Straight talk service? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys, im seriously thinking about switching my service from at&t over to straight talk. I can save about 100-200 dollars a month doing so!!!! I was on the straight talk website, and they sale sims for my at&t device! I was not aware of this until today! Upon looking around on the site, i noticed that their sgs2 is hspa+ capable, so is that to mean i would basically b on the same speeds im on now? Because i dont have lte in my area yet. At this point.....i would b a fool by not switching! So my questions are.......has anyone switched over yet? How is the service? And is it as easy as switching the sim, and purchasing a unlimited card? Any replys would b very appreciated! Thanks guys!

Yes it's simple, just order a sim card and port your number over, you may have to change APN settings for data. One thing to be aware of with ST is their "unlimited" data caps. From what I've read, it's around 2gb per month, but no-one really knows a definite number. If you continually go over this, your service will be deactivated and you will lose your number and any remaining time. Also ST customer service is horrendous. And yes it runs off of the same post paid AT&T towers.

There's an in-depth thread over in the galaxy nexus forum about this... But some folks were able to get higher than 2GB by removing the proxy in the straight talk apn. But YMMV.

I'm on straighttalk with my onex. Pretty easy to setup. I had the straight talk mini sim originally. Just cut it down to micro sim size, put it in my phone, changed apn settings, and I was ready to go. Fastest speed I have ever register at was about 7.5 mbps hspa+. I got the phone 2 weeks 3 days ago and I have already used about 1.8 gb of data, plus the data I had previously used on my old phone. I haven't got any messages from ST yet and by the way my apn proxy hasn't been removed. But overall I'm thoroughly satisfied. Pretty good coverage for my area, except for a half mile circle around my work place( where I spend most of my time.)

here you go. read the OP's first 3 posts and then just read through the thread, search for relevant items, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
with regards to the proxy, when you get your SIM from ST, you will have to enter in the APN on your phone just like it says with the ST manual. All you do is fill out all the APN data just like it says but leave the proxy blank. IIRC, this is all you have to do to keep them from blocking your streaming or keeping them from knowing your data usage...but, YMMV!
EDIT: also keep in mind that some of this info might have changed, I was following this thread religiously until a few months ago when I sold my GN and haven't read it much since then.

This is completely and utterly wrong! They can't compare LTE customers to HSPA in terms of data usage. Verizon has had LTE network for a year with 180 million americans blanketed, tons of LTE devices, and they've never bothered their LTE with crap like that. I've used 80GB at one point, no issues. They actually prefer their customers getting on LTE and offloading their EvDO network.
I'm at about 3.5Gb on my Skyrocket, so far so good, but then again, I only have HSPA+...

A phone call is all it takes to get unlimited back.
I found a work around that you can test to see if it works on your device. I too was throttled down to 100k after receiving the texts. I now am getting HPSA speeds...better than 100k...so I'm getting around 2-7 mbps..which will be sufficient til the end of my billing cycle.
Got the message from AT&T as well. The problem that I have I can't check how much data I've used so far. I moved from my Infuse to the Skyrocket, login to the AT&T website and I am sitting @ 2 GB. This is just ridiculous. When I had the Infuse, I was burning anywhere from 12 to 14 GB per month and AT&T never sent me any messages.
2745.65 of 10238976 used
This is what it shows in the AT&T website. I don't think I will ever be close to that number, but come on, 2 GB. This is a joke.
PS. I am still using their LTE network though, I am just wanna see if they really will throttle my speed.

Hey opencipher, what is the work around for anyone that has been throttled?. I am afraid that I am getting close to the 5GB limit and don't want to have 100kb connections. In my area HSPA+ connections are pretty good so I wouldn't mind if I can switch back while throttled.
Thanks!!
haven't seen many of you experiencing the issue.
att has an app that will auto connect you to am att wifi hotspot if one its avail. I use it to also check my usage.
this is more of an annoyance than anything, luckily I have a vzw charge a well, with unlimited data and unlimited tether/hotspot. glad I jumped on that!

Change the APN. Go to Settings. Wireless Networks. Mobile Settings. Access Point Names
Click on the Settings button and add a New APN.
Name it whatever. I used the settings from another thread and named it ATT HSPA+
APN: Phone
APN Type: Internet.
Left everything else blank. You won't get MMS but you have to create another APN for that, but even doing that I still can't send/receive MMS. But, I'm willing to sacrifice that for the speeds until the end of my cycle when I switch back to the normal ATT APN.
Now, here is the weird part and it takes some trial and error. When I switch to the new APN, reboot, I have to call the phone and let it sit there for a few minutes. Also disable Juice Defender. Not sure if it has anything with Juice Defender cutting the radio on and off. After a few minutes it switches to the other APN and will not access the LTE APN at all. And for some reason I get normal HSPA speeds. You can mess around with it and see what happens.
Some times it would take about 15 minutes to see the speed change..sometimes it happens right away. Not sure why..but its working for me.

Switched from AT&T to Straight Talk!!!

For those of you who don't like shelling out the gobs of cash to AT&T...I have the link for you!
http://www.straighttalksim.com/
I received my AT&T sim in the mail from Straight Talk along with the new APN information...and voila...I'm getting the same (if not faster) download speeds than I was with AT&T. Actually, I've been strangely getting more bars than I was w/AT&T. Not sure why...since it's the same network. Anyways...this transformed my bill from $130 per month to $45 per month for unlimited talk, text and web. I don't work for Walmart or anything...I just wanted to share some savings info with those who are interested! When they say on the website "cut your phone bill in half" they're not kidding! I wonder how Wally World can get away with sending AT&T roms...offer the same service...for half the cost? I dunno...but I'm not complaining!
Now...I doubt you'd get 4G speeds....but I've never truly had 4G speeds...so I'm not missing anything.
Thinking about doing this just to activate the inspire I have laying around with a cracked screen. Its between this, and redpocket

What radio are you using? I think I need a new one, mine keeps switching between 3G and H.
Been thinking of doing the same thing as soon as my contract is up.. Any activation fees or anything like that? What'd they charge for the sim?

I have been using Straight Talk for 6months with a sim card from a Nokia E71. This is known as the old sim swap method. Works great roams and all. From everything I've researched this uses the AT&T postpaid network.
The new sim card program they have charges you $14.95 for the sim card, and they had free shipping. NO activation fees or anything else.
This is the best data speed I've gotten though it's not usually this good. I'm using the 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M radio

The word is if you keep it under 2gb a month and 170mb a day you should be good. Just use 3g watchdog and monitor it. I stream stuff all the time, just be aware of how much data you are using. I've had no problems though I've never exceeded the so called limits.

WOW! That's a lot of data! I would think they will have to come up with some limits if they are going to cut off service because you are using too much so called "unlimited" data. Guess we'll have to wait and see once this thing gets going full bore. If you can keep your usage to 2gb a month and 170mb a day then this is a great deal! If not I wouldn't risk it at this point..
A few months ago another carrier said unlimited data was unlimited but they could make changes if they saw fit for the network. And everyone thought it meant nothing then. Straight Talk says no media streaming and only download from their network. They could turn on you tomorrow too. I see nothing in writing about 2GB.

There are several of of these non-contract companies but not much chat about them. Thanks for starting the thread, op. ATT sucks because they don't have phone service in your area? No phone carrier has service everywhere. You never should have stayed with ATT in the first place if you didn't have service. And ATT has a 4G network, at least as much as T-mobile does and as the FCC now defines it. They also have LTE which is faster than Verizon's LTE. And what does your post have to do with Straight Talk?
I too have been thinking of going to ST. I don't go over 5gb. I wonder if that is still to much for them. I don't like att as much as the next person but I do have good signal and do get 4G in my area. Has anyone found anything about the 2gb?

[Q] Straight Talk and 3g for Sensation Help!

Hi all, I did a search and didn't get very far. Here's the deal I learned after buying my girlfriend and Tmobile Sensation 4G and putting it on a ST SIM(uses att service) that it doesn't have the 850mhz band that att uses for 3g. Is there any way possible to change the frequency to pick up atts 3g wether it be a radio/RILEY or a ROM that changes this. I don't think it is a hardware issue seeing as the galaxy s is able to change this setting easily. What I need to know is has anyone addressed this issue or found a work around? I am even willing to replace hardware if necessary. Maybe a Bell Canada radio/ril?? Currently we have Insert Coin ICS installed. Any help is appreciated! Thanks
Nope,
Maybe someone else will prove me wrong, but I don't believe there is any way to make a T-Mobile branded Sensation work on AT&T's 3G network. There were some rumors early on that this might be possible, but I don't think anyone has been able to make it happen.
There must be some way to access these network options to edit the frequency. If they can do it on some other phones maybe a Dev can get his hands on an RUU from the Canada Bell files and possibly find where this is hidden? There must be some way haha!
Plus 1 I want to know too just dropped tmob for changing contract and btw there changing everyone's April 5 th

Not great, not bad at all actually. Especially for the price.
People over on howardforums swear there are 100/mb/day or 2gb/month limits on data though. At which point they claim they either turn off your data or close your account altogether.
I use wifi most of the day so I don't care but your situation might be different. Tmobile prepaid is what I had before though. $60/month for 2gb @ 4G speed isn't bad.

The only problem I might have with them is , I'm scared they might just cancel my number completely or that i loose data completely. So would you recommend this or the t-mobile monthly $50? I'm paying 50 for my metro atm so I really don't want to pay more, I'll be glad with the same or a little bit less.

The thing is that on the $50 TMO plan you'll get 100mb of 4G and the rest will be 2G speed. Meaning that you'll struggle to play video like YouTube. That's why I recommended the $60 plan.

I didn't use nearly 2GB a month. More like 500MB.
Saved $15, service is the same..might as well.
No need for 50$ you get the same thing I just ordered simplemob simcards for 99 each and will have a bill of 80 vs 120 plus tax

They have sims for TMO or ATT network.
Thanks guys! I ordered her a SIM from straight Talk for TMO. Should be here Tuesday. Anybody know how their voice/data service is in Michigan? I am spoiled by having excellent data with VZW but definitely pay for it.... Will she have worse service than with her current ST ATT SIM? Hope it goes well and they let me swap SIMS and keep her number!

T-Mobile vs Straight Talk (AT&T)

Hi guys, just curious as to whether you think it would be a better option to go with straight talk using AT&T's network, or chance it with T-Mobile (unlocked phone). The thing is, I am not sure if this phone will receive data properly with T-Mobile, as I understand it, the frequencies are different.
So, do you guys think I should try to chance it?? Also, how does T-Mobile's HSPA+ compare to AT&T's?
HSPA+ on T-Mobile is fine, but you're not gonna get it with a one x. So... Go with straight talk.

Ok, thanks. I heard that T-Mobile is doing reforms to their network, but wasn't sure if it would apply to me in this case, and if they were ready or not.
I've been using straight talk for my last two phones, and the HOX. Service has been pretty good, no issues especially since they openly allow bringing your own phone. Data is almost always at H, with a few occasions where it drops to edge.

Straight Talk gave me the boot after using 1GB of data. The only good thing to come of it was being able to port my number to T-Mobile. I hate to say it, but Straight Talk is shady. Whatever you do, even if you can't understand what that [Mod Edit..please refrain from using racial slurs or commemts on the forums] hard working person, just trying to earn a living is saying, DON'T TELL THEM YOU WENT TO YOUTUBE! They cancel your account on the spot.
I'm using T-Mobile Monthly 4G now and all I see is EDGE in the city of Little Rock. I get a bar or two of 3G once I leave out to surrounding areas. No Root, No 3G/4G.

I did not use the proxy. It seems that AT&T reported that my usage was "excessive" (at 1gb?) and they gave me a phone call that was extremely distorted. I couldn't understand it at the time, so I called them up. In retrospect I would have ignored it.
Here is the message...
Hmm, seems like I'm going to have to be pretty careful on my ST account than.
I am getting a T-Mobile sim I ordered (before I knew it wouldn't work) in the mail today, ST sim comes tomorrow. Should I even try the T-Mobile one? Is there any chance at all I will get data?
Thanks for all the responses though guys!
EDIT" @ ackliph, it says you use Monthly4G with your One X in your sig? I used to use that for all my other phones, any luck?
EDIT 2: Nevermind, I see your other post. Do you think that has to do with service in your area or the phone not being able to receive that data band?
Damn bro, that sucks. Just order another sim and use a different email to set up account. Just an option i guess? My apn settings seem to b working so far. I dont watch much youtube. Maybe 1 vid a week or so. But ya, sorry u had that problem. What settings did u have set for your apn? Heres mine.....and all is well so far.

I bought the HOX after T-Mobile started turning on the 1900mhz data in the Seattle and surrounding areas. It doesn't seem to be officially deployed as the store associates can't confirm if it's active and stores also aren't advertising iPhone users.
SO it's mostly Edge service for now but in many areas I have been getting 3G and H signals and speedtest gets well over 8Mbps, not to be confused with 8mbps. More than enough for mobile use once they officially launched 1900 in the area.

You will get data. It'll just be EDGE. And I'm certain if you bought another SIM later they could switch them on the account.
As far as data, it's the band. My Galaxy Exhibit worked great. 4G and all. The HTC One X works great on AT&T/ST, but when you put in a T-Mobile SIM, welcome to EDGE. I think maybe T-Mobile is starting to open up more bands for the iPhone? Good luck... but T-Mobile is not as vast as AT&T so you might get frustrated if you travel.
@zounduser those look exactly like my settings. I may have had port 80 in the first Port section though. Oh, and be careful with that kennel.
Another thing to note about Monthly4G: they do not let you modify you're voice mail provider. A bit frustrating if you use Google Voice like me.

it looks like T-Mobile will likely be using their LTE spectrum to roll out its own LTE service
http://androidandme.com/2012/10/car...obile-combined-company-to-be-called-t-mobile/
from the comments:
"MetroPCS already has a LTE network on AWS spectrum, which is the same spectrum that T-Mobile plans to roll out LTE in 2013. It sounds like this merger will only accelerate T-Mobile’s network upgrade."

EDIT: however, I'm not sure how this will affect pre-paid on T-Mobile. Right now, there is no LTE on MVNO's and I'm sure that will likely remain the case for a while.

If you're using Straight Talk, I'd say the new AT&T prepaid is worth switching to

If you haven't heard, AT&T just enabled LTE on their pre-paid network. The plan is 2GB with unlimited talk/text for $60 flat. I just got it and I'm pretty damn glad that I decided to switch. I ported over hte number from Straight Talk. I got HSPA speeds on ST and downloaded at like 7mbps. Now, I can get 30mbps and maybe more. I have only tried a few speed tests. In my home, I only get like 14mbps, which is still manageable

why you you go on a limited plan? ST still has unlimited data. and its like 50 bucks. saving 10 dollars and unlimited data seem way better than getting my download faster. at the end you still get the download.
It sounds like the OP was interested in speed. I can add that ST's bizarro policy on data limit and their willingness to cancel a number for a violation of an unstated data limit makes ATT prepaid safer if you really have to keep your phone number.

Straight talk isn't really unlimited. If you go over 2gb, they will throttle your speed. I never went over 2gb though so that's why I went with a limited plan. I just prefer having the faster speeds. If I have an LTE phone, might as well get LTE

I wish the AT&T AIO was available nationwide. You get LTE up to 7 GB for $70 a month. I'm sick of 3G on ST
Thiw would be perfect for my uncle...quick question, when switching to go phone do you have to get one of their phones or could you use an existing one you already own? I went to their website and it said to purchase a phone or something like that to get started with the plan...

We always brought our own phones to AT&T Go-Phone without any issues before we switched to Straight Talk.
I think straight talk is still the best deal in town for an at&t phone. The hspa data speeds are great in most places and the price is very good for unlimited talk and text and I think they only allow 1.2 gb's of data but that's still a lot. It's about $48 with taxes and fees. My s4 is on it.

Is the coverage any different between pre-pay AT&T and post-pay AT&T?
Before moving to AT&T postpaid, I had a Galaxy S720C on ST with Verizon. Coverage was native towers only and no roaming (I knew that going in). VZW's pre-pay service doesn't include roaming either.
That was one reason I switched from ST (VZW) to AT&T post paid. And I went from 3 lines of service to 4 lines of service which made ST nearly $200/month for 3g non-roaming service. Otherwise, I had no complaints about the service from ST that they weren't able to fix.

I remember looking into it before I left ST. At that time, I think ST and AT&T were no longer working together. Now on the AT&T pre-paid side, I've never investigated to learn if there are any differences in the coverage. But again, I know that with Verizon, there is a difference and there are maps that show pre-pay and post pay coverage.
When you zoom in and reconfigure/refresh the maps you can see some differences.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/support/coverage-locator
http://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html
Those maps are so subject to interpretation that I'm not sure any conclusions can be drawn by looking at them. I'm not sure the providers want us to know either.

But hundreds of straight talk users have reported data caps and being throttled...from my understanding its nit an official data cap, so technically it doesnt exist...however for many users after going iver 2gb they become throttled...some even get terminated for going even higher, yet others can go through much much more and never be throttled...its a hit or miss I guess

Do you mind giving some more detail on the throttling? I was on ST before GoPhone and i never used over 2GB but I was wondering how it worked. What were your speeds before/after throttling? I'm guessing you were on the HSPA before, and maybe 2G after... was it AT&T or T-Mobile?
GoPhone seems to be a good plan so far for me. The LTE seems a lot more consistent than the HSPA I was getting through ST as far as speeds, AND constant connectivity. I haven't found any rough spots on the LTE so far, but I always found areas where the HSPA connection would fade in/out when I was on ST.

Well straight talk (AT&T) can be bullish*t sometimes. A few months ago I had a smartphone, can't remember which one honestly. Anyways, i sold it and because I had ordered another smartphone but while I was waiting for the new phone to arrive I was using an old flip phone. So I wasn't using any data at all for a couple of weeks. When I got the new phone and set up the apn and everything, my data speeds were super slow, 0.25 mbps max. I called straight talk to ask them what's up, they said that I was throttled because I was using too much data which wasn't true because I was using a flip phone for more than 2 weeks.
When they throttled you it's 0.25 mbps, they go hard on you. Besides lately my data has been very inconsistent (generally it's between 2-6mbps but it's so inconsistent, sometimes I wait 60s for tapatalk to load) and I live in Maryland where coverage is usually excellent. So now I'm going to switch to go phone this weekend and enjoy some LTE. I can't wait. In my opinion it is totally worth the extra 10+ bucks.
