Problem with POWER button ( + hardbrick ? ) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I will expose my problem (I searched but found no similar problem): The POWER button of my NS started to malfunction, then not at all.
Rather handyman, I disassembled my NS and tested the button, which, indeed, is constantly conducting, even without pressing the button.
I reassemble all with the idea to flash a ROM with the option to wake up by the keys volume + / -, but when I return the battery, nothing happens, which I press the button or not. Can not display anything( bootloader, download mode, recovery, etc.. ), not even a backlit black screen (which would be a start ...)
I checked several times the correct connection of the screen connector and others connectors, without success.
I did turn around, thank you in advance for you help me to clarify this issue.
Oh and also, I have the impression that the phone heats up when I put the battery and when I plug in the charger.
Thank you in advance to all those who take the trouble to read and those who help me!
PS : Sorry for my bad english... I'm french

Sorry, this post might be of no help to you. But there's other threads on here with this problem.

Thank you for your answer, but is it possible to boot my NS with Odin without bootloader and download?

I don't know much about Odin. I just tried to give you options that have worked for others. Sorry.

I am getting frustrated:/

3 days back i noticed that no matter how many times i press the power button on my HTC Touch Pro(Vodafone) the back light wont go off.If i keep on pressing it a power off message would appear asking me should i switch off my phone.By changing the power settings i had set it to Turn off the backlight after 30 secs(If not used).Which helped but the problem remains the same, after the backlight goes off it wont come back no matter how many times i press the power button:/.
It would only come back by sliding the Qwerty,as a result the Phone despite of the fact being turned off is using power and my phone dies off after 3 hours or so:S.I tried resetting it by Clearing the Storage(7 times) but it didn't help. After i which i opted to Hard reset it by holding down the Vol & Enter button and then pressing the rest using Stylus, but no matter how many times i try it the stupid Vodafone startup screen would appear and it would not(Tried it when the phone was on).the phone simply wont shut down,i tried by pulling off the batter, but once the battery is in it would start all by itself:/(In this way i cant hard reset the phone while it is off:/:/).How can i hard reset it??Somebody please help me!!!!
P.S:I have unlocked the phone so that i can use it in here.
Sounds really weird... maybe you can try executing task29 and flash a new rom....
but I'm not sure...

Do you mean HardSPL? You could try flashing a stock ROM to the device after putting it in bootloader (hold volume down and press reset, keep holding volume down until you get the tricolour screen).
This thread should really be in the 'General' section...
@Ben
Sorry mate i am a new user of this forum so didn't knew in which section should i place this thread, apologies for that.
From where would i find a stock ROM and how would i flash it(Procedure in detail)? And after flashing this stock ROM would i be able to restore everything using Sprite backup?
Thanks in advance!!
Follow this guide if it's your first time, and as long as you've already backed your data up (which you should have if you were doing a hard reset anyway) then you should be fine with Sprite.

Go to the HTC website and download an original ROM from their support page.
Oh and when flashing back to stock, make sure you flash stock rom/radio first, before you remove HardSPL (see guide one post above)

Unfortunately the ROM available on HTC's(3.27.4.3) website is not supported by my phone(The text field after verifying my S/N number prompted that the ROM is not suitable for my phone). What should i do now?Shall i take the risk and give it a go??My only concern is that i don't want to end up with a locked phone after a ROM flash:/
P.S:Apologies for bad grammar.
My phone is Vodafone HTC Touch Pro GSM(Unlocked)
just give it a go. and flash it. you cant really even brick these phones. so your not losing anything. even flash a rom without the sprite backup built in. you can always get the cab
Download rom from sunnysoft, there's no Serial number check in there.

I doubt it as he can still power off by holding the button down. Sounds like a software problem to me... Is it the same for you with regards to powering off?

[Q] Did I fully brick my phone?

I was updating to froyo using the Odin installer and for some reason it stalled. I waited 10 minutes and nothing happened, it was stuck on DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!! aaand being the genius that I am reset the Odin installer and phone...now I get nothing. The phone is completely unresponsive, no ! screen or anything.
Am I screwed?
edit: sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, please move to Q&A if a mod gets a chance.
close EVERYTHING, take everything out of your phone (sim, battery, and sd card.) then put the battery in but DONT TURN IT ON. have your usb cable ready. hold the two volume buttons down, and then plug in your usb cable to the phone (it should be plugged into your comp) WITHOUT PRESSING ANY POWER BUTTONS. if you get back into downloader mode, you are fine and can then restore using odin or the i click restore
hmmm, well try this take out the battery sim card and ex sd if u got one, open odin, put the battery back in and plug the usb in while holdin the volume buttons, aka download mode... sometimes it doesnt work the first time just try it a couple more...
I did this with my phone. If nothing comes on screen when you plug in the USB cable and entering recovery and download mode don't work, then take thye phone back to AT&T, they accepted my bricked phone back. Just act dumb like you have no clue why it's broken.
I have a similar issue, however I can still get into the downloader..but it just hangs when restoring on factoryfs.rfs....
Any suggestions on that?

Are you doing the method where you remove the battery first, hold the volume buttons (without power) and plug into USB? That *SHOULD* get you into download mode- if not, maybe check a different USB port.

Can you clarify? Did you successfully upgrade to froyo or incur and error somewhere in the process. When you say that "nothing happens" what exactly does that mean?
What does ODIN show when you try to upload?

Upgrade to Froyo successfully. Want to go back to 2.1 after using One Click Odin JF6 rom, it never ends. Following on from here, probe with OCD Froyo, eclair, odin and any rom could do to finish flashing. He stays in zImage and shows the status bar.
Any idea I can try?

Guys, good news! I recovered the phone and install Froyo. My error was that it came to how to download and then disconnect the USB and reconnected.
Joe K Captivate works perfect in Argentina because it uses the same bands as AT & T, send me a friend who lives in NYC, obviously unlocked.

Sensation screen not longer responding AT ALL after update - halp :(

Hello all,
First, I'm gonna say I'm very very very sorry if this issue has been seen and spoken about before, but I've used search and I couldn't find any problem like this one...
My Sensation was working perfectly, no touchscreen lag, all was fine. After latest update touchscreen, and every button except for power, completely died on me - response-wise. Phone turns on, but not a single button (except power one, like I said) is not working... I've seen threads about rooting, S-Off-ing device etc, but major problem is I can't get into USB debug so I'm kinda out of (known) options
Tried factory reset, no help.
My idea of problem is that updated ROM is the problem, and if I somehow manage to flash stock ROM I would be good to go. But with all those S-Off/On, root, BRICKING issues, I wouldn't want to risk it
Thanks for any help you provide in advance, and I must say sorry again if this problem was answered before - I couldn't find it with search...
Update
If I were you I would exchange the phone and run the update again. It sounds like a freak accident to me. As for myself I've noticed a major improvement in performance since the update, to disregard it would be detrimental.

Galaxy S2 not booting to recovery or download mode

I am a novice. Please excuse if my forum etiquette is not upto the mark
Issues:
1. Phone not booting into recovery or download mode
2. USB Jig not working as well.
3. When turning on from power off, skips Samsung boot screen as well as ROM boot animation and directly opens home screen.
Background:
Followed instructions on this thread to get rid of yellow triangle (As far as I know, followed instructions to the dot) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
Ever since, I face the three issues listed above.

Thanks for your response, Aramil:
I've tried multiple times to:
1. Boot to recovery mode - Black screen, only the two soft buttons light up.
2. Boot to download mode - Black screen, only the two soft buttons light up.
3. Turn off phone and connect USB Jig - No response.
4. Removed battery and then replaced it while simultaneously pressing volume down+middle key+power on - No Response.
SOLVED!!
Alrighty. I solved it myself!!
After more than a week of very limited help from members, I stumbled upon the solution to this issue.
The problem was with the bootloader. I flashed a stock bootloader, and all my issues were fixed!!
Thanks to those who attempted to help!!

no recovery or download modes and irregular bootup
I have this trouble also and think it is a bootloader problem. Rinuvimal says problem solved by flashing a stock bootloader. How is that done please?
My problem is:
1. I think it started when I bought a USB jig. To use this I needed to flash an old bootloader which I did through Odin.
2. Now I cannot access CWM by using up volume, home and power buttons. Nor can I access download mode using down volume, home and power.
3. Inserting the usb jig does not now load the download mode screen.
4.From off, when I press power, it does not go through usual boot process (nothing showing on screen) but after the soft key lights come on I seem to have booted up and can then use phone as normal.
My settings show Android 4.0.3, Baseband Version i9100BVKJ4, Kernel version i9100XXLP6-CL72050 and Build number lidroid-resurrection remix ics 9.4 black edition by westcrip XXLPH.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem please?

Soft Brick, Read Soft Brick Threads

I've read all the soft brick threads I could get my hands on. If I missed something, I'm sorry for that in advanced.
Symptoms: When power button held down, "Samsung" appears in white, then switches to the blue glowing "Samsung" won't turn off unless I pull the battery. I cannot access the download menu.
What the [email protected]%$ did I do?: I was following the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28350575&postcount=1 and I finished step 6 and started step 7. On step 7 it wiped the data but froze on the cache. After 2 hours of waiting for it to clear I tried a hard reset and hear I am.
Any ideas to try and fix this? Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Ok but what version?
I am only aware of one version of CWM that works correctly and that's 5.8.1.3. Lots of recoveries seem to have issues wiping the cache which results in soft brick issues.
Follow these steps:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/touch-clockworkmod-recovery-for-rogers-and-att-skyrocket-sgh-i727/
Then try wiping your cache again, and reboot. If all is well, then re-try the steps to flash Embryo.
Power button isn't stuck.
Sorry, I couldn't access and so don't know what version of cwm but that did look familiar. Was trying Touch Recovery. I'll follow the steps on the link.
That fixed it perfectly. Thank you for your assistance.
Any idea why it wouldn't let me go into the download menu before?

Great, good to hear it's sorted out.
By download menu are you referring to Download mode used with Odin, or recovery menu?
The phone can be finicky with getting into recovery sometimes, I find this exact sequence of steps to always work:
Hold down vol+ and vol-
Hold down power
Wait for phone to vibrate once every 2 seconds
Release power, continue holding vol+ and vol-
Recovery should load.
Otherwise, I have no idea.

Edit: How did you get into download mode to flash touch CWM 5.8.1.3 if download mode wasn't working? It sounded to me like the phone was bootlooping/locking up due to cache issues. As far as I know download mode can only be accessed starting from a state of OFF and not mid boot if that's what you were trying?

I've learned quite a bit just by reading development threads for various roms and trying them out, and reading the Q&A forum to see what issues people are having. But there is a lot to learn, I haven't tried any development as of yet..
For the most part just follow steps in the ROM threads verbatim and you should not have too many issues, now that you have a working recovery that is.
Yea, I should do some more reading on here. I love learning this new stuff anyway. I've gotta get to work but thank you for your help. let me know if there are any threads that you found particularly helpful besides the basics. Good night.
