[Q] Droid X needs Rooted (.621, 2.3.4) - General Questions and Answers

I have a guy @ work who has a Droid X (.621) w/ 2.3.4 and his one menu button is f'ed up... I can use an app called Softkeys to get him softkeys which will disable the button and return usability to the phone, but so far everything I'm reading says "No Go" on this process... Any help/suggestions?? He wants to limp the phone over till December 20th when his upgrade is in full swing to get the new Razr... Just tryin to help if possible!

My Droid 2 is also on .621, and since they Droid 2 and X were VERY similar phones, I'm going to guess their firmware updates are the same updates (since they're both by Motorola).
Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the .621 update is completely unrootable

I rooted the Droid 2 Global with little trouble, so maybe the X won't be too bad

to use softkeys you need to be rooted. follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823112 to root your phone if its on the .621 update. it might look daunting but it is really quite simple.

Holy crap time to root my droid 2, that post says people have reported it working on the D2

a few of us opted to go with the quirky phone and we are even getting an update from motorola soon (beta testing now) we may now have the source for it yet or figured out how to crack the bootloader but i think its time we have our own forum so if nothing else we can help each other with the quirks of this device.
I just an update for this device yesterday. Now has new junk that I don't want, and still isn't 2.3.

[Q] inspire bricked?

Hi All,
My little sister has an Inspire 4g. She's not very tech savvy and wouldn't know the difference between a rom and a skin. She is now on her 3rd inspire because of what sounds to me like a bricking problem. Any help in diagnosing this problem would be great. I searched the forum, but everything i found had to do with rom flashing.
Symptoms:
Phone won't power on unless battery is removed. Once it starts powering up, it gets to the HTC logo and freezes. She waited about 15 minutes and nothing would happen.
This happened over night one night, she woke up and couldn't power on.
It also happened 10 days later with a replacement phone while playing a game.
Any thoughts on the matter?
Thanks,
Ratkid2271

No, the phone was not rooted. She wouldn't know how to root. Everything is stock, except for a few apps she installed from the market place.
You say she's on now on phone #3. The symptoms you describe occurred on #3, or on all three phones?
In other words, has it been the same exact symptoms that caused her to go through two other phones?

Where are these phones coming from? ATT store, best buy, Costco?
I find it hard to believe you'd get 2 bad phones, and be fearing for a third, if the place you got them from are giving you new, not refurbished replacements. I'm not saying it isn't possible, just that it seems unlikely, especially with this phone, from this manufacturer.
Just for piece of mind, you may want to give a closer look at your what/how your sister is using/handling the phone, as well, just to make absolutely sure the problem is indeed a bad batch of phones.
That way if it does happen a third time, you can confidently articulate the symptoms to the place of return. After having to replace more than a couple phones, places might start to get a little more reluctant to keep doing replacements.

The original phone was purchased at an at&t store. The replacements came from the same store. They were NIB. The only thing that i can think of is that an OTA update was pushed (are they able to force the update, they prompt on my atrix) and she didn't let it finish. Would that brick the phone?

An failed OTA update could definitely brick a phone, and I have heard of Verizon or some carrier doing a "silent" update, but I don't think one has occurred for this phone yet, though an update is in the works from att.
Besides, I don't think they'd do a major, potentially brick-causing OTA anyways, after what happened with the bell/rogers captivate, or whatever it was, fiasco awhile back.
If the replacements were NIB and from att, that makes me even more skeptical that the cause was a bad batch of phones, especially if the replacements were spaced several days apart, as they get new shipments in, further decreasing the likelihood of 2 bad ones from the same batch.
Sent from my Inspire using XDA Premium
The whole issue of brick by ota update can easily and practically be solved by manufacturers of Android phones distributing desktop update software, similar to blackberry manager software. I know with the Samsung captivate, you can download the kies program to update. But it wasn't distributed with the phone so most users aren't going to be aware. I still yet have to be explained why this isn't in practice.

Do you know what you were doing when this happened?
I wish i actually saw the phone(s) in their bricked state. I feel like i could give better information to everyone. It seems like this is not a very common issue or i would have found at least one other post about it. I'm hoping it was just a fluke. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
XDA members rock!
I think she's going to have to take a good long look at what she has done with each phone...
- How has she been charging it?
- Did she download the same apps every time? What were they?
- Does she have any friends who have offered to help her tweak the settings or anything on the phone that may have inadvertently messed up something or tried to flash it?
- What sort of environment is it kept in?
- Protective case? Other accessories?
I think these need to be investigated to properly identify the cause. 3 phones dying that quickly may be indicative of a situation that she is creating without KNOWING that she is doing so.
If it bricks after failing a OTA update, and you still got it to boot I don't see why you couldn't run the RUU. Even then if it doesn't fully boot you shouldn't have a problem getting into the boot loader and using a pd98img to recover. It is really hard REALLY hard to completely brick this phone.

Is there anyway to get the phone back to 2.2 so I can perm root it?

My g/f got me a Motorola Photon and I rooted getting it ready for when more development comes as way of roms. She had 2.2 on hers and I asked when she updated it and she said she didn't. She got her phone last December so she had to update it to 2.3.3 right?
Anyways I heard sprint can rollback to 2.2 but they usually won't because they don't want people going back so they can root their phones.
I have a friend at Radioshack, do authorized retailers have the ability to rollback to 2.2?

i know. but im going INSANE!!!! after ever damn app i close the white screen with the green HTC comes up for like 1 min. then the loading of the home screen. i see the damn thing at least 200 times a day. im already looking towards a new phone all together... dealing with that for a few weeks gets irritating extremely fast.
It is really annoying. I am just going to wait for root, put CM7 on it, and give it to my Mom or something...
I hate to see the root issue keep getting sugar coated by people that already have root, including me. Just to be brutally honest, its been 2 and a half months since the Shift was updated and I really haven't seen much evidence of any one working on root. I do remember one tweet from about month ago mentioning the Shift but beyond that its been pretty quiet. I'm not saying its never going to happen, and for all I know someone is working diligently behind the scenes, all I'm saying is don't get too high of hopes that its going to happen soon..... Hopefully I'm wrong though.
If people were paying for this I would see more of a reason for people to ask all the time. I know I am new to these forums but even I get annoyed with it. I want my Shift rooted just as much as the next guy. It's free, get over it.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
Im sure people would pay for it. People have offered to donate phones and such plus once a device is rooted developers can create root only apps.
Most of the devs do it for the challenge tho... Not everything is about money. That said im sure anyone that came out with a perm root would get donations for doing so.

I need victims, er, um, I mean volunteers for testing

Hey, I need some testers to test my script to get back to 2.3.5 from the ICS leak.
These are the requirements:
1) You are on AT&T and have not bought your phone on the "grey" market, and still have an AT&T warranty.
2) You are not afraid to possibly brick your phone and are willing to get an exchange from AT&T's warranty department.
3) You will not blame me for possibly bricking your phone.
4) You will get praise when I release this to everyone and you will be thanked, and get thanks from everyone for testing this out.
I have a shell script that will work for both Linux and Mac, and a batch (.bat) file for the windows users.
Please ONLY reply if you want to test this, I will answer any questions you have about it in here as well. I will PM the DL link to the testers that have replied.
Now if you are still cool with this, please reply to this thread with the following info:
1) Which OS you use
2) That you are cool with testing this
I am looking for a few people from each OS to test this, so I will take the first 5 people who are on different OS' to give this a shot.
This is based on the patch files the Chinese/HK guys used to fxz back, and that others have verified works, for us. This does NOT use rsdlite.
I'm in but not until late night. 11pm est. I'm on ics. I use win7 or Ubuntu 12.04
If you haven't picked up enough volunteers by evening pick which one you would like me to test.

Hi, my name is Apex, and I'm an alcoholic.
Just kidding, but seriously...
My SG3 buy-back deal seems to have fallen on hard times, as I cannot seem to locate a blue (don't know about owning a white phone, seems weird to me) SG3, so I still have my A2 and my girlfirend's A2 that she's upgraded to from the OG Atrix, as well I have the ICS leak and can help out also if needed.
At this point, I don't care about bricking one of these phones, as I will be getting the SG3 -in blue, once located close within my residential geography- but until then, I shall be at your service, should you so require my testing.

Upgraded in October 2011 to this phone. Not refurbished. Version 1. Originally with 2.3.5. Updated to 2.3.6. had it rooted on 2.3.6 and have tried all the roms available. fxz to 2.3.5, updated to 2.3.6 and was running Romulus for awhile. From Romulus I flashed a backup of what i thought was 2.3.6 that I had and updated to the leak. Did not flash first time (android lying down with triangle) and flashed again and have been on it since. Have had no problems, battery, network or otherwise and it did NOT overclock (still at 1 gig). After the flash i had no root (tried to keep with ota rootkeeper). Could not root, even using the batch file. Had to remove bootstrapper files. Finally updated to newest drivers and gained root using batch file. Currently on the leak, running apex launcher and just installed BootMenu Manager. And i do have insurance.
Would love to help but hard bricked my **** trying to FXZ back from 2.3.6 to 2.3.5 a few hours ago...how stupid does that sound? [Q] Noob Questioner's

Hey guys. Just got this phone yesterday. Rooted and unlocked the bootloader last night. Love the phone! I wake up this morning to an OTA update request. I haven't installed any recovery yet. I'm on a 926 and the phone is running 4.1.2.... Honestly, I haven't figured out how to install a recovery yet. I don't want to brick this thing on day 2. I've done quite a bit of stuff and I realize now I need to get more educated before I screw something up. Heck I haven't even taken the time to understand the difference between the 925 and 926. So will it hurt anything taking the OTA?
It's not worth it to take it. Better off going with a custom rom.

So I guess I need to work on installing a custom recovery.. Just curious, what is wrong with the OTA update?

The OTA disables the hack that allows you to unlock the bootloader, but from everything I read if you have already unlocked the bootloader then you have nothing to worry about. It is still recommended to use a root keeper before taking the OTA update. The big advantage of the OTA is update radio drivers (better GPS, etc.)
OK, so, I'm rooted, unlocked, have rootkeeper installed and enabled, made a backup. If I take the OTA, can I get back to where I am now with my phone. I looked at each of the roms and they look OK.. Kinda happy with stock right now...

The stock is surprisingly okay from Motorola (once you freeze the Verizon bloatware), but I really enjoy having 4.2.2 (dashclock widget alone makes it worth the upgrade), customizable lockscreen (I was using WidgetLocker but it's never as smooth as built in), and the phablet UI with the quick settings panel. Have I tempted you enough to try a ROM? Also, stock icons and not the ugly Moto icons!

I've really only spent time with CM10.1 and have been very happy... a friend of mine has been going through the ROMs and he was excited about AOKP but now he's switching to Liquid can't remember why, some problems. From what I understand the CM ROM is likely to become official and that would be great so you can get the advantages of a fairly large eco system and constant development. Feel free to play around and try a ROM with halo (Pacman, Xenon, and some others seem to have it integrated) it looks really cool, but I'm not sure I would use it all the time.

So on Sunday, I made the mistake of "checking" to see if there was software update. There was. I did not want to update the phone, because I knew there was a good chance there was a root and unlock method out there for the current software version and wanted to investigate further. My only option was to "download now" or "download later" 12 hours.
12 hours came and went and I did not have the option to stop it. So I put it in WiFi mode and connected it to one of my WAPs that doesn't have internet access, which put a stop to the download. I did find a root/unlock method and went forward with it. Then the next question, what will happen when the download completes?
After rooting/unlocking the phone, I let the download complete, hoping that I didn't have to apply it. I got the option to postpone it once, but then it basically forced me. BegrudgingIy, I let it go before I could figure out a suitable root-keeper. Let me know what you use if you take the OTA and manage to keep root.
When it came back up after applying the patch, it seems I no longer have root access, but at least I have an unlocked bootloader so I can push ROMs if I want. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before Dan Rosenberg figures out a way around the new OTA patches. He has a reputation around here of being a Android ninja!
Can you get a custom recovery installed? You could flash a super user zip then.

If you flash a custom recovery through fastboot, you can then flash a super user zip using the custom recovery. No need to wait for a hack to the ota.

With an unlocked boot loader you have a lot of options, way to get the update from applying!
The craziest thing is that I'm really enjoying stock on the moto. Guys I have run every rom in the business. I've had the OG, the Droid X, NeXuS and a Razr, and now finally the RAZR HD.. I must say, I have had no lag, great connection and I've yet to find anything the phone has let me down on... I'm confused as to why this phone hasn't taken off!.. Have I forgotten to mention tha ti has an unlocked bootloader? Whats the deal?? I have not taken the OTA but I have gotten a message about it every 12 hours.. I know there is a way you can RSD back to the stock if you want it erikoink..
I may take the OTA.. If its better than this Stock Rom.. I'd be crazy not to
How do you like it erikoink????
I took the update without unrooting and used voodoo to restore it. I also had to install superuser then uninstalled it and supersu worked as normal.
No big changes with the update. The messages app doesn't display an incorrect unread message count which is nice.
I was a crack flasher with the gnex. But like you said, the phone just works. The only reason I unlocked my bootloader and rooted was to tinker with display resolution for an atrix lapdock.
I also don't know why the phone hasn't taken off. The lack of cases is irritating but I deal with it.
Been using my phone since March. Only important thing to remember is to restart the phone every few days or it looses some of its snap.
I decided to install "one power guard" but it's not really making that big of a difference. At first I was able to make it 2 days between charges and get almost 7 hours of screen on time. Now I can go a day and a half. I only have used a car charger three times and ALWAYS use the stock charger. Too risky.
This phone basically performs like my galaxy nexus but gets great battery life. I might get the note 3 in September but only if my battery life worsens.

How do you guys afford to upgrade so often?! Do you have family plans and steal upgrades?

I actually have been lucky on my upgrades. I had the Original Droid, I flashed sooooo many roms on it that it started getting buggy. Found a Droid X for 200 and snatched it up.. When my contract was up for the Orig Droid, I got the NeXus.. The volume on it was so bad that I couldn't stand it, so I went back to Verizon and traded it in on the Rezound. It was an AWESOME phone.. It has/had some GREAT devs.. I then found a Droid RAZR HD on craigslist because I will not upgrade and lose my unlimited data.. If I lose my unlimited on Verizon, it will be because they make me. I will then go to another provider as I am really pissed with VZW about this...
I freaking love this RAZR HD.. Might be my favorite phone so far.. Not sure why it doesn't have more Developers and ports....

Yes, 2 smartphones with grandfathered unlimited data, and 3 feature phones. Why on earth people with a similar setup would blow an upgrade on a feature phone is beyond me.
I'm sure this won't go on forever though.
My razr maxx hd was purchased at full retail but was then reimbursed because my phone at the time was damaged and did not have a comparable replacement available.
I find it completely hysterical that verizons new upgrade payment plan called edge is only for share everything plans. BS!

It's a love hate relationship. Verizon is very inconsistent with their CS. If I ever have a problem I basically prep myself to make 5 calls.
