Turning on Data shuts down phone - HTC Sensation

So whenever I turn on mobile data, the phone just shuts down for no reason. I've tried 4 different ROMS (VI, ARHD, Elegancia, and Hyper NonSense) and it happens without fail, no matter the firmware. How do I fix this?

Which kernel are you using? Have you tried different kernels?

I've tried the latest Faux and Sebastian FM kernels

Are you under clocking ? If so raise your value of your underclock , could be its set too low . Best wishes

Does it do this on a fresh install before you do any customizations of the rom?
If so it may be a hardware problem. It could be related to the sim card but I think its a long shot. If the sim is damaged them MAYBE its causing a small electrical short but Im really reaching out on a limb here.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app

I don't think I've underclocked and I've been wiping all partitions except the SD card before the install. I actually think it might be the battery at fault as it's started to reboot even when data isn't turned on so I'm going to try calibrating it and see how that goes.

Calibration is not the issue.
If you don't think you underclocked then you havent. Its not something you can accidentally.
I dont think its a battery issue. There are a lot of other functions on the phone that have a bigger battery drain that mobile data. If the battery couldnt take the extra strain you would see more shut offs.
Try changing sim cards just to rule that out. Find anyone else with a sim card from your network and see if his sim in your phone fixes the problem.
Also, just to rule it out, format the sd card. Copy everything to your computer. Format the card. Copy everything back. (Or the quicker test is to physicly remove the sd card, then see if the data still kills the phone)

Ok so I ordered a new battery and I properly calibrated it and flashed ARHD with a clean install. I've been using it for 2 days now with data on and I haven't had a single issue. I think it was an issue with my battery but I'll check if it stays stable.

[Q] Random reboots

I recently got a new Inspire off of eBay and immediately rooted and flashed it. I used attn1's method to root and I've tried multiple ROM's... Only time the reboots happen are when I turn the screen off or when it turns off itself.. Also, it only happens when it's unplugged or when the LED isn't flashing. I thought it was SetCPU at first but I even tried it without SetCPU installed and it still does it. I've wiped everything, repartitioned the SD Card, cleared cache, system memory, data, etc. and still it keeps doing it. I'm out of ideas, and it's not my first time doing this either. It's not like I can go return it to AT&T or anything. Can anyone help me?

Check the kernel u r using to see if it uses any undervolting. Either way, try changing the kernel to one that does not employ and under volting and see if that helps.
Radio has nothing to do with this.
Some of the possible reasons based on my exp (might or might not hold good, but worth a try):
1. Undervolted to an extent ur hardware cannot handle (just cos it works on mine doesn't mean it has to work on urs)
2. Try using SetCPU and set min. speed at 307 (I think in many kernels this is at 230).
3. Try using SetCPU and set min speed at screen off to 230 or 307 (battery killers, but well, should help u isolate the issue)
4. Try changing the ROM u have on (if u want to use the same, try downloading it again; sometimes downloads could be messed up). But I would still recommend trying out some other ROM.
Most importantly, if u r restoring apps with Tibu, do NOT restore this time. Try not restoring any apps and data and see how it goes. It could be a case some stray app that u r restoring that is causing some internal FC that is rebooting ur phone.
And I am not sure what you mean repartitioning the SD card or why u need it for. Inspire has ample space internally that most people would never run out of it.
I think I may have figured it out! I don't think my phone likes to be underclocked... idk why setcpu jumps from 300mhz to like 768mhz and nothing in between but the lowest I could go was 768 without it restarting... What is stock speed usually cause I have a feeling my battery is about to be raped with no lube lol

S.o.d(screen of death)

So I just got my g2x, rooted,nv and cwm. Flashed cm7 and I keep getting s.o.d(screen of death). I thought was rom problem so I.changed rom and im on xdblasters 1.1.0 and keep on getting them. Any solution orhelp would be appreciated.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Not sure I know of a rom for g2x called xdblasters.
Also, what kernal are you using? Are you overclocking or undervolting? Are you using setcpu or pimpmycpu? What is your max and min cpu settings? When you flashed, what was your procedure for wiping? Did you fix permissions after flashing? Did you use a program to restore apps? Did you use that program to restore system settings? Did you choose to restore apps and settings from google account?
The answers to all of these questions could help determine what you've got going on.
I apologize, its x boarders. And well I am using fauxs newest kernel currently using 1.1 overclock but it would also happen while at stock cpu with previous rom.i don't restore with google but I use titanium backup for batch. When I do new roms I always follow the clean slate rule;Wipe data, cache, dalvik, bat stats. occasionally I forget fixing permissions but I do when I get alot of force closes.

I didnt' see you mention formatting /system under mounts and storage. This is a critical step.
If it were me, I would try to keep everything as basic as I could each step of the way so that i could try to pinpoint the issue. Start by wiping everything (including sd card...just backup your user added stuff to your pc) and install a stock rom/kernal. See if it occurs stock...who knows? It's possible your phone is bad. Then if it doesn't misbehave with stock, then I would wipe everything again, including sd cards (interal and external), and flash cm7 (keeping cm7 kernal). I would try manually installing apps again, rather than using titanium backup or google restore. Just hook up to wi-fi (so you don't waste your data mileage) and go to market/myapps and redownload (hopefully you have a list of what you have).
But something to point out. On my phone, when I use CM7 (with stock kernal), I have to increase my minimum cpu frequency to either 312 or 456 instead of the default 216....216 seems to cause my phone to get stuck with the black screen also. The same thing happens when I run an undervolt kernal. So I've learned that my phone simply doesn't like undervolting, overclocking, or lettign the cpu run lower than 400MHz. Maybe that might help you out.
i was about to back up my sd and reformat it for that reason.I already tried formatting eemc mount or internal mem, and nothing. I also stopped using uv kernels and i kept my cpu min at 506 to keep it from doing, but with no result.I just flashed the newest release of xboarders 1.1.1 and i already got 3 sod while the rom is stock with nothing added. I am starting to think phone is bad. I bought the phone on Craigslist, so i might be S.O.L. i Appreciate
what should my mounts look like when i do a system format?

have you tried a new battery? I believe most of the G2x problems are likely due to a bad batch of batteries.. why you ask I have come to this conclusion? If I OC heavily OR run the LED light when the battery gets low >30%, my phone will shut off. This would conclude the battery cannot supply the needed current for the phone at the lower battery levels... this is my particular battery but I wouldn't doubt there are worse batteries out there AND/OR reported battery levels that are much higher than actual and getting the same problem I have encountered. Food for thought.

I agree with him... I had worst case of s.o.d with my g2x. Atleast 3 times a day I had to take battery out... but I solved it by doing the following
1. Increase min cpu speed 300 or more.
2. Discharging the phone completely and then recharging it completely.
I barely get s.o.d. may be once in 2 weeks. And whenever I do get em. I give my phone a discharge recharge cycle... then its good for next two weeks

Phone wont wake? Or what? A quick google search for "android screen of death" and "g2x screen of death" revealed pretty much nothing.
Have you pulled a logcat?
I always fully charge and discharge battery for proper calibration. Doesn't seem to be helping in any matter. I also stopped using any CPU management because I thought that was.

Its hardware defect. No matter what ROM you put on the phone, it will continue. Youve gotta call TMO and get a replacement. Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear.
I agree with the battery theory. I purchased two generic batteries from ebay and they last 3 times as long and have resolved many of the resetting and SOD issues that I was having. Also, updated ROMS seemed to help, and not letting it fall asleep while you are playing games or something memory intensive.
Well I bought a battery, hoping that helps a bit. So far its a lil better than usual. Using stock voltage kernel. When I get new battery I will test

[Q] Camera crashes phone

Droid Charge, rooted, PBJ 7-31 SV Kernel, SD Speed Increase
I've only had this phone a couple weeks, but I think this is a new problem. When I try to take a picture, the phone freezes up. You hear an abbreviated shutter sound, the flash fires, and the screen goes black. None of the vol+ power, vol+ home power, etc; do anything. The only way to get the phone working again is to pull the battery.
In doing some simple testing, it only seems to do it when the flash is enabled. The camcorder works fine also.
Sound familiar to anyone?

its a known issue afaik, probably kernel related but don't quote me on it... haven't heard of a fix aside from maybe reflashing/re-odining your rom
Not happening to me, can we get some other info like your kernel, rom and free space?
Beamed from my Droid Charge using the XDA premium app
I have the same problem. It only seems to happen when the battery gets low, around 30% and the flash on. Pull the battery and restart the phone shows it did not take the picture.
I am running Eclipse 1.31, peanutbutta jelly time kernal, and I have 28.91gb free space.
That is a sign that you are undervolting too aggresively.
Elucid, im not sure thats it either. I've taken hundreds of pics with my phone. This morning while taking pics of my kids for first day of school. The cam crashed my phone. I mean super crashed. Pulled battery and reset, and my acore, swype, and android keyboard were gone. Had to completely ODIN my phone.
I have had mine crash and when I recovered i started getting all kinds of force close errors and had to odin back to stock.
I was running gummycharge with several versions of the peanutbutter jelly. I went totally back to stock and then flashed humble. Humble seems to have this problem less, but I'm not 100% sure.
I have found that the crash usually occurs when the phone is multitasking. Running pandora and taking a picture will ALWAYS crash. Running Barnacle Wifi and taking a picture crashes as well.

That seems plausible. How do I check the voltage? I'm running PBJ 8-7, have not made any changes. Should I install SetCPU?

Guys, I really need some help here. Is there another kernel I should try? I'm on the latest PBNJ (not OC). I want to stay rooted but I might have to go back to stock if that fixes the camera problem. your phone might just not like undervolting... I believe imnuts' PBJ voodoo kernel is set at -50mhz across the board which is really conservative, you could always disable lagfix and use his non-voodoo PBJ kernel

I am running the voodoo flavor of PBJT (0730) without the camera issue. I had a couple of freezes and lost root a couple of times on the 0807 release. Wiping cache from CWM fixed the lost root temporarily and going back to 0730 stabilized everything again.
FWIW, there have been several posts on VZW's forums about the camera

I may have found out what the problem is. I was having the same problem and it seems to be the sd card. It HAS to be the Samsung sd card. There is an extensive thread about this on the Verizon forums, with no valid solution being proposed. Some are arguing that its a defective battery, which would make sense.
I'm at the end of my rope with this problem. If this thing locks up one more time when I'm trying to get a shot of my kids, I'm going to be looking at a warranty replacement.

Am I the only one with battery issues?

Inspire 4G with Jellytime as my current rom. Ever since I've been running ICS and now JB I've had issues with my batteries. After charging the battery fully, whether in my phone or in an external charger I boot my phone and when it starts it shows no battery power and automatically shuts down. If I boot into recovery I don't have that issue but the battery level still shows zero. If I boot with the usb plugged into the computer or AC outlet and plugged in the phone it will start fine but it will show zero battery until I unplug the usb cable then it will show 100%.
I have a second Inspire and it the same thing so it isn't specific to my phone. I have not seen this on a GB rom on either phone. I have 6 spare batteries (my son has an Inspire and his does this sometimes but not always), 4 Hyperion and 2 htc batteries. Sometimes with the htc battery the phone will boot normally.
It does not happen on a Gb rom? Have you tried that after the issue began?
I am assuming you are full wiping.
Format data/data factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Wipe bat stats (just in case)
Format all partitions except sd card.
Does it happen right after a clean flash? Not downloading/restoring any apps.
Try booting without the sd card.
Have you tried cleaning the contacts? I think you mentioned it also happens on the other inspire. Are both running the same OS and apps?
Try it with only the htc batteries and not the hyperion.
After this, no idea.
Edit: I believe there was a post several months back with the same or similar issue as yours. Can't remember if it was in the Q&A, general or over the dhd forum.

thanks for the help!
It sounds as a software issue related to ICS/JB only. Very odd.
To simplify the testing, try existz rom. The last one I tested was br5t2 and the reports for B5 sound good.
You know what to do, but boot without the sd card (if you have anything in the sd card).
I would wipe everything. Shut the phone off. Pull the battery, wait for I don't know... An hour? Watch some tv, spend time with your family then flash the rom and booting without the sd card. You can try this if the normal procedure doesn't work.
Heck, if this doesn't work maybe your two inspire phones don't like ics? Perish the thought.
Are you using cwm or 4ext? Shouldn't make a difference.
I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Edit: I believe there was a post several months back with the same or similar issue as yours. Can't remember if it was in the Q&A, general or over the dhd forum. I think that was me, I've become more frustrated so I posted again
I'm also going to try booting into GB and ICS in Boot Manager to see if the same thing happens.
thanks for the help!

When I flashed ics on mine and then tried to restore apps,( from when I was running gb), my phone would freeze and reboot several times, I since reflashed ics and put fresh apps on my phone and it runs great. If your backed up apps were from when you had gb, then they are probably doing that to your battery.

Senstaion Keeps Turning off?

Phone keep randomly turning off, even with a full charge? Tried different Roms, but nothing changes? New battery doesn't do the trick? Me too, until I found a post on a Vodaphone site that said that multiple copies of HTC Sense was to blame, and that if you go into SETTINGS, then APPS, then select the ALL tab, scroll down to HTC SENSE and Disable the oldest one, then reboot, all my problems would be solved.....
And they have
Hope this helps somebody else and hope it's easier to find than the original post
Another thing that may be the culprit is that the battery is not connecting to the pins correctly. In which case a piece of paper can do the trick! Just lodge it above the battery so that it presses it firmly down onto the pins and you should see no more reboots!
Did the trick for me on several occasions
Did the pack the battery thing at first, and it did seem to work until I upgraded the battery to an Anker.....
Also, ROFL at my spelling mistake in the title. Was definately meant to say Sensation

Anyway, i disabled it since yesterday.
Everything fine so far.
Just had a random restart, the first one since I disabled old sense.
ARHD 7.3 stock kernel.

Had a couple more today.
Don't think disabling old htc sense does the trick bro

Only had two shutdowns in the last week and both those were after long gaming sessions in the mornings. That's quite an improvement compared to the 7 or 8 I was getting a day. Sorry it hasn't worked for you though.
Had a few more today too.
I am desperate and willing to try anything.
Maybe, I'll enable it and compare to how it was before.
I should probably get another phone (one S, one mini)
My brother has this problem as well. If you find a fix please tell me.

Randomly restarting of Sensation it's Snapdragon problem, not software. Sometime it's PowerManager IC problem, but then You should see problem with battery level. Once- it's full, and while ago -almost empty etc. Same problem is with Amaze 4G and other with same CPU.
A friend of mine just started having this issue, after upgrading ROM.

My wife's used to have constant reboots daily, stock, rooted, then soff. All rebooted. Then I tried flashing in a certain order the worked with no more reboots.
1.full wipe
2.flash firmware(only once of course)
3.boot into recovery full wipe
4.flash rom

I only flash ROM, as I don't need to flash firmware every time.
I like ARHD ROMs. It happens even when I do full wipe and it laso started happening to a friend, who didn't have this problem before, same ROM as me.

Anyway to fix this?

My post says to only flash firmware once but if u flash firmware then go back to recovery you'll notice it has an error mounting a partition and to perform full wipe. Also phone doesn't boot until wiping cache and dalvik. I'm just saayong what worked for me when I thought all was lost and tried every ROM

I tried wiping cache and dalvik without any benefit regarding restarts/turn-offs.
Anyway, depending on the ROM I am using, sometimes I get random restarts, sometimes turn offs.
Well I suggest trying the method I posted. I know sounds like it won't do much but I'm I'm telling u I had reboots like crazy everyday and once I flashed in that order it stopped COMPLETLY. So make a back up and try to start all over with firmware and everything.

OK, I will try that.
Anyway, I was on stock kernel and now I just flashed SebastianFM, see how this works, better or worse.
I'm also thinking about trying another ROM.
//LE: with SebastianFM's Overclocked Kernel, I already had a few restarts :-\
