Hello all,
I have an interesting problem I would love some information about. I recently bought an Asus Transformer Pad (TF300T). I have already unlocked the bootloader via the Asus utility, flashed TWRP recovery, and rooted it. Now I'm interested in the possibility of dual-booting.
I know that Ubuntu has support for ARM, but I have no experience installing something like that on a device like this. Ideally, I would install Ubuntu (or another Linux distro that supports ARM) to the external SD card and be able to choose at boot time to boot into Ubuntu or into Android. I have seen that some people did something like this on the TF101, but I don't know if that would still work.
If anyone has any ideas about this, I would appreciate hearing them.

hi to help to answer your question, if im correct because we do not have much support for building custom kernels to support dual booting into linux, that is a reason why currently there is zero support towards this feature, but there are alternatives, here is a link

this link has an application to install linux on your asus tf300t tablet, it is confirmed to work with stock, but has not been tested on a custom rom, this is using the CHRoot method, aka running next to android requiring a vnc viewer to be used to view it and interact with it. this is not a dual boot, until developers on here can get a JB custom kernel that supports dual booting, there will simply be no possibility, plus we do not even have finished NVFlash files yet to help doing this/ unbrick our tablets. i hope this helped, if it did please hit the thx button below

I have been unable to get Frank'sTools to Run through Windows, or Successfully use OliFE through Linux on my PC.
With OLiFE, Once I enter that I wish to Dualboot in the 2. Flash option, Nothing happens. Though it says it should ask me which system should be default etc. I have gone through the sh files and have tried to tweak them a bit to get the scripts to work, but nothing has worked.
There is a guide here for the TF201 which I am thinking of trying but you have to flash the boot.img whenever you want to switch between the OS by the look of it.
Not sure if it is worth trying though. The main reason why I want Linux is so that I can run DSUME since the current DS Emulator for Android isn't fantastic yet. (Good job so far though guys)
If Anyone has any ideas for how to Dual boot the TF300T, please let me know!!! I don't want to run linux through Android as this would be terrible for emulation
P.S. I am still a complete noob at all of this

is there already a working kernel for the TF300T supporting loop devices to run Linux in a shell and accessing it via VNC?
I already tried Asus builds .17, .26, .29 as well as Cyanogen 9 experimental but evertime i tried, loop device creation failed.
It would be awesome to run Linux on the Transformer

You're not the only one who would like this. One of the reasons I'm considering getting a keyboard dock is to run this very setup.

All you need is root.
On WW, that is, but it would be strange if the other originals haven't got the same kernel.

It works now for me. Seems .29 build has workin loop devices. In my case the bootscript for the ubuntu image was faulty (it contained wrong paths to busybox).

There's a guy that has been quite successful with the Prime -- Google: androiroot mobi ubuntu
His latest Ubuntu-related post was on June 16. I'm not sure if he's done any work on it since.
i'm also VERY interested in this. googled for a while but couldn't find a tutorial suited for a noob like me.
seems like the bootloader has to be modified? and nvflash to create the needed partitions for multiboot?

I heard that TF201 already has an Ubuntu ported to it. I think that Ubuntu will provide some functions, that can't provide Android, I really need "Terminal" on my device and Python language, "Synaptic" and many other...

I have a TF300T on 4.1.1, I was looking into dual booting with ubuntu & found out I needed an NVFlashable rom, then I found here I needed pre-JB. I had flashed roms before except I flashed back to stock (latest on asus website around 12/14/12) to use my cable providers TV application.
Which gave me the idea of flashing back to pre-jb...(would that even work...?) **I know that JB would update something other then the kernel (though I wouldnt know what since its not a phone and doesnt have basebands for each OS ver, unless it does....)
Either way, if any of you are using a TF300T dualbooted like the TF101 any information would help! Guide links, etc...anything that can be done via PC or MAC.
It would be great to do this as soon as possible as its a laptop replacement for class,

At this time you can't go backward from JB unless you had installed Nvflash and made the proper backups while still on ICS. It has been tried many times and many ways.
There is an arch linux in the developer section (dual boot). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918849
You have to unlock your tablet to use it. When you unlock you give up your warranty and support from Asus.
I have not tried Arch for sometime. When I tried in the past I was not pleased, my normal operating system (on my pc) is Ubuntu 11.10.

Its unfortunate, as long as arch is not bloated and clean...I suppose it might be fine. I couldn't stick to ICS even if I wanted to as my pad came with JB installed (White model; September).

I suggest you read carefully the arch linux thread. I still don't find it a daily answer.
What do you wish to accomplish with your tablet that stock dosen't allow?

Simple things such as accessing steam & keeping up with my server nodes *Viewing information, Status, Etc (which I haven't found an app for that is not complete garbage) Theres stuff like connectbot for ssh & telnet but not what I need. Might just have to end up selling tablet for a cheap laptop or something.

As luck would have it I am running a 13 inch Macbook Air.
I run Ubuntu 11.10 on the internal sdd and have OSX 10.6 and OSX 10.7 on external usb drives.
To get the fans to operate properly download the mac 64bit version and you should be good.

Battery life is not as quite good as on OSX but respectable.

So here I am wanting to break the installed version of ICS on my tablet... I followed the general guidelines on how to root and install the new OS (Revolution). I get myself to this point where I have the zip file on my MSD card and I go to the Power up and - volume to enter into the set up and I have 2 options, one is to boot from the current version I believe that it is a linux version) and the second is the ASUS Recovery image.
I think that I have the one that I can not be changed, is this true? Am I doing something wrong (should I have the TF101 attached by USB to the computer while I am doing this)? Is it possible to change the OS by expanding the zip file into the respective folders and attempt a reboot or will this process create a brick? I am interested in playing with the Ubuntu OS on my tablet too, just to get some experience, I am the computer guy in my area and I have a lot of people that I have talked into the TF101 since it came out and they have been asking if I can figure out this.

Check the bottom of the tablet near the port normally it says there or check and see if you have 3g setting if you do then 3g from if not ur wifi only

You need to root and flash a custom recovery before you can flash a custom ROM
Once you have done that, you can then do what you just did, only this time you will enter a recovery capable of flashing custom ROMs, the stock ASUS Recovery can not
Use this to root and flash recovery - this can flash both SBK1 & 2 version of the TF101 so no need to worry about that

Then follow the ROMs instructions to flash inside of recovery
Also look at the serial number of your TF101, Does it start with B60 or lower (sbkv1) or b70 or higher or a c? (Sbkv2).
Is it 3G? (NvFlash won't work Sbkv3/???)
Is it a slider? (Also won't work)
Afaik it's only those 3 variants for the TF101
You can also use my PERI tool for an easy recovery install, then place the Rom zipfile you want to install on the sdcard and use the new recovery to flash it.
Dl peri (Link in my signature) then run and plug in tablet, will install recovery, then place rom zip and flash in recovery... Easy peasy.
Okay, i already rooted my tablet so i am that far, I am going to create a custom recovery now (I didn't know that, so thank you). My tablet starts with b70 so it is one of those crossover ones. I am not famillar enough with Perl to be effective with it but if all else fails I will follow your instructions and thank you, too (if i need help with that can I PM you?
I had to work the past couple of days and i have off tomorrow so I will be attempting it Wednesday and I will keep you all posted.
Now any suggestions on which OS I should start with? I was thinking about Revolution, however I am a little partial to Ubuntu since I have it a my second OS on my laptop.

Hey Everyone, it took a couple of days but I finally got it to work... I used the One-Touch program for windows and it was a piece of cake. I actually had it up and running a few weeks ago and I have been running Revolution. I need to back up this edition and I am going to try out Tubuntu next week just to get some experience with the different OS's.

Hello, I just got a new phone. It's probably my first actual phone in many years, as I'm mostly a PC kind of guy. I have been having trouble getting it booted for a while now. Someone informed me that it might be an Axia phone from AT&T, but I don't know the validity of that. It says Q-Innovations every time I use it on Google stuff. Does anyone here know of the phone or know how to boot one?

The model number seems to be the AT&T version of that phone.
When you say that you can't get it booted, what do you mean exactly? What is the device doing when you try to boot it?
Have you tried holding volume up+power(let go when you see the splash screen) to boot into recovery, then factory reset and wipe cache partition?
Some devices have to hold volume down+power, then at the bootloader menu, choose the recovery option.

I think you need to do some research to get familiar with how android devices actually work. Android devices are not like PC, you can't just install whatever OS you want, android devices are not "generic" like that. Operating systems for android devices have to be built specifically based on the hardware in the device, down to the kernel level, the kernel has to be specific to the device. You need to do some reading about how android stock recovery and custom recovery actually work , you also need to research how android stock firmware and custom operating systems are flashed on android devices.
It is "possible" to remove android and install Linux on an android device, but only certain devices can do it, depending on the security built-in to the bootloader that is installed on the device. There isn't a universal way to install Linux on android.
It is also possible to install Linux on top of android in a sort of emulator/VM then use a VNC to .
There are some apps to install linux on top of android, such as:
1) Linux Deploy
2) Complete Linux installer
3) UserLAnd
I installed and tested UserLAnd last night. Try this and see what you think.
