the US HTC One S says 4G but its just DC HSPA+ which seems to work in India (Vodafone) its not 4g but we can say partial 4g the hspa+ signal is doubled to get double speed 42Mbps if am not wrong ..cheers bro .
And Like here 4G LTE (100mbps) is launched if it is launched in UK too , you will need new phone . NO 4g LTE phone has been launched yet in India . But they are giving Wifi routers

Realistically I don't think it matters. NOBODY actually gets anywhere close to 100 Mbps on any LTE connection. They'd be lucky to get 30. In that sense if we can hit those speeds on DC-HSPA+ then who cares about LTE?

Only i would of sold it before there is a mass of htc one s phones on the market that are not capable.
I read that the lte frequency in the UK is 1800mhz and the one s supports 1800mhz band
LTE is 4G. One S does not and cannot ever support LTE, and it's not a matter of frequencies.
One S does support DC-HSPA which gives a theoretical down link @ 42 Mbps.
Many many carriers around the world has DC-HSPA, Three in Sweden has it for example, though I haven't managed a better speedtest.net result than 19 Mbps myself on it... Best TMOUS speedtest.net I recall seeing here was ~25Mbps I think.
None of the 4 swedish carriers with LTE networks promise more than 80 Mbps, though the rules for calling something 4G originally stated it should provide 1Gbit to stationary users and 100 Mbps to mobile users.
T-mobile in USA calls DC-HSPA 4G for marketing reasons but it is still a 3G UMTS technology. Still plenty fast enough for anything on a phone IM:angel:

To take advantage of what some carriers like TMobile US would have you believe is 4G you don't need a new phone. If Three UK is anything like 3 Sweden then they have a nice 3G network which can pass for 4G in America.
To take advantage of LTE which is even faster you need a new phone.
You could download hrrm stream I mean say 9 HD episodes of say Top Gear and thus fill your entire sdcard on the One S in 120 minutes on a decent 3G connection though so I'd say LTE isn't really needed.
does 4G have a more reliable connection than 3G as sometimes i find 3G drops on the One S
In the UK, 4g is only available from EE (Orange/TMobile) and only in very few places and yes you need a new phone, also deep pockets because it is expensive.
After tweeting EE, they said the phone wasn't compatible with their 4G network.

Yes - anyone wanting true 4G (LTE) will not be able to do so with any HTC One S.
It is worth noting, however, that anywhere you can get LTE you will almost certainly get HSPA+ (which is supported by One S). For most, that will mean speeds over 2Mb/s and up to 7Mb/s and cost significantly less than LTE. With EE currently not being very generous with their download limits (or coverage), why not stick with 3G until the market gets a bit more competitive? That will fit in nicely for when you are probably due a shiny new phone...

Don't cheer too much yet, we need to wait a year. Also in a year AT&T will fully acquire T-Mobile and its networks. They paid the T-Mobile's owner 25BILLION up front. And AT&T will recieve the other 14BILLION from stock shares.
I heard on the news tonight that AT&T said that the T-Mobile users would have to get new phones to be able to use the 3G. Yes report said 3G. Looks like AT&T is planning to turn off the T-Mobile 4G and go with their 4G system. So this news of faster T-Mobile is not going to be good news for us T-Mobile customers.

Hmmm...would seem redundant due to tmos larger 4g network and since they're both gsm networks there shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah, i read on several sites that att is going to turn off the tmo 3g bands and convert it to theirs. I guess once the merger is complete it will render all tmo 3g/4g useless once they turn it off. At least us with 4g can enjoy faster speeds before att shuts it down.

I read that at&t is shutting down the 3g band but u can still access the 4g bands since it will be the same at as at&t's..

Att is looking to add frequencies to their new phones coming out. That way they can free up some of the congestion. If you think about it....killing off the tmo 4g would be stupid. Heck we only get 2g where I live now. Do you really need 3g or 4g? Nope I get plenty of wifi when out and about! Failed attempt by att as far as I'm concerned.

this would be great if i was getting drastically higher speeds on my mt4g. I get maybe 1 mb higher (on avg) than a non hspa+ device. so i dont care if it is 100mpbs im not seeing any huge speed boost in my HSPA+ area (miami, fl)

I have noticed in the 3 days since I have had my g2x that I never get 3g, I either get 2g or 4g on my status bar, but never 3g. Anybody else having this issue?? Considering sending it back to TMO for a new one. And yes I have a new similar card, got it about 3 months ago when I had my G2.

I've read other threads here where people report seeing a 3G icon... I haven't seen it myself.
But it's possible that we're in areas where HSPA+ is turned on, which is "4G", and once you leave that range, you are in 2G (EDGE) territory. In other words, there's no area near us that is just HSPA (3G), it's either HSPA+ or EDGE.

This, its not that we don't have 3g. Its that the display in the upper right hand corner says either 2g or 4g.

Actually there is a thread here where someone stated they did see 3G (I'm skeptical) on a long distance driving trip they did.
There is also a comment from someone that the "missing" 3G icon is a bug TMO is aware of and will fix in the first software update. Take it for what it's worth (although I would believe this one).
You will not see a 3G icon appear on any TMO 4G device.
Here is the reason:T-Mobile is using the same frequencies for 3G as they do for "4G". Meaning they are using the same cell tower/antenna. The upgrade in speed comes from a base station software upgrade and a strengthened backhaul. HSPA+ devices branded as 4G literally cannot tell the difference between 3G and 4G.

You forgot a technology: UMTS (on which HSPA is based). It can tell the difference between UMTS and HSPA (but not HSPA and HSPA+). That's why other phones have had separate "3G" and "H" icons. Both were originally 3G technologies (in the same way that GPRS and EDGE are both 2G), but HSPA has been expanded to now qualify as a 4G technology (I'm not going to argue semantics here, HSPA+ is 4G and provides faster speeds than WiMAX).
Has anyone pulled apart the framework-res.apk to see if there's a 3G png in there?
I haven't seen 3g sign either, only 2g or 4g, mostly 2g though, and I'm in vegas... I'm returning the phone for that reason, and I have very bad light bleeding from the top corners too. When calling t mobile, they don't even try to troubleshoot, I guess they r aware of that problem already. Now I'm waiting for another one in the mail

Just to add: The G2x is limited to 14.4Mbps theoretical maximum download speed So you won't enjoy anywhere near 21Mbps, or 42Mbps which is now rolling out slowly and is already in 3 cities (Las Vegas, NYC, Orlando). The most I've gotten on my G2x is 7.9Mbps down.

My beef is not the lack of a 3G icon, although I have yet to see one on my phone.
My beef is the lack of reception at my work, a problem the Galaxy S 4G and MyTouch 4G dont seem to have.
And why does the phone say UMTS when its on 4G ?
That right there tends to make me think the phone has an issue
(along with poor/no reception at work).
Could someone please tell me if there are two different versions of HTC Sensation. Are there 3G and a 4G versions available? The one I have ordered does not even mention anything about 4G. Thanks

they're all the same phone. It's not really 4G, just the US mobile providers using the term to try to 1-up their competition. Therefore only the tmous version will be Sensation 4G.
All the phones should be capable of 14Mbps HSPA+ tho.
Xnifex is right, 4G is the rage here in the states so everyone is trying to talk it up to entice buyers. HSPA+ is all we have on T-Mobile and the other 4G networks are small so eh.
I believe that I read somewhere that the Euro version IS capable of the same theoretical network speeds, it is just not advertised as 4G.

I just studied the specifications and, yes: Both versions are capable of the same speeds. 4G is just a marketing term T-Mobile (and other carriers) like to use.
In Europe (at least where I live), carriers don't usually advertise as being "4G" capable, even if they have started running LTE networks. I've seen advertisements for "HSPA+ speeds", LTE directly as well as "Air to Fiber" to highlight the carriers backend.
I don't think there are GSM/UMTS/LTE smartphones on the market right now, it is still a "future technology" for some time to come.

The guides work for both, just that most users on here seem to be American. The European model isn't 4G
It is basically just a naming difference, american carriers like to advertise as being "4G" even when they are only operating 3G networks, and the phone is only 3G capable (like T-Mobile US - they call HSPA+ "4G", which is a technology most modern networks have implemented at this time and is most definitively "3G").
I don't think there is any GSM/UMTS/LTE-capable phone from a major manufacturer available in the market (or even announced) at this point. There are, however, some USB datasticks that are LTE ("4G") capable.
And while the UK may lag a bit behind in LTE coverage compared to some countries of continental europe (although it really doesn't matter all that much at this point), LTE trials are being conducted in the UK at this time.
The Sensation and Sensation 4G are both capable of exactly the same speeds & standards.
Don't be fooled by all the "4G"-marketing, it is exceptionally meaningless.
There are a couple here in the US. Verizon and MetroPCS both have LTE.

Both are CDMA/LTE-carriers, not really comparable.
AT&T has started building a LTE-network as well, but their phones advertised as "4G" are still regular GSM/UMTS-phones (typically HSPA+ capable).
Which further reinforces my point, "4G" has become a meaningless marketing-term slapped on anything to suggest extraordinary speed to the uninformed.

It's not about speed, but technology - only LTE is considered "true" 4G over here, while HSPA is still very clearly a 3G technology.
Where I live, providers advertise with HSPA+ and LTE directly, A1 marketed "air to fiber" to highlight their supposedly fast backend.

Well when i had my Hero, Editing the build.prop line which said *something*gprs.class=10 to 12 i got 6-7mb download,which was enough to tether to my pc and HOST Modern warfare 2 with no problems

Does that mean this phone is fully 4g compatible? (I know the thrill is 4g but would like clarification)

That's strange, I'm on T-Mobile UK but my O3D hasn't changed yet to EE although I've had a text to say it will, so I guess their in the process of rolling out the new network. The phone is 4G ready (T-mobile confirmed last week) but you will need a new 4G sim card and obviously a new 4G price plan for it to work.

I think you are confusing that the Optimus 3D is considered 4G ready in the US as they stupidly refer to HSDPA as 4G over there, which over here is 3.5G. There are no 4G ready phones over here yet as the EE network uses a different frequency to what current phones support for LTE (what powers 4G). They will require phones specifically adapted to their network and so no doubt they will be priced accordingly.
I figure the point is moot anyway as the poor speeds on T-Mobile aren't due to limitations to do with 3.5G, they deliberately throttle your speeds. That leads to be to believe that the related cost to actually get a decent speeds on their 4G network will be pretty high.
Its for this reason I am not bothered about 4G yet. For general web browsing the 1Mbit I get on 3.5G is sufficient, if I want any faster I can use WiFi. If I really REALLY needed more speed I would switch to Three which would get a huge speed boost without needing to buy a new phone. I only stick with T-Mobile because their call/text packages are good value and their coverage is excellent, which is more important than uber speed browsing to me.
That's 4G ready as in EE's 4G band will be in the 1800 Mhz range and that's one of the ranges that the O3D is capable of receiving. That was confirmed to me by T-Mobile UK.
I would expect that EE's 4G offering will come at a premium (at least for about a year until the other networks can provide 4G) but a work colleague popped into a new EE shop and they told him that an unlimited data plan would only be about £5 over and above a current 3G unlimited data.
To me, that sounds pretty good...

I'm an an O2 unlimited data plan and I'll keep it going when 4g gets rolled out. I plan to pay no extra charges, same way I tether for free.
