Lagging like all hell - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I updated ICS about 2 months back and it is the worst decision I have ever made. My phone went from being blazing fast to slow as hell. I can't even text through GoSMS or play Scramble With Friends without it lagging. Is there any other solution to this other than rooting? I'm still on stock and have never rooted my phone.

Reported on language two q&a thanks

Try rooting, developers tweak a ROM to same it faster and smoother. I can't recommend you a rom since I'll get crap for it so just read the guides and read what different ROMs have to offer.

1.root
2.overclock
3.install another ROM

Rooting is just going to complicate things for a guy with lag , and seems to be "new" or not just very techy regarding Android secrets lol
Try to flash a custom recovery , format/wipe dalvik , cache , data and reset factory defaults ... You'll LOOSE eveything on your phone so back things up before hand , but most probably this will clean the system and speed it up for you , if not , format everything in recovery and flash mohan_kr deodexed 4.0.4 UCLF6 in custom recovery ... I can safely say it's faster than ODIN flash of stock att ICS and stil stock ROM ..

If you're going to do all that, just root. A stock ROM is a stock ROM--garbage in, garbage out. At least by rooting you give yourself a more capable platform to work with. Even with the smallish dev community for Skyrocket (that seems to have just gotten one smaller), there are some really great ROMs out there that will do far more for you than a factory reset to the same stock ROM will.

I notice the lag with Gosms after the 4.0.4. I rooted, a lil better but still a lag. Sent a message to Go, said they know. Last update I did from them made it a lil better...but still lags. Sucks cause you have to type slow. Something happened in the update 4.0.4.

Instead of posting your theories look to the posts that are trying to help you and respond so we know that you really have a problem and need help not just waisting others people time..If you continue such attitude nobody will help you again...
Ungrateful noobs...

Lagging a lot of times has to do with the cache that builds up overtime. The moment you clear the cache, things are speedy again. So, as suggested, root, install CWR, and format the cache partition.

Were you on GB? Did you update through Kies? Are you running the official ATT ICS?
You could try installing an odin one click and that's gonna wipe everything I guess. And make a backup ofc first.

[Q] Rewinding sound while speaking.

Hi, I recently started messing around with my sgs4g and installed a custom rom using the GB Stater Pack and flash the KJ6 AOSP, everything is working flawlessly except that everytime I'm talking to someone I suddenly hear a rewinding-kind of sound and the other person can hear it too, it happened to me using octane rom, stock GB update and AudiophileFTW edition, can someone please help me get rid of that sound it's getting really annoying, I would really appreciate any help given. Thanks in advance
dude, you hurt your hardware.
Go back to stock KD1, and see if you still have the issue, If you do, go to the tmobile store.

If I Odin the stock one the rewinding sound goes away, I already did that, but I really want to try a few custom roms because the battery consumption of the stock one is awful.
I have 2 galaxy s 4g both of them are having the same problem one is running the kj6 aosp and the other one is running stock gingerbread leak rooted

Weird issue. I know you didn't mention it in the OP, but are you over or under-clocking at all?
I'm somewhat with airflup on this - it seems to be a hardware issue. I am saying that based on the fact that I've not heard of anyone else having this issue on GB ROMs. It could be something funky with one of the chips in the phone but only manifests in the GB ROMs. It's weird but not unheard of.
I've not attempted this so someone tell me I'm an idiot for thinking about this, but what if you flash a stock GB ROM followed by the modem from KD1 or whatever Froyo ROM you're using to see if the problem is still there?
If you have the same issues on 2 different devices, you should redownload the roms(cwm and odin), maybe its a download issue i.e. mds5 error
Tell me if that works

As of today I have rooted my phone with different methods, re-downloaded everything, used different versions of Odin, went back to stock, install official GB, it's still doing it, also with the stock Gingerbread leak I noticed that besides the rewinding nose every 4-5 minutes, also the call log doesn't work and while I was watching a movie at work the phone light stayed lit during the whole film... I don't know what to do, is either go back to stock and recharge my phone every 4 hours or go back to kj6 aosp and deal with that annoying sound ..

Kernel is stock no under nor overclocked, btw what's the modem's role on the galaxy s 4g can this be the issue, I have never changed it but what if I do, can it help in any way, thank for all the help...
The modem is the radio for your phone to communicate with the cellular service. People change the modem file to see if they get better speeds in their area. Check the dev section, there's a whole thread containing just the modem files to flash.
I don't know if it will makea difference but it certainly couldn't hurt to try.

Flash ROMs without wiping data?

In the ARHD forum a while back someone advocated the strategy of never wiping data when switching between ROMs. He said he had never wiped data, and if he ever ran into problems with an app on a new ROM he just manually cleared that app's data and everything was fine.
He boasted essentially never having to reconfigure anything on his phone, and that he has successfully retained every app, setting, and text message that he's always had every time he has flashed a new ROM.
Is it possible that this is true?
I doubt it,
I didn't wipe once and ran into so much errors that I ended up re flashing whole rom..
Honestly it doesn't take much more then 30-35 min to setup a new rom specially if you buy the titanium backup app they even have a free version of it which also works great.
Sent From My Sexy Sensation Running Aokp.
well on the ARHD thread it says a wipe is optional when coming from previous versions, but personally i've only flashed it once so i can't say something about it.. however, when i do upgrade from rom's i have just flashed over it (if im switching to different rom i do a wipe) and haven't had problems, unless it says a wipe is recommended when upgrading then i just do a full wipe, and then restore the data from previous backups within 4EXT, this restores all my apps and settings i had previously.. its worked for me so far
I had once do that because i forgot to wipe the data. I forgot the rom's name but i experienced no error then i switched to Smartdroid rom

Yeah but what's the point, there are many apps out there that can back up your data to restore afterwards.
I almost lost my phone!
I flashed a custom rom in my htc.... it was a total loss.. i don't know what happened..but as soon as i locked it....it never came back.... proximity sensor flashed red light all the time.....finally, had to open the back cover to make it work and boot into recovery....

Stock jelly bean very laggy, should I switch to cyanogen mod?

I'm running stock jb and sadly its very laggy and many taps will result in many second of waiting. Even Google search takes ages to start.
Are the cyanogen Roms better? Is there already a working cm10 rom available?

I would give Jellybro a try. Seems to be fairly popular ROM based on CM10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791751
Make sure you make a nandroid backup and know how to flash beforehand.
i agree! jellybro is the sastest jb rom here !
I'm using paranoidandroid 1.9.5 its very smooth and fast but WiFi tethering is not working

Since you need to wipe the phone either way, have you tried a factory reset yet? It's worth a shot. You never said whether or not you did. But if you're looking for more features all baked in, go with a custom ROM
I think CM9 is still faster overall although it isn't buttery smooth like JB or CM10.

My boot loader is already unlocked so I shouldn't have to wipe for root, right? I'm just not sure if CM10 is worth it. Don't know if nexus s is capable of keeping it fast with Android 4.x...
You should try the jellybro rom because its super fast.

Try doing a full wipe/system reset. My Nexus S OTA to JB a few weeks ago. Even at stock, it was fast. No lag.
If you are experiencing lags, it is likely your phone's filled with resource contending stuff.
BTW, I've seen flashed in CMREX Beta9 JB. Boot up is insanely fast. Everything works.
Also you can try the V6 Supercharger mod. It helped my other phone - Gingerbread equipped XT615 Motoluxe speed up quite nicely.

Mine runs very well on JB. You're already rooted and whatnot, all you need to do is backup via recovery. Properly wipe the phone and flash. There's a few 4.1 ROMs out there. Give them a shot and see what you like. The phone is still pretty quick despite its age. Like I said. The phone may just need to be cleaned up. I've never had mine lag, personally.
Should I wipe SD partition too? It takes ages to backup the SD partition to a PC first...doesn't seem to support USB 2.0...
I would try a factory reset first to see what happens...

From my understanding just do a factory reset/wipe, wipe the dalvik cache and then flash your ROM.

First try change kernel..
Nocerino's Rulez with RAScarlo's ROM features TriNitY
I've had the same issue and came here to see if others shared. JB was initially pretty solid (I initially did a full wipe), but now it lags real bad. Google Now is the worst offender. It takes at least 5 seconds to appear, and then a good chunk of time to allow me to input text. It's too much.
I'm going to keep looking for another ROM, but honestly, I was counting on the fact that stock would be the most reliable. I've also had trouble using my radio to make calls / use data. I'm disappointed as I figured these problems were previously mostly due to custom ROMs. All I want is a stable, simple ROM that functions consistently.
Google Now was fast for me initially but it's super slow now but I doubt this is a ROM issue.
Everything else is fast and smooth.

I think its time to upgrade...just waiting for a nexus without pentile screen.
Do a full wipe, clear cache
This is the best time to check as many roms as possible. no need to worry about losing anything as you should of backed it all up by now. So clean slate and try some different Roms. To say stock is laggy does sound strange. So back up everything, even whats on your SD.
Clean start.
Best backup program to save apps and data - Titanium backup
Best app for everything else (app manager, processes etc..) - Romtoolbox.
Now go have fun!
try Xenonhd v6.0 and Air kernel JB weekly.
My phone is better than new with this combo. I am not going to try anything else until these give me a serious issue (I dont think they will)

Update Gone Wrong

Hello - I tried to update my phone from Infuse v2.2.3 to Th3Bill JB 3.3.2 and got in an endless loop. I then tried to go into recovery mode and do a restore. Checked the MD5, Erased boot and then started restoring boot image and thats where she has been sitting for some time. I will pull batter and attempt again however I may be hosed. Any help greatly appreciated.
It is not possible, that I am aware of, to go from Froyo straight to JB. You will also not be able to restore a backup at this point due to changes made on the phone in the borked attempt. You should be able to wipe data, cache, and dalvik, and after a couple of attempts re- install a Froyo rom from scratch. If you can't do that, do this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629079
Thanks to qkster and Entropy for this.
I had that issue as well. Only cause I like to see if I can be done. But no. What I do is go back to stock and rooted then flash a ICS ROM then make sure it boots. Then go wipe all stuff in cwm and flash jelly

Hey Pony, I was on the custom ROM Infuse v2.2.3 and not stock Froyo. I ended up doing the gtg ultimate unbrick to bring it back to stock and then did the full back to Infuse v2.2.3 and then did a nandroid restore. Everything looks good but it is acting a bit weird. Like I will try to open my applications or folders it sometimes hangs. I consistantly get it to free up by locking the phone and then unlocking it. Weird huh? Anyway I would be interested in trying to upgrade to JB but would like more instruction on that. Thanks for responding and if you can recommend anything that might help Im all ears.
See the post below - if you need more specific instructions let me know.
Thanks rkkaranrk.
Use Odin or heimdll to get stock GB Tom and then from there u can flash any rom u like just follow the instructions in the OP. You can go directly from GB to ICS but for JB u have to flash any ICS rom first and then JB.
Read the instructions on every thread.

[Q] Updating, not losing apps"Custom ROM."

I got my Note 10.1 a few months back. Now I have got a lot of apps that I love and don't want to lose.
I am using a custom European ROM made by zedomax "HighonAndroid".
I've decided 2 days ago that I want to update my note to jelly bean.
My question is: How can I back up all my applications before wipe/data reset?
I really don't want to lose the apps nor the root.
Can anyone help me?

titanium backup, buy it. you'll use it all the time
You can make a flashable zip of your stuff. If you do this, I have only had good resaults of flashing it after rebooting into the new rom and then flash the update zip. also would be good if you went ahead and did the thing in your securty setting to allow the non play store apps, especially if you have them.
This usually does a great job of doing the data part of the apps like logins and stuff. sometimes mine dont work right at first but it still saves a lot of time
If the rom you are going to doesnt have root built into it, which I think all here do, then getting root back isnt hard and there is this voodoo root keeper app as well somewhere maybe on the market. but rerooting isnt that big of a deal and shouldnt be nesesary

Ty very informative, but I don't think the root will be installed because im going for stock JB.
Only question is can I flash in germany's ROM when I'm on European now?
Yep, ODIN or mobile ODIN will do it... You would benefit from backing up internal sd card - connect to pc and copy contents of phone/internal.... This means if it does an entire wipe you don't loose all your game saves etc.... Not likely to but the chance is always there, especially if you use mobile ODIN and tick "clear cache/data"...
Though I am curious why you don't flash the stock UK JB rom in developement as all are the same, just csc is different...

I have up and I believe darkman_rs does as well, stock versions of the jelly bean set up to run on an 8013. Mine is for the uk and I think darkman has the nordik. Either will work. I am in the U.S. and use the uk version with no issues. The csc is consumer region stuff, both of these roms have that stuff taken care of so they will not have an issue in any region.
So if you are on a custom rom and want to go to a complete stock, then go to sammobile, firmware, download one from there and flash through odin, then reroot
Or you can grab another stock, or custom rom from here set to flash through cwm and go that route
