Dualboot- Android/Ubuntu - Asus Transformer TF700

Hey,
I've been waiting long enough with installing Ubuntu on my device.. With the bootloader unlocked it's quite possible now, right?
Could someone maybe provide som links with info on the subject?
Cheers.

Worth bumping?
Is it even possible yet? Does it differ that much from installing it on TF201?

I also can't wait to (dual) boot this fine piece of machinery with Ubuntu.
There's a guy that has been quite successful with the Prime -- Google: androiroot mobi ubuntu
His latest Ubuntu-related post was on June 16. I'm not sure if he's done any work on it since.

i'm also VERY interested in this. googled for a while but couldn't find a tutorial suited for a noob like me.
seems like the bootloader has to be modified? and nvflash to create the needed partitions for multiboot?

Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? and if so how did you do it?
Thanks,

I really want to get my tf700 setup in a dual boot set up, but I am a noob when it comes to rooting and modifying android: so I would need a though tutorial.

About Asus TF700
Hello everybody!
Anybody have a progress in dual boot Ubuntu and Android?
Or maybe someone can install Ubuntu or other Linux OS to greatest device ever created by Asus - TF700???
I heard that TF201 already has an Ubuntu ported to it. I think that Ubuntu will provide some functions, that can't provide Android, I really need "Terminal" on my device and Python language, "Synaptic" and many other...
Please do someting that many users all over the world have an opportunity to install Ubuntu on Asus TF700!!!

[Q] Loop Device Kernel to run Linux via VNC

Hey there,
is there already a working kernel for the TF300T supporting loop devices to run Linux in a shell and accessing it via VNC?
I already tried Asus builds .17, .26, .29 as well as Cyanogen 9 experimental but evertime i tried, loop device creation failed.
It would be awesome to run Linux on the Transformer
Thanks for responses
That would be nice. Just tried it with AOKP and it didn´t work.
You're not the only one who would like this. One of the reasons I'm considering getting a keyboard dock is to run this very setup.
Of course. Many of us have got linux up and running already.
If you're talking about a chroot linux environment, that is.
All you need is root.
On WW, that is, but it would be strange if the other originals haven't got the same kernel.
That sounds interesting.
Could you provide us with a link or guide on how you or others got it working?
Best regards
You can check it out here:

It works now for me. Seems .29 build has workin loop devices. In my case the bootscript for the ubuntu image was faulty (it contained wrong paths to busybox).
This thread covers what I needed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585009

Dual boot Ubuntu (or other Linux) on TF300T?

Hello all,
I have an interesting problem I would love some information about. I recently bought an Asus Transformer Pad (TF300T). I have already unlocked the bootloader via the Asus utility, flashed TWRP recovery, and rooted it. Now I'm interested in the possibility of dual-booting.
I know that Ubuntu has support for ARM, but I have no experience installing something like that on a device like this. Ideally, I would install Ubuntu (or another Linux distro that supports ARM) to the external SD card and be able to choose at boot time to boot into Ubuntu or into Android. I have seen that some people did something like this on the TF101, but I don't know if that would still work.
If anyone has any ideas about this, I would appreciate hearing them.
Thanks,
Vincent

hi to help to answer your question, if im correct because we do not have much support for building custom kernels to support dual booting into linux, that is a reason why currently there is zero support towards this feature, but there are alternatives, here is a link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...MsImNvbS56cHdlYnNpdGVzLmxpbnV4b25hbmRyb2lkIl0.
this link has an application to install linux on your asus tf300t tablet, it is confirmed to work with stock, but has not been tested on a custom rom, this is using the CHRoot method, aka running next to android requiring a vnc viewer to be used to view it and interact with it. this is not a dual boot, until developers on here can get a JB custom kernel that supports dual booting, there will simply be no possibility, plus we do not even have finished NVFlash files yet to help doing this/ unbrick our tablets. i hope this helped, if it did please hit the thx button below
Dual booting for TF300T
I am currently trying to Dual Boot the TF300T with Ubuntu as well with little success.
I've been going from the TF101 Method...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/ASUS_Eee_Pad_Transformer/How_to_install_Ubuntu/Ubuntu_Install
I have been unable to get Frank'sTools to Run through Windows, or Successfully use OliFE through Linux on my PC.
With OLiFE, Once I enter that I wish to Dualboot in the 2. Flash option, Nothing happens. Though it says it should ask me which system should be default etc. I have gone through the sh files and have tried to tweak them a bit to get the scripts to work, but nothing has worked.
There is a guide here for the TF201 which I am thinking of trying but you have to flash the boot.img whenever you want to switch between the OS by the look of it.
Not sure if it is worth trying though. The main reason why I want Linux is so that I can run DSUME since the current DS Emulator for Android isn't fantastic yet. (Good job so far though guys)
If Anyone has any ideas for how to Dual boot the TF300T, please let me know!!! I don't want to run linux through Android as this would be terrible for emulation
P.S. I am still a complete noob at all of this

Dualbooting & Roms

Hi guys,
I have a TF300T on 4.1.1, I was looking into dual booting with ubuntu & found out I needed an NVFlashable rom, then I found here I needed pre-JB. I had flashed roms before except I flashed back to stock (latest on asus website around 12/14/12) to use my cable providers TV application.
Which gave me the idea of flashing back to pre-jb...(would that even work...?) **I know that JB would update something other then the kernel (though I wouldnt know what since its not a phone and doesnt have basebands for each OS ver, unless it does....)
Either way, if any of you are using a TF300T dualbooted like the TF101 any information would help! Guide links, etc...anything that can be done via PC or MAC.
It would be great to do this as soon as possible as its a laptop replacement for class,
Thanks!

At this time you can't go backward from JB unless you had installed Nvflash and made the proper backups while still on ICS. It has been tried many times and many ways.
There is an arch linux in the developer section (dual boot). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918849
You have to unlock your tablet to use it. When you unlock you give up your warranty and support from Asus.
I have not tried Arch for sometime. When I tried in the past I was not pleased, my normal operating system (on my pc) is Ubuntu 11.10.
Good Luck!

Its unfortunate, as long as arch is not bloated and clean...I suppose it might be fine. I couldn't stick to ICS even if I wanted to as my pad came with JB installed (White model; September).

I suggest you read carefully the arch linux thread. I still don't find it a daily answer.
What do you wish to accomplish with your tablet that stock dosen't allow?

Simple things such as accessing steam & keeping up with my server nodes *Viewing information, Status, Etc (which I haven't found an app for that is not complete garbage) Theres stuff like connectbot for ssh & telnet but not what I need. Might just have to end up selling tablet for a cheap laptop or something.

You have found an area that is certainly lacking.
Macbook Air 13 inch, maybe?
I'm sorry I couldn't help.

As luck would have it I am running a 13 inch Macbook Air.
I run Ubuntu 11.10 on the internal sdd and have OSX 10.6 and OSX 10.7 on external usb drives.
To get the fans to operate properly download the mac 64bit version and you should be good.

Battery life is not as quite good as on OSX but respectable.
Maybe this will help.

[Q] What if NVFlash got updated

Hi everyone,
So lets say that the sun would rise from the west tomorrow and Asus/Nvidia released an update for NVFlash compatible with 4.1 and 4.2. Would people including myself who have a bricked tf300t with nonfunctional "fastboot flash" be able to save the tablet or are we simply screwed? (changing motherboard is not worth it in my opinion) Could some body with enough knowledge be kind and explain?
By the way, if you haven't signed the NVFlash petition yet. Do a favor and do it now! Thanks.
I think you can only install nvflash on not-yet bricked devices!

1. It will only work on UNLOCKED devices
2. It requires access to Fastboot to prepare device first time
3. It won't work on fully bricked devices (See 2.)

I'm not sure why that has to be the case. On the Iconia A500 and the TF101, getting into apx mode with the code allows NVflash to wipe the NAND clean, rewrite the partition table and then rewrite the bootloader. Which retros you back to the state antebellum, which would allow reinstallment of a rom of choice after. This, at least theoretically. I make no pretense at being an expert at it, but perhaps android mobi's is not the only possible way. If truth be told, instructions by mobi's are about as clear as mud for debutants. If enough devils get involved, we may even have an automated device not unlike the APX Flash Tool or BadSector for the A500. Again, I could be missing some critical elements big time. Please enlighten us if you could, tobdaryl. Many thanks.

Once nvflash is installed what you present is correct (at least that is my understanding - I have only done a simple restore for testing purposes). Look at my signature for a guide to restore with nvflash. The second method presented is what you suggest for the tf101.
The situation to install is different because Asus has locked the tablet to exclude installing nvflash.
I am in the dark as you are. I only know what I can and can't do on my tablet. Otherwise I can pass information provided by others.
My reference is the Nook Tablet. I can delete every partition and rebuild the drive from a blank state this is possible because the tablet can boot from an sdcard.
I had a pm request to provide an nvflash installation guide. I complied but did not present it on xda. The member making the request was pleased and successfully used it to install nvflash. I have since used it to install nvflash on one tablet. Honestly my guide is no better than the guide provided, just a different presentation and can be done by anyone who wishes go step by step through the guide already presented. Just copy and paste the info and do some minor rewording.
I wish I could truly help but I honestly can't. I have come to accept some related info as fact since I have not been able to prove otherwise and have grown tired while chasing dead ends. I don't have the expertise, experience, or hardware to move forward.

[Completed] [Q] What is a recovery.img and what is it for?

Hey guys,
I was looking for a tutorial and a description about what is a recovery.img and if there is always the need to root any Android or Smartphone (even if it comes with Ubuntu mobile OS) to install a custom ROM.
My second question is about the Super User Apps:
I always see tutorials in which, after flashing the recovery.img they say we need to install a, i.e., CWM_SuperSU_xxx.zip. I do not know why to do that if I have my phone rooted and all I need to do is to boot it and go to the Play Store and install the latest SuperSU app by ChainFire, i.e.
All these questions have a single porpuse: To know what I am doing, because I do not like to perform tasks as an robot. I have a brain that loves to know and learn and be aware of what its doing.
Thank you very much for your help. Maybe you could point me to the documents I need to read to now all these questions.
By the way:
I rooted a year ago my HTC One-V and installed a Custom ROM before and It was working perfect until somebody stolen it from me.
My device now is a Samsung Galaxy GT-i9300. I am from Perú, and my Service Provider is Claro.
I use Ubuntu 14.04 and 12.04 and I have installed Heindall from the Ubuntu repositories. Until now I just read tutorials of how to root my phone, but I do not want to perform tasks without knowing what are them for.
So I want to wait before rooting my GT-i9300 until I know what I am really doing with my phone.
Thank you in advance!
Regarding Rooting, Please see [Q] What is rooting? Particularly #7
When it comes to Recovery, See XDA Wiki. Also See XDA University for Android Flashing Guide.
If your Device comes with Linux, then you should not use Android Rooting programs unless advised to do so. Weather Device Recovery works with Linux or not depends on Case by case basis.
In case of additional questions, please post in Android General
My device is a very popular one, a GS3 GT-i9300. It is an Android phone.
My PC, where I am going to connect my phone to root it that has Ubuntu Linux 14.04 and 12.04 installed.
Maybe you miss understood what I wrote.

So if I want to use CWM Recovery, then I can look for the latest version? Or there is a special version for my phone. Afaik it is exactly like my PC when I install a dual boot with Windows. The bootloader (maybe Grub2) is like the Samnsung bootloader and Recovery and my Android are like Ubuntu and Windows dual booting. Is that right?
And hence I do not need a special CWM Recovery for my phone, it should be a simple recovery.img installer but versions differs in features and installed programs. Is that correct? And I just can look for the latest one.

Thank you very much @Perseus71
Your links are very useful for my purpose.

So...
In simple words, it is like my PC.
I inicially have a single OS, Android. Maybe a Recovery but installed by the manufacturer.
Then if I install a Custom Recovery, it is like creating a dual boot: Android and Recovery.
Then if I install a ROM it is like removing a Linux distribution in my PC and installing a new one.
Recovery gives me some tools like backup my personal settings and data and even my apps.
In those terms, there should be ways to install dual boot Android and Ubuntu Touch? Or which ever ROMs in dual boot?
Mauricio Mora
If you want to install CWM, please visit [RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 for GT-I9300
Mind you that is for GSM Phone only.
Yes Bootloader = Grub but Linux/ubuntu do not have a concept of Recovery in traditional android sense. In that wany Grub does do the job of a recovery. You may want to google for "What is Android Recovery ?"
If you still have continued questions, please post them in Galaxy S III General forum.
