In theory any $800 item that sees millions of purchases within the first week of release would make for a temporary surge.
In the long run, it won't change anything. You also have to wait and see what happens with HTC possibly trying to ban the import off the new iPhone.

Yes but the consumer pays tax on purchased goods and so of course it will help the economy if millions are sold.

if it sets any GDP it'll be how much less units it has sold against Android phones
the Wall Street news will probably read

I'm not quite sure just how a seven inch tablet can be confused with a full size ipad but according to a German court it can, and it means Apple can now go for a Europe wide ban on the Galaxy Tab 7.
Not sure how that would work in Britain where Samsung were found innocent of copying it, because the UK is under European law could this be a way for Apple to get the tablet banned even in a country where they lost the court case to do so?
http://www.reghardware.com/2012/07/24/samsung_galaxy_tab_7_faces_european_ban/
Dave
Countries are allowed to opt out of the ban and continue importing and selling them according to the article I read on CNN.
I came across a really good article that details all the different things that happened in the last year..
Personally I think this ban thing is so stupid.. just make the companies pay instead of banning the products.. Why make consumers pay while these companies make billions of dollars in profit.

Then you move our launch to Nov.4/12???? Again why, when Apple and Google can also have standard launch.
So after this...I'll pass and take my money else where.

You can blame your government not MS for this! They charged the high tax rates to import and they held the devices at customs. Yes MS should not of been in a situation that customs would hold things up but that's not to say this sort of thing does not happen with Google or Apple. Plus if you arguing about the price then saying Apple is better take a reality check there. I agree to a point about price it is over priced all round but then I think your paying for quality hardware (even though reviews have been down on RT itself).
Also USD and CAD though almost the same are not the same currency.
lol, its a bit ironic that one of your point is the launch date, and right below your post is an ad that says "Get ms surface on 10/26 at Toronto Eaton center"
The 519 is pretty lame though, unfortunately that's Canada for you. I believe when i bought the IPAD 3 when it first came out it as at that price point as well

That's actually a worse price, its not 'closer' at all.
$209 is a 5% increase over $199
$519 is only a 4% increase over $499
It seems closer, sure, but if you look at the absolute price of the items, its actually a lower markup
This really is a USA thread only but all can get involved. Recently our government has ruled that unlocking phones without carrier permission is now illegal. Please sign this petition to change such law so that we can own the technology we buy!!!
http://wh.gov/yA9n
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I don't see what's so unfair about this.
This impacts people who are buying carrier-subsidized devices. This is a practice that has always benefited the carrier much more than the consumer.
This ruling shouldn't be something to get mad about directly - people should be mad about how badly they're being screwed over by subsidies in general. I think it's fair enough that if you sign up to be screwed, you get your full screwing.
Also, if you actually read the thing, it doesn't apply to used devices. This only applies to new phones bought under contract wherein you had full disclosure about the phone's state and the carrier's policy - no one should hedge their bets on being able to circumvent the terms they agreed to.
Even if you buy a phone at full price from a carrier it is still illegal to unlock it without the carriers approval. Thats my issue.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
See the problem is that they claim they are losing money on people unlocking their phones then going to another carrier. The flaw here is that they aren't losing anything, if someone cancels the contract they pay the etf, and if they don't they are still paying monthly because of the contract. Its just another scheme to hurt our money. Carriers can get in on the cell phone unlocking business and charge money to unlock their own cellphones, and there won't be anyone to compete

this is the result of old baby boomers who do not understand or appreciate info tech but "represent us" in govt + ridiculous amounts of corporate lobby money in politics + people surprised and shocked when they realize they voluntarily screwed themselves by signing bad contracts.
that said, people are too freaked out by this. ask yourself: will you still unlock your phone even if its illegal? if course you would and so would most people. so, who cares?

If I paid full price for my phone, I should be able to do whatever I like to it.
But the real impact is: this law kills the spirit of technology innovation.
I see this as an issue between the consumer and carrier. Stop buying phones that don't come unlocked - demand that carriers make it an option or buy used / phones sold as unlocked only.
Carriers are slowly realising that they're losing business if they don't give people the options they want - see Sprint rolling out a pre-paid service (not just the other brands they own).
If a business is screwing you, take your business to one whose terms you like. It's like pay-day loans - terrible for you, but it's your choice to do something terrible for yourself.

If you buy your phone on contract, the cost of phone is almost always subsidized and you're playing by their rules. You're essentially leasing the device.
If you buy your phone at full mrsp price, then yes, you should be free to do whatever.
I dont see how this stifles tech advancements at all; I just see the creation of more underground and gray markets for unlocking services. All the bodega cellphone stores will still unlock phones for 30 bucks; they may just advertise less. Hell, they probably wont change that. Do you think cops will even care? Not where I live.
And unlocking tools/codes/apps will still be all over the internet. They may not be on the US Google Play Store anymore. Big deal.

Doesn't matter if you don't think it will be enforced or not, you shouldn't have to worry about being prosecuted just because you want to experiment with your own phone.
We need to reject laws like these that are hostile to the consumer and show greedy corporations and politicians that we are paying attention and won't stand for this crap.

Too little too late?
There was a thread for this, your probably not seeing it bc no one has posted on it in 4 or 5 days. Its really sad too especially considering that this is probably the first in a line of laws to be unfairly passed that screw the consumer. To everyone overseas: not everyone wants to do something they know is technically illegal, enforced or not. The options for unlocked phones get pretty narrow if you like a certain kind of phone, and even narrower if you are tied to a particular service that has better reception in your area like say verizon like with me. I live in the middle of nowhere...lol but that's a different subject. The point is this sucks bc it takes away our options as consumers. We shouldn't have to not buy locked phones until all the carriers get the hint and safe to say that would take time. Obviously they see the wisdom in this move for them or they would not have done it. I was like the 14,000th signature on this petition and have been watching and promoting it everywhere, and sadly it looks like we have lost the needed speed to finish with 100k sigs. At this rate we will finish with about 80k give or take i figure. Not saying give up bc i wont, but everyone that is in the u.s. and understands whats involved needs to pick it up big time as this gets less media coverage. Spread the word!
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7
This big brother administration keeps ramming through laws that hurt the consumer!
If we purchase a non subsidized phone at full retail do they lower our monthly bill? Can we carrier unlock?
The answer to both is no. Funny how they get it all and we get nothing in return. Enough is enough already.
I will gladly pay full retail if I "own" my phone, no carrier lock and unlocked/s-off, and they reduce my bill accordingly.
Just remember, they use OUR airwaves, and now are abusing the legal system to hold us hostage so they can profit. Pretty sure this is not legal.

I just found out at work while on a Samsung technician training the galaxy as 4's are possibly going to be recalled. The frame of the phone is to weak and flex's easy resulting in the screen cracking down the middle. Samsung is determining how many they've sold and what the cost would be. Depending on the cost they'd either issue a recall or replace the phone when it breaks for that reason.
Just letting the community know.

That's the type of information that is usually way up the food chain. The kind of information that can drive investors to cost a company hundreds of millions of dollars. How is it that tidbit of information fell into the hands of a technical group? Not directly calling you out just wondering as the person above me, is there any corroborating evidence? Or is this just something that is said off the cuff on the call? Because what you're alleging is a pretty big deal.

It makes sense though... There was that 1 guy who has a cracked screen under his glass, with no visible damage to the outer glass or phone so it could have been induced from this "recall". The guy says he never dropped the phone and the glass in the pic proves it. There was a crack down the middle of the display under glass...

good point but the biggest bullet that proves its bs is that no company will recall millions of devices on an issue that is not safety related. Companies don't recall a phone because of a weak spot, they will recall it if there is a grave risk of spontaneous combustion, or if there is a risk of physical damage to a human being. Recalling millions of phone to prevent people from cracking their screens makes no sense whatsoever. It will be hundreds of thousands of times cheaper if they just replace screens or bezels if and when people brake their screens. I already dropped mine twice, once from 2 feet and another from about 5 on office floor carpet, i have no chips or physical damage to the phone.
In law, i studied that in order to recall a product, there has to be a safety hazard or a voluntary recall because of a major and widespread manufacturing default in order to maintain reputation. Companies spend millions of dollars to evaluate if a recall if cheaper, or letting their product fry people and settling on lawsuits in court. Believe it or not, there were many instances where companies have let their products kill clients knowing there were major issues just because it was cheaper to settle in court than recall all products, this happened a lot more in the car business.
In any case, none of those scenarios are viable or even a problem here.

they never considered a recall, they never even acknowledged the problem. The gave free bumpers to clients that got the iphone within the first 3 months and the rest sued and won in court and got a lousy 15$ compensation.
Another fiasco was with the Asus transformer, they did a acknowledged from the start and they gave everybody a GPS dongle for free. And besides that, they even offered a trade-in for the new transformer infinity when it came out...now talk about a deal. You get a tablet that cant lock-in GPSs as fast as a regular device and a year later you get to trade it for a brand new spakin 1200p tablet! Asus are the boss!

thats what make a difference between an honest company and a horse crap money makin machine. Apple used to be cool, when jobs was still in charge, now all they want is to keep their crown way up there, but sorry apple, other companies are going to eventually give you the same treatment rim went through. Luckly for us, it wont happen with samsung anytime soon, and thats what happens when you diversify your business so much, youre pretty much indestructible, phones, computers, fridges, washer/dryers, tvs, electronic components, sound systems, cameras, consumer electronics, if one part of the business goes bad, the rest will eventually keep the company afloat until they catch up.
Well I recently bought the Note 5 and decided I wanted to go back to the Iphone. Ive tried selling it but had not received any good offers. Then I decided to just trade it into Tmobile and their trade in value for it is $401 dollars. I got more than that for a year old Iphone 6 Plus. I won't be buying Samsung again. And don't get me started on Samsung Pay, why announce Chase as a partner and not have them ready for launch. BofA wants 12 bucks a month for an account with them and US Bank wants 6. Nobody is applauding you. In fact it is the opposite and calling you an idiot for your unnecessary waste of thread space. Nobody really cares that you want to go back to the iPhone because people buy phones first for its personal use and not necessarily its resale value 2 years from now.
Really, most Note 5 owners SHOULD be upset. The phone has not been out 2 months and retail prices have dropped several hundred dollars due to weak sales - international models especially.

Sure, but when Samsung decides to drastically cut the price of the unlocked models, that drives down resale value for all versions. Take a look at Swappa or ebay - you've already lost 300$~ in the device your holding. Maybe not a huge deal to most, but personally, I was a little upset when I looked into selling my Note5 to swap over to a Nexus 6p.
