Ok I have upgraded all the way to JB but went back to ICS because of some issues with JB.
I do my backups to my external SD card and I know that the format is different with ICS.
My External SD card shows that it has data on it but I cant seem restore from it with my backup software.
Would be really nice to get to what I have on there.
Thanks.

The names of the paths to the Internal and External SD cards are different from ICS to JB. (And therefore, in reverse.)
JB puts the External SD in /emmc (or /storage/sdcard1) and the Internal SD in /sdcard (/storage/sdcard0)
I think these paths are swapped in ICS.
Change, in the options of your backup program (Titanium Backup?), the path of where backups are stored to the other path, and it should work.
(I had to do that to read a TiBu backup from ICS on JB.)

Does that app allow you to change where it stores or finds its backups?
It does. I use mybackup pro and never have had any issues restoring from the internal sd. Never have tried from an ext sd though. (Don't use one)

Hit menu button and go to options. The first box should ive backup location. I use backup pro myself and back up to external since its 32gb works great. The app defaults to internal but can be change to any directory.

Hi,
I have a g2x and i recently rooted it using superoneclick and i tried to back up using nvflash
however when i boot into recovery and try to install a zip or do anything with an sdcard, it says cant mount sdcard.
i ended up installing cyanogenmod 7 using rom manager.
but at the moment i cant do anything that involves using the sdcard because it cant mount.
any ideas on how to fix this?
thanks in advance
When you're in recovery, have you simply tried taking out the memory card then putting it back in?
Sometimes the simplest solutions work. It used to not mount my sd card too and just popping it out and back in made it read it.

It's the way they memory is partitioned. ~3 GB for the System and Apps, 5GB for other stuff. There's a workaround/fix for CM7 in the development forum (atleast I think there was) but I don't know if it works anymore.

Right now if I go to storage in settings I have my SD card then I have internal storage with 1.48 gigs and then I have additional storage /mnt/emmc which has 5.21 gigs. At the moment apps installed from the android market go to the internal storage and apps online go to the SD card but I can move them to the internal memory. It seems that at the moment the one place with the most memory can't be used so I'm guessing thats the partition your talking about
o there's no way of changing this partition?
And can you give me the link to that? Thanks
Yaay got the SD card working in recovery it worked taking it out and putting it in again

You're right, I don't believe it can be used (natively for apps atleast, you can always move media and files there). Unless you mount that internal partition to be the external SD card and do a Move to SD on the apps (both are settings in Android/CM7 somewhere) there's not much else you can do. The problem is that some apps don't work on the SD, of course you could keep those on the system partition.
Sorry if my replies are starting to get confusing, it's late here.
I use link2sd which creates a mount point script that uses the extra partition on external sdcard. I used minitool partitioned to create a 10gb ext4 on my 32gb class 10( I'm an app junkie lol). Most if not all apps/games moved with link2sd work flawlessly, I'm happy with it

thanks i think i managed to get it! i found the settings i think you're talking about in the cyanogenmod settings and managed to switch the sdcard and additional storage. now the 5 gigs appears as the sdcard and the actual external microsd appears as the additional storage
i guess thats the best im gonna get
thanks a lot!!

ya i thought i had everything working but now for some reason, my phone says it cant mount the system. any ideas why?
OK, I am going from an 8gb sd card to a 16gb, but before I do I need to know if it will break root or if I just need to make the new one a goldcard as well or what in general. I searched for switching sd cards in the forum but it didn't give results so I'm asking here.

the ONLY reason a goldcard is needed is for downgrading firmware. ROOT is WITHIN the OS and has NOTHING to do with the SDCard. you can freely swap sdcards at will

If you change your SD card nothing will happen except that you will loose your apps and photos in there. Root access has nothing to do with your SD card. Make a copy of the files and folders you want to preserve in your pc and then copy then back in your new SD card....

Ok, so a follow-up to that, and this may be a noob question but... Is there anything on the SD card that I have to have? I usually move ROM backups off the card to a computer, but lots if apps seem to make a folder in my SD card. As a rule, am I better off keeping apps in the phone memory if available? My SD cd card seems to be full of cr*p that i don't think I need but am afraid to delete.

Nahh dont copy anything...just the backup and the titanium backup folder...that will do. With those folders you can restore all your missing apps with data...and have a backup of your rom just in case!! Is good to tidy up from time to time!

Thank you all. I moved all of my apps back to the phone. I had already culled many that I didn't use when I rooted and flashed a ROM last week. I made new backups and pulled them off the sd card for safe keeping and then erased the SD card. I put music and ringtones back and now I have lots of space and everything still works. Guess all of those other files were just clutter. Thanks again.

I rarely have problems with apps on the SD. Maybe one or two out of 100.
I was wondering the best way to clean this up. I have no internal space left. thanks

Just buy a class 10 memory card and move apps to that card.
Because it is class 10 the transfer rate of files will be much faster

Had the same issue. I am assuming you are familiar with titanium backup for apps and you know how to make a nandroid backup of your current setup from cwm.
Use the batch feature in titanium and backup your user apps to your SD card. Remove your sd card. Then boot into recovery and format everything including emmc. This applies to 2.3 Roms only. Plug in your sd card complete with the rom you want to use. Reinstall your favorite 2.3 based rom and restore your user apps.
If you need help, let me know. I hope you find this helpful.
After installing CM9-RC2, my backups no longer work in CWM. It keeps insisting that my SD card free space is 0MB, which is definitely not true. I have a 16GB card and there is a lot of free space on it. Has anyone else experienced this?

There are some issues with the SD Card under CM9 (formatting over USB corrupts the FS, slow transfer speeds and possible corruption over USB, and if you try to format the SD Card using CM9, it will format the eMMC instead).
If you have a way to directly connect your SD Card to your PC without using the phone, back up any files the PC can read and format it directly with SD Formatter.
hmmmm, I don't have a microsd adapter to use that reformat tool. However, I'm not sure this is the only issue. I fear that CWM is trying to use /mnt/sdcard which seems to be broken in CM9. My /mnt/sdcard points to nothing. However, /emmc points to the actual internal storage and /emmc/external_sd points to my sdcard. In fact, there is only one file on my external_sd. It is /emmc/clockworkmod/backup where all of my CWM backups are. Also, if I take the external SD card out of the phone, CWM complains that it can't find any SD card and will not backup or restore anything.
i wonder if this is the same issue: http://0xfeedface.org/blog/lattera/2012-06-04/installing-cm9-encrypted-android-tablet

I highly recommend twrp 2.20 recovery to do the backups. You install the recovery using goo manager from the market. The with haptic button install open script recovery. This is much more reliable no matter how many times you flash.

And TWRP is way faster than cwm, it only took 157 SECONDS to backup 1.3Gig of data compared to about 15 minutes for cwm!

Hello Im having a very serious issue with my phone. I cant move apps to my SD Card for some reason. my phone is rooted and i tried using app2usb or whatever its called but still no luck i know my phone can read the SD because i have songs on it and my music player can play the songs on my SD but i just dont understand why its not letting me transfer apps nor letting me install apps into it. PLEASE HELP!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4g from tmobile with custom rom, Cynogen Mod 9 ICS. I also have a 8gb SD card
I have also tried deleting smdl2tmp1.asec but i cant find that in my phone nor my SD Card
Try ZDbox to move your apps to sd card
I personally use App2SD but I think for custom ROMs, ZDbox is more reliable

I have the same problem like you, then I backup all my data in sdcard saved in computer and use minitool partition to format ext2 and main partition. Now copy data to sd card (main partition) again. Next step you use your recovery tool as CWM (your device have been rooted) to restore. I have fixed that problem.
