[Q] Data Connection Spotty - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I had CM 9.0 on my skyrocket for a month before anything wonky happened to data. Then yesterday my data connection just kept dropping. I mean the cell-data connection (3g, HSPA, 4G, etc). I know it was supposed to be an issue in some of the early releases of CM9, but I never had any problems until yesterday.
Being over-reactive, I installed CM 9.1 and have experienced the same issues. I'm looking for advice on how to get this thing working properly again. It's like the radio just doesn't want to work sometimes.

That's a stupid blanket statement that's extremely vague I would like you to either elaborate or never use that statement again as in my area data has always been strong no issues with service so your point is invalidated

Let me tell you your input is stupid , sometimes people in middle of a problem forget about the basic things when troubleshooting .... And as OP said data was fine for a good amount of time then it crapped out ...
Checking what quality of data the others are getting is the first step in this issue ... Rulling this out is essential.
PS:What does your data quality do with the OP ? double membership or what ?

You said at&t's data is stupid which is a blanket statement if it's down in a specific area ok but all of AT&t,s data come on let's be careful in our wording

Excuse me it's not your responsibilty to teach me how to name things ... If you like att that much cheer about it with yourself ...
Have a nice day

Really excited about all the kind-hearted advice you guys have given me. I'm still having the issue, though I now understand it better. It seems to be especially bad on the towers near my house (awesome ). Other places it is not as bad, although I've found that if I reset that data connection it seems to do great for about 2-3 minutes. It isn't ROM specific. I've tried CM9, 9.1, and Embryo 4, all have the same issue. It's gotta be a radio/network thing.
So, I thought maybe I'm getting throttled, but I stay under 2GB every month so that isn't it. Plus, that wouldn't explain the fact that on some towers it seems to work just fine. I'm guessing it must be a local tower issue? Any other reasonable guesses are appreciated - unreasonable ones are not (ex. Perhaps the sasquatch caused it).

Funny thing is probably most of the confusion was with people who had rooted or flashed roms (at least that was my situation). Cause I've read a lot about people restoring old backups and other roms because they saw they were on 1x.

Good call. I almost did a restore then saw the news. Still might do a restore though because I'm using the CM7 pre-alpha and there is a terrible mic echo in calls.

Selling my G2x (unfortunately) - will not tolerate the droping of calls any more

I don't know why I am sharing this here.
I have just listed my G2x on Amazon and Craigslist.
This phone continues to drop the signal. I am getting calls dropped (is there ANYTHING more annoying than dropping a call - especially when it is an important one?!), signal lost and everything that comes along with it.
NOTHING (nothing!) should overshadow this issue with the phone! Not dual-core, 8MB cam, ICS or battary life.
What isn't clear to me is WHY others are accepting this.
Perhaps though, this is is the reason that the G2x (despite being a phenomenal phone on paper) barely sells online and is hard to sell in general.
Perhaps we (the people who even care enough to join forums and so on), represent the minority.
Goodbye G2x!

Probably because it isn't as widespread a problem as you're thinking it is. I'm on T-Mobile as well and my G2X gets great signal and call quality.
Not saying it's not a real issue for you, just saying its probably not a widespread issue for the majority of G2X users or I'm sure there'd be about 30 threads about it, all created within about a day of each other and all saying the same thing.

I never knew it could be a SIM issue. I WILL CHECK THAT OUT !!!! Going to the TMobile store right now!
Will update.
Thank you all
IT WAS THE SIM CARD INDEED !!!!!
Part of the reason I posted this here, is because I knew the good people of XDA will start a brainstorming discussion.
My other SIM card was very bad looking, and it is now changed to a NEW one. The TMobile representative said that I MUST change my sim card when she saw it.
I AM VERY HAPPY I posted my situation here!!!
No lost calls (did a 20 min call to test it) for now - but obviously will check on that more to confirm
THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR HELP

1. Are you running the stock firmware?
2. Has this issue continued from the time you purchased the phone up until now.
3. Does the issue appear to be location specific? The reason I ask is because you stated it was working after the SIM was replaced then come back 24 hours later saying you had problems again.
4. Have you tried contacting T-Mobile customer support? They most likely won't be able to solve your issue if it is a problem with your handset (beyond trying a SIM swap, they will have you try your SIM in another known working handset typically, to isolate your device) but they will be able to rule out issues with your account, the network, etc.

Turned on LTE in Ohio....

I want to try it again... Is tethering on Android any different than on the iphone? I guess they were easily able to tell on the iphone, but is it the same case on android?? BTW, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can tether if you are rooted. From what I was reading it seemed that the people that were doing this were not being charged by AT&T. Although I only read a few posts and don't know the details.
I'm sure someone here can clarify further.
Ive Seen it in Stow, Akron, and Canton.

Ah, can't wait for it to get around Cincinnati.
Yeah about month ago i saw in chapel hill area and tried to do few quick speed test inside a building and speeds were just ok. I think AT&T is building it first in akron and then cleveland. Bc still have to see LTE show up on phone in cleveland area.

in regards to tethering, they can tell. When you tether they can tell by looking at the data packets. I'm not sure about the specifics, but the type of data packets or the signature or something changes so they can tell.
That's how they could tell with the iPhones, I'm sure its the same thing regardless of which phone you have because its more of a network thing.
I tether, with my old iPhone and this phone. But I'm not a heavy user (almost never even get close to 1gb of data). Never been yelled at.
If you do get called out on it, just play dumb. Just be like oh I didn't know I was doing that. I run Ubuntu from my phone, that might be it. You know, stuff that the representative won't know how to deal with / can't deal with it.

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. maybe i'll give it a few more months before i try.

Dear XDA, I have a One S and have been getting this notification to upgrade ...

But have seen on here that a lot of people are having issues afterwards. How do I get it to stop notifying me about it?
Alternatively, is it really bad? Because I already have connection issues (not bad signal, the issue resides on my handset) where I have to toggle airplane mode off then on again to get it to connect, and then only for a few minutes max. I am also asking around /r/android about this now, but I mostly want your opinions.

Sprint in south Florida

OK I'm starting this post for my buddy who has a sprint galaxy nexus we live in south Florida and spring took there towers off line today to do some service to there towers well when they put them back online they deactivated his service and when he called customer service he told them his phone was rooted and unlocked with a custom ROM and they told him that sprint probably seen that his phone was rooted and that is why they deactivated his device well he has it back on now and is getting no data what so ever

cant see that happening tbh, why would a phone network care about what you do to your device? Only the phone manufacturer would care about you invalidating your warranty if you were to book it in for repair.

Tell him to do a profile update. Settings -> About Phone -> Sprint updates -> Update Profile (if I remember correctly) and then Update PRL. Otherwise just call up Sprint and tell them he's not getting data and they should be able to refresh his profile from their end. Also, they can't do anything about you rooting your phone as it's yours. If he starts tethering like 50GB a month or something stupid like that, then yeah there's an issue. But I'm assume it's normal usage. Why he even bothered telling the lady his phone is rooted is beyond me...No offense, but that was pretty stupid.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. She told me that my best bet would be to flash back to stop and start over. She concluded with an offer to follow up with me after I flashed back to stock and she could rectify the data situation then. Call me crazy but I think I want the opinion of the guys who know what's going on and not the one of the chick reading off her computer screen. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

I asked her if there were going to be notes on my account mentioning it being rooted and she said yes but she said she was putting another note stating that the phone was being returned to stock. So I don't know. I'm learning and the main thing I'm learning is that the more I try to learn about this ****, the worse it's getting. The thing I hate the most is that this is a way to break away from the communist machine that is Sprint but somehow they still have me by the balls.

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:
"I called a while ago because I was having issues with data. A rep told me to punch in a code in the dialer and he also gave me the MSL code for my phone, but I can't find where I wrote it down. Do you mind telling me how to re-do the Handsfree Activation?"
Follow the instructions and see if that works. If nothing comes up on the dialer when you punch in the code, your ROM doesn't have Handsfree-Activation included. Try going to a stock ROM or ROM that has the Sprint menus in it.

I'm gonna have to jump on this first thing in the morning. Thanks for the advice. I will post any results on this thread as they unfold.
I would go as far to say it would be illegal for the phone company to cut you off for tethering a device that you own. (There are apps such as FoxFi that bypass the 'tethering tax' mobile networks try to claim) However, as someone said previously if you are downloading heavily then I guess they could cut you off for that.
At T-Mobile, NO such policy of cutting you off exists and they rely solely on throttling and packet shaping.

Thing is, he barely knows what he's doing. He's rooted and ROM'd but that's it. He's new to this whole thing. I don't even think he was tethering; I was just using it as an example for why a phone company wouldn't want you rooting their devices. But yeah I agree, you can't get cut off for modifying your device like that unless it was doing something that it logically should not be able to do (like if you were using it as a 24/7 server to host a website or something crazy).
