Wiring Hotspots without rooting - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have successfully enabled my wifi hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy Prevail with service through Boost Mobile. My phone is not rooted and I didn't signup for the additional service. I am using Foxfi and it works perfectly. I even have the latest version with their addon.

How can I make my phone think it's on a specific WiFi network?

I want to be able to use the verizon fios mobile remote while I'm not at home. To use it, you have to be on the same wifi network as the tv. I want to mess with the tv while I'm not at home. Would there be any way to make my phone think I'm in the wifi network at home while I'm actually on mobile data?

You could probably setup a VPN to connect your phone to the home network from anywhere you have internet access

What would i need to setup a VPN?

Afaik if your router can run ddwrt you can setup openvpn on it. You would also need to install openvpn on your phone though which requires root

Yeah my phone is rooted, but how hard would it be to install openVPN on the router?

tethering market apps on ATT ?

I have a tethering app i sideloaded and have been using for a while nicely. Out of curiosity though i look again through the market to see what tethering apps are out and about. now EVERY one of them says not compatible with my "att" nexus s.
Does anyone know if they are TRULY not compatible or is it more a disclaimer they are putting on the app since att doesnt allow tethering?
I am on stock rooted 2.3.4

Click to collapse
If your rooted, market enabler and spoof a provider that does allow tethering.
Remove sim and connect via wifi. Then it will show up in market

[Q] Wifi Tethering?

Well, I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile UNrooted. And I was wondering, do I have to root to wifi tether? I heard that you need to root for a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S, but what about:
Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile (Not Rooted)
wifi tether as in mobile hotspot? nope, you should be able to do it without root ^_^

Alright, I'll try it.
T-mobile can add wireless hotspot to your phone for an extra $15/month. You could also tether with USB cable via pdanet. Those options would not require root.

A program that you may want to look into is open garden. Its fee in the market. It will turn you're phone into a wireless hotspot. You're phone does need to be rooted in order to use the program

(Q)Tether/hotspot

I don't have hotspot and tether on my contract, is there a ROM that will allow this? On my other phone (T-Mobile) they could detect if you were using tether or hotspot without paying and shut it down. Is this the case with Verizon as well?

Pretty much any custom ROM should have the native tether working fine without vzw knowing. Some ROMs use an app by Treve (I believe) but either way, yes you can tether.

wifi tether works with built in settings at least on xt 925 stock, make sure u either JUST try without security or just use number as security. I know it works both rooted and unrooted.
does that cause you to get the mobile broadband connect fee?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda app-developers app
no there s no fee , you are just sharing your own internet that you pay already for, depending where you are an dyour carrier, there may be a limit to how much you can use , maybe 4-5GB but that depends...:good:
