[Q] NFC does not work - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

Hello,
I have a stock rooted Blaze 4G. In the Settings, I make sure that NFC is enabled, but it does not seem to work. I downloaded a bunch of NFC apps, and none of them could pick up any RFID tags (e.g., parking meters, work badge, US passport, etc). The battery states that it has NFC.
After I rooted my phone, I got rid of a lot of T-Mobile bloatware, so I am wondering whether I could delete something that would affect NFC.
I do not know if it is a software or hardware bug and whether this is a bug at all, so I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thank you.

im running tweaked 1.6 and nfc works for me... you ha e to enable in settings and use an app but i can send bookmarks and contacts and data between phones at least.. i havent found any tags to scan yet...
if youre thinking that you might have dumped some apps that you need, i would reccomend flashing tweaked, it is unbloated and smooth....

Thanks, I will try Tweaked 1.6.

Who has actually used their NFC for anything...?

im buying a sheet of stickers off ebay and i wanna use them to rick-roll unsuspecting by sticking them on things that have scan codes...lol

I tried Tweaked v1.6, and the NFC still did not work I could still try to flash the stock ROM, but I really doubt it would work either. I guess it is a hardware defect, and unfortunately, I cannot bring it back to T-mobile as I left them a while ago. I do not really use NFC often (apart from SF parking meters), but it is nice to have a fully functioning phone.

nfc on android phones only works with a frequency of 13.56 mhz so perhaps the tags you are scanning are on a dif frequency

The US passport works on 13.56 MHz frequency, but my phone cannot pick it up. Parking meters clearly say NFC, and my phone cannot pick them up either, so I have to enter the long number manually.

my phone doesnt even have NFC

my battery says near field communication on it, and the option to turn it on is in wireless and network settings... did you by any chance change your battery?
i have deffinately sent stuff between phones, but havent found a tag to scan yet...

Yes, the battery is stock, and it says Near Field Communication. I have not tried to use it to communicate between phones, but that is not what I would use it for on a daily basis anyway.

to my understanding the phone does in fact have NFC but it is disabled. Who knows when it will be enabled via official software/firmware updates.
so just pretend it does not have NFC, as, it doesn't.. yet..
Devs are implementing the ability to turn nfc on and off in custom roms. Custom roms with this will have the setting. In menu settings wireless and networks. The cm7 rom has this

If the Rogers version has it enabled, how hard would it be to enable it on AT&T's based on the Rogers version?
I am using BoneSTOCKeteer rom by playin4sheezy on my AT&T version, and you can enable/disable NFC. I didnt do any more than check to see if it could be done though.

Yeah that one is based off of the Rogers ROM. I've already tested the NFC feature and it works fine so it should work for you guys too if you're using BoneStocketeer

how did you test it?
On my Rogers phone, I saw the option to turn it on so I did. Never really tested it until one day my phone kept beeping. I looked at it and it scanned something. I realized it was scanning the chip on my credit card since I put my phone on top of my wallet.
I've turned it off since. I don't really know what else I can scan at this point.
The Galaxy Nexus demos of ICS showed NFC being used between those phones. I am sure this will become active for us Yanks once the official ICS firmware becomes available, if you are stock that is.

rom that can switch 2g/3g automatically?

Hello. I'm looking for a custom rom which could manage to switch back and forth between 2g and 3g either manually or preferably, automatically. I had a milestone with cyanogenmod before my skyrocket and I loved the feature it had where you could set the phone to connect using 2g exclusively while the screen was off and switch to 3g when you unlocked the screen.
thanks!

thanks for such a quick response. I tried juicedefender once and it had a few issues when switching switching connectivity back on. sometimes it went for hours without any notification for emails and such after setting it to check for emails after certain amount of time. also, I can't really buy the paid version. does the free version has this functionality? I don't want to switch off the data connection entirely, which is what I remember juice defender doing. I just want to switch to 2G.

NFC disabled SGH-i727 (ATT) - How to enable

I noticed on GSM ARENA the specs for the Skyrocket phone say it has NFC.
So I got really excited, but then when I tried to use it, I realized it does not, in fact work.
ATT apparently marked it as not-present and disabled it. (Two problems.)
Anyhow, I found out how to enable it, and I wrote a quick Android App to verify it is present.
I did take a chance and used the Note hack as the model numbers were very close to being the same. I theorized the hardware was mostly the same, excepting the screen.
I searched and apparently nobody has announced doing this before.
The thread used was here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545751
The tool to test NFC on Skyrocket SGH-i727 is here.
Its already enabled on the ICS leaks we have.

Its on the battery itself. If you remove the sticker on the battery you can see the antenna

I read ICS has a bug where it can't initialize NFC tags.
This candhelp people on 3.x get their NFC working.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
NFC in the Skyrocket is on a chip inside the unit itself. Only the antenna for the NFC chip is located on the battery.
NFC was disables by AT&T in stock GB builds, however some custom ROMS, such as Alien, enabled it.
The 4.0X ICS releases (leaks) for the skyrocket have fully functioning NFC capabilities.
Specific phones did (or maybe) still do have an NFC bug (Verizon's Nexus) phone couldn't handle certain types of formatted tags, but the SkyRocket hasn't had this or any other problem NFC related that I am aware of.
I'm writing an NFC application.
I'll plan to upgrade to Alien in the near future. Sounds like fun.
Just the thought of putting a tag on the nightstand, in the car, ... I can do so much with it, but none the apps out there (even Samsung TecTiles App and NFC Task Launcher) do what I want to do. Not that I can run TecTiles on my phone version.
I'm currently running SKY ICS 4.2F-3B with the UCLE2 radio.
I use NFC tags in the car, at work and at home with an app called NFC Task Launcher.

It's very close range by the nature of NFC itself. Depending on if you have a case on the phone, and which case it is, you might need to actually hold the phone to the tag and keep it there for a second. Stock NFC in the skyrocket, regardless of which ROM, gives an audible tone when reading a tag. A file is floating around XDA that will disable the tone, but it is nice to know if the tag was read correct or if there was an error.

Are you using apps that require secure settings (secure eliment)? If so, it has nothing to do with NFC, it has to do with the app.

Wifi wonkiness and maybe smartactions?(solved)

So at first wifi seemed good, range is better than my epic, speeds good as well(throughput anyways) but I've noticed a lot of disconnecting lately and having to toggle my wifi on and off to connect a lot. I'm not sure on this next part but I believe it all started when enable smartaction features. I tried toggling, dhcp versus auto, no difference. I'm thinking that maybe there is a cache somewhere in the driver that is not clearing properly creating network handshake issues, but that is a speculated thought based on very little knowledge. A little extra info, I have experienced this on both my dual band wifi N netgear at home, and a single band wifi G netgear at work, I'm stock no root(yet). I am semi noob when it comes to networking but I do have enough knowledge to setup securely a wifi network and do basic troubleshooting. Any thoughts on this? I am gonna try disabling all smartactions as well and see what fruitation arrives from that.

lol, don't think it was necessary to go to those lengths... Just disable any SmartActions is the suggestion.
I have a few night time / low battery smart actions - and I guess I never really use wifi during those periods. During the day when I do use wifi and the smart actions are not in use, I don't have any wifi issues.
Interesting theory for sure, especially since it is a new and perhaps only partially tested Motorola product. Would be nice if this is a workaround, at least there's something to look into .
I don't think it has anything to do with Smartactions....the couple of times I've experienced Wi-fi disconnects I never had any of those running. It seems to be more of a seemingly distance/threshold sort of thing to me.

I've never really experienced any disconnects that I couldn't attribute to distance...
Some here have said that wifi disconnects within feet of the router and VERY frequently. I can't say I've ever experienced that on this device...
My wifi issues were definately not range based, but I have yet to experience the issues I was having before since disabling the smart actions, but I will play around with renabling when I have some time and see if I can narrow it down, I have a feeling it was the sleep profile and I'm pretty sure I left it at defaults other than times.

Through the STOCK phone dialer put in ##106157#. It will reset a lot of wonkiness and do another hands free activation, updating ports, PRL, etc on a level more in-depth than the System Updates option.

Not related to smart actions, but maddening nonetheless...
Go to "Settings" --> "Wifi" --> "Menu" (Bottom right) --> "Advanced" --> "Show Reminders" - uncheck.

You will need a device that has the radio ship built in and if I remember right only HTC and some Sony devices have this chip still.

Then if it is the EU version (US version doesnt have the hardware) Then just grab a fm radio app and hook up some headphones (they are used as antenna) and you should be good to go.
While it's not impossible to cram an AM radio in a phone, getting good reception requires the radio/phone to be stationary in a specific position. Cell phones typically don't remain stationary. So manufacturers, even the few that still put FM radio, simply don't bother. No app can turn on what doesn't exist.
I don't know how it's done in the Philippines (I assume that's where you are - good luck by the way), but in the US, severe weather emergency alerts can be broadcast through regular cellular telephony. Of course, that assumes the broadcast towers are still standing...
Your best bet is to buy a small portable radio. Something that people listen to sports on, or even one of those emergency ones that you can crank to charge up. But it wouldn't surprise me if these are hard to find, considering what's about to hit your islands.
