Got home from work, and the cappy was in the recovery menu. Rebooted it and it went right back into the menu. So figured I would reflash the rom, no luck. Now I can't even get to the recovery menu, or put it in download mode. Basically at this point I would like to say thanks to everyone that has made this phone such a blast to use.
If you have a suggestion on how to fix this I'll gladly try them, but I think the memory chips are fried.
You can get a USB Jig that will force your phone to get into download mode. Search on eBay to find one. It's very helpful!

Hi all, i'm a new guy here how you all doing?!
I've registered basically because I'm in abit of a pickle and you guys seem like a nice, friendly and busy community so I thought it might be really helpful to ask here
Well basically I decided to just sell on my hero. It's on ebay and I thought right I better factory reset it. Now I was buggering about in the settings I stupidly, as I just found out, wiped the SD card and then I finally found the factory reset bit. I'm rooted on Villianrom since I bought it and I thought I'll just try resetting it and see what happens.
I pressed reset and then I was at some sort of recovery villianrom menu, I used the trackball and clicked on 'reboot phone' now It keeps just rebooting and not getting past the white HTC screen. I've googled it and it's a common problem people are getting when they're pissing about with roms.People reply saying do this do that and I haven't a clue what theyre on about I've only had the bloody phone barely 2 days.
I've got a feeling there's like nothing actually on the phone, no rom or os thing
I've tried doing a reset thing where I keep hold of menu, end call and back and it goes to a different screen and I press menu I think to reset it but still the same thing, stuck at the HTC quietly brilliant screen
Because my sd card is wiped I need to access it somehow and put on some rom file things I'm guessing?
It's on ebay, it needs to be working before I sell it Where from here?
It's probably a quick and easy fix if you know what you're doing so if someone knows what to do could you please please post a step by step guide for a complete n00b and I'll be eternally grateful
P.S. Sorry for having probably the douchiest intro post but there we go
I am not aware of this villain rom for hero but it sounds like to me that tried a2sd? And then wiped your sdcard, so the boot is looking for the EXT partition with all the apps on it. Whether thats even true or not, which is suspect it is, just boot into the recovery, run the .5 ruu and sell/ship your phone to the new happy owner. He/she should be given the choice of root/not-root factory phone.
I've got it working now
It basically needed a rom flashing on it. I'd just bought it like 2 days ago so I guess I taught myself how to do this stuff unwillingly I couldn't access the usb mode, because I couldn't select it to mount as disk from the menus because obviously it wasn't booting up.
So I kept hold of menu and power for abit till a menu comes up. Clicked on usb-ms and that mounted it as a disk. i put the villianrom zip file on the sd card and from the same menu on the hero I did all the different wipes and then flashzipped the rom or whatever. 10 minutes later it was up and running
Good times all round
Alright, allow me to summerize to you guys the series of screw ups that happened in the day that I've had my captivate.
Basically, it's like this. I got this phone from my brother (it used to be his). Now when I got it, I began basically erasing his contents and setting up mine. The Phone is on the Cognition OS and everything seemed fine.
Now, when I tried to set up my google account, it said I had to do a factory reset, I did that. Then I realized the market place app was no longer there :/
I did another factory reset, still didn't help, and started looking around for info.
I told my buddy this and he said he could fix it. So he get's the update.zip for rooting the phone, sets it up on the SD card, and goes to root the phone normally. Except when he restarts the phone after, it doesn't go to the set up screen, so he just starts it normally and enters the setup screen by holding home+volume up+power.
Then he presses the reinstall packages, and the phone seems to get to work on the update pack...
Now, every time I turn on the phone the voice says "converting data partition to optimize extension four", turns off, then repeats.
I've looked up this problem and it seems to have something to do with voodoo, but the causes in the other cases the causes were different.
Can someone please help me out here? I've also tried doing a hard reset by holding the volume down button and pressing power, but nothing seems to take me to the recovery mode.
HELP.
Did you pull the battery during this our did you let it run? Should let it run.
Does your phone boot up at all?
At&t or rogers?
Do you have a windows pc with usb drivers installed?
What its your build number, located under battery, something like 1008?
Answer these questions and we can get you back up and running
-Well after he did the reinstall thing we let it run for like 15 minutes, then he pulled the battery out.
-The phone only shows the AT&T screen, say's the "converting data partition..." thing, then goes blank and does it again. I've let it run for like 10-15 minutes before having to turn it off because I couldn't have the speech going off.
-I have a windows PC, and but I'm not sure if I have the drivers installed. I have Kies installed and when I plugged the phone in before Kies could recognize the phone (though it wouldn't fully connect, it would just say "connecting" on the kies screen).
-The Model is SGH-I897, that's the only relevant thing I see under the battery, that good enough?
Thanks a lot.
No, your phone has a build, on phone under battery, the word build is not listed. Something between 1006-1012
If we are going to do this you need to be active, I can not wait 20 minutes in between responses
Sorry the internet kinda crapped out actually.
And I see a 1007 between the bar codes, that it?
Yes
Before we get started try this
Take battery, sim, ext sd our of phone
Plug usb into pc but not phone
Put battery back in
Hold volume up and down, while holding plug in usb
Screen should come on with android with shovel
You can pull the battery again
Confirm this happened
Yep, it happened.
It may be easier if we use gtalk, log in on your pc using google id, send me an invite [email protected]. This way we know when each other respond
Just sent u the inv

Have you gone back to stock and then reflashed? Seems like some files are getting corrupted. Because you have a voodoo kernel I would follow these steps. Make sure to back up.
1. Use Odin to flash a non vodoo kernel.
2. Flash stock rom and master clear
3. Reflash rom of choice if it is 2.2
3a. If you want 2.3 follow the tut on it.
4. Breath a sigh of releive lol
So I've had the G-Tab for a month now (stock 1.1) and decided to change the rom to Vegan-Tab and followed these steps.
1. Installed CWM fine no problems.
2.Repartitioned, again fine no problems.
3. Tried installing Vegan-Tab appeared to work fine until after re-boot the tab got stuck on the three birds.
4. Realised I should have run NVFlash before installing new Rom so ran NVflash, again appeared fine until re-boot. This time I was not able to turn the Tab on (Power Button not working)
So now the only way I can turn on the device is to run NVflash (tried with and without CWM) and leave it on all day.Power button works fine for entering sleep mode or for turning Off but just will not turn the Tab on. Any time I try to install a new Rom I get through all phases until the re-boot, then nothing. Guessing I am maybe stuck in APX but how do I fix?
Yes... you're in an APX loop. Try the following...
1) Do an nvflash to start it up and immediately do a datawipe. If the resultant restart doesn't fix it...
2) Goodintentions has a GTablet for Dummies website with known good nvflash images. Follow his instructions carefully.
3) If none of that has worked... Sometimes the only way out of these loops is to force the tablet to reload a stock bootloader. The following procedure will do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13474033&postcount=114
This guy has already tried all those tricks. I was the one who sent him here. Anyone else know how he could fix his gtab? I ran out of ideas.
If that's the case I'd be interested in seeing it. Ive never seen one that failed all of the above... Perhaps a hardware problem?
Logs would help...
Any error messages during nvflash?
Any other odd behavior?
Be happy to help if you can supply more info.
Hey, yo, try my new code detox in the home page. Can't believe I forgot about that.

Thx for your input guys, especially goodintentions. Ended up contacting Viewsonic and sending unit back. If they repair/replace it great, if not and I get it back I will try your detox. Either way next time I will follow your directions to the letter and won't get carried away this time. I will also be sending a donation/beer money your way! You guys are great for us dummies.

Will VS replace the unit even though you flashed a ROM to it. I was wondering if I should send mine in. I NVFlashed it and now I get nothing. no screen, no recovery mode, no APX mode. It is not recognized by Windows when plugged in nothing but that little red glowing light when I plug in the power jack.
If you can't turn it on, then they can't turn it on.
I'm guessing what you have is a hardware issue. Just a coincidence that it happened as you flashed in something else.
I suspect it's a software problem and not related to the hardware models. We have htc inspires though.
Wife and I have identical phones. She came home from work and told me hers crashed; she said she charged it on her way in to work and when she reached to use it saw the root/boot/recovery/whatever screen. (She described it and then when it came up when I looked at it, confirmed that was the screen she'd seen.)
We've got android 2.2.1, if that helps.
Anyway, the phone crashed and won't restart. I pulled the battery out, waited, and popped it back in, and nothing happened. Pulled it out, waited, popped it in, tried the method described here *edit: apparently too new to post links. it was at the htc community.* of trying to bring up the recovery menu. Looks like we have fastboot enabled, which a mod describes as being a known thing. I do the keystroke method as described here, and it brings the menu with the 4 options - reboot, recover, factory reset, and something else, but it doesn't let me navigate with the volume key the way the site and the bootscreen on the phone tell me I should be able to.
So - what went wrong, how can I fix it? I'd rather not have to schlep out to an AT&T store if I don't have to, especially if we can figure it out here. I'd rather not have to do a factory reset, as probably nothing is backed up or saved to the sim, but at this point, I'm worried that's not even an option I can select.
Cliffs:
1. Android phone crashed and won't reboot.
2. Can't make selections in the boot menu using the volume key as I'm supposed to
3. Phone runs through fastboot and fails to start up - I tried the thing I'm supposed to do in response to that as described here *edit: apparently too new to post links. it was at the htc community.*
4. This should be an easy fix / probably something someone here has encountered before.
edit: Don't know if this means anything diagnostically, but while the phone should be fully charged right now, it reads as at 0% when I plugged it in. I figured the utility that measures that probably isn't available at this level in the start-up?
edit2: She mentioned just now that it looked normal when she got up for work. Was at work and tried to use it but it was in airplane mode and she hadn't put in airplane mode herself. She clicked the airplane mode icon to switch out of it and the icon animation just sort of hung. She put it back on her belt like that, it sounds like. When she picked it up again it was in that root menu.
We're not rooted, and these should be vanilla installations.
If this is the wrong place to ask about this, can someone direct me to the right section? I wasn't quite sure where to post this. I reviewed the instructions and did a quick search... but my search-fu might suck.
I do not normally post on here, just read and learn =) However, I'm having an issue with my G2 for AT&T. I have a Nexus 6 and cracked the screen, I was trying to get my G2 up and running until my replacement gets in. I had CyanogenMod on it but did not turn on the phone in quite a while. Got an update, did that and nothing was working. Could not even get Google Play services working at all. Flashed a random ROM to see if it would help and now I cannot even get into recovery. The phone operates fine, however if I try to do the power button + volume down button to reset the phone, I get to the point where I hit the power button twice and the phone resets. I've selected rebooting into recover a hundred times with no luck, it will get to recovery and before I can hit anything....reboot. Last night I tried to go back to stock with LG Flash Tool (after downloading everything I need to download) but keep getting Fail after unplugging my phone and plugging it back in download mode. I know long paragraphs are not well liked here but i feel i'm sort of o ut of options other than reaching out to you awesome people! Just wanna go back to stock at this point. I've never had this issue where I cannot even get into recovery but the phone work perfectly fine! grrrrrr
