Will my phone OTA update to Jelly Bean if it is running CM10? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running CM10 because I wanted a taste of jelly bean, but now that jb is being rolled out for the Nexus s 4g I am wondering if it will still do the automatic update from sprint? I would rather use Sprints version of jb for the nexus s 4g. Will the OTA update still be sent to my phone if it is not running the stock rom?

No.

How should I fix this, then? Can i reflash the original sprint ics update? Is there a copy around here?

you can use the 7.2 one click tool to return to stock, but make sure to back up all of your aps and data first

Where can I find this, though? I didn't make a copy of it when I started flashing new roms.
Rookie mistake.

But isn't it possible that Sprint made a better running ROM for this phone that CM did? Can I expect the CM Jelly Bean ROMs to get better for the Nexus S 4g because Sprint released their version?
I know my noobness is showing but seriously I am trying

Your choice: stock rom (sprint ota) vs custom rom (cm10). Custom rom gives you more tweaks, enhancements, better battery life, etc...
A little bit of googling for sprint nexus s 4g ics factory images will take you right to the google page with the factory images. After flashing the 4.0.4 image, the jb ota should arrive. Of course read all instructions before flashing, and you will lose all apps/data

However, to answer your question, you should just install a custom ROM. They are nicer.

install a custom rom.
Have you ever rooted it, or flashed any custom roms? I think that can interfere with OTA updates.
Either way, all you have to do is install a custom rom. I recommend the EOS ICS 1.0.0 rom. Check it out here.
Nightlies are better and have more features.

No! Nightlies are different
Only use nightlies if you know what it is. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has difficulties updating his stock rom...
Getting the update message on EOS 1.0.0 now. I will agree this ROM is much better than stock

Nexus S: Cyanogenmod 7.2 or Stock

Alright the situation is i got a newish phone and plan on giving my nexus S to my parents, right now its running the nightly. I want to be sure they have something stable. So i am looking at either switching it to Cyanogenmod 7.2 or the stock rom. I have heard that they have released 4.1 stock rom for Nexus S, I have not seen it if anyone has a link please comment with it.
My parents are not tech savy but they need a better phone. So Stock or Cyanogen?
The JB Android 4.1 update is very stable. Set them up with that by following the steps given in our nexus s forums. Good luck!

I would recommend Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Stock. Should be totally sufficient + they get to have Google Now
I recommend on CM9.0 RC-2, which is stable and up to date
h ttp://get.cm/?device=crespo&type=RC
I would use a cym 9 rc2 because everything pretty much works and its really fast with the matr1x kernel. It also has great battery life with just enough customization.

I would use the Stock Stock JB Update or the cm9 RC2, but not cm7.2
definitely stock JB. You can download for Widgetsoid 2.x for notification toggles and a battery % widget, and they're set! JB is really feature rich and awesome!
For 4.1 JB I was looking around for a guide for Nexus S 4.1 rooted. My version is I9020XXJK8. I gave seen a few guides but not that many links for the actual zip of JB 4.1. Also how do you update CWM?

Try this. If you have JB then just do the bottom part (superuser, clockworkmod, etc.)

Do they have Google Now that runs on a stock TW Rom, rooted? Google Now will be the one thing I will miss from my GNEX JB Rom.

Like how you can finally add your teams manually also
Google Now error [CM10 on SGS3/Verizon]
On my Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon, with CM10 nightly, Google Now keeps telling me that I need to turn on Google's location service. But it is on. This notification keeps coming back and I can't get any further with Google Now.
Known issue? Am I missing something??
I went from stock rooted to cm10 and now Beans build 9.. Which is the best right now imo
I'm sure this could be installed as an apk, not flashed correct?
Google now has to be hacked to work on ics. Which is why there are a few bugs currently compared to jb roms. Will probably take a few days for this update to work its way through the team that is porting it over.

Just switched from ios to droid

Hey everybody I just switched to DROID from using ios the past 4 years and I'm really happy with my choice. The iPhone 5 was the last straw for me so instead I picked up a feature packed galaxy siii. I want to thank you guys for the tutorials you guys have posted as it really helped in understanding how to flash the custom roms. I have my siii set just how I want. I just have one question if someone doesn't mind answering. When the official jellybean update comes out will I need to revert back to stock rom to update or can I update ota on a custom rom? Please excuse me if I didn't post this in the right section. This is my first post. Thanks for all your hard work.
I believe you would have to revert to stock and then do the ota.

Just wait for one of the Devs to do their magic on Jelly bean when it comes out. I'm sure it wont take them to long to do.
Congrats! Btw, if you're already running a custom rom, then you should probably just wait until the developer updates it, or install a new JellyBean rom when you're ready.

Take it easy on me lol
It kinda depends on how long you are willing to wait for the update. You definitely won't be able to accept the OTA update if you are running a custom rom, but devs will have a flashable version on XDA available almost immediately after the official is released. A couple of days later custom roms will start appearing.
Another reason to wait is there is always the possibility that the update will in some way disable root. This has happened before with several VRZ phones. So I would wait(a couple of hrs) till XDA gets their hands on the update before making any moves.

wait for a dev to release the official TouchWiz JB, then wipe data from cwm recovery and flash away. Fyi there currently is a TouchWiz JB leak by Incubus in the dev section, but its has bugs...If your looking for stability; Touchwiz ICS>AOSP(paranoidandroid,aokp,cm10)>Touchwiz JB Leak
And to help you, Synergy is a very stable ICS touchwiz ROM. Paranoid is a very great ROM but it might be a bit confusing for you since you're new with the tablet mod n tweaking APKs and such. CM10 is good but I like AOKP better for the customization

Nitro dont release builds based on a leaks...so until we get a official Touchwiz JB rom from VZW I doubt he will release anything!
Welcome to the Android community!
There are lots of good ROM choices and Jelly bean is available as a teaser if you'd like to check it out
My favorite ICS ROM is Synergy
My favorite JB ROM is Jellywiz
Enjoy and happy flashing !!!
You can make a nandroid backup of your current setup which saves everything, all your data/games. and try one of the current JB roms. I am currently on ICS cleanrom, and been thinking about waiting for a 100% working one to come around. The nandroid backup is so you can easily go back to your old setup if you don't like the newer rom.

He's working on an aosp JB build, has a working alpha right now, but until he gets his device this week, he can't work out the bugs quickly. You will see eclipse...I'm guessing pretty quickly after he gets his phone
He will have a TW Rom out...but I'm sure he will wait for the official JB build for that.

I second that!! Cleanrom is a GREAT first rom and it gives you a chance to mess with overclocking a lil too... Just go in SMALL steps... Although mine is a champ at 1.99ghz & stable as hell! You will finally feel the freedom that you get with Android! OPEN SOURCE baby!! No more damn itunes and buying stuff that isn't really yours..? Have a GREAT time surfing the threads but just take some time to read the rules as well cause they are quick to break you off some! (mods) LOL

[Q] What is the most stable ROM?

I am selling my HTC One S to a phone noob (ordered a Nexus 4) and I just need a ROM that will have as little issues as possible and is the most stable. Preferably Jelly Bean but ICS will do too. Doesn't matter if it is Sense or AOSP. Just something he can't mess up and come crying about. Any ideas?
AW: [Q] What is the most stable ROM?
I would suggest you to install the stock JB ruu on this phone. So its totally stock like he bought it in a store so he doesnt have to complain if sth doesnt work.
The other Option would be trickdroid which is very stable and bugfree as well.

CM10 (latest nightly) is the ROM to go to if you want stability, smoothness and AOSP look. CM10.1 is also good but it's not exactly as smooth as CM10 and stock JB e.g. in games.
But as he buyer might not be much technically oriented, I suggest stock JB. Search the forums. Here's a nice guide to doing it.
