So I have had since day one of getting my S3 considerably less of a cell signal than my droids in the past (zero data issues, stock, un rooted, rooted, multi-rommed, bad signal). Trouble shot everything I could think of, finally had vzw send me a new device. Just got the new phone, popped in sim, set up, same thing, bad cell signal (not the sim, did that twice). In the Boston area, it's not a network thing, it's the device.
Now, I have a small dent on my phone, do I go through the effort to return to stock and send back my original device to not have a dent anymore and keep the "new" refurbished phone? Or keep my already customized original NEW phone?
This is a tough one, I hate the dent, but like knowing I have a brand new device.
Next thing, I assume at this point that the S3 just does not get as good reception as other phones. Any mods that can help? Love this phone so much that I will deal with a bad signal, but would rather not.
Please offer some valid, valuable input on what I should do. Have 4 days to send one of these back.
Thanks

Hey i got a question, so they replaced your first phone because you got bad signal? Like free of charge they swapped it ?
Yes, as warranty issue. I currently have my original device and the refurbished replacement in my hands. Have to return one of them in 4 days

Why would you go back to the original one, the replacement has a dent on it, not good and still issue. You should call support and get another one. Just tell them the replacement has a dent on it. The S3 has weak signal (2-3 bars where I live and I owned 3 of them), but never had call or connectivity issue. So I would ask for another one.
No, my original has a dent on it from when I dropped it, but it is a new phone. Replacement is cosmetically new, but a refurbished phone. Both have same basic signal issue, not as good as my droids in the past.

i got mine about a week ago, i wonder if they would replace mine (got a crack in it) if i complained about bad reception in my house, because i only get 1 bar here. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/386262_10151093476528557_832449593_n.jpg

Ok got you, when you said signal issue, do you have drop calls or just low signal bar? if you have drop calls then I would try another one and if problem stills exist then you should get another brand. S3 does have low signal compared to other droid phones...or maybe the iphone 5?
The signal strength will be a little weak. The real question is does it drop calls or is the call quality really bad (ex..voice cutting out). Try your phone in different areas and if you have none of those issues then your phone is normal.

I'll forget the implication that an iPhone would be even close to a viable replacement for my S3!
But no, not willing to change to a different device. There are dropped calls in "bad areas" that my droid would not drop in, but I can live with it. Hoping for some jacked up fix that could possibly be recommended.
And, keep original new dented device, or return to stock and send back in favor of replacement refurbished device.... Tough one!

Personally I would return your original and start over with the replacement. Put a case on it. And wait for a signal fix from Samsung.
My friend got a replacement because the vibrator died on his first one. He is now in a replacement vicious cycle and is on #7 right now Each of them have had major issues like extreme overheating etc. His newest one won't connect to wifi. So just keep that in mind, once you get in the replacement cycle you will be getting phones that have been "repaired" for other potentially worse things.
With any samsung CDMA phone you can expect to drop more calls and have a worse signal than you would on an HTC or Moto device by a decent margin.

This. Also remember that the bars are NOT universal you would have to look at the dBm. From what I've read you need to use the same app on both phones in order to get a correct reading since all of the manufacturer seem to report the signal strength in various ways.
This may or may not help..
I have found that the VRLF2 baseband works better on my phone than the lastest G1 baseband. Worth a shot to try it if you haven't.
Of course the basebands can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313
That's the stuff I'm interested in. Changing baseband version, radio, etc. But I know nothing about it. I'll start researching your link.
I think I'll be sending the refurbished one back, I'll just be paranoid if things stop working. My device now is mint except for the signal.

I personally would keep the original depending on how bad the reception is... Is it just moderately below what you are used to or significantly? The samsung devices have crappy radios period. Considering they now are running the show far as top of the line android they may pay attention and start implementing better radios for our GSIII.
If it is just moderately lower than normal, I would keep the original(youre not gonna get any better with a replacement) and put a case on it that hides the dent. There ARE three different radios you can flash to see if maybe one works better for your area. Check this MODEM THREAD out and try the different radios... do it for a day on each one at least to see if one is better for you and your area than the other. Sometimes ROMs do affect your reception also. I personally think that running a stock TouchWiz ROM gives me a little better 4g signal than running a AOSP ROM but it's such a small difference I'm willing to sacrifice it for the other benefits of AOSP.
At this point, I can't agree enough. I think the key element that verizon has failed to point out to me is that Samsung's do not compare to other devices for reception. I kept getting false hopes that this was a problem that could be fixed, and it cannot. I did just try another radio with no prevail, but again, the signal is functional, just not as good as my droids in the past. I have not noticed any significant changes between rom's though, but I think that's good. Definitely keeping my original, why take a refurb if it offers no functional value other than not having a dent!

That's with some ROMs that for whatever reason default to having the LTE unchecked.
i think this signal issue gets blown out of proportion...i never drop calls on my s3 and signal is great. i performed a side by side comparison against my mother in-law's razr, her device pulled -102db, my s3 pulled -107db...also at that signal i pull 12-14mb/s LTE.

Ok so my girlfriend was a big iPhone fangirl but after a year of harassing her and her seeing what i can do with mine she decided to give it a try. After a while debating different screen size, shape etc she decided on nexus s in white. Of course, finding a decent nexus s for ATT in white was a pain but I eventually found a pristine one and jumped on it
I had her try out a few different roms, and she complained to no end that her battery sucked, things crashed etc. It was like she was finding reasons not to like it.
Finally got it stable on bugless beast, found a keyboard she like and all seemed well except...
The phone doesn't get service at her job where the iPhone did. As a result I think that's what's killing the battery cause when she isn't there it seems ok. It just keeps searching for signal. About everything else I was able to fix but i guess its pretty reasonable that she expects it to work where her last phone did, and so far i can't do much about it. Admittedly the reception does suck. It's consistently about 2 bars and 10+ DBM lower than my galaxy s2 both on ATT.
Does anyone have a decent remedy for this? She's back to the ifail and I'm going to have to eat my losses trying to sell a phone a paid too much for cause she had to have it immediately
Tthanks in advance
flash a different radio perhaps?
Hmm i remember doing that for my inspire a few times, assuming it's similar where certain ones seem better in certain regions does anyone have recommendations for anything that works well in the NY area or does it not matter? Flash them through hboot on here?
Thanks
The radio will make things much better. I have ATT and I have been using the KB3 radio which seems to work very well.
Not sure about ny, just be careful and flash the correct radio for the 9020a.

Is anyone else using their infuse with an ATT Microcell? If so what kind of issues are you having if any. I cannot run any modem besides the two stock Froyo modems.... Any other modems cause several issues. One issue is that sms and mms messages fail at a rate of around 65% . They simply dont send...With or Without WIFI on ..Same result. Another issue is that the sound quality is deminished to an unusable level.
I have seen several other posts about the MIcrocell but none of them have produced a good result. I would love to someday be able to run a custom ROM...But if the trade is the aformentioned issues, it isnt worth it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
I use a Microcell and I do not have any problems. I use Google Voice for texting so I have no experience with messaging through the carrier.

So ... I thought I would be an informed man if I went over to the Galaxy Note forum and post my Microcell question. I asked if anyone was having the issues that my fellow Infuse owners are experiencing with their Microcell and the G-Note.
After not getting a response and over 50 people had looked at the thread ... someone finally responded. I will some up what they said.
The ATT version isn't out yet. No one can answer this question. I immediately felt noobish and dumb.
So after my posts here about the Microcell ... I still have no fix. And after my post over at the g-note o feel stupid. No winning for me in either case. Mom and Dad both denied my requests.
On a separate note: I went my the ATT store in Marion IL. I asked the salesman when they would have a G-Note in stock... he replied " oh! You mean the Phablet ?" . I almost threw up. Is anyone actually using that term? I see the logic in the term but just saying it out loud makes that beast of a phone sound like wuss that gets picked last when choosing last for a kick ball game!
Way to wuss it up ATT.

I have had an Infuse since June and relied on a M-Cell until recently. In as short of an answer as possible the M-Cell does not work well with 4G phones especially the Infuse. SMS are sent over data signals and that is where the bottleneck is. Get used to it, my texts would fail 50-80 percent of the time and I lost about half of my calls in under 15 minutes.
FYI: I called AT&T and demanded a refund for the M-Cell as it was causing my reception issues, after the unhook my phone is tolerable though not perfect. I received a $165 credit on my bill and then sold the M-Cell on ebay.

I am very happy that you have signal without your mcell. I however have no choice. We have 3 4g phones and only the infuse has this issue. The other disturbing fact is that I don't have the issue with Froyo. By deduction I am left to assume that the issue is the radio.

I have microcell at my home, i got from ATT for free when I have signal issue with my iPhone. After getting infuse, i didnt had any issues in terms of data. I never use SMS so i dont know about it.
But when I use micro cell, my batter drains too fast. so now i stopped using microcell, and now I have better signal in my home.

I had the same issues with stock Froyo, Infused 2.2.3, and stock GB, this of course does not disprove your theory as there are different modems. I just saw a lack of usability across 3 builds and gave up on the gadget and got my money back.
What I don't get is that my phone always showed 5 bars, so I infer the gremlin is not the radio, but some failure between the devices to handshake properly and this borks up the whole affair. Who knows though your theory is as valid as mine.
Just my $.02
I had this same issue when I had my infuse. It drove me bonkers so I finally sold the infuse and bought the sgs2 international version. It works perfectly with the M-Cell so maybe the note will too. Hope that's at least a little help.
Got microcell free also have horrible battery drain, have to resend sms atleast 10 times for it to go out, same with inbound SMS most of the time won't get them until I walk outside and disconnect from mcell then 5 or 6 will sms will come in at once, while my girls iPhone 4 sends/recieves texts fine over mcell

I have had this phone since it came out and I love it, I have had no issues at all. Every phone comes out has some bad apples (pun intended). but this phone is a great phone in my opinion. I hope the third one will change your opinion on the phone cause it has treated me well. As a final note I have used odin and cwm and all kinds of different roms, kernels, updates, themes, and everything with no problems
Every problem I have had with this phone has been fixed by software updates except for the weak signal reception, but i guess that is what you get when you buy Samsung.

I've enjoyed the phone except for one problem. I'm calling Verizon tonight to maybe get a replacement. On more then half of long phone calls that are over ten minutes, the phone makes a clicking noise and then the other person can't here me anymore. Happens daily.
I'm considering burning my upgrade for the Nexus. If only the One X was coming to Verizon, or anything quad core for that matter.

I think the key statement of the Op is "different phone". I too am on the 4th CLN charge for the clicking and popping on calls lasting more than 10 minutes. The irony is my current phone was perfect until the FP1 update, then the clicks started happening again. I tried to get verizon to send me a different device but was told the manufacturer has only approved them to send CLN phones out. When I asked what verizon's policy was, all I got was silence. Apparently they don't care that I spend $2200 per year for a family plan that a $200 phone can ruin. They aren't making money on handsets, it's all in the service.
End rant.

Love my charge
I've had two charges, both refurbs since they offered it to me after dealing with a lot of annoying problems with my fascinate. The first one was great, had a bit of a static issue on phone calls but easily dealable, but my usb controller crapped out after about three months so I could no longer flash anything through odin (which is simply unacceptable to me). VZ sent me a replacement and after customizing it and getting the latest software I have not had a single problem since, no static issues on calls, and ridiculously good reception even in my bunker of a house. Hands down my favorite phone I've ever owned.
Static, static, and more static. Even with the last update. I can deal with it, because it's my work phone, and almost always use bluetooth.
When I talk on the phone with my gf (the only time I talk with anybody for more than 5 minutes), she says she hears the clicking and then I disappear. I can hear her, but she can't hear me. It's been happening as long as I can remember, so I went back to stock and took all the updates. Not rooted at the moment, and if the call problem happens one more time I'm buying the Nexus.
As long as you have the warranty on your phone you can get as many refurbs as you like. Or you can request for a new phone from Verizon if your tired of having problems out of your phone. I started with a Driod 2. From there: Droid X, iPhone 4 ( black 8gb), Droid X2, LG Revolution, Droid Bionic, Droid Charge, Samsung Stratosphere, then funny enough back to the Droid Charge. This is all the phones they have sent me during my two year contract which ends this September. So this comes to show that if you have an issue with your phone verizon as all about customer satisfaction. So if your unhappy with your phone just complain. They will set things straight. And in case anybody is wondering I just like to play and mod different phones. Was really regretting getting rid of the iPhone 4 but Tweaked v2.0 rom by dwitherell has really made me happy to be a Charge owner. The rom is super stable and super quick. No lockups or lag. And the theme is just beautiful.

I’ve had my One S for 4 weeks now and every week brings a different problem plus it would appear to be worse since the 4.0.4 update.

4. Complete loss of network signal after long period of shut down.
5. Aeroplane mode locked the phone completely requiring a reboot.

I have the loss of signal issue, mostly indoors. Never had that issue with my other phones. It is worrying me cause I just purchased this phone on a new contract and only have about 5 more days to decide if i want to keep them or not? With this issue and seeing all the terrible issues in the custom ROM's I am afraid I will hate this phone compared to my GNex. I understand Jellybean has not been officially released yet so there will be issues but is there any ICS ROM's that run without issues? My past experience with less popular phones is we can never get a truly great daily driver. Any reassurance will be greatly appreciated!

Response from HTC UK.
"For further testing, we would ask you to reset the phone without the SIM card in the phone(Hard resetting the phone will delete all data on the phone memory). Once the phone has completed the reset, test the phone with no Gmail or 3rd party applications on the phone. This will then confirm whether it is the phone or 3rd party software.
I am confident that this will resolve your query, in the unlikely event that this does not please call or instant chat to one of our Technical Support Agents who will be waiting to guide you through step by step. Our Contact Details can be found at www.htc.com/uk/contact"
no Gmail!!! I thought this was stock???

It is stock, some of these "agents" know less than a squirrel would, on their own software especially!

I'm having signal issues as well.
I got this phone last Thursday as a replacement to my Galaxy S2.
So far i'm getting less reception in my house than my S2 had.
Also, when I'm at work, it goes from Full 4G service, to NO bars, and then to 2G, and back to Full 4g. WTF?

Exactly the issue I am having on my new one s. Only have a few days to decide whether I want to keep it or not. It's not looking like a keeper! Never had the complete signal drops showing an X before. Texts keep getting denied til the service comes back.

I hear ya.
It's a shame because I REALLY like this phone. Feels great in the hand, build quality is fantastic, and overall it's super smooth and fast.
I hate to give it up, but I can't have signal issues like this at home. Even the wifi calling has had a couple issues so far.
I need my phone to work, plain and simple.
Thinking I might go with the Galaxy S3. Probably the only phone that will make me not miss this one so much.

I'm quite sure if you went with the Galaxy Nexus you wouldn't miss this phone either.
I suppose you have fought with your service provider just like I am right? HTC is telling me to try a different back cover and/or do a factory reset. they claim they are not hearing any issues like this with this phone. I kind of figured I would have issues because Cincinnati Bell does not get the best phones, I had major issues with their XT720. I should have known better. This is why I just bought the GNex from Google, I was gonna avoid signing a new contract then CBW offered me such a great deal on 5 new phones if I resigned so i went with it.
I just tested calls with my galaxy nexus and the HTC one S by calling each other and I got to say call quality with the HTC is much better. Louder and more clear. But I am running a sound volume tweak for my Gnex and it doesn't prove to be louder with in call volume. I will have to get rid of that tweak and see the difference

Problem is that I don't want to spend the money on the Nexus. I got the One S as a warranty replacement, so I'm not spending any money. I'd have to shell out cash to get the Nexus.

I reflashed my ROM on my GNex and now the sound quality for both are exactly the same.

Well if it is a new warranty replacement it comes with a new 12month warranty, sell the one S to earn the money for the GNex. I have both and personally I like the GNex better. So many ROM's and kernels to choose from and none of the issues with the Gnex that i see here with the One S. Besides, by the time the One S get's jellbean, Gnex will be getting Key Lime Pie!
I noticed something else today...
If I look closely at my screen, there seems to be some banding going on, as if there is radio intereference with the screen's signal. Like what happened on old tv's when the signal wasn't coming in perfectly clear.
Anyone else experiencing this???
So my and my girlfriend switched both from Droid X's back in September, with that said we never had any issue with signal at our house(all ways had full bars 3G). Soon as i came home with my S3 i noticed that both of our phones had poor signal strength 3G 1 bar or 1x. I called verizon tech support they had no idea what was going on and were wanting to replace my phone, saying my phone was the issue. However my Girlfriends S3 was having the same problem now i don't think that both phones are defective and the tech rep was wanted to replace my phone with w refurbished one which i just bought this one brand spanking new. So i was wondering am i the only one with signal issues? And my other questions are .... Is it hardware or a software (radio) issue? Will there be a fix / Update?
It's just Samsung doesn't have good radios.
There's suppose you be an vrlhd update that suppose to help with signal and data

So there is no hope to get a new radio update at all?

Theres a update coming soon that'll improve the signal issues with the S3. Its not JB update.
Good at least some hope for my S3.

I got the vrlhd radio and I don't think it really did anything. It might even have made my wifi at home slower! But maybe I'm just paranoid lol

I don't think the HD radio did anything to improve my already piss poor reception either.
Synergy r73, Trinity Alpha 7 thanks to the monkey
Yeah none of the radio updates have made any significant difference for me. At my house, my old Motorola phones always had full (4 bars) of 3G, and my bionic actually could pick up a bar or two or 4G every now and then.
My GSIII gets a bar or two of 3G at best, and my reception fluctuates between -100 and -80. I would've never gotten this phone had I known the reception would be this weak.
Everything else about the phone is good, but none of it matters when you can't really use it like a phone and have to depend on wifi, which is somehow also weaker than any other device I've ever used.

There's no two ways about it - Samsung radios suck @$s. I dumped a Galaxy Nexus earlier this year for this very issue and switched to a rockin' radio Moto razr maxx.
It may be hard to believe, but the s3 radio is actually better than the Nexus was. Fortunately for me I moved to an area with strong 4g almost everywhere, hence I can enjoy the rest of the s3. If I hadn't moved, however, there is no way I would have given up the moto.
It would be nice to see Samsung get their act together. Oh, and don't expect a software update to fix anything.....it won't.

If you are referring to the HD verison it's not making much difference for most. Or do you have information on something else?
I can barely if at all use my phone at my house or my neighbors across the alley..I have to be on WiFi..I have tried every radio including the leaked HD radio..all horrible..part of me really hoped Samsung would somehow fix this seeing as how they have acknowledged that it is an issue...is there any other way they are going to be able to fix it? Meaning is it just the radio and all they can do is keep trying? Or is there stuff they can fix more on the software side..maybe the RIL (radio layer interface) which as I understand is kind if the middle man software wise between the radio and the operating system..idk just sucks to have such an amazing and fast phone and to really be ready to get rid of it because it is that un usable..and don't get me going with touch wiz..I can't believe how sloe that makes this phone..aosp ROMs are easily 3 times as fast but then they have the data drop issues which are just starting to be fixed now by the RIL patch... ugh so much to think about..wish there was another phone out with a big developer community that was good unlike the galaxy nexus

Maybe the JB update will have better software side support? Or maybe you could take it to your Verizon store and see if it's an issue with your phone? Idk
Well I know its a known problem and I read somewhere that Samsung acknowledged the issue but either way I'm going to call for a replacement just to see if it makes a difference..just gotta think if what to say..cause I know if I just say I have signal issues they will say that smasung is working in an update to fix it..lots of people on all the forums have said that's what they were told when they called for signal issues
