I constantly hear "keyboard dock this, and keyboard dock that. I bought this because it's a kick a** tablet. I don't want a net book. Hell, i could've gotten one of those cheaper.

I have my tablet without the dock and a nice case that has various angles to view the tablet at. I also have a Bluetooth Microsoft keyboard that I use with my tablet when I am too lazy to sit at the computer to type something out or stuff like that. But without the dock and loving it!

The only thing that tempted me to the keyboard was the extra battery, I went for the Anker Astro 3 instead. The keyboard would be nice but at more than £100 and at the risk of getting a screen breaker its not worth it.
My TF201 (which was a "good" one except for the GPS) was a great stand alone tablet without the dock. I used it like that most of the time I had it. I only picked up the dock when it went on sale at Best Buy as they were closing them out.
But, now that I have a dock, I love it. I still frequently use the 700 as a tablet undocked for reading or travel all the time, that convertibility is one of the most awesome things about the TF series and they are GREAT tablets all by themselves.
I have the keyboard dock but I usually use my tablet standalone. It's awesome either way.

No dock and really don't see the need. Like you , I wanted a tablet not a netbook!
I think that if you guys had the dock for a day, you'd never go back! Not only does it make typing *so* much easier, it's also like a built in stand for the tablet! Not to mention the extra ports, extra battery life and the fact that you can see the *whole* screen while typing (instead of the keyboard taking up half the screen).
You can always remove the tablet *very* easily to go back to being a tablet, but you'll find that most of the time, you simply leave it docked so you don't even have to hold the tablet while using it!
Again, you may not think you'd use it, until you actually have it for a day or two...

Had the doc and never used it. Sold my Prime + Doc and purchased an Infinity without the doc and that will be my setup going forward.

I love to use mine in portrait, which with the high res screen is very comfortable and provides tons of viewing real estate.
I might pick up the dock when it goes on sale for easier video chatting, movie viewing and typing, but 95% of my use is browsing and it's very comfortable holding it in portrait doing that.
Me happy.

I have USB adapter, extra micro cards, and USB micro reader. I've hooked up a 320 GB HDD, used flash drives, all kinds of stuff. And for typing, i use Swype and a stylus.

I know these things *can* be done without the dock, but nowhere near the ease that they can be done with the dock... Trust me, I've tried! The dock just makes everything that much easier... It's completely changes how useful the tablet really is. There is *no way* that you can enter text as quickly and easily with a stylus as you can with a keyboard - period.
I guess it all boils down to what you use your tablet for. I take a *lot* of notes at work and it would be a disaster without the dock (I simply wouln't use it at work without the dock - it just wouldn't make much sense). If you just use it casually to play games and surf the web, I can see the dock not being needed, but if you do any kind of emailing or note-taking (or even posting on XDA), the dock just makes it that much faster and easier. To be honest, I personally leave it docked even while playing a lot of games!

Just read "is not compatible with Asus tablets." How does it work in real life?
I use my tablet all the time without the dock and absolutely love it. The only time I use the dock really is when I'm taking notes, since I could never really get the hang of fast screen typing, watching movies, or recharging the battery. One of the nicest things is having the keyboard charging up while I use the tablet, then dock up and recharge the tablet while still using it.

Hi guys, is the dock really worth the price point? Do you think its a must have accessory for the transformer? How have the dock improved your whole experience with the transformer? I have about $100 amazon gift credits left after selling my text books.

I also debated about getting the dock. I believed I could really use it for school, so I bought it, but there were a few complictions non-device related. I then debated about returning it, but every aspect about it is amazing to me.
At night I throw my transformer on the dock and let them both charge fully, I wake up in the morning and throw my transformer and dock into my backpack, just in case I have a class where the notes are just extremely long. During free periods I pull it out and just mess around(I am a high school student). I dont get home until late every day so my tablet easily last all day.
From here I will just list the benefits, lol.
My transformer has been used down to 50% I reach in my bag and throw it on th dock, leave and come back my tablet is juiced and ready to go.
I want to browse the web fo a while, so I throw on the dock and get typing...i hate using the on-screen keyboard sometimes.
I open up XDA and browse a couple tablet forums and read their woes and trolls, and sometimes respond...with the keyboard.
I have a file on a flash drive or on my Phone and I want it on my transformer quickly to view and edit...(usb ports help out here)
The quick hotkeys at the top of the keyboard on the dock are amazing, I am always using one of those for something every minute.
Touchpad does not get used much due to having a display that can be touched

+1. Agree 100% with both these posts. I personally tested 3 other tablets and the dock with all the niceties it adds was the selling point on th TF for me. 4 others at my work have bought TF and all have the dock.
Get the dock! I didn't want to spend more money to get it as I thought I wouldn't use it much. But once I got it I use it all the time, the extra battery, using the dock to hold as a stand and plugging a usb mouse were the main reasons I got it.
At first (I ordered the TF the DAY it was released) I wasnt going to get the dock, I figured it's a tablet if I need a kb I'll use my netbook or laptop.. So then I got the dock on sale (when they were selling like hotcakes) and snatched it up for the deal.. plus I figured even if I didn't use it I had a spare battery, plus a nice little way to prop up the tablet in bed.... fast forward to today.. I use the dock just as much as the tablet by itself. Because of the dock, I now use my tablet in ways I would never if I had not had the dock. I now keep all my class notes on it (using ever note) which makes reading them on the go easy(without the dock) and makes taking notes during class much easier. I really do now find the dock VERY useful.. It pretty much has replaced my netbook (dell duo netbook/tablet)
So I would say yes, in the long run the dock is most certainly worth the price (in my situation it was)
oh wow! Thank you so much for the informative responds. I will definitely get it! I still have few questions. Does it lag when you type on websites like it does on the screen keyboard? I use a chromebook for school. Hows the weight compared tot the chromebook? And can you easily peel off that sticker on the keyboard? Because sometimes its hard to take that off in some laptops and it will leave a mark.
Ok, I love my TF. And I mean it is awesome. And just being to get a Dock/Keyboard is very cool too..
But I am having a hard time buying the keyboard/. Yes I know all the advantages. But this is what my wife says about it. If you wanted a laptop, then why did you get a tablet?
I have no way of arguing with her on this point. But I would use it if I bought one.
So can you guys give me some advice to help me decide?

Try to show herramientas that with a keyboard you have the best of two worlds. A laptop for some situations a tablet for other.

I enjoy having the keyboard dock simply because it bridges the gap between a tablet and a netbook. In addition to all the features it offers typing is so much more convenient while still experiencing the touch screen of the tab itself (whenever I use mine or my wife's laptop I actually try to scroll on the screen...).
You can ask your wife to remove the screen from a netbook when you want to use it separately . I'd say go for it! According to ASUS it will also be compatible for future tablets.
Now having the keyboard dock, I wish i didn't. I wish i would have picked up a good bt keyboard that i could interchange with my cellphone/htpc/future cell./future tablet. my .02
It all comes down to what your main purpose/use for the dock is. I personally like that you can hook up external drives etc. without issues, take screenshots, have dedicated android shortcuts and so on. I had a BT keyboard for my XOOM but it wasn't that great (admittedly, it was a cheap generic Apple keyboard that I taught some android shortcuts). If it's just for the sake of typing on a keyboard then yes, maybe it's better to get a good wireless (BT) keyboard that works with other BT devices. If you want connectivity and expandability then the dock is the best (only?) solution.

For me, I enjoyed using the tablet only. I got the keyboard/dock so I could type faster, and keep the tablet charged. Sometimes I use the USB & SD slots, too.
What happens now: I leave the tablet in the dock most of the time. I only disconnect the tablet when I want to read or play something that works better without a keyboard/dock.
The dock transforms your use from primary tablet, to primary tablet/dock. HTH.
One of the ways I justified it is that with any other tablet you have to buy a BT keyboard anyways, and in addition the dock when folded PROTECTS the tab's glass, basically eliminating the need for a case or sleeve

I make good use of the extra USB, SD, and battery so its really justified for me.
And +1 to fldude99 about protecting the glass. If you think it will benefit you for what you do with the tab then get it. I for one, love it.
I decided to go ahead and get one. Found a brand new one for $123.00. I can always use it on the next transformer I get that happens to have a number 2 next to it.
good for you, oh, and a word of advice, you might like to know what one would do about the weird trackpad and scrolling problems, and that is this: get a usb mouse... It works great with the dock and makes for the full "netbook" experience. (I would go for a wired one though because I occassionally have problems with my wireless one)

Considering I got my TF + Dock for $230 shipped brand new, Im thrilled with this thing. The dock is amazing because it gives you the flexibility to work or play. It's very portable with or without the dock, but I usually take just the TF with me when I go places and I dock it the second I get home. Not to mention the extra battery life is a blessing. I say go for it man, you won't regret it.

(1) Laptop battery doesn't last 16 hours.
(2) Laptop can't transform into a tablet when you just want a tablet.
(3) Laptop doesn't have multi-touch capacitive screen.
(4) Laptop feels like an anchor.
Just a few off the top of my head.
I've found that people, ipad users in particular, have a hard time understanding choice. To them the issue is whether you want a tablet or a laptop. What if you want both but don't want to carry a laptop and a tablet around?
Earlier today someone on the train asked me just this question. She was crazy about her ipad 2. So, we talked about our tablets because she was curious about what I have. The question inevitably came up. Why didn't I just get a laptop? I gave her my short answer, which was "I like having the choice to either have a laptop or a tablet". She just gave me a blank look.
This goes back to what I've been saying for months. Apple has done a very good job at convincing people that you cannot be productive with your ipad. You need a laptop for that, preferably the macbook air. So, this woman, like so many others I've talked to, was puzzled why I wanted to do work with my tablet. She couldn't imagine typing for too long on her ipad because the softkeys are just horrible to type on if you're doing substantial typing. Even after I plugged my Tf into the dock, she still had trouble understanding how I could work with a tablet. I had to show her some documents I had put together on nothing but the TF and my powerpoint presentation.
By the time she got up to get off the train at her stop, I still got the feeling that she was still not convinced you could be useful with the tablet platform.
Last month, ,I read an article that claimed the author believed strongy the future will belong to the tablet-notebook hybrids. I guess only time will tell. I agree with that article, though.
i damaged my tablet by packing it with an extension cord for a flight - the prongs dug deep into the screen and damaged it somewhat - d'oh
so i picked up the keyboard primarily so that it could protect the screen
what i got was a keyboard that seems even better made than the tablet
i like the keyboard too for note-taking or long emails, while keeping the tactile yumminess of a touchscreen

I'm finding that i don't use the dock a lot...
Really depends what I'm up to. When I'm web surfing I do a lot of commenting in forums like this one, and on those occasions, using the on-screen keyboard is maddening after a while. But there are times I mostly want to read, and on those occasions un-docking the tablet and propping it in my lap while I lay on the couch is a more enjoyable way of using it. When I'm gaming I tend to use it off-dock, but that's mostly because most Android games are optimized for touch screen. I'm hopeful we'll get some good first person shooters that work well with keyboard and mouse.
35% keyboard dock 65% tablet. When I need to type alot I put it in the dock.
Mostly undocked, some of that is because I have a couple of games that force portrait.
I use the dock when I am using the tablet more like a laptop.
90% of the time in the dock, 10% out. I treat it more like a netbook than a tablet
It comes out of the dock only when I want to take pictures with it
Off dock almost all the time, its meant to be a tablet, so I use it that way most of the time. I read allot of comics on it and I like holding it like a magazine. Plus the on-screen keyboard is enough to do most basic tasks. If I really plan on doing allot of typing (and dont want to use my main PC or laptop) thats when I dock it.
Try the thumb keyboard from market (paid app)...it makes typing a breeze

Toghether with this thread, and just looking around, I decided to order my 300T without a dock as I think I wont be using it that often.
95% in dock, most of that time the dock is used to just hold up the tablet for video viewing.
I'd say I'm about 50/50. If I'm going to do a lot of typing I'll dock it. But most of the regular viewing is off dock.

I would say mine is in the dock about 55% of the time. I like to carry it around in the dock as I pretend it offers some protection for it, and the extra battery is wonderful. I like to pretend it is my netbook half the time. I take notes in classes on it and work on papers on it. Occasionally I will come up to a place to type something and it is always nice to have around for something longer then your basic notes. I usually take it out for reading and watching videos after I get them started. With some flash videos, it is easier to just use the touchpad. One thing I will say is that I am surprised I don't use the touchpad more, but hey touching is just nicer.
Hard to say really.
When inputting text that's of any real length I'll whack it in the dock, but when I'm mobile and around my workplace I'll detach it to save on weight (and to save my arms! The thing is quite weighty when docked and in a case!).
I do wish the dock had a bit more in the way of battery capacity as it depletes quite quickly.

And I quote: "* The Transformer Pad Infinity mobile dock is compatible with Eee Pad Transformer Prime. (The Eee Pad Transformer Prime mobile dock is NOT compatible with Transformer Pad Infinity)"
I know many people have stated otherwise, and if I remember correctly engadget even tried it out. But the official site clearly states that the prime dock will not work on the infinity.

I can confirm the dock for the TF201 works perfectly with my TF700T
But... the colors are not quite the same... I have a grey TF700T and the grey of the TF201 dock is a lot darker and purple than the tablet
I can also confirm. I bought a dockless TF700 and a TF201 dock, they worked together flawlessly form the start.

How is the color?
Every review/unboxing video ive seen on youtube had a prime dock. And as you might know that stuff gets sent to them by Asus themselves. So I'd take that compatibility-sentence on their homepage with a grain of salt. Thats basically them trying to make even more money off the uninformed people (which is like 85% of the customers).
If I didnt already preorder the whole package (dock/tablet) i would have bought the prime dock. I might even sell my infinity dock and get the prime one if it really gives more battery and the colour aint significantly different from the tablet.

Another thing I just saw now... the tablet and the dock don't fit perfectly. There is a gap like 2-3mm where the tablet is more to the front

It seems some early adopters are getting the Infinity bundled with the old Keyboard. I saw a picture in the post above and the prime keyboard doesn´t sit too well on the infinity when closed/clapped together.
Can someone who bought both tablet and dock confirm if this is true?

I got mine today and can confirm it.
My TF700T came with a TF201 Dock (bundled that way by Asus, I guess).
After looking at that picture above I saw that my combination also shows that small gap, but Its such a minor difference that my guess is that it's meant that way.
I think the real infinity dock might show that gap too because it fits perfectly on any other part. The gap seems to come from the rubber spacer left and right of the keyboard.
But who cares for these minor differences? Personally I'd prefere the old Dock because the battery is stronger and all other specs are excactly the same. **
** comparing the specs at Asus' website it seems the new dock will be 1cm thinner but 20g heavier AND has the smaller battery, so I concider myself lucky to get the old one

The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of buying the dock, but I'm a bit unsure wether this is a "need" or a "want". I get that if you're a writer/columnist, a keyboard dock is great, but it'd be nice to get some personal opinions from others on wether the dock turned out to be a "must have" in everyday use or if it's really just an appendage to get more battery life so to speak.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking of buying the dock, but I'm a bit unsure wether this is a "need" or a "want". I get that if you're a writer/columnist, a keyboard dock is great, but it'd be nice to get some personal opinions from others on wether the dock turned out to be a "must have" in everyday use or if it's really just an appendage to get more battery life so to speak.

It's really nice as an extra charger while on the run. Plus a full USB port and a full SD card slot are a great addition when moving larger amounts of data. But what makes in more like a laptop is the keyboard itself. I wouldn't be excited with the Infinity so much if not for the keyboard (the HD screen itself is great for sure, but still...). Touch screen is fun, but writting longer texts on it is pain for me (especially as it's not 100% responsive while typing fast, which I'm used to), I need a real keyboard, and the 93% keyboard is really fine (the right shift could be bigger, but hey... it's 10" and it's pretty easy to get accustomed!). On the other hand, I'll try to play with some non-standard keyboards during this weekend (the GO Keyboard was OK, but unfortunately not compatible with the dock) - on my list are LogiType, FloatNSplit, Thumb, SlideIT, Smart, Swiftkey and TouchPal keyboards, so a lot of testing to do...
BTW, I've just bought some cheap stylus (~3 EUR) to test the whole idea and it's great!

So it seems that the dock will be a little different to get used to in terms of keyboard, but the quality is pretty good?
I'm planning on taking notes on this thing as a replacement for the dismal battery performance on my laptop, and the fact that it's lighter, thinner, and I can use a stylus to take notes as well.

Sure, the quality is good, but it is not that much different than getting used to any netbook / small laptop keyboard. I am using the TF201 docking station, as this was the one I got bundled with TF700, BTW, but I believe it is not that much different from the upcoming "TF700 dedicated keyboard".
I'm planning on taking notes on this thing as a replacement for the dismal battery performance on my laptop, and the fact that it's lighter, thinner, and I can use a stylus to take notes as well.

Sure, and SuperNote is way more fun than typing!
I only don't like Polaris Office, I will be using either the free Kingsoft office suite (which is really great) or - if I decide to spend some more money - OfficeSuite Pro 6, which seems the most convenient for me so far. You should definitely give it a try if you want the Infinity to work as a replacement for your laptop.

I think I have a couple office applications already. Is SuperNote the bundled application with the tablet? I type much faster than I write, so I'm planning on just using the stylus for notes that I can't type (i.e. Math). Luckily for me, this semester I don't have a math class though....a lot of critical thinking classes like Philosophical Reasoning, Social Problems, and Beauty and Creativity. Stuff I'll need to take notes for of course, and this tablet will be incredibly helpful for doing that.
Now I have to figure out if buying the TF700 dock is the right idea, or buying the TF201 one is better.

I really like your set of classes, although the Beauty thing feels pretty unnerving ;>
And yes, SuperNote is bundled, as well as many other apps. See some reviews on YouTube or on the tech websites, many of them mentioned it already.
I cannot help you with the docking options, as I only got to use the TF201 one. If I had an option to choose, I would prefer to lay my hands on both IRL. It's a very personal thing, so I don't think that the reviews can answer it for you.
When sliding my tablet into the (bundled prime-)dock, the lock only jumps back to the middle position and has to be manually moved to the right/lock-position. I have read that this may be an issue with defunct docks and that these should be returned. Is that true? Or are all old prime docks "affected", making a return superfluous?
So far, it doesn't bother me too much, but I just want to make sure everything works as planned.

I think it's just the slight difference in size between the Prime and the Infinity. I've also observed this on my Prime dock + Infinity tablet bundle, sometime it clicks, sometime it's stuck half-way, but the tablet is docked normally, so it's only the lock/slider that has to be adjusted. For me certainly not a flaw which would justify returning it. But if you hope for a TF700 dock in return, you can try (possibly with more luck in a few weeks, when the latter is widely available?)
I've just bought a TF700 pad and it works fine with my TF201 docking station. I haven't noticed any inconsistency in colours or size (but then again, I'm not the kind of person for which that matters - as long as it works, it could be in Yellow and Green colours for all I care).
However, I have noticed one curious thing, that I would like some input on. I had bought a 64 Gb MicroSD card ( amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-microSDXC-Adapter-SDSDQUA-064G-U46A/dp/B007WTAJTO/ref=sr_1_4 ), and it works perfectly in my Asus Eed Pad Transformer Prime TF201 pad, but I am unable to make it work in the TF700 pad.
I have tried formatting it to FAT32, exFAT and NTFS with variying cluster sizes, and when I insert it into the TF700 pad, the "Preparing external storage" message flashes on the screen for a very brief instant, and then nothing - no card is available.
That surprised me quite a bit, as I expected the hardware support to be the same in the TF700 as in the TF201, but it seems like there is a different USB hardware part in the TF700 than in the TF201.
My 128 Gb SD Card ( amazon.com/Sandisk-Extreme-Memory-45MBps-Speeds/dp/B006ZH1WVS/ref=sr_1_1 ) in the docking station (formatted to FAT32) works with both pads connected (which was expected, as the hardware is the same in this instance).
Does anyone have success with a 64 Gb MicroSD card in the TF700 pad? If so, which one is it, and how is the card formatted?

I am thinking of buying the keyboard. Does it just work for text input anywhere the onscreen keyboard shows up? Email is the obvious use but what else is it good for... which doc editor does it really shine with?

It "just works" everywhere. It's completely seamless - all apps work with the keyboard by default.
I probably keep my Infinity docked 90% of the time (if not more) - it also works great as a stand for the device for when you are watching videos, etc...
The only downside is that I find myself constantly trying to "touch" my laptop screen when at work (I have a regular work-supplied laptop that I use at work, along with my Infinity, which I mainly use for note-taking while at work)....

Ya i'd say the reason i got the transformer is because of the keyboard. I use it 99% of the time while docked. Use the dock for USB, use it for the full sized SD cardslot, use it for the keyboard, hell even some java heavy sites i use it for the touchpad for those "mouse hover" things in the web browser.
Its great for keeping the tablet standing up when your watching a movie or video chatting
I also have the problem where now i always go to touch screens of laptops because im used to touching links or icons on my tablet XD
Oh! and dont forget the extra battery capacity!
All in all, $150 is a bit steep for the keyboard dock, see if you can get an opened box for closer to $100 and its a great deal!
I use my Infinity keyboard to chop sandwiches in half.
I had the keyboard for my TF101 and never used the dock for anything more than a stand, a USB port and an extended battery. Now that I own a backpack with a 6000mAH battery built into it, a leather case that acts well as a stand, and the USB kit, I get all the same functionality without the added bulk or weight of the keyboard dock. Plus I have my trusted Motorola Bluetooth keyboard in case I ever want to use a keyboard on my Infinity.
My suggestion, buy the keyboard dock and try it. Its not for everyone.

Do you mean a backpack, the kind you throw over your shoulder, with a battery sewn into it? You run a cable between your backpack and the tablet? Or something that attaches to the back of the tablet? I don't know of this product.

My backpack is a PowerPack Deluxe Backpack. http://www.mypowerbag.com/backpacks/backpack-6000.html
The company produces a handful of backpacks, messenger bags and even some briefcases all with a battery and charge cables built right into the bag. They are expensive though. I would recommend buying it from Amazon, my Deluxe bag was like $35 cheaper there.

A word of warning about my backpack though... it maxes out at 500mA charging power. Every tablet I have seen uses a 1000mA charger, including the Infinity and the TF300 (most cell phones charge at ~500mA). The backpack will in fact charge my Infinity but I can't be using the tablet, it must be in the Power Save mode and the screen must be asleep. It takes a while too but I does charge it.
I personally don't travel enough to have a problem with it but I can see why my backpack solution isn't great for everyone. I mostly use my backpack for charging my Galaxy Nexus, not any tablets but I do know of works. You could always buy some sort of portable charger/battery that is standalone and put it in whatever bag you have already. It would be cheaper and you may be able to find one that charges devices at 1000mA. If I had to do it over again, the standalone battery idea would be very tempting.

As a writer, I use the keyboard a lot. Personally I use Kingsoft Office. It does have a bit of a "Oi, Slow the bloody hell down silly woman!" issue when I get over 100 words per minute, but other than that it works fine.
The keyboard works everywhere, and pretty much like a normal keyboard.
Typing on the homescreen makes Google Search search for your entry both online and internally.
The arrow keys can be used to navigate between the homescreens and the items. Enter launches the selected app.
Every app supports the keyboard, where there is a point. (Games like angry birds are obviously not about a keyboard.)
Most videoplayers can be controlled with the keys. (BS, MX) (spacebar for pause, etc) This makes us all OCD a bit less over the screen cleanness.
It also makes a very useful stand for watching videos, or when don't want to hold it and prefer to rest it on your lap. (Since there's no heatable hardware in the keyboard, it doesn't overheat the way a laptop would.) Since you can rest it on a table, you can easily plug in an external harddrive and run larger films from that.
And the extra battery is a real treasure.
And it's a fantastic screen protector during travel, since it folds like a laptop.
