presence, despite the fact that I haven't used maps at all since last unplugging the phone. What is maps doing in the background? I wonder if it's trying to determine my location and cache map data...
Thanks!
Install Watchdog and in its settings, include, monitor, and display all phone processes.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #15
Enable system process and set thrashold to 30% and you will see the suspend process. Or when you notice the drain is happening go to the phone hidden menu. You know the #*#*3626*#*# in the dialer and then from there go to battery usage then select CPU usage, you will see the suspend process on the top or near the top.
Just use some memory management apps. I currently use ES task manager and in advanced settings, i set it to kill all processes when i power down screen. I never use any battery when phone is unplugged(i literally left my phone unplugged overnight midnight to about 7am and it stood at 73% entire time). And having it rooted, i use SetCPU and set the phone at around 768mhz powersave when i'm not messing with the phone heavily. I easily can squeeze about a day and a half out of the battery.

sorry, that was not the correct sequence at all. I was trying to do it by memory. It is *#*#4636#*#* then select battery history, in the first dropdown box select cpu usage. That menu is pretty useful for other things to like network usage breakdown per app, gps usage, etc.

Since removing the HTC weather widget my battery drain issue has completely disappeared. The battery now lasts a reasonable amount of time.

Actually I have removed the HTC weather widget couple of days ago and also disabled the water sync in account settings too. That seems to have help with the suspend process on my phone also.

What's the "water" sync? Is that a swype typo for "weather" sync? (Swype errors are annoying in that their usually not so obvious.)
I had also disabled the weather sync (forgot to mention it). Seems to be a lot of little bugs in Sense that need to get fixed.
Why don't you guys do what I did... I have profiles set on setCPU so that when the screen is off the phone runs at 368mhz max and the when the screen is on it'll go up to opp speed... That actually saves alot of battery for me.

Sorry it is weather sync. Yeah keyboard error. I stopped using swype recently for this very reason, but touch input isnt perfect either but still much better for me.
Ya if you are using OC based kernel then use SetCPU to scale your mCPU. Set few profiles for example my max is 1.7ghz, avg is 1.2ghz, min is 768mhz, idle is 368mhz.

How To Extend Battery Life

So, i managed to get 21 hours out of my battery and that was with quite a bit of usage and with the WiFi turned on all day.
I'll share what i'm running.
I'm no expert so i'm only posting what is working for me to help new people out.
Juice Defender

Ditch your charger - increasing battery life has never been so easy!
Always carrying your charger around? You don't need to!
JuiceDefender intelligently and transparently manages for you mobile connectivity and other battery-sensitive components, greatly improving battery life.
I have this set to aggressive.
Android Booster

Android Optimizer. Make your droid faster. Save battery power. Monitor traffic
Android Booster FREE is one of the most powerful apps that can improve your Android’s performance!
You will find all the following productivity/utility solutions in this app:
Task Killer + Battery Saver + Memory Booster + Uninstaller + File Manager + Settings + Network Manager + Process Manager
These can optimize your android phone via task managers, battery manager, one-click turn on/off wifi, mobile network manager, Bluetooth manager and so on.
The Coolest thing is the Android booster Widget. It’s totally one-click optimization to manage WiFi, Bluetooth, mobile network & power display.
I placed the widget on the screen and after every use of the phone, i always click the optimize button.
APNDroid

I use this because i noticed that even though i connect through Wifi quite a lot, my phone is still using my data plan also. To make sure i don't use my data plan when i don't want to, i've placed the widget on the screen.
Other
Screen Brightness set to Auto
Bluetooth off unless i need it (AndroidBooster can sort this also)
Same applies to Wifi.
As i said, this is what works for me and i'm just sharing in case it helps anyone here.
Thanks

I'm not a power user.. but I'm getting ~2 days use simply by using Timeriffic with a schedule such as
11pm - turn on Airplane mode (ie. shut off all radios).. I'm in bed and dont want to hear from you
6am - remove Airplane mode
7am - enable Bluetooth while I drive to work
8am - disable Bluetooth, set ringer to vibrate
5pm - turn ringer back on, enable Bluetooth for drive home
6pm - turn Bluetooth off
rinse, wash, repeat (the 7am,8am,5pm events are only on weekdays).
There are multiple apps which support this kind of thing.
I've gone through this with every Android phone I've owned. Juice defender etc just isn't for me. In my opinion it just takes away one of the main features of having an Android phone in the first place.
With a few battery cycles, the battery life will improve. Once we have custom roms it will be even better.

One thing that many people forget about is how often email syncs, how often you have your weather syncing, and any other apps that sync.
Menu / settings / about phone / tell HTC / remove V on both settings and i dropped down to 38ma with wifi on in standby.
5 minutes later i got 6ma.
If this is what was taking all power from the phone i will have a super phone with the best battery

See if just don't get you people. If your just using your phone for bluetooth vibrate rinse not repeat etc? Wtf why do you have a Sensation 4G? It's a powerhouse phone so if your attempting to get 48 hours of battery life(which basically means your phones screen is never on) Why waste 250 on a phone. Get a dumbphone with bluetooth and your battery can last you a week. Now if your a regular person with a smart phone you simply accept that your battery life will be shot your trade battery life for perfornance. If your emails aren't syncing, facebook, twitter, weather, google music, etc. Then a smart phone is pointless. I use my phone white a bit and i've been getting about 9 hours usage with my phone which is greatttt I play angry birds every thing syncs facebook twitter gmail aim Battleheart etc you name it and I get over 9 hours on a single charge that is great.

Haahaa....very true!!!!
People get Obsessed with battery usage.
What is the point of having this or any superphone if your gonna cut it's balls off from day one.
If you condition the battery properly from day one, you can use it heavily and still get easily a full day....and that's more than anyone should ever ask for from a device this powerful AND beautiful

Sorry maybe you missed the point of the thread..........
There's no such thing as a regular user as you state, everyone does things differently. The point of this thread is to contribute methods that extend maxing out our perfomance, game playing, and all productivity on our devices. If you have nothing to add besides rants and flames, I suggest you just hush, watch and learn.
Right now we can't access/disable some programs that really drain juice. So every little bit helps til we get root.

yea its reading the information from the device wrong. email the developer, email address is in his program on the android market
I dont know why I bother having a smartphone, it spends so much time in the charger, I might as well call it landline
First thing, I stopped using all battery and current monitoring apps when I realized they were a part of the problem and not part of a solution. They are simply drawing power and keeping the phone awake and are not really accurate anyways. Only actual usage time matters. Can you use it throughout the whole day with "normal" (for you!) usage patterns?
If you have something draining your battery over time, it is likely to be an app keeping the phone awake so it doesn't go into deep sleep mode.
Connect the USB cable to the phone and PC and run this command:
Code:
adb shell dumpsys alarm > AlarmDump.txt
Then have a look at the file, towards the bottom you get Stats. In here is the breakdown of what's causing the device to wake up. (h/t catnap)
The screen may be the single biggest drawer of power, so I usually suggest disabling auto-brightness and setting the brightness to a level you can work with, for me around 25% works. I also edit my build.prop and change the supplicant timer from 120 to 900 to prevent WiFi from pinging my remembered networks as often, turn off open network notification, and run the mobile network on 3G instead of 4G since it uses less power.
Some other things to do include turning off pocket mode under the sounds settings (turns off proximity detector) and disable vibrate feedback.

Battery only lasts 4 hours now, is it the WIFI problem causing it?

When I first got my phone it would last all day without any issues at all. Today I unplugged it at 7am and with very very little use it was dead by noon. A few phone calls, maybe 5 text messages and thats about it. No facebook, no email, no video.........
When I go into the "Battery" section it says that "Android System" is using 80% (next most used is "standby" at 7%), when I touch the bar graph it shows that the Wi-Fi and Awake are both solid blue, does this mean these are the main culprit?
I have rooted my phone, but didn't flash anything. After rooting I installed AdFree and ran it. I disabled quite a few bloatware apps as well. I've noticed that the last 3 days it really started dying fast, so I uninstalled my most recent apps, but that didn't help.
My GS3 does have the problem where it's constantly switching between 3G/4G and Wi-Fi, many times per minute. I've done the *#0011# and switched wifi power saving mode OFF, but yesterday that didn't seem to help at all. I know it resets after each reboot and I'm sure it was OFF yesterday.
What else can I do without flashing a custom rom?
I guess it just takes a post in the help section to figure it out yourself......well almost.
My screen isn't shutting off! If I get a txt and don't check my phone, the screen stays on until I manually turn it off. If I hit the home button and just sit the phone down, the screen will not shut off.
I've gone into the "Display" settings section and made sure a timeout time was selected and it is. I've changed it from 30 to 15 and that doesn't matter. I've unchecked the smartstay option and that didn't help either. If I manually turn it off, then it's fine until something wakes it up.
WHY WON'T MY SCREEN SHUT OFF???
I just pulled out the battery for 15 seconds and it's working fine now, but I would like to see if I can figure out why it does so next time I can fix it.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Are you using the stock charger or another brand? Some aftermarket ones WILL cause the screen to stay on until it's cycled on and off a couple of times. Also check that it's not your actual router, my net gear router seams to "pulse" at times causing the wifi to continually go on and off on my phone. Had to reset my routers settings to fix. Keeping your wifi toggle on should not use that much juice, unlike older phones where it would continuously search and kill the battery.

So today the battery died before 11:00AM again (unplugged at 6:30AM) I showered and began eating breakfast and noticed that it was down to 89% wihout ANY use, this time the screen was not stuck on. I downloaded a free battery monitoring app called GSam Battery.
It's telling me that my Android System used 85.2% of the battery. This program allows me to touch "Android System" and it gives me more information, which I don't fully understand. I took one screenshot, scrolled down and took another.
Please help!

[Q] iOS to KitKat. huge difference. first week report.

This is my first android phone ever, so please forgive my ignorance i have been using nexus 5 for the last 1 week and I have few questions
1. Security : any applications that are install asks me permission how to access almost all of my data, contacts, phone location, phone status wireless, this is making me nervous
2. Virus protection : i had completely forgotten about having an antivirus on my iphone because there was no need. I would like to know which is the best antivirus and firewall for my nexus 5 i don't care if i have to pay for the software. I just want to be sure that's my banking transactions and bill payments are secure.
3. Battery : oh my god!!! Takes very very long time to charge and very very short time discharge. I wonder what is eating my battery. Even after 4 - 5 hours of charging it does not fully charge. Same when it is connected to my laptop and same when it is connected to my car charger. This is really annoying me. Am i doing something wrong here.
4. OK Google : ok google works only at the home screen is this how it is supposed to be. Ok google freezes or does not respond when there is no Internet. Is it possible to call out the name of the caller while the phone is ringing
5. Lock screen: is it possible to see the preview of messages and e-mails notifications on the lock screen just like i phone is there any application that can help me with this. I do not want how to unlock my phone every time to read a notification
Lol mine is charging so fast. It needs an hour to finish the charging.

you should do a factory wipe and let the device reset itself. max charge time from 0% to 100% is 2 and a half hours with the stock charger and cable
it's probably discharging so fast because of things like 'wifi always on' and 'always scan wifi' and 'high accuracy' location mode. if you want optimal battery life you should go through all the settings and pick stuff out. auto brightness is notorious for being a battery hog. especially on the N5 since it makes it too bright.
If you're only installing apps from Google Play, there's no need at all for antivirus software on your phone. The malware "problem" on Android is massively overblown. Don't believe the hype.
If your battery is taking that long to charge, something is not right. My phone fully charges in about 2 hours and I can easily get 4-5 hours of screen on time per charge. Try a factory reset, and if that doesn't work, you may need to RMA.
the answer to #5 is to download a widget called dashclock. search the play store for it. it was developed by a google employee. it has tons and tons of extensions which give you "at a glance" information on your lockscreen. you can see anything from detailed battery stats, to sms/mms, e-mails, missed calls, weather, the list goes on and on.
Use the original wall charger. Fast charging needs a charger rated at 1.8 amps iirc. Laptop USB only provides approx 0.5 amp so it will only show charge. Same with many car chargers. Make sure you use a car charger rated for 2.0 amps.

1. Don't you want to know?
2. No.
3. Use the cord that came with the phone. Check your battery usage graph.
4. Some functions require internet. There's an app for that.
5. There's an app for that.
This is my first Android phone too. Google searches have made figuring this stuff out easy.

The N5 can't charge above 1.2 amps with the stock kernel. If you use a 2 amp charger, the phone will still charge at 1.2.
Welcome to Andorid, having made the switch myself early last year, I had similar concerns too. You have however come to the right place to ask help
1. App Ops (search on XDA) if you dont know about it (need to be rooted) or you could use xprivacy Xposed module to disable some permissions.
2. Not required (install from trusted source only) and you are golden.
3. Greenify (root required for some functions) should help. However what you are stating is an abnormal behavior. Go into setting and look at the battery graph and the usage per app/sys
4. I dont use this feature, so no comment
5. Dynamic notifications app is great, or if you use light flow it will wake the screen up for notification or as someone mentioned above dashclock.
1. iOS would require all the same permissions as android... no need to worry.
2. same as 1, no difference really compared to iOS. Most risks would be the same, you'll be fine as long as you don't pirate apps etc.
3. I don't experience this, if you use the supplied charger and usb it'll be fine. Android devices generally charge slower when just using a usb to a computer etc.

I think nexus 5 so good ,that reason why i am in here , xda forums !!! hehe

4. OK Google only works from the home screen on 4.4.x or you can get a third party app that offers the same function from anywhere but say good by to battery life most likely

1. iOS apps need the same permissions. They just dont tell you
2. No need. Just don't install warez
3. Charges fast on ac. Fasted phone I've had. Usb / car chargers supply half the power

actually anandtech.com showed that the N5 is limited to 1.5amps. but you are right about the stock charger only being a 1.2 amp charger

I will add something as well in your help :
1. In iOS they just don't tell you what the apps are accessing. Still want to prevent some, then use app ops (but it required to be rooted, so I won't advice to jump on unlocking and rooting right away)
2.Not required as long as you install from playstore, read the reviews a bit before installing any application. Still want to use, you can have a look at avast.
3. Few advices for battery save,
- turn off always scanning (settings > wifi > press settings [the three . on right bottom] > Advanced > Uncheck always scanning)
- Change location settings (settings > location > mode = battery saving)
- If it is really not required, turn off "ok google" hot word detection. Open google now page, goto bottom, click 3 dot > settings > voice > uncheck hotword detection. My battery life is precious than a single "ok google". I can tap on microphone icon if needed. (that was my view)
- Switch to 2G when not required. There is an application called tasker, you can automate switching 2g/3g/4g networks as per application, (and many more, must have) event etc. Very useful app. (some example - here and here). But again it is optional.
- I found google default brightness is too high for my need. Use LUX application to do so. Link few samples on different lighting condition and you will be good to go.
- Last & best : Use franko kernel (but need to unlock boot loader)
Battery charging : As other mentioned use wall charger.
4. Ok Google - I don't use it.
5.dashclock is best option in my view. Anyway, to get it in lock screen, a step is required. Settings > security > check enable widgets. After installation of the app, lock the phone, tap power button to goto lock screen, now swipe from left to add a widget.

While you probably haven't gotten around to rooting yet I would suggest looking into that and installing greenify to save some battery. Also turn off wifi scanning. There are a lot of ways to save battery so I suggest using the search function and reading the forums. Lots of useful stuff in here.

Welcome to xda. I would definitely read up on some of the stickies articles and other topics that have been posted.
To reiterate what has mostly been said already:
1) iOS doesn't tell you it just does uses those permissions anyway.
2) I have never heard if anyone getting a virus on their android. I think it is one of many misconceptions about android running amok.
3) this is the fastest phone I have had that charges on ac power. Keep in mind that USB ports and car chargers only put out about half the power of a regular outlet. Also keep in mind the hardware you are running. Assuming you did not have a 5s you now have a quad core phone with 2gb of ram and so on. More hardware more battery
4) I personally use nova launcher was not a big fan of google play launcher. It's a work in progress.
5) using dash clock is probably your best solution to that. I do not lock my phone at all so I just pull down to see my notifications.
Android is not prone to viruses. Due to the enhancements made in 4.1 and 4.4, android is one of the most secure mobile OSes available. Yes I said it, iOS fans gonna hate, but its true. Less than 0.00000000? Of apps are actually malicious and attempt to evade runtime security. iOS would use almost the same permissions, but to keep it simpler and more user friendly, they choose not to display the permissions screen. The battery is kinda normal, but you must be really bored to rely on SoT as a battery benchmark. Also, check out Dashclock lock screen widget

turn your brightness down.
I think to many people overlook this or think they missing out if the screen is not SUPER bright.
Might brightness is off auto, way down and my screen turns off in like 15 secs.
Now your question with rapid discharge points back to the comment about no data and okay google.
Are you in an area with bad coverage because at my job we have HORRIBLE coverage at my desk and my battery will kill itself some days. We used to have a booster on our building and I could go 2 days without charging my phone. SERIOUSLY TWO DAYS!
Since ATT came out and pulled our booster Im back to a faster death just sitting as it looks for signal.
One thing you can do with the 5 I love is set the preferrred network off LTE if you know there is no LTE. this will save you some juice for sure.
There are a lot of tweaks you can do to save battery life, just fool with the phone until you get what you find is a good balance.
as for security, youre fine, just dont install some Chinese 3rd party banking app. Always take the time to read reviews (be sure there are plenty and they are legit) and even look online.
Im pretty particular with what I install but Im also not an app whore

Exactly. I thought that this phone had terrible battery life when I first got it, but it turned out that I just had the brightness set too high. I keep it at about 1/3, and I average about 4-5 hours of screen on time. It's still plenty bright for my purposes. My shutoff time is always set to a half hour though. I don't like my screen to get dim or shut off unless I tell it to.
