[Q] Looking for certain features in drawing apps - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I am still on the fence on buying a galaxy note 10.1. I was thinking of using it to replace my xperia play as a cellphone and my m200 tablet pc as my main drawing/fun tool. I'm thinking of retiring the m200 since the color replication is awful due to the awful viewing angle and the fact that it is very slow (celeron 1.7ghz ftw).
I normally do drawings using photoshop or Artrage. The features I always use are the following:
1. Open another image on the same window to use as a reference image (PS, artrage)
2. I enable grids on both images to ensure accuracy to help making a 1:1 copy easier (PS)
3. Gaussian Blur + blending modes (PS, to make an easy glow effect on a duplicate layer with certain blending options
4. Use of natural materials (Fake paintbrush texture, paper texture in artrage)
5. Creating an image with a high resolution like 4000x3000
6. Smudge, Burn, and Dodge (PS)
7. PSD Output
Is there an application for the galaxy note 10.1 that has most of these features? I checked and the GIMP has not yet been ported to android...sadly. I'm not picky about pressure sensitivity since I never learned to use it well enough on my m200. I prefer setting the brushes manually for predictability.

1.You can use Overscreen floating browser for reference.
2.Grids - you can prep with a layer template in PhotoshopTouch or SketchbookPro
3. These are all in PhotoshopTouch
4.SketchbookPro has options for pen pressure to control opacity or radius of brush, and a selection of 90 brushes - not sure if you can make custom brushes.
5.Latest PhotoshopTouch update says it supports 12 megapixel images. Oem .apk has not updated, but I have purchased previously.
6.PhotoshopTouch has Smudge tool, but not dodge and burn, but can achieve results with layer modes.
7.SketchbookPro also has PSD output

I prefer layerpaint to scketchbookpro. I suggest that you buy and test both. Layerpaint allows only the spen imput, if configured to do so.

i haven't found anything perfect yet. i like sketchbook's brushes, but layerpaint's ability to make a high res image. i don't really use ps touch since you have to use adobe cloud to open or save psd, which is sad since sketchbook and layerpaint can do it natively.

Image editing for WM5?

I am looking for a tool to edit the photos I take with the built in camera on the device itself. I need: crop, resize, color correction (white balance, hue, saturation, etc). Are there tools for WM5 I could use ?
XnView Pocket
Try the following piece of software:
http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=1275
I have found this quite useful for editing photos and images on my wizard. Best of all it's free!
Since it is categorised as a "viewer": Does it have the editing functions I mentioned? Unfortunately the homepage is in french and I have no idea what the fudge is going on.
Yes, you are able to edit photos/images.
The options available under tools are:
convert - change file format / quality
crop - crop images
resize - define image size
adjust - brightness / contrast / gamma / red / green / blue
rotate - -90 degrees, +90, +180 / vertical flip / horizontal flip
sharpen/smooth - allows to sharpen / smooth image
The link should take you to pdagold.com which is in english.
I think you will find it has most if the functions you require. Try it, it's free!
Thanks, I'll give it a try and report back.
Pocket Artist by consuit software is, in my opinion, the best piece of graphics software for a pda. hands down.
spb imageer works good also. So does the one by rosco...I like to take pics then crop right away or take away redeyel both of the above progz will pdo it fo ya.
any updates on imge editing software?
cheers
Pocket Artist really is the most powerful tool imho.
cool, will give it a go
cheers

-...
Version 9 10.10.2012:
-Faster Rendering for all Objects
-Changed to old fluid colors
Version 8 07.10.2012:
loading custom obj files!
Load any 3D-Mesh to your 3D live wallpaper!
Just place "beammeup.obj" on sd root and activate loading from settings.
Try with attached exampes.
News: New HTC-evo-3D stereoscopic Version in new thread...
obj-import will work for both versions soon:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904203
Version 7 25.09.2012:
saved some cpu-power, reworked internal framerate-and sensordelay, re-balanced Color Fluid Surface-Particles, fixed a bug of previous Versions not showing 3D-Andoid if active alone.
Version 6 25.09.2012:
HTC-Evo-3D Stereoscopic Flying Particle added in landscape and portrait
Version 5 25.09.2012:
-HTC-Evo-3D Stereoscopic 3D Mode supported in landscape and portrait with auto switchig orientation. Use with "Jmz 3D Switcher". 3D-Mode can be used with other Objects. It has one build-in Image yet and can load custom, pre-interlaced in devices resolution. Will add sterescopic support for 3D-Objects like the Android and loading custom obj´s. Also particles flying into your head...
-Optimized color fluid and beta-particles a little and rebalanced the connection between both so activate both and test.
-I forgot to disable multisampling on Version 4 so it is the only version with multisampling. It will not run on devices without ms. Also it looks a little better and runs a little slower. This is was only Version 4, "fixed" on Version 5...
Fix Version 4 24.09.2012: Path to not-cropped Image will be saved since this version, so selected Image will come up after reboot or resetting wallpaper. If image is not avilible because sdcard is not mounted yet after reboot, backup tex will be used until sdcard is mounted. If Image is renamed or deleted, also backup tex will be used until you set another image or restore missing file. So all Settings should work fine now.
Note: Framerate and Sensorspeed are tweaked to 100% to give you a very smooth first run, until you touch the framerate slider first time.
I can't stop touching my phone!
BIG UPDATE Liquid Version 3 23.09.2012:
So much new stuff: New Objects, New Features, New artworks, New Settings, many Fixes and Changes, improved stability.
New Objects:
-The amazing Color Fluid Surface(including; Liquid Colors, Anti-Color, Particles, a swimming Object, Connections to other Objects, own new sub-section in Settings)
-Full Screen Image(just shifting a little with homescreen)
-New Liquid Beta-Particles (linked to the Fluid Surface to make 2 fluid physics engines connected driving each other!)
-The amazing Color Fluid Surface:
Get a realy liquid screen.
Make fine colorfull swhirls with each finger or mix the whole fluid witch all touch points.
Continuously auto-selecting the "next most-amazing color" for each touch point.
See the colors mixing transparent on any background.
Finger 4 will dropp Anti-Color, the mathematical opposite of Color. Anti-Color and Color will be colorfull neutralized against each other. Naturally Anti-Color is invisible but I found a way to show it. It´s enabled on default and will change to it´s naturally invisibility if switching to "Inverse Fluid Colors".
The Engine has it´s "own" swimming Particles and a swimming customizable Object.
Some Objects are connected to the fluid and will swimm in fluid and/or add forces to it.
The Fluid Particles are very fine and have some options, you can select an independent build-in texture to keep them look Particle-like while using any Picture on other Objects.
Fluid Surface code is great but calculated on cpu and needs power at higher fluid resolution. This needs some optimizations, I will try to move some expensive calculations to faster scripts or buffer-array-operations to make it run faster at higher resolutions. Rendering fluid is already fast.
-Static Background Picture. It´s just shifting a little with homescreen. If you select a not-transparent Picture, background will hide the 3D-Android and the 3D-Background Particles, so don't forget to disable hidden Objects to safe power.
-New Liquid Beta-Particles.
Interesting dynamic physics. Connected to Fluid Surface, if active together, engines will move each other, result will move very dynamic or chaotic.
Beta because unoptimized, slow, cpu draining, laggy touch and unstable physics could force close somtimes because moving out of bounds. But It can blast the Fluid
-New Image Artworks all supporting Transparency:
If you want to use old removed Images, you can extract the Images from old apk file.
-New Settings. Added icons to most options. Select Picture direct from Image-Buttons.
As simple and friendly as possible.
Linked gravity-sensor-delay to framerate slider to make it fast or power-saving together.
Added info and contact button linked to this thread(nothing else online yet).
Wallpaper runs fine without sdcard now. Just Cropping Image is not possible without sdcard reasonable.
- Build on Android 4.1.-, minimum required Android 2.2.
Runs Best on 4.1 with "additional features" and best stability. Settings Icons will not be visible on older Androids than 2.3.3 if I am right.
Runs on every phone and virtual device I tested. Also it runs on my TegravII Tablet on Android x86 4.0 R2 but only the 3D-Android is shown and changing Picture works but everything else not. So I will try to get it running complete on not fully compatible Android x86 later.
-Bugs: Nothing is realy broken for me. For left bugs seems just trying again makes it fine.
Loading or Cropping Pictures could still fail on bigger images or incompatible formats. I will rework the image handling a little softer to make this stable. Unfortunately Wallpaper can force close on first start in some cases.
This was next step to get everything ready for more interesting stuff.
Please send some feedback after testing.

Version 2 28.08.2012:
-New Version Build on Android 4.1.(V1 was build on Android 2.2)
-Fixed a Cropping Bug(should run more stable on most devices)
-Added Settings and Wallpaper Picker Icon, Picker can be launched after Setup
-Some Changes on loading Settings, Settings can be used before setting Wallpaper now
-This Update should fix most bugs and enable new UI in Settings!
Wallpaper Description:
Highly customizable by loading Images to interacitve Objects on fast GLES2 (OpenGL ES 2.X) Engine.
MainFeatures:
-Load any Image from Gallery to any interactive object! (supporting jpg and png with transparency)
-Load any Image cropped from Gallery to any interactive object! (supporting jpg and png without transparency)
-Fast GLES2 Engine! -Multitouch -Gravity-Sensor
-Transparency on all objects (if transparent png used)
-5 included Example Images with transparency
-Many Settings
Objects:
-Big multitouch Layer in foreground supporting G-Sensor
-Background 3D-Particles floating and rotating on Home-Screen-Shift
-High-Quality Particle System, dropping Particles from all touch-points to Gravity-Direction. Particles are rotating and random glittering when dying.
-The Bouncing Object. Elastic, downfalling, touchable, could be anything depending on the picture you select. This can get knot, you can unknot by throwing around or resetting by hiding Wallpaper(opening an app or turning display off and on will reset physics)
-The 3D-Android. Mustsee! Smooth, high Quality 3D Object with fine Mapping your Image. Rotating on Homescreen Shift and Gravity-Sensor.
Engine/App Features:
-required Android 2.2. <-> 4.1 compatible.
-Superfast GLES2 Engine on low CPU Power. Everything is displayed via optimized Shaderscripts on the GPU Buffer.
-Adjustable Framerate. Depending on Device Speed and selected Objects you can save Power by slowing down Framerate. Best result shold be about 90% with a little delay. At 100 % it will run without delay, should be no problem but not required.
-Low CPU-Power at all. Worst case with all Objects active and 100% Framerate(no delay) it consumes only about 30% CPU Power on my Evo 3D.
-Wallpaper only needs Power if visible. Propper freeing all recources and unregistering sensors if invisible.
-Settings Launcher in Notification Bar.(could be toggled in settings)
-Can be moved to sdcard in app menu
-I will implement much more (ai talking to you, more Physics, 3D-Wallpaper-Designer-App, obj-Importer,Kinect-Scan-Importer...)
Premissions:
Change/Delete External Storage. Neede to save the cropped Image.
Loading From Galery Info:
Without cropping only a link will made to load the original Image. Loading linked Image can fail! Chance to fail is higher on larger images. Also re-initialising after sucsessfull load can fail. Also speed will slow down if using big images. No Problems on smaller images, great for loading png icons with transparency. Ideal size is 512x512 Pixels (Image will be used direct as gl texture without resizing). After rebooting Device link to Image could get lost and backup tex will be loaded. Please select Image again.
By Cropping a resized 512x512 Version is saved on sdcard/jbGLESIIwallpaper/curbg.png. You can replace this Image with a transparent png for example and it should come up if you select cropped from Gallery without finishing cropping(that would overwrite the replaced)
This should work without Problems. Cropping Pictures could fail. Try again, this should bring up any jpg or png.
BUGS!!!
-Please set Wallpaper before launching Settings!!! Launching Settings before setting Wallpaper can drive you into strange Behaviours*.
-Wallpaper needs SD-Card! Wallpaper should run without sd but needs sd to start, to launch setting and to bring up custom images. If custom image is selected, wp should use backup Image and load your selected if sd is mounted again.
-Selecting Images from Gallery can fail. Please try again or try cropped.
-Selecting Images from Gallery can crash the Wallpaper or get into strange Behaviours*.
-It is only tested on my Evo [email protected], a Xperia [email protected] and some emulator images. It works on the SDK-Emulators GPU-Emulation (faster as suspected). Loading the Image as GLESII Texture needs the GPU to support the pixels format, this may fail on some devices or drivers.
-Wallpaper will start on default settings after rebooting device, setting another Wallpaper, crashing or re-installing, but your Settings are saved and will be restored if launching Settings Menu.
*strange Behaviours: waiting, staying black, force close, not opening settings, text in settings broken, asking for superuser premissions.
If you get into strange Behaviours please kill the app from app menu and try again. Everything will work fine!
a bug-free version would have not all the features yet. I am very sorry for any Problem and except everyone will be able to get it running fine.
I hope someone will have fun with it! I like it. I coded this using many open sources. It is just the beginning, to get the engine perfect with all features I want. This will be much more soon.

other good drawing apps for galaxy note 10 s pen

I like the s note but it dont have alot of features i was wondering if there is sny more apps out there
hello, i think i can help you since i only bought this tablet for sketching.
the apps i use are the following :
sketchbook pro, layer paint, infinite paint, tvpaint.
sketchbook pro is the best app for sketching, only 5€. the good points are the powerfull brush engine that allows you to do smooth lines, it s the best app for drawing, the interface is very user friendly. You can also export your sketch in psd. The cons are that you can t change the canvas size so you are limited to 1280xsomething and you can only make 6 layers (why i wonder...).
layer paint 2€ is an alternative to sketchbook and very powerful too, brushes are smooth but not as much as sketchbook, you can make a lot of layers and canvas size is unlimited (don't try too wide). It has less tools than SBP so it's less flexible when you want to correct something. I don't know why but i don't like the brush engine, not very natural... some might like it though
infinite paint is very basic and rough but it has interesting brushes that allow you to make funny drawings
tv paint is the most powerfull app and has the best brush engine of all but it's a beta so the interface is terrible, it's an animation software so you have to learn how to use it. it's free so just try it.
some of my sketches: first is sketchbook pro, 3 others are layerpaint. you see the first one is much smoother.
At the play store there 2 free infinite paint apps do you know what the difference is?

i don't know i only have the classic full version. Maybe the Note version might be better but the one I have does support pressure sensitivity.

Art/Drawing apps - optimal settings thread

In order to get the best experience from whichever app you are using, it is necessary to adjust a myriad of settings to cater to your preferred style.
So to help new users (or provide insight to those already familiar with the app), please feel free to share the settings that work for you.
With natural media, my preferred medium is a 0.3mm pacer. This way I can take a sketch all the way to a finished work with a high level of detail. All with just one tool.
So first and foremost I look for the ability to replicate this medium (as close as possible) in whichever art app I am using.
Until yesterday, the app that came closest from my experience was 'Sketchbook Pro for Galaxy'.
That all changed when I installed the new 'LayerPaint HD'
So I'm going to begin by sharing my settings for LayerPaint HD
*Please note that for an optimal sketching experience in all the apps I've tried, it is necessary to disable 'settings/system/s pen/Air View'
Otherwise that little blue donut will obscure a small area around the tip of your pen and will compromise your accuracy.
*For some apps, like this one and Sketchbook, I find that disabling screen rotation makes the ease of use much better as there is no annoying break to your work flow.
LayerPaint HD
My layout:
Settings (All options listed are active):
*Use of Pen Pressure
*Disable Single Touch
*Use of Multithreading
*Brush Interpolate
*Show Brush Size Cursor
*Volume Key Undo-Redo
*Position Toolbar Always on Right or Left
*UI Scale - 75%
*Show Pixel Grid
*Show Brush Opaque Bar
Now for the Brush Settings:
Pen:
Width - 4px
Min Width - 0%
Opaque - 100%
*Size by Pressure
Pencil:
Width - 3px
Min Width - 0%
Opaque - 100%
*Size by Pressure
*Opaque by Pressure
Eraser (Hard):
Width - 16px
Min Width - 0%
Opaque - 15%
*Size by Pressure
*Opaque by Pressure
*Soft Edge
Eraser (Soft):
Width - 15px
Min Width - 0%
Opaque - 3%
*Size by Pressure
*Opaque by Pressure
*Soft Edge
I haven't really played with the other brushes as they aren't that useful for my style of sketching.
Why I prefer LayerPaint HD over Sketchbook, is that with these settings I can achieve a very light thin line with my pencil and with a bit more pressure achieve a nice solid line. Very much like I would with a 0.3mm pacer. The sensitivity and range of opacity is greater than what I can achieve in Sketchbook Pro, so shading is a lot easier and my lines are more precise and detailed.
Nevertheless, my next post will detail my custom settings for 'Sketchbook Pro for Galaxy'.
Wow. I might need to pick up LayerPaint HD. I'll wait for your post on Sketchbook for Galaxy first, though.
While not app specific, I've been running my drawing apps through IOBIT Advance Mobile Care's Gaming Booster. It forces background apps to close and prevents them from opening up again so in theory is freeing up as much processor and RAM resource for the app in question.
I couldn't say if it makes a significant improvement or not as its become habbit to open them this way. I cant remember what it was like running them directly.
Interesting. I'll check out that app... haven't noticed any lag when sketching... so ill resist using it until I experience a slow down, then I'll test to see if the app helps at all.
Cannot find game booster anywhere if i search iobit on playstore all i get is 1 app AMC Security Thanks for settings ,btw what happened to settings fo r sketchbook?

Sorry, I got caught up in real life... haven't sketched in weeks. I'm desperately making up stock for the mid year festivals. I literally don't have a moment to spare. I may have some time to make that post about Sketchbook in 2 - 3 weeks time.
Sorry everyone.

Sorry, I got caught up in real life... haven't sketched in weeks. I'm desperately making up stock for the mid year festivals. I literally don't have a moment to spare. I may have some time to make that post about Sketchbook in 2 - 3 weeks time.
Sorry everyone.

After seeing a few questions here on this thread... I downloaded this app, and am impressed with such ease of use. Your settings are a bit better than defaults. Though I am a novice sketcher... more of a doodler. This app makes the stylus seem more fluid than I expected, and being pretty bad with pens and pencils, being a lefty. I was able to do some nice starters on hair patterns, that always drove me up the wall.
Thanks for not only giving out some good settings, but introducing an app that is not only good but fun to use.

Which of s7 features do you like the most

Game Launcher
Hyperlapse
Motion panorama
Quick Call
Bye-Bye-App-drawer
New Edge UI
Always On Display
Motion Panorama.
too many to list. but I guess off the top of my head:
the display:
literally the best consumer display in the world with virtually perfect professional reference level color fidelity, paper-like clarity with no diagonal edge bias (due to innovative proprietary diamond subpixel arrangement), infinite contrast and eye punching brightness that maintains perfectly even saturation and contrast unlike with lcd. Moreover the Screen calibration feature allows for various color space standards which is a must-have for professional photography or graphic work. Extremely High sensitivity screen allows for gloved use. Only just enough bezel to allow for screen edge swiping with a case installed leaving the device as narrow as possible making it much more nimble for one handed use and a bit less pants pocket stretching. Always on display is great as it allows me to check the time, date and notifications without having to turn on my phone--far superior in so many ways to the old way of decoding the color and speed of the flashing led.
Samsung pay:
their proprietary technology allows the device to simulate a magnetic card swipe which works anywhere unlike android pay and apple pay which only work on certain terminals. It constantly amazes everyone.
IP68 water and dust proof:
As beautiful as the S7 is it is indeed a fingerprint magnet. This is a problem with many phones so stylishly slick but unlike other phones when the S7 loses its lustre you can simply rinse it off under the sink and polish it off with a bath towel--good as new.
Powered USB otg with support for so many add ons:
gaming controllers, midi keyboards, file storage, keyboards, mice. I was surprised to find that I can charge another device with my phone and even spin up and operate a USB hard disk without any need for additional power cables.
the camera:
so amazing I use it for augmented vision. Not only can I inspect from the distance whether that little spot on the wall is a fly or a spider without getting off my lazy ass but I can see and read things where it would otherwise be far too dim for my eyes to see without need for additional lighting. Oh yea, and it also takes amazing pictures in just two clicks. I never miss a shot because even in the rare times when I would I can rely on motion photo to reverse time and recapture the picture just how I wanted. The expanding library of camera modes just kick it over the edge of awesomeness. In real world use I tend to switch between auto, pro, rear selfie, slow motion, and gif maker. I use burst a lot too which is available whenever you press and hold the shoot button.
ui:
I've found split screen and pop up mode more and more useful for working with and between multiple apps. Web browsing and reading while streaming music or watching YouTube and/or chating just feels great. I use my laptop so little these days which is so much better for my posture. Text selection is also improved paired with the hypersensitive screen. You can rely on the precision of the tip of your thumbnail and not the blunt tip of your finger. The adjustable dpi hack gives you more work space immediately expanding the usefulness of large screen.
I haven't even begun to touch on so many other things but I can definitely go on if anyone wants me to.
This is by far the most satisfied I've ever been with a phone and I've been using smart phones since when they were called PDAs. I never thought I'd be so satisfied with a non rooted android device but I don't find myself missing anything except perhaps the stereo sound hack and the Xposed framework but with all the features I'm discovering and looking forward to the gear vr Im sure I'll find enough ways not to care.
I don't use any of the features you listed, but i'd say my favorite "features" are (no particular order)
-Double tap home for camera shortcut
-Theme engine
-Split screen
-triple tap home for one handed use
Best hardware features are easily the screen and the camera. Build quality is amazing, honestly feels better in the hand than metal IMO, and IP68 is just an awesome feature to have.
Samsung has activated Display scaling in the newest Galaxy S7 firmware, it gives the user greater control over how much information is packed onto the screen.
That one isn't hidden anymore. Nice!

In the display menu if you received the last update, otherwise you have to download Nova Launcher and activate through a specific nova action (you can then uninstall Nova).
Steps to follow :
Step 1: Head on over to the Google Play Store and download Nova Launcher
Step 2: Launch Nova Launcher. There's no need to set it as a default.
Step 3: Do a long-press on the home screen and tap on Widgets.
Step 4: Look for the Activities widget and bring it to the home screen.
Step 5: Look for Settings and tap on .DisplayScalingActivity. This will create a shortcut on the home screen.
Step 6: Tap on the newly created shortcut. There you have it, the option to go either Standard or Condensed.

the last update you're talking about is the one from T-Mobile? I have T-Mobile and I got one update from Samsung and one from T-Mobile.
Nop, it's a Sammy update that began to roll out a couple days ago fixing some side touching issues, photo stuff too and a lot of other things too
S7 here..Stock..TouchWiz Launcher..T-Mobile carrier
#1 Feature: Samsung Pay. When I saw my wife use her Note 5 to pay at WalMart, my MotoX Pure suddenly became obsolete.
#2. SD Card has returned. 32GB onboard isn't sufficient for me and now with 128GB extra, I'm content.
#3, Android 6.0.1. Battery Optimizations net me 20 total hours on battery with a 4-6 hour Screen On Time. Wow!
#4 Gear VR compatibility. I have the VR and it is stunning and so next-generation.
#5 Speaker is loud. While not idea for cranking up the tunes, it's perfect for voice calls and voicemail.
#6 SideSync and SmartSwitch. These two apps fill in the features that iTunes backup and Continuity brought to iOS.
#7 TouchWiz is scaled down enough to not get in the way of using the phone. Still packed with options, but it works right out of the box.
