Install a ROM with no SD card? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

You'll have to excuse my ignorance with phones that don't have an SD card slot...
I have a One X without a SD card slot. How would I go about installing a ROM after its rooted? I haven't rooted it yet... but I just like to know what I'm getting into before I do so. I rooted and flashed my Inspire 4G, but the bootloader menu said "Install from SD card". Will this one just work and use the internal storage as an SD card?

yes in fact if you look at the file system with a file manager you'll see that your internal storage is called /sdcard.

Gunny hit the nail on the head. Our phoned have a partitioned storage labeled as SD. It functions like a normal SD card.

Problem with SD Card after Flashing 2.2

Hey so I just decided to flash JI6 on my Captivate, and I noticed that my device wasn't showing any items on my SD Card. It sees my sd card, but doesn't see all the stuff thats on it. I've tried to unmount, reinstalling it, and restarting the device, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me? This is really annoying. I did make sure all my stuff was still on it by plugging it into my computer. I did a search for this before posting, and couldn't find anything about this happening. Thanks for any help.
I'm not an expert at flashing. But I seems to recall that you have to remove your SD card and SIM card before flashing ROM. Hopefully you removed the SD card before flashing...
Do you see both internal and external sd card? If you installed one of the i9000 based ROMs that have no SD card, you may only be seing your internal storage and not the external SD card at all.
2.2 changes the path to where the external SD card is stored. It is not the same as 2.1. I don't remember exactly, but 2.2 puts it under the /mnt directory and i don't think External is under internal anymore.
2.1 is /sdcard/sd for external
2.2 is /mnt/internal_sd (i think)

I think it should be ok. I have flashed ROMs like more than like 30 times so far, and I always had my external SD card sitting in there.

Some 9000 based ROMs have trouble with external sd. There are SD card fixes posted in those ROM threads itself. Apply them through CWM recovery console and you should be good.
I have attached one such sd card fix for 2.2.1 from "Doc's ROM JPY V6.1.3 CE" thread. If u r using a 2.2.1 based ROM, this could work for you.

Phone is asking for SD Card

I flashed my friends G2x Gingerbread with Clockworkmod via NVFlash. After that, I rooted the phone with jboxer's zip. I was going to install EaglesBlood rom but when I booted into recovery and tried making a backup, it said "Can't mount SD Card" and it didn't create the backup.
I had to go into ROM Manager and create the back up and install the rom through there.
Now that the ROM is flashed, I can't use the camera because it says "Please insert an SD card before using the camera."
Also, in the notification bar there is an SD card symbol with a "!" on it and it says "SD card removed. Insert a new one"
What made the phone ask for the SD Card? Was it CWM?

Which card? The internal one that comes with the phone? Because I have an SD card and I put it into my friends G2x and then I was able to use the camera and everything.
The problem is that it's asking for the SD card and without it, the camera doesn't work.
Is an SD card needed to create a backup and flash a new rom? Is there anyway to use the External SD that's in the phone?

The memory in the phone is the internal "sdcard" not the external one. Making backups requires a physical sd card. What good would be making backups to your phone memory and then your phone gets hosed and you cannot access that memeory anymore and poof, backups are gone. Without an sd card the camera should be able to use the internal memory. Check the settings in the camera and make sure it is set to use internal memory. Also, some roms switch the internal "sdcard" and physical sd card around, which can get real confusing. But in recovery the physical sd card is always where the backups go (at least as far as I understand it).
Yeah I got it now. Cm7 does switch the internal SD with the microsd that's why the camera wasn't working, but there's an option to switch them around

CM7 assumes you have a physical sd card and that you want it to be the main memory the phone uses for "sdcard". I personally prefer to leave it as is to avoid confusion. It is just that if you use internal memory and your phone gets borked, you lose everything in the internal memory (a common problem with Galaxy S devices).
Is there an option for this in the Miui (latest) rom? I am having the same problem.

Android Recovery That Supports External SD Card

Hey guys!
Is there any recovery tool like ClockWork recovery, that allows "install zip from external SD"?
Thanks in advance!
External SD? How would that work? Where would you put the sd?

"External" means not internal. Like memory card, the one you put to get extra memory on the phone.

But all Recovery tools work with sd card. Unless I'm misunderstanding something?
They don't instal recovery onto the sd card, but they can read and flash zip files from the sd card.

For some reason phone's original SD Card is not accessible... Tried copying the zip ROM from Mem Card to phone using ES Ecplorer, it failed...
Tried booting CM7 with ROM manager, it comes up with the following error:
"SD Card marker not found...
Error verfying extendedcommand
etc
"
Maybe you can help?
Sounds like your SD card may be corrupt in some way. I've seen that before. I suggest you copy everything off your sd card then format it, then copy everything back and try again

Formating doesn't work... It does not delete all the files...

[Q] Where is internal storage?

Ok yes this is very noob. I am trying to flash for the first time with my GS3.
Droidstyles guide says to copy ROM (in my case cleanrom) to "internal storage" all over the place. When I look at the phone connected to my computer, i get an option for "Phone" and "Card".
I would assume that phone was internal and card is external SD card.
But in all the times I flashed on my Samsung Moment it was always a Zip from the external SD card.
I have searched and not coming up with it, sorry for the noob question. Just want to get it right...

Phone is internal and card is external. That being said you can flash from external as long as it is formatted to Fat32. The recoveries do not support extFat on external card and do not see it. Once Fat32 can flash as you always have.
Thanks! One more successful root for a Noob! Running cleanrom:victory:
Prdog is correct and thats the reason why i say to use internal sd in my guide...not everybody has a external sd and/or has it formatted to fat32.

[Q] SD Card and Internal Memory Questions [SORRY]

Okay, so I am just tired of the confusion in my head here.
I'm not a noob with rooting or anything of the sort, but I am not used to a phone with an internal SD card and an external SD card.
I am downloading a ROM to flash to my Galaxy S3 and it saves to the SD card... does that mean that it is saving to the phones memory and not the actual SD card I put into it?
There is an SD Card and an external SD card.
Which one is which? Haha.
And if I am right, like I think I am... the external SD card is the actual SD card I put into it and the SD Card is the phones internal memory.
How can I download from the internet and have it save onto the external SD?
AND...
When backing up a ROM before flashing a new one, do you recommend that I back up to SD card or external SD card?
And do you recommend I flash a ROM from the SD card or from the external SD card?
It seems that IF my external SD card somehow decided to corrupt while I was running off of a ROM that was installed via external SD card, that it wouldn't be able to boot after it corrupted.
Am I correct on all of this?
Sorry. Your answers are more than appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
I have mine setup to download the roms, pictures, media or backups to the external sd card. In cwm I save a backup to both internal and external for the extra security. I just use external for everything because I have a 32gb sd card that has everything. The internal memory is just used for system stuff.

Perfect. That's absolutely everything I needed to know. I guess no matter what you download from the browser, it will download to the internal memory... but you can manually move it to the external SD with Root Browser.
Thank you man.

Go into the advanced settings option on your Browser and it gives you the option to have things downloaded to memory card or internal. Just change that to memory card and it will do it for you.
