Hello XDA Developers,
First off let me say thank you for all the information always found on your forums, however I've run into a snag with my phone (HTC EVO Shift 4g) and need some help. I was doing a factory reset of my device using the tool in the Clockwork Mod Recovery (v5.0.2.0) and I went to wipe some additional data off my SD card, and inadvertently chose to format the /system, and pretty much every directory in the storage menu, which I later realized I probably shouldn't have done as now I can't get my phone to boot. Where the snag falls into here, I had made a backup of all my data on my SD card but have misplaced my full backup made through the clockwork mod. When I try booting my phone it simply comes up with the white boot screen with the "htc" logo in green. I have tried about everything I could possibly think of to get my shift working again, since it won't fully boot, the only option I've been able to try have been trying to get a ROM to install from a .zip, but I keep running into errors, did I manage to wipe out some sort of critical data when I did those formats?? Any help you guys can offer me will be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your expertise and input on this.
NOTE: I have tried to download one of the STOCK RUU's that you guys have posted, I have yet to find one that will actually download or resolve my issue!
Sounds like you wiped and formatted everything.. Including your sd card.
Download a ROM to your pc - In clockwork go to mounts and storage - plug your phone into your pc and select mount usb. Transfer the ROM onto your sd card, unmounted your sd, wipe then flash.

Alright man all that happened was when you hit format system, you wiped the ROM from the phone, so download any ROM of choice go into recovery then mount as a storage device and transfer the ROM to the SD card, unmount then format system, data, cache and dalvik cache and flash the ROM and you will be fine

Ok but does anyone have a stock RUU Rom I can download to do this? I'd kind of like to revert to stock in this process and I can't find one that works properly, thanks!

Can you boot into clock work recovery? That's all you need.
I flashed the MHX Superlite 4.5 yesterday. Media scanner "starts" whenever I open gallery or music or any app that accesses media. Songs/pictures on my external SD card would not be recognized by either stock music player, play music, gallery
I flashed MHX Superlite 5.0 today. The problem persists. I searched the thread and found that someone suggested to run "SUPERIPE" then reflash.........I'm assuming they meant Superwipe. I ran Superwipe TWICE, re flashed and still no change.
Fortunately there is no stick when restarting or shutting down, but I could live with that.............Need my music
Thanks
Update: I have tried a new ROM AND a new sd card and the problem persists!
how big is your media stick? brand?

sounds like you might have filesystem problems with the sd card? i suggest you copy all your stuff off it using the mount usb storage option in cwm (mounts and storage > usb), and then format /sdcard under cwm, or remove the card, format it under a windows computer, and reinsert it.
formatted the sd card (while connected to my PC and using the default FAT32 setting)
problem persists
I can view files via the my files app

I've had pretty good luck doing the following to fix strange errors:
Wipe data
Format system twice
Format data twice
Format cache twice
Run superwipe
Flash rom
Wipe cache and dalvik before first boot (this requires holding the volume buttons on the superlite 5 install at the appropriate time)
I'm sure this method is at least 50% superstition on my part, but it works for me every time.
I just want to state for anyone who ever reads this
I finally got the media scanner to work
Method
flashed through Odin original skyrocket leak
Flashed cwm
Ran super wipe
Flash ROM

I had the same problem, with a different ROM. I think there was something corrupt or messed up on the internal sd card, cuz after I moved everything to the computer, it worked fine. The one click worked because it wipes the emmc. I went straight from GB to a ICS rom, that's why I had a problem.

I woke up and found that somehow my wall paper had reset itself, and the media scanner was not working again. Thanks to what you said, I knew to format the Emmc and media scanner works again.
I did remove everything from the SD card to my PC and format the card a few days earlier but that didn't solve the problem.
It seems you understand what's going on. Could you explain a little more. I rather understand than just know to format emmc
Thanks
To be quite honest, I'm not 100% sure what causes media scanner to lock up. From what I read elsewhere on the internet, it could be a corrupt file, or maybe its just that ICS's media scanner handles files differently than GB's media scanner. I'm leaning more toward the latter, as GB media scanner never had a problem when running a GB ROM, and there is some reason as to why the one click ICS was designed to wipe the emmc (internal sd card).
Hope that helps clear any confusion!

My ROM does not have a format button in the settings, is there another way to format the internal SD space within Android itself?

Quite possibly, kinda. Are you rooted? If so, what recovery are you using? Most recoveries allow you to do this.
Why do u need to format within android? Why not just format from your pc?

this is correct, or as an alternative u could either a) hook it up to a computer, mount it and format, or b) use adb, but I recommend either a or the method gs2usr suggested
im gonna post in this thread instead of making a new one since im having a similar issue.
In CW recovery it'll tell me it cant mount my sd-ext and as well give me an error when trying to install a custom rom from my emmc, so do i need to do a format of both of those in order to get a custom rom to finally install again?
i've had this error ever since i switched back to rogers stock 4.0.4 to try it out
I'm getting errors in cwm too. How can I do it in ADB? Macs don't do fat32 correctly and I don't have a Windows machine.

Figured it out. Please try this and see if it fixes your internal aswell.
So go ahead if you don't have it, ADB install a copy of Root Explorer.
Go into the emmc folder and give it read and write permissions.
Now, in the settings, under storage, it should let you reformat the disk again and you should be okay.
I have no idea what's up with CWR, but we were told not to use it anymore on our Kindles due to it messing with partitions. But this is how I just fixed my Skyrocket, just in time for the fireworks tonight.
when in cwm, mount the emmc first

Hi, I want to install a new ROM, and is the first time I'm trying.
I've followed the steps correctly, and when I press the 3 button and it opens the Samsung recovery, I hit reinstall packages and it loads the orange cwm recovery.
Now this is where the problem begins.
I need to wipe data/factory reset, but when I hit it the phone freezes. (If I wipe on the phone it works, and on the samsung recovery it also works.)
If, on cwm recovery I wipe cache it works, partitioning on cwm recovery also works.
First this is what happened:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
E:format_volume: make:extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
I partitioned on Rom manager and this happened:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
E:format_volume failed to unmount "/cache"
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
I partitioned again on cwm recovery and this happened:
- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
It always freezes on "Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure..."
In all three cases.
I don't understand why, and my question is that after it freezes if I turn off the phone (by pressing the turn off button which works), and hit reinstall packages again, and clean cache and delvik cache and load the ROM, if it will work.
I don't know what more can I do..
Why are you partitioning your SD card so many times?
Because it wasn't working correctly?
btw, if I format the sd card, the partition will still remain, right?

Since CWM isn't partitioning correctly, try partitioning on your computer. This guide is helpful -> link. The ext partition should be 1024 MB (=1 GB) or 2048 MB (=2 GB) depending on how much space you want for apps. Swap should be 0 MB. The rest should be FAT32 for your storage. I personally only have two partitions, my FAT32 one and my EXT one, I don't have a SWAP partition.
Format should just erase the SD card, not the partitions, though I might be wrong.
I partition on the computer which didn't worked then I partitioned on the app rom manager but the maximum ext was 512 mb..so I went to partition on cwm recovery when booting..and put 2048 for ext and 0 for swap as you told me..
But if I delete the data on samsung recovery, and then boot CWM recovery, and wipe cache and the dalvik cache there, it's might work right?
thanks a lot.

When you say partition on computer didn't work, what do you mean? It didn't partition your SD card? Or it didn't solve the problems of the wipe freeze? I think you need to stop trying to partition it using so many different tools, erase all the partitions and start over on a computer. It should work, and if it doesn't then it might be a SD card issue.
Edit: Hmm, yeah that should work technically! I've asked on the ROM thread, lets see what they say.
When I partitioned on the computer the ext partition wasn't working right..the software didn't even recognise it..but I think that now it is rightly done..
Maybe tomorrow I'll try to wipe data on the samsung recovery, then I'll reinstall packages and on cwm I'll wipe cache and dalvik and then try to install the rom..maybe it will work..I hope so!

Ext is a Linux file system and Windows won't recognise it. I'd recommend a fresh partition (delete all partitions and then add in your FAT32 partition and EXT2/3/4 partition, making sure both are Primary partitions).
I actually partitioned both of mine as Fat32 and it works great

I think that now it is formated correctly. But the problem still remains.
I think I'll try to wipe the data on samsung recovery, and then complete on cwm recovery.
EDIT: so, I was wiping data and like always it friezed, so, I turned it off, and he turned on on samsung recovery, I pressed reinstall packages, and on cwm deleted cache and dalvik. Installed the rom, and it worked. The rom is functioning, and the problem I had with the "message not processed due to insufficient funds" disappeared. I think the rom is working right, but it doesn't vibrate when I receive sms, and the leds doesn't work either. Don't know if it's like that, I'll see on the rom thread.
Thanks a lot.

Glad you finally got it working I would highly recommend doing a reinstall using the new voodoo red CWM recovery after wiping all the data, etc ... just to make sure all of its completely wiped (reinstalling different ROMs sometimes leaves old data on different partitions and takes up space). You should also re-partition SD card just to be safe. But of course this is all optional, just my two cents
You need to play around with different settings. Like under Sound you'll have the Vibrate option set to Only on Silent, Always On, etc. On the SMS setting itself, you can set different ringtones, etc under setting. LED only works on Missed Calls and Charging atm. The only thing that doesn't work (for me anyway) is on some forms, like SMS To field, when you type a name it doesn't come up till you select it. This is a theme issue faced by everyone and there are no fixes atm. Did you install LEAN GOV or the full one? If you installed LEAN, mine didn't come with Google Search installed, download the apk from the internet and install. Using the Link2SD app (which I recommend for saving space) you can Press+Hold the Google Search app from your applications list and convert it into a Systems App. This lets you use the search button on keyboard and search widget as well! I also recommend ADW Launcher which you can install from the Play Store.
If you have any problems, don't hesitate to hit me up Click Thanks if something I said was helpful
Another app I would highly recommend installing ASAP is Titanium Backup. It'll save current versions of apps and data for you to as a backup to your sd card. It's really come in handy a number of times as I've tried new roms or switched back to an older version if an app comes out with a bad update.

Yes, I went on Sound and I put it on Vibrate Always. It doesn't work. The only way for me to know it I received an sms is on the top on the notifications. No even the messaging icon says that I have a sms. But that's ok. When I type a name to send a message the name doesn't came up either. That's a bit bad, by I can handle it! I installed the LEAN GOV-PERFORMANCE.
I'll see the rest that you talked about!
I installed adw launcher, but I don't know were it went. On the settings the "theme settings" doesn't work, and it says to force close.
Hi guys.
I want to start from scratch regarding my internal SD card (not using external) because I have a lot of junk that just needs to be gone.
I'm running Synergy's latest nightly and am going to flash a Jelly Bean ROM (don't know which yet) right after wiping everything.
So my question is, what do I do to make sure everything is wiped, and my phone still boots? I'm kind of lost.
I usually use CWM to flash, so what do I press in order to do this?
Thanks a lot.
You have to format the internal card with a filw explorer or in a recovery

Understood, but what happens when I try to reboot back into the phone; will it boot normally?
I ditto this question. I'm also curious about formatting my internal card and starting from scratch. I know factory reset from cwm recovery doesn't do it. I'm afraid to just start doing things and bricking this thing. Even though I was told by my cousin who has flashed many phone its very hard to hard brick a Samsung.

In all honesty I'm not sure if it will erase settings as well. I don't believe it will but some app settings are stored on the SD card so you may have to sign back into some things.
If you choose to factory reset at the same time then yes you will have to reset everything up.
One thing to keep in mind if you make your backups without selecting external SD card they will ask be erased so you will have no backups

Quick question, I just went into cwm recover then mounts and storage and the options are

Format /sdcard
Would sdcard be the internal sd card?
It sounds like that wipes everything (rom and all) and not just internal sd?

You just want to wipe internal? if you want to be safe, take out your external sdcard, then do format /sdcard . This will wipe your internal sdcard.
