TF700 dead after 33 days - Asus Transformer TF700

My Infinity wend dead this weekend after left it to charge for 5 minutes. I was using it in the morning and a battery level warning of 17% remaining pop up. Turned it off and plugged to the charger. Went back in 5 minutes and planned to use it with charger. The tablet never turned back on. There was no light next to the start button. Grapped the charger to other wall outlet. The charger was felt warm as normal. At least, it was charging few minutes ago. Did a factory reset using paper clip to the hole above hdmi port and nothing happened. Called Asus support this morning. Got a RMA for turning it in to troubleshoot.
I received the unit on Aug 1st from Amazon. It just past 30 days exchange period. Now I have to go through Asus warranty claim. It may takes few weeks to get it back. Has anyone return TF700 to Asus for repair? What is the turnaround time? I requested an express replacement to Asus rep. but he said it normally took couple weeks.

Trust their turnaround time. It is usually an average of the time it takes to repair devices sent to the center (they do actually try to be accurate). However, that is probably the fastest time you can expect the device back. There are many bottlenecks in repair which could delay your device further. For example, the HTC repair center is only 15 minutes from where I live, but my Amaze (which had a damaged digitizer, a commonly damaged component) took a week longer than the estimated time of 2 weeks because they had to replace my motherboard for whatever reason and it wasn't in stock.

Are you certain that it wasn't the charger?

I asked the Asus rep how to confirm the charger. He asked me to return the charger as well. I did measure the output of charger and had 5 V but it is difficult to verify 15V output without shorting pins in USB 3 type cable. Meanwhile I don't have other charger to try. I also expected there should have enough juice to turn back on when battery level was at 15%.

did you try holding the power button and the volume up (or maybe its down) button at the same time to try and reboot it?

Power plus volume down.

Freezer
This might sound crazy but put your charger in the freezer. It can over heat and has a safety mechanism built in. !5 minutes should do it.

My buddy bought a TF700 two months ago and he's literally only had it in his hands 4 days. It's been in the repair shop the rest of the time. It's failed twice where when the battery runs completely dry, it won't ever turn back on. Not even after the charging light turns green (fully charged) again. Instead of sending him a new unit they just reload the OS and ship the unit back or do something that is only temporarily fixing it... Rinse repeat
Mine on the other hand has been working flawlessly.

Did you spend enough time on testing to make sure your Infinity tablet is dead, it could very well be severely low on battery life when you thought it was reading 17% it could have actually been much less than that.
I've seen strange charging reactions back when I had the Transformer Prime where I let it go completely out though usually with the dock keyboard out, and I try to recharge it and it take at least 10-20 minutes before reacting. It usually start with a blinking amber light, then to a solid amber light.
Other strange scenarios I documented where it takes longer than the 3 second hold of the Power button to turn on the Prime, sometimes 10 seconds and it will power up.
Did you try all these steps?

I've went through the RMA process 5 times with the Prime and once with the Infinity. Be sure when you get your "repaired" unit back it is the right color and has the correct amount of memory. I've had the wrong color sent back to me, wrong amount of memory and when I did include my power charger on their request that was never sent back either. Also, make sure you stay on top of the repair process. If you let time pass and don't prompt them to communicate you may be waiting a very long time. You just have to stay on top of it. Oh, one more thing. The black box that the tablet is sold in wasn't returned either....and that had the sticker on it with the model/SN and all that info. So if I wanted to sell it, I would have to sell it without the box it came in. All I can say is good luck.

Thanks god I haven't had no issues with mine. Bought when it first came out from best buy and I have no light bleed, screen issues, nor is mine slow or sluggish.

Thanks for your support. At first, I was thinking about there might not have enough juice to power up. I left charger connected for hours in few different occasions and hopefully the tablet would miracally await when I pressed and hold the power button. I did try reboot by holding volumn (down) and start up together and it did not help. It is suprised me how this tablet quit on me after a short charge. I have been using this tablet few hours a day and always left it charged overnight except the two nights last week. Typically the tablet was recharged after about 30% to 50% level. The two night without charging lwas the time I was able to drive the battery level down to 17%. I wish I could have a car charger to test it out the unit as it supplies 12V directly. The original Asus charger is a bit tricky with USB 3 cables. I assume the 5V carrier signal to turn on the wall charger for 15V is from the tablet side. Anyway thanks for the people who comment to this thread with their good advice and sharing of experience.

[Q] Triumph suddenly dead!

A few hours ago my girlfriend was just looking at her Triumph (was watching for messages so she wasn't actually doing anything on it) when the screen turned off. Now it wont turn back on. Have tried the power button, turning on the bootloader, and removing the battery for 5 minutes. No matter what we can't get the phone to turn back on. Any ideas on what has just happened? The phone is rooted with gingerbreak with titanium backup installed. That's it. We got the phone at Best Buy and this is our second phone. We're probably past our 30 days so this kind of bugs me! Any idea what we can do from here? Any other tricks to try?
As a quick update, Best Buy tells me that an Exchange counts as an original transaction. So I'm only 17 days into my "new" transaction. I can't believe neither of these Triumphs have lasted more than three weeks :\
Did you have it connected to the charger while using it? I have noticed it gets very hot even without the charger being plugged in. It may have over heated. Just a thought. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

No, the charger wasn't connected at the time. It was just sitting there with the screen on. The Significant Other wonder why it wouldn't turn off so she hit the power button and it didn't do anything. Finally the screen just went black but the backlight was still obviously on so she pulled the battery and put it back in. From there, she pushed the power button and the virgin mobile logo came on and nothing else. She had to remove the battery again. She put the battery back in once more and was able to get the Virgin mobile logo one more time. It froze after the logo and she pulled the battery one more time. After that the phone refused to turn on at all. When connected to the charger it doesn't do anything. Still completely lights out on the phone.
Man that sucks. I hope your able to find a fix.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I let my Triumph lose all its battery to charge it back up 100% (performing a full battery charge cycle), and it will no longer turn on. even when I have it plugged in the red light indicator will not light up most of the time.
Funny thing is, this is also my second exchange from best buy and luckily im still within 30 days and i have a replacement plan. I really suggest getting the replacement plan (its $30, good for a $300 phone), because unlike best buys other mobile protection plans, you dont pay monthly, you're covered for 2 years, and if you get tired of getting the same phone, they will give you a $300 store credit card.
You know my phone did something similar, my phone died and when i went to plug up the charger i got nothing. I think there might be something wrong with the charging ports on these phones, try wiggling the charger while its plugged in, thats what i did and it finally took a charge

upon closer inspection of the charging port, i noticed the female micro usb port was actually pushed further inside, thus preventing most chargers to work. I found a rocketfish charging adapter from best buy that seems to work perfect while my other cable didnt work at all.
As an update, we went back to best buy and sure enough they count the exchange as a new transaction, so I was only 17 days into my second transaction. They exchanged me another phone on the spot and so now we're on the third triumph. GPS checked out ok and the MEID was the correct length. The screen is the worst of the 3 (some pretty bad backlight bleed out onto the screen itself from the sides). I was picky about it but the gf isn't since you can't even see it unless the screen is completely black. So we'll see how this one holds out!
My guess is as was assumed, the battery wasn't getting charged. When the battery was removed for 30 minutes or more we were able to get the logo to show up and nothing more. My guess was the charger wasn't making contact anymore. We wouldn't want to keep a phone like that anyways but it seems like this might be a problem for these phones.
Every once in awhile mine will not power back on. It happened to me a couple of times shortly after I bought the phone.
I tried pulling the battery a couple of times and powering back up, no go.
What worked... remove battery, press power button for a couple of secs, replace battery, power back up. Has worked every time... so far.
My guess is need to drain some capacitors or that I had invoked part of boot recovery sequence without finishing?

Have you noticed the "I just broke my Triumph's Screen"- post? We'll If you saw my cracked Triumph, well that's another issue that I just discovered. The battery drained all the way and now it will not take a charge anymore. This is the exact same problem OP is having. Regarding this issue I will open up my phone sooner or later when I get a new one and take pics. I don't mind seeing wth is in there, maybe everything's held up by Elmer's glue lol. I'll make sure to let everyone know hopefully I'll do this within a couple days.

If Motorola and VMUSA are not serious about resolving issues for Triumph then this phone will be dead anyways - customers won't be buying those. The number of returns are far more than new purchase. It seems like Motorola stopped manufacturing these.
So this phone will either get Ice Cream Sandwich update or it is end of life for this phone.

[Q] "Ultimate" Sleep of Death! Ugh!!!

I'm getting fed up with this Transformer. It's been 3 days now since it went into the ultimate sleep of death and won't boot up for the life of it. Nothing. I've tried everything and no matter what it won't show any sign of life.
I've tried all possible combinations:
power for 40 seconds (even minutes at a time) = nothing
power + volume up = nothing
power + volume down = nothing
plugged into keyboard dock and above combinations = nothing
plugged into PC and above combinations = nothing
inserting and removing microSD and all of the above combinations = nothing
UGH.
What else can I do???
(Rooted w/stock ICS).
Drain your battery, give it a trickle charge for 10 mins, unplug it, hold power for 15 seconds plugging in as you do that.
If that doesn't work, purchase a cardboard box and some packing foam and RMA that guy Dx
great, this just happened to me. how do i discharge the battery if i can't get it to start?

any sod's ive had ive just held down the power button and made sure its definately off,
then plugged it into the mains powered charger and held the power button down until its came on. Usually pretty instant power on and reboot.
It's been about a month now and the damn thing still won't boot up. Not showing any signs of life and I'm 2 months over my 1 year warranty. Ugh...
Gonna see if Asus has any sort of support, or if this will be my last Asus product ever.

First, if your TF is stuck in boot you will not know since screen is dead. Youv should first hold power button for more than a minute to make it completely shut down. Then hold powerbutton to wake it up.
But after month, if it was struck in boot your battery is probably drained. Did you try an overnight charge while you sleep?
Btw, you did notsay how you got fried? What we're you doing?
My sympathies. I know that ugly feeling when your tab refuses to boot.

Trust me I've tried EVERYTHING. Charged it fully. Charged it fully for days. Charged for days on and off the dock. And drained for days on and off the dock.

I was watching YouTube on it when it automatically shut down on me and have failed to show any signs of life since. Nothing happens at all when I connect to my PC. Absolutely nothing.

That post says it all. Well it is an RMA. It is possible it is a bad battery.
But ASUS is very good about Rma since I have done two RMAs and they were very easy. It just takes time, like 2 weeks. Dont worry about custom Rom, since they blindly wipe everything.

I RMA'd it today. Here's hoping they'll take care of it even though I'm 2 months over warranty.
Otherwise I give up the Asus brand altogether.
Looking at the Prime forums, many people having issues too. I also have (2) 25.5" Asus PC Monitors and one of them crapped out on me - also about 2 months over warranty. I'm beginning to associate Asus with Acer in terms of quality.

Asus e.mailed me last night. It would appear that I somehow managed to get water damage and the screen and motherboard needs to be replaced. They want $511 to fix it. Considering that's more than the tablet is worth, I'm SOL.
No idea how it could've gotten water damage, but they did send pics to prove it. Ugh.

Was just going about my buisness using my tab as normal and all the sudden it went black. That was a couple days ago....have tried everthing and yet still nothing. Sorry to hear anyone else has to deal with this...it really sucks!
It might be completely unrelated but i had a problem where my tf101 looked completely dead but it was stuck in apx mode although this was after a failed nvflash attempt. If it can be detected by apx mode on the pc simple reflash might be the answer

TF700 won't start up, DOA? Please help.

So, received my TF700T in the post today. Got all excited, went to start it up, and nothing....
Has been on charge for 3 hours now, and I still get nothing when trying to start it up.
The orange light near the power button is on, indicating the battery is charging, but no matter what I do, whether I hold the volume down with power, hold both volume buttons and power, it won't start up / boot.
The strange thing is, when I first tried to start it up, it wouldn't load, so I plugged it into power, and I got the ASUS post screen, then it turned off almost immediately (I presume as it had insufficient power). Since then, I have not even been able to get the ASUS post screen. If I hold the power button for 10 seconds, it will vibrate after 10 seconds, then nothing happens.
I have tried all the volume + power buttons described above, as well as trying to reset button.
Is the tablet DOA? Any suggestions for ways I might be able to get it started?
Try putting a pin in the pin hole above the HDMI.

Tried this already, and just tried again now. Nothing!
Its weird that if I hold the power button in for at least 10 seconds, at about the 10 second mark, the tablet vibrates, but nothing happens.
The charger light is now green on the tablet, and still nothing. Has been on charge for 5.5 hours now.
Unfortunately, It sounds like a DOA. It happens. Good to know now then 6 months down the road.

I had exactly the same: on first boot it turned off after splash logo and I needed to use reset button to restart again.
long pressing just makes it vibrate but nothing more
And when it started, it crashed and rebooted all the time. Sometimes it went black and I had to reset it again
My replacement works perfectly, so yes it's a semy-DOA

I was gonna open a new thread since my problem is based on charging but this thread pretty much is for the same use.
I got my tf700t yesterday through a friend visit from US. It has been nearly 2 weeks since he got it and he never charged the tab since he wasn't much of a user. So yesterday he brought it to me (i'm in TURKEY btw) and the tab was working pretty properly. But it's charge was near %4 so i plugged it on to its dock and plugged the usb charger to the dock via my PC. I just saw on the tabs screen that its charging so i left it there for like 12 hrs since it was its first charge. Then after nearly 12 hrs later this morning, i disconnected the charger and saw that the tab was off. I tried to turn it on but just like cjhod1 says, I got the ASUS post screen, then it turned off almost immediately. Different then cjhod1's case, no matter i plug on the charger or not my battery led near the power button is off for all times. So i guess this means it doesnt charge at all which was operating properly 12 hrs ago.
Strangest thing is my dock doesnt charge either. I tried every possible combination but couldn't manage to get it done. Even more strangely, after a one hour charging with nothing indicating it's actually charging (the orange battery led is off for all times) it managed to get a %1 of battery charge and opened. It managed to stay on for 10 seconds and then shut down once more for all.
It seems like a battery problem but what are the odds to lose both dock's and the tab's battery after one charge. And now that i'm in Turkey, and as far as i know, asus doesn't provide an international gurantee but only for US, i can't seem to get any service here. Unless any solutions to this matter occurs, i will have to ship it to the seller that i got from the Amazon. Every suggestions or helps appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The tablet CANNOT be charged via a USB port! Use the specific charger that came with the tablet. This will deliver the necessary 15V to the system to allow it to charge.

then how come i managed to charge it the first time i plugged it to the PC? And even if so, that is not any handy at all. I will have to carry not only the usb cable but also the adapter with me for all times to be able to charge the tablet. That is not an issue for ipad as far as i know.

It's not a big deal. It charges to full within 2 to 3 hours. Put the darn usb and adapter in your bag pack along with your tablet. It's not like it's a size of a water bottle or something. Charging through the usb is not ideal since it trickle charges and will take forever. Charge it through normal means first and see if it can hold a charge through your everyday use. If it does then your good to go. Then try charging again through pc. Honestly with the tablet keyboard combo you won't have to worry about not having enough battery life to last you the whole day regardless of what you use it for.

Strangest thing is my dock doesnt charge either. I tried every possible combination but couldn't manage to get it done. Even more strangely, after a one hour charging with nothing indicating it's actually charging (the orange battery led is off for all times) it managed to get a %1 of battery charge and opened. It managed to stay on for 10 seconds and then shut down once more for all.
It seems like a battery problem but what are the odds to lose both dock's and the tab's battery after one charge. And now that i'm in Turkey, and as far as i know, asus doesn't provide an international gurantee but only for US, i can't seem to get any service here. Unless any solutions to this matter occurs, i will have to ship it to the seller that i got from the Amazon. Every suggestions or helps appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bezendra, did you get it to work? I have the same problem. I'm in Vietnam, and whilst the tablet charges just fine, the dock seems totally Dead on Arrival and doesn't charge (no light, nothing). Warranty isn't really an option here so I need to troubleshoot this exhaustively before giving up. Did you discover the problem?
Speculation: I remember a friend who visited here once, and their externally powered USB hard drive didn't work in certain houses. I think it depended on the type of voltage regulator in the house. Did you discover anything similar?

Overheating while charging?

(I also posted this over to Reddit, but I figured I'd have a home for this on XDA too.)
I haven't heard any other reports of this, so I wanted to start with this here, to see if anyone else has seen this -- or to have a place to go if other people start noticing this.
My Pixel 2 (walleye) has been overheating occasionally while charging recently. Here's the rough timeline of it:
About a week and a half ago, I woke up during the night, went to check the time, and my phone was really really hot. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it was fine. (In this case, I was using a SHIELD Tablet charger with a A->C cable.)
A few days later, I again woke up in the middle of the night a few hours after I went to sleep, and again found that it was incredibly hot. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and it said "Charged" instead of "Charging", even though it only was at 78%. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in a few times, and eventually I rebooted it and got to charge again. (This is with the stock charger.)
Last Friday, I woke up an hour or so after I had set my alarm, and my phone was powered off (when I hit the wake button, it was at the bootloader charging "big battery" screen). Powering it on, I got the message "Phone turned off due to heat. Your phone is now running normally" as a notification. (Stock charger)
This morning, I woke up again to my Pebble's alarm instead of my phone's, with the phone at the "big battery" screen. When I tried to power it on, I got a red LED; I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in a few times, and ultimately had to press and hold the power button to turn it all the way off, then plug it back into the charger. When I booted the phone, it was at 0% of a tank of battery, and again gave me the "turned off due to heat" warning. I looked in the Sleep as Android logs, and it says that I slept from 22:36 to 1:29, when the phone presumably crashed, for 2h40m from plugging it in to the phone getting hot enough that it powered down (and then drained the rest of its battery!). (This was with the SHIELD charger.)
Anyway, Google support did an advanced RMA today (and they mentioned that I would not be dinged for having cracked the antenna glass), so I think all shall be well that ends well. But I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has had this happen, and if it's gotten progressively worse for you like it has for me...

Mine has done this a couple of times too! Given that it's only 6 weeks old, I'm a little annoyed.
Last night I plugged it in using the cable that came with it and this morning it was hot like the sun. I unplugged it and turned it off until it cooled down, and when I turned it on the battery was down to 86 %. I checked the battery settings and it said its last full charge was 8 minutes ago and that none of the apps had used any battery.
Pixel 2XL set on fire
I first enjoyed the new Pixel. Everything was fine - face recognition works even at night, it did not bog down when using complex Apps, the design of the phone pleased me a lot.
However, all those features became useless when my phone set itself on fire. I travelled to another country where they use 220 Volts - in Australia we have 110 Volts
One night I woke up with the room full of smoke and quickly realised that something was wrong..... My phone overheated, and released an incredible amount of smoke then set on fire, my mattress was damaged and the charger melted with the phone. I quickly unplugged the charger and opened the windows. They don't have fire alarms where i was staying- not in my room, anyway.
I have to admit that I used Samsung A3 charger (however the A3 charger outputs the standard 5 volts and 1 or 2 amps that most smart phones use and is rated between 100-240 Volt input) - not original Google Pixel charger, but there should be something inside the phone that would have stop it from overcharging like in most other phones.
So i now have a burnt mattress, my phone is now completely ruined and has melted the Samsung A3 original charger. Now more than a month of going back and fourth with JB HI-FI and Google. Both Google and the store deny liability at this stage despite multiple reports of the Pixel 2XL setting on fire. Communication has been terrible as well. On my 4 attempt to contact the store I got only 1 informative call back.

Not sure where you came up with that, Australia uses 240v, not 110v. Good luck trying to get your problem sorted out though.

I notice that 2 of the 3 reports here are not using the original charger, and are using A->C cables. Bad A->C cables can be risky for charging (not all have a particular resistor that's needed to do this safely), so I wonder whether the cable could be an issue in either of these?

Indonesia uses the same mains voltage as Australia (220/230/240 doesn't matter). You may have had dodgy electrics in the hotel or something like that, no way we can know.
I wish when the phone overheats, people would look at the battery in Settings, tap the graph if you need to, and look for any sudden drop to zero (then an immediate rise back to, or to almost, the level it was at before dropping. This is the sign of a dendrite in the battery, and a thick enough one could cause the battery to burn. (https://www.google.com/search?q=lithium+battery+dendrite&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 if anyone is interested in dendrites, and you'll notice that a fix has probably been developed, although we most likely won't see it for a few years.)
If Google gets enough reports of dendrite growth in their batteries, they may just decide to specify someone else's battery. (I don't think they want to be known as the company that produced the second coming of the Note 7.)

U11 Battery suddenly only gets ~10 hours from full charge

I've been very happy with my U11 for nearly 2 years (ugrade due in june this year).
Recently i've had a problem where connecting a charge cable has been intermittent, either slow charge or no charge until after a few attempts, it works fine and shows 'charging rapidly'
Eventually, a couple of days ago, i started to get a USB error when I plugged in in, telling me to clear any obstruction or liquid from the port.
I used a small shard of soft toothpick and some alcohol to pick some bits of fluff out of the depths of the port and give it a clean, being as careful as I could not to damage it, I'm electronics sensitive, not ham fisted and I got quite a lot out.
Now when I plug the cable in, it charges rapidly but says it's only charging on AC power, charging takes the normal amount of time but the battery discharges rapidly
The attached image shows a full charge in the evening and consistantly dropping overnight until it died sometime in the morning, even though It was obviously just sat not doing anything on my bedside table. Normally, i'd get between a day and a half and 2 days.
It's clear i've damaged the port somehow, perhaps bridged a couple of pins so it's discharging?
Does anyone have any suggestions? Can these ports be replaced easily?

Without the cleaning part of the charge port I had a similar experience. In my case, rebooting the phone once was the solution. It might sound obvious to try, but I walked around for a week before I tried that so may be you haven't tried it yet. I normally hardly ever reboot the phone.
So you might give it a try.

Just an update to this post if anyone's interested.
I sent the phone off for repair with HTC, the phone is still in warranty.
Even after explaining the problem in detail, they replaced the battery and sent it back to me.
The same problem persisted so after talking to them again and only just managing to contain my frustration, I sent it back to them again.
This time they took 3 weeks to repair it, I received it back today and guess what? . . . . same problem persists.
It's obvious they have not replaced the port (there's a tiny mark in the plastic I recognise).
Attached is the battery usage at standby for one hour after a full charge and the second brand new battery.
I'm still under warranty and i'm still in contract with EE (UK), so i've asked for a replacement phone from HTC. but I feel I may be better chasing taking this up with EE.

Have you tried clearing caches?
Go to recovery and wipe dalvik/cache.
Generally solves the problem for most.
