Will the White get dirty/yellow? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys, decided to get the Note 10.1.
I think the white version looks better, but I hate electronics that will get yellow. Any ideas? Otherwise I will just get the gray version.

Well my white SGS2 got very dirty and gray if that means anything. Just get the graphite one and put it in a nice case.

well, i hate white! i hate fingerprint and getting dirty!
so i bought a cover,white too!
i must be out of my mind!

It is the back cover which always easy to get dirty or got patches from the case (other color).
But still, white 'looks' bigger.

I guess there is a chance of that. But no one has owned it long enough to know! I usually buy black items so no history to go by.
I am sure many will question my logic, but as a precautionary measure, I plan on keeping the manufacturer's thick clear plastic backing on it for several months to a year. I do this with new laptop computers too (keep plastic on back of lid). The thing is, you will hardly feel /notice it when using the 10.1 device. It takes away the worry about scratches and discolouration from wear and tear or from coloured cases. Plus, if u r selling, can inch up the price via the 'this is a hardly used item' argument

So true. I quess im a hybrid, my bezel is white but the back is grey. Purchased from BB and the box was sealed....

Bought the grey model! The white looks nice, but just didnt want to take the chance.
Thinking of getting the Note 2 in gray, so it will match.

The SGS3 case seems to really repel the dirt, if the SGnote 120.1 case is made of the same material it won't get dirty...
SGS2 white body was a joke, had a friend whose S2 was really bad looking by the end of thed 1st week. My S3 has been with me for over 2 months now and no problems...
Depends what Samsung used in the manufacture of the 10.1's body...

Yes they may have really improved it. I stayed away from white because of my SGS2 getting stained so quickly. White does look nice however since I have mine in a case anyway graphite is good.

Put a protective film on it and don't worry about it. I prefer the polycarbonate back to aluminum, but aluminum does have greater abrasion resistance. By installing a protective film, you eliminate the one disadvantage of polycarbonate.

[Q] Color-changes on DesireZ body (because of bag)?!

Hi Guys,
i am thinking of buying a DesireZ at the end of the month. The so called "Hinge-Problem" is none for me (tried the phone in some stores), BUT:
I fount a topic on a german forum, where many users report of color-changes near the metal-parts on the plastic of their phone - some think it is caused by some bags, others say it is the plastic itself which changes color perhaps because of water or sweating....
Here is a link to some pictures a guy posted there to show you what i mean: http://img19.imageshack.us/g/pc0343121024x768.jpg/
On the Pic 2 and 3 you see some red/purple spots....
Can anyone here confirm this??
If this is a material-problem (and this is what it looks like, because users say they tried everything to remove the color without succes....) this would be a no-go for me to buy this phone
Pls help me

The point is, that this guy is not the only one.... there are many concerning about this problem which confuses me a little (maybe i should pick another phone....)
probably from rubbing in my opinion
This is a known issue. Someone brought this up in a thread on here not too long ago. Some people said their phone changed color without the bag. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the oil from your hands when you old the phone or the acid. I had a pair of glasses do the same thing, and the eye doctor said it was due to the acid in my skin or something along those lines. I put a case on my phone and have had no problems so far.
That's to bad
Go buy a cheap g1 oem slip case thing. I love mine. I got 4 sitting right here next to my bed since I loose them all the time they r like 3 bucks a piece

I've been using one of these slip cases on my phone since I got it. Its a great fit and protects my phone from the innards of my pockets =)
Needless to say, I don't have any discoloration issues here.
ah yes.. I have this problem too.. I brought it to the service center and they change the housing for me.. and the back feels sticky too i feel that this is due to charging the phone and the back of the phone gets too hot..
I bought a cheap holster for my Nexus One and now it has similar markings as those pictures, now for my Z I bought a OEM HTC Leather holster, yes it was a bit expenssive but so far nothing the Z is like new. moral of my story ? spend a little extra get a better case or holster etc, stay away from chepos.
i have some discoloration on the gray plastic on the sides of the keyboard. The demo unit at our t-mobile also has it too.
I have no discoloration on my phone what so ever. But I keep mine in a sleeve style case. I have had out since launch. In my opinion, u won't get much better build quality then this phone. At least not on an android.

My wife has red discoloration on the corners of her G2. Hers is from a new red purse she got. It has a little pocket that her phone fits in and I believe the dye leached into the plastic.
My G2 has no color issues but the film is coming off my battery case as seen in other threads.

iv had mine since it was released and i dont have it in any kind of case, im pretty carefull with my stuff.
i use it every day and have dropped it a couple of times. i have no discoloration or scratches.
same thing with my "z" but its not a " carring case" issue
I have red coloration on the corners near the track pad
I did contacted clove.co.uk where I bought it and they said that they contacted the HTC and they said that there is no red base plastic used and it's not the coating coming off and that was caused by some external contact. Well, I carried it in the jeans pocket made of dark red fabric, but is that really extreme conditions to dye the coating that easy? I don't think so.
No issues with mine, I luv it.
Have 3 different cases and no issues.

Not sure bout s4 build quality. Shattered screen

Well my fiance had her S4 for 3 days and now this. My son through the phone on my kitchen floor and this is the result. She had a snap on casemate case. Now i know its my sons fault for throwing the phone. Hes thrown my note 2 plenty of times. Hes thrown her S3 plenty of times and never had issues. I know the S4 is alot lighter then those phones so i wonder if anything was sacrificed. Anyway filed a claim with assurion and makin her get an otterbox or ballistic for now

I'm sure you'll get lots of comments about, "it's high damage resistance, not damage proof".
http://www.neowin.net/news/galaxy-s...gorilla-glass-3-is-still-not-impact-resistant
Thats so sad. :crying: I dropped mine from about 4-5 feet onto gravel. It landed vertically striking the bottom of the phone near the mic. Just a small scratch is all that came from it. From the way I understand things, lighter weight would help to prevent the phone from breaking by limiting the amount of force that the glass had to absorb. striking the corner of the glass is the weakest point on any phone as Gorilla glass 3 is build to withstand more direct force without cracking. I suppose you could call that shear stress: The force applied when you press on the screen. The result is that the corner of the phone is without a doubt the weakest point due to the force absorbing properties of the glass as striking the corner absorbs the full force of the fall over the smallest area. Once the integrity of the screen is compromised, the cracks spider web.
Its just luck dude, you win some, you lose some. I'd keep the kid away from the phones to be on the safe side

All depends on where it lands.
thought I would chime in. As I understand, the Gorilla Glass 3 used in S4 is a new tech that lets the glass be thinner. Basically you get same or slightly worse resistance comparing to S3, but in a thinner layer of glass. It let Samsung decrease the thickness of the device.
Note that the surface of the glass is bigger on S4 comparing to S3, so it is more prone to damage. Buy a good case for your phone!
My preferred case style is a thin layer of silicon or TPU inside with a harder plastic shell outside.
back in the old days, when i got my BlueAngel, i immediately got am aluminum case (the one with the window), then a leather fliptop. My sister got a Prophet but didn't get any case for it. I found a good deal for a magnesium Proporta case online, asked my sis if she wanted to get one for her PDA so we can save on shipping. She declined, told me she's always extra careful. Long story short, a week after, got my Proporta, dropped the BlueAngel a hundred times, often times with the case opening and the BA flying away, but then most of the force had already dissipated. But her Prophet? I guess about a month after i got the Proporta, she dropped her Prophet onto the granite floor, heard a crack, and found her Prophet's screen was all black about a third from the bottom. costed her about a third of what she paid for her Prophet to replace the screen.
Cost of the Proporta? hmmm a tenth? Morale of the story, if you invest on expensive phones, consider also a good enough case to protect it. After the BA, i got a Nokia E72, and then a BB Bold, all dressed in Otterbox's Defender. My S4 is due to arrive in a week or so; right now i'm tossing the coin between another Defender or a Seidio Convert. too bad they don't make Lunatiks for Samsung
just my.02
Seriously, was wondering the same. I know Note II has cracked for plenty of people too, and a lot of luck is involved, etc, but - look up android authority drop tests, both Note II and S4 had identical impact and still S4 glass broke.
They have different screens. The gs4 is thinner to bring the actual screen closer to your eyes. The note 2 is gg2 and has an extra layer for the wacomm hardware.

Just for completeness of fair posting, I would like to point out that my phone didn't break today

S4 Build Quality : Plastic > Aluminum

I've had all sorts of Android phones. I loved all the metal ones (Moto and HTC) and stuck with the Galaxy for the developer community, camera, and not getting rid of SD cards and removable batteries. Although my next upgrade batteries and internal memory should be good enough to let that go. I loved the One but 4 MP is 4 MP when your not indoors at night.
I won't let any comments on build quality bother me again. Forget shattering in my pocket, I have dropped my GS4 numerous times with zero effect. I use a $10 case. And now, I ran it over with my car. On concrete. The kind with tar and rocks all in it. Diagonally, straight over the entire phone with tire tracks on it.
Zero damage to screen, all sensors work normally, not even a scratch on the case or screen or edges. And it even popped out of the case while being run over. I guess it's true there is a reason they use plastic for heavy duty stuff in commercial tools and equipment, and aluminum is soda can material.
See attached pics.
Ya and function is more important than appearance anyways

Plastic is fine with me, every phone, plastic or metal will break if the screen lands just right. Despite all the claims to the contrary, I find the S4 to be great. The video below should debunk most nay sayers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3mhAVC6cBA
I completely agree that plastic > metal for phone cases. A metal case on a phone is a serious MINUS to me.

Wow. I'm even happier now that I chose this over the One.
i kept reading reviews about the s4 about lower end build quality this, plastic lower build quality that, etc. etc.... but have been impressed by how the phone feels. feels solid. i am constantly amazed how that little thin plastic back clicks in so well and feels so solid. main reason i chose the s4 over the htc one is accessible sd card slot and battery. that's it. i'll take this kind of plastic build over unibody metal every time if it means i get to put in myown sd card and be able to switch batteries.
I got the One at launch and just got an S4 a week ago, was trying to decide which to keep... Picked up my One last night after using S4 all week and it suddenly felt heavy and clunky. I'm keeping the S4.

I'm in the same boat, been using the One for a month or so and picked up a GS4 during the half off sale. While my decision will come down more to software than hardware (need to find the right ROM for GS4, still working through this Loki stuff >.<), I definitely prefer the in-hand feel of the One. At a mm or so less wide and having a curved back, it just feels like it fits better to me. I have found that the weight is basically a nonissue, though I know some people get really worked up one way or the other.
As for plastic vs. metal, obviously people who say "plastic is flimsy" are way off, as it is very sturdy, but the One definitely looks nicer after a day of use than the GS4--the glossy finish on the GS4 just soaks up fingerprints like there's no tomorrow. I guess most people use cases, but I've always been a naked-in-pocket kind of guy so that's my biggest beef with the GS4's shell. I wish Samsung would just use a nice matte polycarbonate like some of the Lumias or the One X.
Oh well, it's still a fun debate.

how did nobody take the time to ask OP HOW THA HECK DID YOU RUN YOUR S4 WITH YOUR CAR????
To the guy who called this a fanboy post: I've owned every major brand of android phone of all materials and my wife bought an HTC 8x at my suggestion. I clearly stated I got the s4 assuming build quality to be something I had to deal with. I felt the need to post because I ran it over with a 3500 lb car. That's not fanboy. That's credit.
And yeah I ran it over leaving the lake packing my car lol I set it down on the ground and got my kid, dog, and stuff in. Stupid but true. I'm aware I got lucky but I've ruined phones doing far less. Including my aluminum OG Droid. My wife's 8x shattered on the first drop with a polycarb body. My opinion stands, stupidity and all.

I was talking about the full case from Samsung not the s view cover. I ended up picking up the light blue one from a local best buy. Only had it on for an hour or so but I have to say I'm really liking this case. Doesn't add Much weight or bulkiness to the phone and still feels very solid. Pretty impressed.
Edit: my only gripe so far is that the headphone cut out is a little small. Headphones with a straight plug work just fine but if they have a curve they don't fit into the slot... kind of a bummer as I use an auxiliary cord in my car.

Review
I have this case for over a month now, and I'm pretty much happy with it. The only thing I didn't like was that here in Saudi Arabia, only 3 colors were available for sale, Blue, White and Pink. I know there is a Black/Dark Grey variant of this protective cover but unfortunately it's not available here.
Here is a simple review that I manage to put:
Official Samsung Protective Cover+ for Galaxy S4
Pros
A simple yet functional design.
Protects the whole back and sides of the phone without the bulky appearance and feel.
It also protects the glass cover of the primary camera by giving it a few millimeters of clearance from the back.
Sturdy back, conforming and flexible sides for easy installation and removal.
The cover for the Volume Rocker and Power Button is soft and easy on the fingers. Doesn't give that rigid feel like other cases on the market.
There is an available slot if you like putting a hand or neck strap on your phone.
Cons
There is a little bit of space between the phone and the case, and if left unattended, dirt may settle-in. At least monthly, remove the phone from the case and clean it with a soft moistened piece of cloth with a non-alcohol based cleaning solution.

mine came in the mail today. i gave my little mini-review of it in another thread, so this is just copy and pasted:
this case definitely lives up to all the hype i've been reading about it. the buttons respond really, really well; and it's a nice combo of soft materials on the sides and a hard plastic back. if the green was more lime (or neon), this would be my daily driver without a question. since my "negative" isn't even really a negative, i would highly recommend this case.

Yeah it's not real leather...what, you thought you'd buy a $700 device and it would come with a few inches of leather?
/sarcasm lol, it really is messed up like how our phones are plastic and not alluminized

Reasons plastic covers are good is that if you drop your phone and your cover cracked or become ugly somehow, you can buy a replacement easily unlike the xperia z1/2 and iPhone 5s

leather vs aluminum
I have no problem with the plastic back, I think it feels nice and practical. I would much rather have real metal around the body, instead of the shiny plastic. This current material is the most sensitive to scratching and to getting chipped.
Metal body means a sealed phone almost all the time. I'll take a plastic body if it means I can get to the battery. It's what's inside that counts. I'll always choose capabilities over looks, and I'll never understand why people do different.
Click thanks if I helped you.

i am glad my phone is plastic rather than aluminum, the state my old htc desire was in after a few drops, it just dents and gets sharp edges, maybe the quality of the materials have improved since my desire days, but just my opinion , also the phone is lighter!
+10 for all the comments... The plastics used in todays Samsung devices have many more benefits than drawbacks... leather would have been impractical if not impossible so that's a non-issue... aluminum blocks and distorts signal and dents very easily on a drop... plastics keep the cost down when replacing back covers and allow accessibility, good signal characteristics, resilience, and many options for fit and finish.... I wouldn't change a thing

To be honest, I really like it this way. I just hope it lasts though.
plastic or not just get a good cover (you may find metal covers) and forget about the problem, the phone is sturdy enough well built no crackling or so and so light in weight due to that plastic and have nice specifications top notch,i do not like leather for the sake of animals !!!! hahaha
It's called a FAUX Leather look for a reason...
It clearly says Faux Leather in the specs. So if you feel cheated, you should've read the specs.
