[Problem] Freezes when trying to wipe data/factory reset on CWM recovery - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Hi, I want to install a new ROM, and is the first time I'm trying.
I've followed the steps correctly, and when I press the 3 button and it opens the Samsung recovery, I hit reinstall packages and it loads the orange cwm recovery.
Now this is where the problem begins.
I need to wipe data/factory reset, but when I hit it the phone freezes. (If I wipe on the phone it works, and on the samsung recovery it also works.)
If, on cwm recovery I wipe cache it works, partitioning on cwm recovery also works.
First this is what happened:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
E:format_volume: make:extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
I partitioned on Rom manager and this happened:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
E:format_volume failed to unmount "/cache"
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
I partitioned again on cwm recovery and this happened:
- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
It always freezes on "Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure..."
In all three cases.
I don't understand why, and my question is that after it freezes if I turn off the phone (by pressing the turn off button which works), and hit reinstall packages again, and clean cache and delvik cache and load the ROM, if it will work.
I don't know what more can I do..

Why are you partitioning your SD card so many times?

Because it wasn't working correctly?
btw, if I format the sd card, the partition will still remain, right?

Since CWM isn't partitioning correctly, try partitioning on your computer. This guide is helpful -> link. The ext partition should be 1024 MB (=1 GB) or 2048 MB (=2 GB) depending on how much space you want for apps. Swap should be 0 MB. The rest should be FAT32 for your storage. I personally only have two partitions, my FAT32 one and my EXT one, I don't have a SWAP partition.
Format should just erase the SD card, not the partitions, though I might be wrong.

I partition on the computer which didn't worked then I partitioned on the app rom manager but the maximum ext was 512 mb..so I went to partition on cwm recovery when booting..and put 2048 for ext and 0 for swap as you told me..
But if I delete the data on samsung recovery, and then boot CWM recovery, and wipe cache and the dalvik cache there, it's might work right?
thanks a lot.

When you say partition on computer didn't work, what do you mean? It didn't partition your SD card? Or it didn't solve the problems of the wipe freeze? I think you need to stop trying to partition it using so many different tools, erase all the partitions and start over on a computer. It should work, and if it doesn't then it might be a SD card issue.
Edit: Hmm, yeah that should work technically! I've asked on the ROM thread, lets see what they say.

When I partitioned on the computer the ext partition wasn't working right..the software didn't even recognise it..but I think that now it is rightly done..
Maybe tomorrow I'll try to wipe data on the samsung recovery, then I'll reinstall packages and on cwm I'll wipe cache and dalvik and then try to install the rom..maybe it will work..I hope so!

Ext is a Linux file system and Windows won't recognise it. I'd recommend a fresh partition (delete all partitions and then add in your FAT32 partition and EXT2/3/4 partition, making sure both are Primary partitions).

I actually partitioned both of mine as Fat32 and it works great

I think that now it is formated correctly. But the problem still remains.
I think I'll try to wipe the data on samsung recovery, and then complete on cwm recovery.
EDIT: so, I was wiping data and like always it friezed, so, I turned it off, and he turned on on samsung recovery, I pressed reinstall packages, and on cwm deleted cache and dalvik. Installed the rom, and it worked. The rom is functioning, and the problem I had with the "message not processed due to insufficient funds" disappeared. I think the rom is working right, but it doesn't vibrate when I receive sms, and the leds doesn't work either. Don't know if it's like that, I'll see on the rom thread.
Thanks a lot.

Glad you finally got it working I would highly recommend doing a reinstall using the new voodoo red CWM recovery after wiping all the data, etc ... just to make sure all of its completely wiped (reinstalling different ROMs sometimes leaves old data on different partitions and takes up space). You should also re-partition SD card just to be safe. But of course this is all optional, just my two cents
You need to play around with different settings. Like under Sound you'll have the Vibrate option set to Only on Silent, Always On, etc. On the SMS setting itself, you can set different ringtones, etc under setting. LED only works on Missed Calls and Charging atm. The only thing that doesn't work (for me anyway) is on some forms, like SMS To field, when you type a name it doesn't come up till you select it. This is a theme issue faced by everyone and there are no fixes atm. Did you install LEAN GOV or the full one? If you installed LEAN, mine didn't come with Google Search installed, download the apk from the internet and install. Using the Link2SD app (which I recommend for saving space) you can Press+Hold the Google Search app from your applications list and convert it into a Systems App. This lets you use the search button on keyboard and search widget as well! I also recommend ADW Launcher which you can install from the Play Store.
If you have any problems, don't hesitate to hit me up Click Thanks if something I said was helpful

Another app I would highly recommend installing ASAP is Titanium Backup. It'll save current versions of apps and data for you to as a backup to your sd card. It's really come in handy a number of times as I've tried new roms or switched back to an older version if an app comes out with a bad update.

Yes, I went on Sound and I put it on Vibrate Always. It doesn't work. The only way for me to know it I received an sms is on the top on the notifications. No even the messaging icon says that I have a sms. But that's ok. When I type a name to send a message the name doesn't came up either. That's a bit bad, by I can handle it! I installed the LEAN GOV-PERFORMANCE.
I'll see the rest that you talked about!
I installed adw launcher, but I don't know were it went. On the settings the "theme settings" doesn't work, and it says to force close.

Help Please Market out of space cache Problem

Hello everybody
I have a big problem since 2 weeks with my sdcard / app2ext.
It starts with fjfalcon cyanogen mod but i come back to miui final the last week (for holiday i needed a good camera...) and it s the same.
My problem is that when i want to install or update an app(by the market) it keep saying that i haven t sufficient space...Superuser update by itself (not by the market) and it works
But i have 1Go of ext (at least half empty) and i also have a lot of space in the internal memory (even in my fat32 i have at least 3Go...)
So why i m lacking of space???
I try to wipe dalvik cache but it s the same cause it rebuild it at boot.
But when i go in the cache folder by root explorer i can see that i have 105Mb used and only 300Ko free..
I try to reformat only the ext it still the same i also clear all my sd and start over (but copying back all my apps to the ext part) but nothing change too... I also delete my swap partition cause i never use it but it can t be the problem
Someone have an idea??? I format my sd 3times this week... I don t have anymore idea......
edit i forget to says that i use app2ext with an ext3 part but i try ext4 or ext2 and it s the same
the space the market error is complaining about is the Cache, nothing to do with your physical storage
CM6 is fixed to prevent that bug
sounds like CM7 or MIUI ports the guys are working on has not been tweaked with enough cache for the Download cache for Market

I never had any issue with this rom and i used to have more than 150 apps installed now i only have 75apps but no more space... i can t understand why!

Thanks but that was the first thing i try... But i never wipe only the cache (i wiped dalvik cache also) so i m trying it right now...
But just to be clear i reinstall others rom many times (4 or 5 times) so i always clear all....
edit: it s the same... My cache is still full (100Mb full 5 M free) after the wipe of the cache
@AllGamer
3Gb free on sd and 50Mb in the internal storage.....

??? And how???????????
I search it but i didn t find anything talking about this in the cm7 thread...
But i install the 18/11 version of your rom and it s the same.
I think the only choice i have is to delete all my sd and start all over... But i can t understand why... The cache is not in the sd!
I would suggest exploring your ext partition and see if you have any duplicates in there. Otherwise, to me it seems like you have a ghost in the machine. I always hate to do this and hate suggesting it, but might be time for a reformat and fresh sbf/flash straight to CM7 and not overlay any other ROM.
Wait a minute. Do you have a cache cleaner app (Cache Cleaner NG is good b/c it removes cache from internal and SDcard - Cachemate is another one)? I am thinking that you might have too much built up cache. Example, you go into your XDA app and check out some threads, screenshots,...that all builds up useless cache. Go into settings>manage apps>your app and clear the cache. I have seen my market hold up to 5mb and my XDA app hold almost 70+mb of cache. I am really thinking that may be the culprit.

Good idea i m gonna try cache cleaner. But i hope i will be able to install it.....
But for the fresh reformat/flash sbf i already did this that s why i don t understand at all.
I reflash sbf. Install a new rom and clear all the cache / Dalvik cache... (all that at least 3 times....)
The only thing i didn t format is the sd card. Indeed i format it, make new fat32 and ext and copy all my old fat 32 and ext data.
I didn t want to loose all my ext apps but i think i don t have the choice now. But i m not even sure that it will solve my problem...
Cache cleaner don t work too...
it succeed to wipe all but nothing change i still have only 4mb left... (by root explorer). And it seems to be the dalvik cache folder which is full
I can t understand how this folder can stay full after a fresh sbf flash a wipe and a new rom....
To me it seems that if you are reformatting and then restoring, you are essentially restoring the problem. Try reinstalling apps with Titanium.

I will have to format my sd and start over from beginning but i still can t understand why i already have a lots more apps so why whit less app i m lacking of space???
I couldn t wait any longer so i format my sd card
Now i havent anymore apps but all works...
But if someone understand why i had this.....
You should be able to restore most apps with TB. Sucks that you had to reformat. So frustrating, I know and have been there myself. Different problem but same result. The dreaded reformat. Maybe sometimes that is just what is needed. Bummer though.

I explain it in the rom's thread but i didn t restore any apps for the moment (i can t install titanium backup...) it s a fresh installation on a fresh sbf and a clear sd (only with an ext part and an app folder in it)
And i can t install any app by the market or with an apk.
On the others thread someone tell me about a Mz tip to make it work by deleting the secure folder on the sd (but i can t too cause i can t install root explorer...)
Too bad the rom seems fast! And so pretty too! Maybe i will try to install another rom to install root explorer on the ext and come back

Market FC may be caused by .android_secure folder on sdcard. You can't delete it directly from the phone, though (you have to use USB). But if you reformatted the FAT partition, the old one shouldn't be there unless you copied/restored it from a backup.

SD Card Error Message

Code:
[B]E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext] [/B]
This is the error I get using Revolutionary and am flashing a new rom using the 'correct' method spoken of here.
This error message occurs after I've wiped Dalvic Cache. The phone still performs as normal without any issues. But I'd like to get rid of this error if i can.
Can anyone help with this or has anyone had or seen it before?

Try re-formatting the sd-ext partition using 4EXT recovery. Failing that, backup your entire SD card contents and re-format the whole thing, then copy your files back. I had a 512MB EXT3 partition on my card for ages from my old Desire days and A2SD+ ROMs. Never got your message but that's what I would try.
Isn't that SD partition? I also have that (when flashing, or doing backup) and I thought it was normal coz I don't have partition of my SD.

Thanks for your answers guys.
@wnp_79 I always format my sd card when i flash a new rom.
@MarlIX I'll try formatting again and making a partition using the whole sd card size to see if it solves it.
I guess that it depends on situation in which you're extending main partition with SD card (as HTC Desire users have to do in order to install ROM which doesn't fit on internal memory). In normal cases you'll have such warning because you don't have extended partition on SD (But someone please correct me if I'm wrong)
ah ok so i shouldnt worry about it then really unless the rom i want to flash requires extended partition?
I can make a partition on Revolutionary i get these options 128m,256m,512m etc etc and then i brings up a menu saying swap size 0m,32m,64m,128m or 256m.
Any guesses on the best way to set my card up?
If you are not using it then use either choose the smallest size, our use 4ext recovery to remove it.
Whenever i did it, a 0MB swap was just fine.

I see an option to remove all partitions and start from scratch so next time i flash i'll select that and maybe that will sort it out.

Formatting question

OK, so I'm going to give it one more try and install a custom rom. When formatting in cwm, I see format boot, format system, format data, format cache, and format sdcard. Which one does NOT get formatted so I do not lose the rom zip file I am installing? I'm assuming format sdcard would be the one I would leave alone, but not sure. Thanks.
I think I figured it out. I formatted everything except boot and sdcard and everything seems to be working good. Also, I chose not to copy home screen in go launcher settings and no longer have the problem of my home screen duplicating itself after every reboot. I'm back on zeus baby!
All but sdcard. Bit of a late answer but I myself usually format all but the sdcard.
All you need to format is system, data, and cache

[Q] no internal space after installing rom

Need help and can't post in the thread required because i'm new. I installed explorerman's rom xenon system http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048312 which installs great but after install and rebooting several times I still have an internal storage issue. I have a 32gig SD partitioned with a 4gig ext3 partition, when the rom boots I get an error about internal storage then I get an error about the m2sd app saying the script is either missing or out of date. I follow the instructions and update through m2sd then, after a few minutes reboot the phone. Next it still say's the internal memory is full, 1mb free and m2sd still showing errors with no data moved to the sd-ext. I tried a 4gig sd card with a 1 gig ext3 partition but still the same problem.
I am doing as said and wiping dalvik cache etc. I have a backup of the ONLY rom that works which is based on android 4.03 but I want the original setup back on the phone so any help needed and please, no stupid comments or immature comments as I have seen from some posts here. i'm not a child but at the same time I am not a tech-head, thanks.

I wouldn't know how to, I just trust the developer and since the rom does everything I wouldn't know where to look. the last time I tried editing a rom zip, it wouldn't install because it didn't match the original signature of the zip file. Also, because I am a new forum user, I can't contact the developer directly for some help.
Make 1 gb partition(Enough)! As the script uses 100mb of internal for every 500mb sd-ext....so making 3gb is useless.
Plus while configuring the app disable safe mode and see if that helps

Nope, didn't work, wiped the SD card and made a 1gig ext3 partition, also disabled safe-mode as suggested, still loads EVERYTHING to internal memory with 1mb left, it also comes up with a busybox error and a script error on first boot. I went into M2SD and set apps, data and delvik to use the sd-ext partiotn and waited, nothing, so rebooted the phone, nothing. All with the same message of 'The current status does not match your settings for this option' under Applications, Data and Delvik Cache, also 'Could not set the sdcard readahead' which is set to 512 as default.

u have to freshly install the xenon and after installing and completing setup open mount2sd and it will give u a window says install busybox and install the script somthing like that ...click on the both and after green check mark reboot ur pico....if the problem still there then check the partition ...use recovery to partition ur sd card.

Why you don't install cm10.1 beta 3. Its great and cool and stable to. Based on 4.2.2. Android os install link2sd and make both partition of fat32 by mini tool and don I have this problems when install the ROM you have then after I do this I have 8 GB SD card 1 GB fat 32 partition and other for data. Alls going good smooth stable. And a have 43 app installed on my pico and remaining internal memory showing 87 mb my good suggestion is to change ROM .
And give a time to the developers of (explorerman's rom xenon system) to make the ROM best
sent from my HTC explorer having ROM cm10.1 beta 3.
using xda app the best developers site for android

Did all that, I always do a complete clean of the phone before I try anything but still not working. I think, because it was a T Mobile HTC Explorer rather than a generic one that there is something hard coded into it. I see through the forums so many people having no problems at all but they have generic phones rather than unlocked phones from service providers. I am not a programmer so this is just guess work and from experience, I can't even restore the phone using an RUU because it will only accept a T-Mob one. If there a way to replace the entire software on the phone then I would but it's programmed into the chips at factory level (low level) since the phone was produced by HTC for T-Mobile. If the phone had been bought directly from HTC then there would be less problems. So far, I haven't found a single rom that doesn't have some kind of problem with this phone.
Thanks for all the suggestions but I'm guessing it's time to 'pick a window' for it and just save up for a more modern phone than trying to keep this HTC Pensioner going.

[Q] Issues with KatKiss 4.3.1_027 on TF101

Good morning-
I have a TF101 (with keyboard) running KatKiss 4.3.1_027 and gapps 4.3_20130914. Everything was fine until yesterday morning when I lost network connectivity and decided to reboot (this happens from time to time). Unfortunately, now my tablet won't boot. I get the splash screen with the swirling colored circles, but nothing more.
I tried booting to TWRP (v2.6.3.0 if it matters) and flashed KK and gapps again (including wipes as instructed). This time, it got to an "Upgrading Android" screen, went through my apps, but then got stuck on "Starting apps." I've given it about an hour in both situations and still nothing.
To make matters worse, my microSD slot is flaky and usually doesn't read my card. Based on what I've found, it looks like I have to use adb to push any new files to the tablet. If I boot TWRP and connect my TF to my PC (Windows 7), it tries to install "ASUS Android MTP Device" but is not successful (yellow exclamation point - "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"). I've tried downloading and installing the suite from ASUS, but that doesn't seem to help. "adb devices" doesn't list anything, so I'm stuck here as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Brian

This is what I responded to you over at TFF:
Sorry for the issues, it looks like the issue is a corrupt /data/ partition. By default "fsync" is off because this makes it faster, however it could get in a bootloop due to this speed. The fix is to flash the "fsync_on.zip" before the boot loop happens.
Once it happens, you are stuck, but there is help.
If you have TWRP 2.6.3.0, it is supposed to have USB support. Plug in a USB drive before booting to TWRP and it should be there.
To fix your issue and lose very minimal data, here is what will need to be done:
Boot to TWRP.
Backup only the /data/ partition. I would back it up to USB if possible, or if not back it up to the internal or microSD (if the microSD is playing nice).
Next (here is the leap of faith) do the wipe of the SYSTEM, CACHE, DAVLIK and DATA partitions. Do not do a FORMAT DATA, just a WIPE DATA (in the advanced section of the WIPE menu).
Now, install KatKiss and the GAPPS.
Wipe CACHE & DAVLIK.
Reboot.
Sign in to your Google account. You can have it restore apps if you want, I usually do myself, but it does not really matter.
Once it is done restoring your apps (or if you choose not to restore) open the Play Store an install Titanium Backup and the Premium Key for TiBu. You need the premium to restore from a TWRP backup.
Open TiBu and go into the Menu section, then find the option to restore from a nandroid backup. This will scan for any nandroid backups. Pick the backup to restore from and it will take a few minutes to scan the backup. Pick the apps you want to restore data and / or the app from.
Go make a coffee and wait for it to complete.
You may lose data from one or two apps, but you will have it from the rest of them. That is better than nothing.
Thank you!!
If that's all it is, then it's not as bad as I thought.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be working for me. I used TWRP to power off my tablet. Then, I plugged in a USB stick into one of the ports on my keyboard, as this is the only way that I have access to a port. TWRP boots as expected, but I can't see my USB device anywhere. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a partition on the internal storage that I can use for the backup that won't get wiped by the process you outlined above?
Thanks again!!
You can use the INTERNAL storage option, just be sure that when you wipe you only wipe the DATA partition. Do not choose to FORMAT DATA.
WIPE DATA = wipes the /data/ partition without wiping /data/media/ (which is the /sdcard/ directory or INTERNAL)
FORMAT DATA = formats the entire /data/ partition.
As I said above, you can use the internal storage option but be sure to only use the wipe data option.

Just so I'm 100% clear:
Boot to TWRP
Check only "Data" from the left menu.
On the right side, "Storage: Internal Storage" is selected and nothing needs to be changed here.
Swipe to back up
Proceed with the steps in your original post.
Correct.

Success!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! Two follow-ups to this:
1.) Since I was never able to get this working, is there a way to access the USB/SD card slots on the keyboard dock in TWRP? Using the internal storage is good, but if I want to wipe the whole thing (since my microSD card slot doesn't work), I would really have no way of ever being able to do this.
2.) I actually went up to 4.4.2, mostly because I could. However, I seem to have issues with the Google Play store where apps are always stuck on "Installing..." then the get installed but not really. I think I'll go back down to 4.3 unless there's a way to solve this.
Thank you again!!
