4G Mobile Internet - General Questions and Answers

While watching the latest news on BBC it said about the UK beginning to introduce 4G Internet.
The 1st provider to have 4G handsets on the UK is Everything Everywhere (previously Orange and T-Mobile).
During speed tests on a standard 3G connection it has download speed of around 1mb/s, yet with 4G it had speeds of around 30mb/s!!
I was wondering what the whole of XDA thought of this. If there is any 4G users out there at the moment could you tell of your experiences with this as I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be speaking about this.

It's fast, but until more users start actually using the LTE network, the 30 mbps isn't a true measure.
Remember when at&t and Verizon started out hitting 60 and 70 mbps? But now its a lot slower because more and more users and devices came out?

Having seen this I'm very glad that I held off on upgrading my phone when my contract ran out. I just hope that EverythingEverywhere (what a cr4p name that is) provide an announcement soon on some decent 4G phones (not the iPhone 5).

When I first got att lte I was pulling 30 down now I'm down to 10 on average due to network congestion

So what your saying is your only getting 10mb/s yet at 1st you were getting 30mb/s.
As another member has said about network congestion how does this connection of 4G work compared to 3G. What is the difference apart from speed, etc...

What's the real deal with "4G"

I've heard everything. From you'll need a different Sim to get 4G speeds, you'll need to change your data plan, and at&t hasn't launched 4G yet. What's going on? I personal can't get speeds over 2.2 mbps and from what I've read nobody else can either. Whats the real deal here?

real deal is att just relabel their 3G as 4G!
on att map, it shows i got 4G coverage in bayarea, CA.
but speedtest is the same as my regular 3G phone (captivate)!
Heck Rochester NY my Captivate if faster than the "4G" speeds. I can get 3.3 down 1.2 up on average on the captivate. Inspire is around 2.2 and .2.

dirty secret of 4g
fake 4g vs real 4g
I was told by an att employee that they won't be launching the 4g until June. It will show up on your phone as 4g coverage but won't get the speed of it until June.
Anyone else read the title of this thread and think of "The Real Deal with Bill McNeil?"
Also, signs point to hspa+ not being turned on til some mystical future day.

I have 4G in Seattle.
I also was given a new Sim card, a bit different then the one I had for my Captivate.
I am getting anywhere from 2.5mb to 6mb DL.
The real deal is that AT&T (well all the carriers) lied to us and the newer speeds will be rolled out whenever they feel like it.
I don't know anyone who's in the prime 4G spots who gets decent speeds (without or without the patched HSUPA).
I like others on the forums have heard many mixed things about when they'll officially be rolling the faster speeds out but for the moment we all got duped.

I am in Baltimore (launched 4G market) and I get better speeds in the 3G areas then I do in the center of the 4G areas.
Kinda ****ed up!
Patience
O.k. here is the real deal... an actual answer to your question rather than simply posting my speeds.
4g is being rolled out in several phases. Lets tackle them one at a time.
First AT&T is releasing HSPDA+ as 4G... technically it is not 4g but since T-Mobile is advertising it that way, so is AT&T. This has 2 different upgrades to make it work. 1) They had to do a software upgrade to the transmitters on the cell towers. I believe that it is either all complete or close to complete. So technically they are using a 4g network for those transmissions. However that leads to the second step. 2) They need to upgrade the physical wires feeding the towers to handle the additional speeds. This is a much more massive process and a much slower roll out. This is called backhaul and is creeping out now, tower by tower. (T-Mobile is in the same boat, and they also do not have their backhaul anywhere near done.)
Second phase is to upgrade the entire system to LTE (a true 4g) This process is not supposed to start until summer and not be significantly built out until mid - late 2012. Verizon also does not have much of their LTE network built out, and don't even have their LTE phone on the market yet (the Thunderbolt).
I still work in an area with only Edge... a little patience and it will get to you. I can tell you that even without the HSPDA+ network running, it is still a ton faster than my Tilt2.

AT&T LTE Network Going Live This Sunday

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/att_lte_network_going_live_sunday
The cities included in this initial wave are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Although users in those metro areas will still have very few LTE devices to choose from. Unlike Verizon, which has multiple LTE handsets, AT&T has no phones compatible with the new network. AT&T launched a data stick and a portable hotspot for the LTE network last month. The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.
sweet im in San Antonio for a little while, now for AT&T to get some phones for me to use !!!
Now if they could hurry up and increase the HSPA+ speeds. I'm still only getting 3.5mb download and 1mb upload in downtown Dallas.... iPhone 3gs gets about the same download speed, although only half of the upload speed.
Come to the other side of the Metroplex. Downtown Fort Worth and I am getting 5-7mb down, 1.1-1.3 up. I can't wait for the Holiday with LTE. That will be SO sweet.

I know the Inspire is not a LTE phone, but just launching the network upgrade has helped me to see vastly improved data speeds. I also know the Speed test app is not accurate, but I have never seen it pull these kind of speeds, especially consistently.
Well, I would like if it came out in Madison soon... (and when AT&T has more LTE Android phones)
Ok I live an hour away from Houston. Do you think I would still be getting LTE? Also do we need a new sim card or anything or does it automaticly happends?

As mentioned, you would need a LTE phone first. But, being an hour away from Houston, I wouldn't run out and buy one when they become available. I live in the outskirt of Houston and HSPA+ is non existent at home. In Houston where I work, as posted, I am just now seeing the true benefit of HSPA+. Probably some bottlenecks from ongoing upgrades being freed up, maybe a little congestion as well.

Knowing how AT&T operates, I'd imagine they opened up more bandwidth to the land-based lines to the area first to make sure their LTE debut went well and you're just seeing some of that extra bandwidth.

I'm not as stupid as you. I know when I'm on wifi. Here is the proof.
Here are some from earlier today. The first two were indoors, a large metal building with offices above on the second floor. The first run was bad, only 2800kbps, but I did hit 4916kbps on the second. I then went outdoors and tested a lil slower than yesterday, but not by much, 6485-7767kbps. I know we can't put too much stock in the Speed Test app, but there is some consistency and I'm getting much higher runs than I had been. Also, it seems to be reading my wifi at home with some accuracy.

Then why do you make statements like LTE network is improving the throughout of a HSPA+ phone on the 3G stack?

Show me where I made that statement. I stated that since the LTE launch, my data speeds have suddenly increased and I'm finally seeing true hspa+, and that is a fact. I provided a couple of possible reasons for this, as someone else cited a possibility as well. I know what you saw. You saw the hosted by Comcast in the screenshot. Lol. Anybody with half a brain would know that there would have been a wifi icon in the status bar if I was on wifi. Next time you open your mouth, try not to put your foot in it. Your little signature says it all. Just because you are in a crummy area, doesn't mean it is like that everywheres.
Check my screenshot of prior tests and tell me if you see any improvement compared to yesterday and today. LOL.

I'm good. I just don't appreciate someone implying I'm either stupid or I'm a liar. It certainly isn't inconceivable that while AT&T was building the LTE network here in Houston, they were improving the backhaul for hspa+. Whatever the source of the improvement, I'm thrilled to see true hspa+ speeds. It is something I never expected to see with my Inspire.

I don't think T-Mobile has its (3g+) 4g network working correctly. Here in Alabama I average between 2 and 5Mbps. The only time I went over 5 was in Atlanta.
didn't even think about that. it must be based on where I am.
Yea here in new orleans I always see 5 or better but I'm still using my HD2 Sim never had a problem !!

Most of tmobiles antennas have been upgraded to allow 4g bandwidth. The problem is that the backend of each tower needs to be upgraded as well. Most towers have been run on 2 t1 lines before the 4g switch. They haven't upgraded all the modems yet or in your area there is only a limited speed for leased lines. The towers can vary from 50mbps connections down to 3. This depends on what your town has available. The highest your signal goes is about 100ft over your head. Once it hits the tower it's all land lines from there. So you count in data usage from other phones using that antenna and slow modem and you can see why you aren't reaching speeds like in Atlanta. Since Atlanta is a big city with a large infrastructure its easy to see that they would be the first to get the overhaul and they would get faster speeds since internet is cheaper due to competition.

4G sucks!!!!!

4.5mbps down in 4g in okc. While in small town outside of okc on hspa+ I get 8-10mbps down. What a joke ATT. Y'all are really sucking. Going to be looking at Verizon soon.

depending on your time and location; I've beaten my co-workers' iphone 4 and two iphone4s on speedtest.net's app. but you have to factor the load of the network stop putting blame.
two iphone4's on AT&T , one iphone4 on VZW. only the vzw iphone4 was matching closest to speeds like mine.
4g or 4g lte? Big Big difference if its one or the other. I average 3-5 megs down on 4g here in Conway. I've peaked at over 10 megs down a few times though. We haven't gotten lte upgrades on our towers yet but when we do I expect I'll see 20+ megs down at least!
In Philly,
depending on the day, the time, the location, whether I wear my socks, etc...I can get between 1 and 9 mbps down, 1-3 up.
In South Jersey at my folks (who live in the woods), I can get 4-5 down. 3 miles away out on the marsh, I get over 10.
LTE-long term evolution. Suuucks....actually its ATT.

I average 25 mbps down in dallas on ATT LTE. When i drove through OKC i was getting about 15 down. Having used Verizon, i hate their coverage and their service. If you dont get their LTE, their 3g is 1mbps tops. I dont understand why everyone bashes on ATT.
Edit:
And Verizon's LTE is about 12 average on a good day. Peak of 18, low of 5.
how can anyone complain about 4.5 mbps down on their phone ???
goodluck with verizon, if you dont get an LTE signal your download speed is going to be less than 1mbps.

so was I . I would get 1.8mbps at my house (on 3g) on sprint but anywhere else i was that was not 4G i would get 15kpbs to about 600kpbs. It was painful.
On the 4g network (hspa+) i usually get anywhere from 3 to 9 mb/s, but when i hit the 4g lte area in NYC i see speeds anywhere from 20 mb/s on the outskirts of the city to 50+ mb/s in the center of the city, also depends on how much load is on the network. If your on a custom gingerbread rom try using the V6 supercharger 3g booster script with script manager and try playing around with the options, i usually choose the known maxed out values for the best possible speeds

That's sad.
Important thing with Att is reliability. Verizon lte was out several times in a short period of time. And you get they're crap version of 3g as a backup if that. I'm assuming all the cdma iPhone users are clogging it.
AT&T gets hspa+ as a backup if anything happens to lte, although there aren't any reports of outages with it as of yet. Enhanced 3g is more than enough for me, i use my phone to browse the internet, not tether or stream.

[Q] Infuse on T-mobile speeds Chicago area

I just switch to tmobile after unlocking my infuse. All of my reading was saying that it would only run on Edge. The phone is currently running the latest beanstalk rom. I have seen connections on edge, 3g and H. I was trying to see if this was an error on the signal indicator on the rom or if something has changed with the towers and tmobiles network allowing higher speeds. All the past threads were from late 2011 or early 2012. I did run multiple speed tests and was showing anywhere from 5-9mb down and about 1.5mb up i tried about 5 local servers with in a 30 mile range of me. I am about 30miles outside of chicago.
Thanks,
Joe
That is very good news!
I don't know where you read that, but I knew that T-Mobile and AT&T use same technology on modem.
