[Q] How to make a RUU from a Nandroid Backup ? - HTC One S

Hey Guys
So I unlocked my phone's bootloader last week, and installed The AxiomS ROM.
I was pretty excited given all the epic features. Anyway my excitement soon turned
to regret. My files are getting corrupt (Images, Videos, APK's, everything...) and
my battery life has been very lower than I had on my stock ROM. I thought I might
run into trouble with the Custom ROM so I made a Nandroid backup of my Stock
ROM. The problem is, apparently a stock ROM won't run unless the bootloader is
relocked. So I restored the backup through recovery, relocked the bootloader, but I
got stuck in a bootloop. Only way I can get a ROM on there after I relocked the boot
loader is to run a RUU from the PC (Correct me if I'm wrong :cyclops: ) I don't want
to download an external stock ROM, so my question is - Is it possible to build a RUU
from my Nandroid backup ?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx guys ! P.S I'm still running AxiomS at the moment...
Will be trying out Team Venom's ViperOneS ROM soon.
Christian

It probably didn't restore the boot.img but you sure can run a stock rom with unlocked bootloader. Try to extract boot.img from backup, unlock bootloader again and flash boot.img through adb or just run the RUU of your stock rom.
T-MobileUS HTC One S running Stock Rooted 2.21.

Just backup and flash Venom following the directions in the thread precisely. BTW, my SD card was getting corrupted a lot too...stopped when I stopped mounting it as USB storage and using bluetooth and wifi to transfer files. Something with this phone doesn't unmount cleanly for some people.

I actually did do exactly that, as I know the boot image isn't installed with the ROM. Learned to do it when I installed Axiom...
Anyway, I still got stuck in a boot loop... But I'll Try it again. Any way to build a RUU ?

Thanx for the help with the Data... Will give it a Try ! I'm busy downloading The Venom ROM now.
But for some reason It's EXTREMELY slow. Like 10Kb/s... It's quite bad. I've tried with different service
providers (we use like three between our family). Any thoughts ?

I know its an old thread BUT
The OP didn't get an answer to his question and i would like to hear members thought on the subject anyway
Is it possible to make a RUU from any given ROM
Im just surprised that its not been developed on here before now
On my travels i found this
http://www.htcsensationforum.com/htc-sensation-rooting/how-to-extract-rom-zip-from-ruu/
Now if it possible to extract the rom from the ruu why not the reverse ?

You can turn Mustang into Pinto, but you can not turn Pinto into Mustang. Any downloaded rom have 3 files in it - Meta, System and boot.img. RUU have firmware( in addition ) and is in exe format. Just can not be done from back up rom. The easy way would be to download the RUU.
I know that it is "pain in the butt", but that way, you will get your phone back to "normal".

Dead right its a pain especially when HTC release the RUUs when and if they choose to...just how many members do you searching around for RUUs that have not been released...and were talking phones that are 8 months or in some instances older

Desire s stuck after 2.3.5 update

i tried to update via phone (after the notification), but after green bar was full, my phone rebooted and stuck in white screen with htc logo... if i try to enter in recovery i see this
h*tp://i39.tinypic.com/xdxnc5.jpg
it seems to be s-off (i bought it used) ...what have i to do for make it work again??
tnx.. and sorry for my bad english
same problem here, help is needed!
A golden rule: never update OTA on a modified device (custom ROM even modified Stock one, custom Recovery, Revolutionary hboot!, etc.)
How to fix:
do not pull battery!
flash a custom recovery (e.g. 4EXT) with the fastboot command (search for a how-to)
reboot to recovery, wipe all partitions and install custom ROM
Ok, to late with the battery, have already pulled that one out!
I also have S-Off on my phone, really dont understand the how to fix a recovery??
And is it really neccessary to flash a new ROM for this?
An official release that screwes the phones up?
I think the general issue is that an 'Official' OTA upgrade should not screw up your phone - enough testing by HTC should make sure of that.
Hoever, if you have modified your phone (e.g. by rooting it, installing custom recovery etc) then you can not expect to blame HTC when their upgrade doesn't work as expected. They can't be held responsible for problems caused by modifications you make to the phone.
But all I have done is S-Off, I have not installed another ROM or anything else?
So the update should work I really think!
Can I install a custom recovery without have to be able to start the phone?

The OTA flashes a new hboot also.
If you S-OFFed with Revolutionary your hboot has to be version 6.98.000x. This hboot has a protection and cannot be overwritten. This is the point where the update process is interrupted. The result is a bootloop, because the new system is incomplete.
If you can boot to bootloader (hboot) you should be able to flash a custom recovery with the fastboot command (in the 4EXT Recovery thread there is an attachement - a zip file that contains recovery.img). Extract the archive and flash it with this command from cmd (there is a guide how to make fastboot working in my signature):
Code:
fastboot flash recovery {path to file on your PC}/recovery.img
If this works reboot to recovery, wipe all partitions and flash a custom ROM. Then your phone should be working again.
Then if you want the OTA flash a 0.98.2000 hboot, then use the 1.47.401.4 RUU (if you are using European unbranded) or the corresponding for your brand/region to return back to complete Stock and S-ON. Then you will be prompted to update and you will have the latest OTA on your device
Okay, I have now fixed the 4EXT Recovery and it is working!
Do I have to put a new ROM on the SD-card or is there another way to install a ROM (from cmd with the ROM on the computer etc?)
I dont have an adapter to the SD-card, but maybe I can put the ROM on the sdcard with a command in cmd aswell?
What ROM do you recommend to use? (sense, no sense doesnt matter)
Edit: I did a backup as well, thinking that I should do that...
Can you link to zip file you used for recovery i have exactly same issue and same software versions as you have.
@ Mooler. First of follow the guide that was posted here regarding the adb-drivers.
After that download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=631186&d=1308596026
Then install that one as described with the cmd-command.
After that just put a custom ROM or a shipped ROM on the SD-card, wipe data/cache and install the ROM you want. That solved the problem for me!
Good Luck and thanks for the help I got here! Xda always delivers
Damn this phone! After hours of fixing with this problem!
I managed great, installed new kernels, radios, ROMs etc. And the first thing I did was to drop it on the floor so the whole damn display cracked!
Thanks for both of you.
I managed to restore the phone quickly after i got the correct recovery file. 30 mins and custom ROM was up and running. Good bye official update.

[Q] [URGENT!] Bootlooping due to flash wrong PG58IMG

Hi all,
I have a problem with my Sensation due to my own fault.
I want to flash ARHD ICS rom to my phone, and I started with rooting my Sensation. I followed all instruction til installing the Recovery (PG58IMG).
I downloaded two versions of PG58IMG (one for ICS and one for the other), but I copied the firmware for ICS version to my SD card and already installed it. Now, my phone already S-off but cannot reboot into homescreen. It keeps rebooting it self in white hTC screen (after I installed the ICS firmware).
I don't know how to fix. I tried to read the troubleshoot in the post but I still cannot fix it. Does anyone have a solution??
Thanks in advance

If I understand you correctly you flashed the firmware upgrade BEFORE you flashed the new ICS rom? If so you'll need to get your sdcard card out (and get your computer to read it) so you can rename the PG85img on your sdcard so you can get back into recovery so you can flash the new ICS rom.

Yes, I flashed the upgraded firmware before not only I flashed ICS rom, but also I get rooted. Now, I can't flash any rom as well as su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip or su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip.
It still keep bootlooping. I tried to flash the other firmware, but it showed 'CID incorrect'. I don't know how to fix now
Did you check MD5 Sums before you flashed the ROM because it sounds like a bad download so re-download the ROM and reflash

I did check MD5 sums for all files I downloaded and it is corrected.
Now, I'm curious that whether it is possible to flash the upgraded firmware before being rooted.
And of course you need to be using the right version of the firmware for the rom you want to flash. Mike's latest uses 3.24 per here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
I don't know if you can get into fastboot or not, but you should be able to check the CID of your phone there, and download the right firmware for your phone. If your phone is carrier independent (i.e. didn't get on contract) then the HTC__xxx variety should be good.

Thank you so much for your link. I can boot my Sensation into the homescreen now. For my problem, I have to download and flash the older version (3.17) to fix it.
Thanks all of you for your reply again.
+1 for me, solve with a new download .
Just flash the Mod, the bootloop is normal.
I got the same problem, before i flashed Revolution Rom i used that radio package. After the radio package flash, my phone wass stuck in a bootloop.
I took the memory card out en removed the zip file en flashed the revolution rom. After that my phone started normal.
SOrry for the bad enlgish.
Good luck mate.
hey, guys i just had the same problem, kinda. lol
anyways my phone is rooted, s-off and superCID
when i went to install the new ics rom i did everything this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
said to do and when the new root booted up for the first time, it would go up to the beats audio logo,( the ics rom with beats audio (xe)) then like restart back to the htc startup logo, then beats again then htc again, it just kept doing this..??
so i just deleated everything and restored back to origional backup rom.
so what did i do wrong?
a bad download link/file? can u give me a good one?
thanks, any help is greatly appreciated as iam totally lost right now...
edit:
also do i even need this file (PG58IMG.zip.) to flash the ics rom if my phone is superCID ??? iam confused on that part.
nevermind, figured it out and got it work! the new ics is pretty sweet!!
thanks for everything- towards all the developers and testers on here
Cool. The answer is yes of course. The firmware file contains a specific radio / hboot / etc version. The ROM you download and install is dependent on certain combinations of the firmware versions you have. The super cid just allows you to flash any of the firmwares available here... Otherwise you have to find the specific one for your region and/or carrier.
Also, don't forget you can use an adb logcat while your phone is booting to see if you can diagnose any boot-looping issues. Just run that command on your PC with your phone attached via USB cable

To do so,
1. Download the correct firmware version ( PG58IMG.zip V3.24 ) and copy it to the root of your SDCARD.
Be 200% sure that the downloaded zip file is not corrupted. ( Check the MD5 checksum after you download)
2. Pull Back the battery and wait for a minute.
3. Put the battery and press POWER+VOLUME Down Key together.
4. Your phone will detect the firmware.
5. Follow the screen and complete the flashing.
6. Download the ICS based ROM of your favor.
7. Boot into recovery and flash your rom.

No you didn't do everything the thread said to do because you're stuck in a bootloop. And yes, you must have correct firmware to run any ICS ROM.
1. SuperCID.
2. Load correct firmware for ROM version you wish to flash (there are 3 different firmwares, 3.06, 3.12 and 3.24. Make sure you've got the right one.
Put PG58IMG.zip on the root of your damn SD card.
Put the ROM you want on the root of your damn SD card.
Put a wipe or superwipe script on the root of your damn SD card.
So far it's easy, no?
Boot to bootloader, select FASTBOOT, select yes to update.
Watch the phone. You should see it flash some partitions, reboot itself, then flash the radio and some other crap.
When done you should be at correct HBOOT and radio.
Now, pull the battery. Pull the SD card.
Insert the battery. Start the phone with power + Volume down.
Move cursor to recovery.
Insert SD card and select recovery.
Flash the wipe script, flash the ROM.
Now if you did everything exactly like this, you will boot to normal phone in about 10 minutes or so.
This has been spelled out 50 times in 50 threads, including threads devoted to nothing but this procedure.
Your phone is a machine. It can only do what you tell it to do. If you screw up, it's screwed up. If you do everything exactly right, in the right order, carefully checking each step, your phone will behave.
Try again.
Do it right. Do it carefully.

[Q] HTC Boot Loop and no signal using recovery

Hello All,
I will start this thread with the obligatory "Im new to rooting...." sentence but over the last 2 or so weeks have been doing my research between multiple sites (including this one), getting frustrated at how many "How to...but before you do" guides there are out there adn you tube videos but have finally managed to perm root and S-Off my UK Vodafone HTC Sensation.
I have flashed clockwork recovery without a hitch and managed to download the Cynaogen Rom without to much difficulty.
The problem:
While looking for overclocking ROMs, decided that the Virtuous Sensation ROM might be the one for me.
While doing further research, I discovered that I would need to flash the new PG58IMG.zip Firmware before the ROM would work. To do this, I would potentially be required to SuperCID, which I also did.
SuperCID complete and Firmeware flashed (and then removed from the SD card) I wiped the phone (several times following instructions on this site) and then installed the Virtuous ROM.
Now I get stuck on boot loop with the blue "V" showing for a about a second and then restarting.
Following some further internet checking, I found it may be a bad download of the ROM so downloaded again but the same thing happened. I also downloaded a different Virtuous ROM to confirm it was the Virtuous Sensation ROM that was corrupt but the other ROM got stuck on boot loop, albeit, the blue "V" now shoed for about 5 seconds.
I decided to load a recovery and revert back to the Cynaogen ROM except......sometimes its stuck on boot loop and other times it loads but I have no network coverage.
I have two questions:
Why did the new Virtuous ROM not work with the recommended firmware?
and
How can I restore my phone? I am guessing this problem may be the new firmware but I have read that this one works with Gingerbread and ICS?
Any help would be appreciated...preferably in a non "PHD in IT required" way.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
mostly it might be because of Firmware
what firmware you installed (my guess is 3.24 as you said works for both ICS and GB )
but i suggest you to use 3.33 firmware for ICS or above roms and 1.17 For GB roms
here is the firmware thread
OK, just tried flashing the ICS firmware (thanks for reply) from the link you posted, wiped the phone, cache etc and reinstalled ROM.
I get stuck on boot loop but the blue "v" does load for a little longer now.
From doing some more reading I have seen people saying to check MD5 match. Would someone mind explaining what ths is and how to do it?
OK, ignore the MD5 thing, i searched and found and its a match for all downloads.
ROM is an MD5 match also.
Tried all firmware and still stuck on boot loop.....
One thing I have noticed is that when I load usig the vol down + power, it sates that the 58IMG is "no image or wrong image"....could this be anything to do with it?

That's generic bootloader function... So its common.. The searching for PG58IMG thing...
Now the best and most effective way is to first cleanup everything usig ruu.. Search for "ruu guide and info" thread by kgs1992 in sensation general section... Use that.. Find the proper ruu and flash it.. Check whether the stock rom(ruu) is flashing or not..If flashing then flash custom recovery and flash your custom rom again
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
Question
I have checked through a few forums and just want to clarify something before I go down the RUU route:
Will flashing the RUU to stock mean I lose S-Off or perm root? You say I will have to flash a custom recovery image again so I guess that means flashing clockworkmod through HBoot but will I then be expected to flash further firmware?
Thanks, Ill give the RUU thing a go.
I tried all the firmware with te Virtuous ROM and nothing worked but then one of the bottom firmware donloads (3.24 I think, cant remember know following multiple downloads) and booted the recovery.
Now I have signal again!
Thanks for advice, I will try the RUU thing....
Cheers

RUU means everything to stock except SOFF ..so you would lose custom recovery, perm root .but the best part is as you still have SOFF ..you can just flash a custom recovery again ..and flash su zip for perm root again ..done voila
and SOFF means ..yes you can flash any firmware
Thanks for all you help mate, in the end i found Cyanogen 10 ROM which does everything I want so followed all instructions and works fine now.
Thanks again for being patient with a nub......much appreciated!:laugh::laugh::laugh:

[Q] Problem with booting roms htc amaze 4g

Hey Guys,
I have a rooted htc amaze 4g i rooted, s-on with Hasoon2000 tool. I currently have the clockworkmod recovery installed but have also installed team wins recovery and 4ext recovery in the past trying to figure out my problem but to no avail. Im currently running the newest version stock ruu for tmobile. I have been having the issue of getting my phone to boot my roms properly and cant figure out why. I have installed CM10 rom and The viper rom. for the amaze and both roms do the same thing. During flashing of the zip files in recovery everything seems to work fine with both roms and install properly. Once installed and i go to reboot the phone, it will get stuck on the boot screen of whichever rom I installed and never actually boots the phone fully. Im at a loss and have many hours trying to get the roms to boot but i can not figure out why both roms always get stuck on boot screen. The viper rom will flash my capacitative buttons on the bottom and vibrate periodically but still wont get past the boot screen, Sorry if i left out any information out or if im making a newbie mistake (which im hoping for). I have an understanding of things but im no expert by any means, just let me know if you need to know more.
Thanks!

so yeah that's a easy fix, your gonna want to take a file out of the Rom (CM10.zip) its going to be called Boot.img and your going to put on your SD card of the phone along with the ROM and the preferred gapps if you want one. your going to need to flash these in this order
Boot.img >CM10.zip >Gapps! if you were to get s-off you don't need to do this you can flash stuff normally.

Do I take the original rom that i extracted the files from, compress the boot img, then compress the remaining files back into the cm10.zip minus the boot and flash in order? Or do i just extract the boot img out of cm10.zip and compress it to zip and flash, then do the same flash with an unaltered version of cm10.zip in proper order?

No no no no your making it hard on yourself bro, zips are a little like folders but when you drag stuff out of it, it copys the file instead of moving it, not all flashes have to be .zip types like I said before go into the cm10.zip with winrar or 7zip and take out boot.img flash the boot.IMG and then the ROM followed by the gapps after, its a good question to ask, if I knew was much as I know about winrar before started flashing roms I would have asked the same thing

you can use any custom recovery with S-on you just need to take out the boot.img for every rom you want to flash, if you dont want to do this every time you need to get S-off, i think you can flash Sense Roms with s-on without the boot.img
(oh and sorry about not noticing that you have s-on in your first post, i was sort of skimming!)

I'm sorry I didn't realize that my post didn't post all the way. I did get teamvenom 1.7.2.3 installed properly once the faux kernel installed like it should during aroma installer and its runnin good. I do like it but would like to try a few more roms for sure before I decide. I did try and do exactly what you said with extractin the boot.img out of cm10 and flashing them seperately with the boot.img flashed 1st then cm10zip second and I am still having the same problem. The HTC screen pops up first then the cryanogenmod boot screen and it gets stuck there. I used to have the same problem the tv 1.7.2.1 andd I then got the updated 1.7.2.3 version which fixxed the faux kernel flashing issue and after that it installed properly. But I still get the same problem with cm10. Sorry if i'm a pest just want me a jellybean Rom! Lol

hmmm i do not know what todo at this point, i think you wanna take it to the official forms for the device, sorry mate.
Edit: maybe try a Sense rom first? also what version of CWM did you have before? only X.x.x is important to know.

[Q] Htc One X Unique problem

So as a n00b, I posted in the wrong forum earlier, lol
Anyways , long story short, htc one x evita, unlocked bootloader, tampered, rooted, will not flash past htc splash screen, when I try to restore, it does nothing, when going into folders there is NOTHING there, so random, I did clear my caches as instructed, maybe I am n00bish and deleted the wrong things, I can read the phone in adb, will go into teamwin screen,
REgardless, If I can get this fixed, I will not be messing with it again, lol(as all noobs say)
IS there anything I can do at this point before I throw my hands in the air and throw my phone at a wall?
Far from unique. It's possible that you've accidentally wiped the sd at some point, or did you possibly do a factory reset from the bootloader? Why haven't you just copied a ROM to the device to flash?

HI, I may have wiped the sd, let's say sure to this..lol..
I have tried to copy a rom, I had Viper somewhat load, then it flashes back to htc splash, then to twrp,
Any insite to one that may possibly work?(the others will not load at all, they all fail install)
I need a bit more background on the device, please post your bootloader details (the first five lines). What TWRP version are you using? What had you done to the device directly before encountering this problem?
When you say you had Viper somewhat load what do you mean? Did it boot into the ROM at all? Or did it only boot as far as the Viper boot animation? Or did it only make it as far as the HTC splash screen?
I can't really say what's going to work until we figure out exactly what's wrong. Make sure you answer all the above questions with as much relevant detail as possible and we'll see if we can sort it out.

First off, thank you for your prompt replies
Venom loaded splash screen, then reboot to htc splash with the red developer on the bottom
twrp is the newest one
first 5 lines are you meaning?

*** UNLOCKED ****
Evita put ship s-on rl
hboot-2.14.0000

??
Well I tried to load the stock RUU from rogers, (ota one)
then after rooting, unlocking bootloader, I tried to load a custom rom(slimkat IIRC)
then IT shut down, I left it for the night, and then nothing, so I tried to install slimkat again, nothing, so I tried venom, and I had the splash screen for the rom, now I am basically back at square one, nothing lol
Yes those are the bootloader details I needed. When you say the latest TWRP I'm assuming you mean 2.6.3.0? There are two versions of 2.6.3.0, the official version and the modified version.
Official version
Can flash any ROM except 4.4 ROMs. If you're using this one it is why SlimKat (plus any other 4.4 ROM) is failing to install.
Modified version
This is required to flash 4.4 ROMs. It does work on some pre 4.4 ROMs but it doesn't on others.
The most common cause for your current situation to happen is that you've forgotten to flash the boot.img with fastboot. Your phone is s-on, this means that the boot.img is unable to be flashed during the recovery install due to security restrictions on hboots equal to or greater than 1.14. So, make sure you're using the correct recovery for the ROM you want to flash (official 2.6.3.0 for Viper, modified 2.6.3.0 for 4.4 ROMs), and make sure you flash the boot.img with fastboot. I have detailed instructions on how to flash a boot.img in my How-To Guide For Beginners thread, link in my signature.
Do that and report back with how you go.

Thank you so very much, once again with the quick replies and the "dumming" it down for me,
I will try in a little bit, to be honest, im not sure what twrp it is, I know its 2.3.6.0, it was the newest one,
in your instructions is there a way to boot just back to stock rom as well?(my pc is horrible, if I load more then one page it dies off lol) I will try this when I get home in a little bit herre.
I can almost positively say you're on the official version of TWRP, you'd need to go out of your way to find the modified one usually. With your phone in its current state you can't use an RUU to go back to stock. The latest Rogers RUU is older than your current firmware and you can't run an older RUU while s-on. If you made a TWRP backup of your stock ROM before wiping you could restore that backup though.
Your best and easiest option right now is to just flash a ROM. Once you've gotten a custom ROM booted up my guess is you won't want to go back to stock
Once you've gotten a ROM booted you can get s-off on your device which will make life a lot easier for you. It means no more flashing a boot.img, you'll be able to flash radios, you can run any Evita RUU (forwards or backwards, and from any carrier), and more benefits. But for now just concentrate on getting the ROM booting.
I'm assuming you have adb/fastboot installed on your PC already? If not you'll need to do that first, Google search "minimal adb and fastboot", the first result should take you to a thread that can get it done with very little effort.

Yes I have a basic Adb/fastboot setup already, is there a particular rom you recommend?(I will trust your best judgement here) I am home now, I will try and let you know
Thank you again
Asking for a ROM recommendation isn't allowed on XDA so I can't answer that question, here's why. To say one ROM is better is to infer that the others are inferior in some way. This is disrespectful to the devs who spend their spare time bringing us these awesome ROMs free of charge.
Each user has different tastes anyway. Some people like Sense ROMs, some like aosp ROMs. Personally I'm an aosp guy, aosp ROMs are generally a bit snappier, plus you can run the latest version of Android (Sense ROMs are limited to 4.2.2 for our device). I'd suggest having a look at the ROMs on offer, check out their features and pick one to flash. If you don't end up liking it you can always just flash another, and that's half the fun.
As a side note, getting s-off via Rumrunner s-off seems to work better on Sense ROMs. I know someone very recently got s-off while on the Kickdroid ROM so if you do want to get s-off I'd suggest flashing that ROM purely for the s-off process. You might like it and want to stay on it, if not just flash away.

Fastboot,
Small update I did manage to get a rootbox rom to load, but its not stable by anymeans...Ugh super frustrated with it
Are you wiping in TWRP before flashing? It's very important to wipe system/factory reset/cache/dalvik cache before installing a ROM. Just never do a factory reset in the bootloader, that'll corrupt your sd card.

Yes to wiping before flashing in TWRP just those ones mentioned, (if you do sd you loose your flash right?), anyways the rom I flashed yesterday was super unstable, just trying a few diff. ones out and trying to find one that will continue to stay working lol!! Your tutorial in your signature is very helpful
thank you so much for all your help, and patience
Yeah you don't want to wipe sd card/internal storage or you'll lose all of your personal data like images, music, ROM zips, backups.

On a side note, I got Venom up and running and WOW!!!
once again, a super thank you for your patience and help all along Timmaaa,
I'm not sure what you're talking about, is that after booting into the ROM? Can you show me a screenshot?
