So I've tried reading through some of the introduction threads, but there's so many jargon terms thrown out casually that I have no idea what half the posts are talking about.
I just "exchanged" my old AT&T Tilt for the AT&T Fuze, and I'm loving it. However, I want to update my ROM to windows mobile 6.5, and get into customizing it a bit. I know the first part is the hardest, because you run the risk of bricking the phone.
Since I have no experience doing this, could someone help walk me through the process?
I know I most likely want a 'cooked' ROM, and I've read the tutorial a few times, I'm just not sure I'm understanding it correctly due to some of the terminology. I'm also not entirely sure what ROM I want yet, and was hoping someone might be able to point me towards one that fits my needs.
Again, sorry if I'm asking when I just just be leaping. Will someone please hold my hand and give me some chocolate milk and talk me through changing the ROM? >.<

Thanx for your reply, it proves you didn't read my post at all.
well if you had clicked his link you would realize that post is exactly what you were asking for.
also. No one can pick out a ROM for you. Browse through them and test a few out. it only takes a few moments to flash a new ROM to your phone.
What terminology are you having trouble with? if you search for it in the wiki or in the post that was linked above then you will undoubtedly find an explanation.
A good site for general overview, if you can handle the writing style, is blown fuze. I gained a lot of info reading this, even though I don't have a Fuze yet (but would like to get one).

take the time to click the link and it will provide you all the instructions needed. Everything is explained in full detail even providing the program you need to flash a new rom, so you should really really click before you complain.
trust me, that link on flashing your first gsm rom is as complete as you get, unless you want big pretty pictures or a video.

TO THE OP
Having looked at all the stickies first rom flashing looks easier on this than on my old wizard. I found the sim unlocking, cid and super cid unlocking at first but I read everything twice and it worked okay for me
And if it doesnt then there are plenty of people here who can help

Thank you for actually reading my post, I greatly appreciate it.
To everyone else, I DID click the link, and read it several times before even posting. If you had bothered to read my post, you would have noticed I referenced it several times. I took the time to read before posting, you could at least have the civil decency to do the same.
@ Theoneeye, thank you for the assurance, I tracked down someone who was able to answer some ROM questions for me and help me find a good starting ROM and assist me with the process to make sure I don't brick my phone on my first go at it.
Normally I just try things like this, and if it fails, try again until it works. However, since I read up on this first (even though everyone here seems to think I didn't) I know I run the risk of bricking my phone. Since I've gone through several exchanges already to get this phone for free (long story) I don't wanna be swapping another phone so soon.
To those who still bother to read posts, any input you can provide on your ROM choices, or the other half of my post regarding some things I should look into installing, I would appreciate it.
To anyone else who's going to continue to refer me to that sticky instead of reading, please **** off.
wow. I'm surprised. If you actually read through the link several times and you still did not get it, you were skimming it or you really really do not have a strong grasp on the english language.
Hell, it's even numbered. How much easier would you prefer. If you want suggestions for ROM choices, it is entirely up to you. Every rom has their own unique "style" that they offer and they describe it all in the first post. Energy, NATF, etc all explain their roms in great details and some even provide extra steps.
My blunt suggestion here is that before you tell others to **** off for referring you to where everyone else has use as reference and successfully performed a flash, you should save your rudeness for yourself. Also, if you have any questions on terminology, ask which jargon is throwing you a wrench in your direction following process. That would make it much easier to explain.
P.S: seriously read through that damn sticky, it is as clear as a swarovski crystal. Follow it step by step and don't "do your thing" and you'll have a successful flash.
btw. way to be a jackass to those who have already given you the answers you asked for.
EDIT: TLDR version. Be polite, and follow the directions to the letter. and ROMs are your personal choice since they're all unique and they come in full explanations as to their purpose.

I see your arrogance is getting you far
Just getting into this meself and so far it looks like...
- sort out the hardSPL update first to let you do the ROM and other upgrades...
- once it says 1.90.OliNex on the bootloader fetch the new ROM
- reading around and going by most references the Energy 6.5 ROM seems to be worth a shot, think that's what I'll be installing on my TP
- while you're at it search for aerial upgrades and put a newer version on at the same time to sort out GPS and phone performance.
Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter, don't run anything else on the PC while updates are being done and check, check and triple check the ROMS to make sure they're correct before doing anything

It's helpful knowing there's some decent people on these forums who are willing to help out. I was able to get the few basic questions I had regarding installation and some pointers to help me find a ROM that fits my needs. Since then I've done a few flashes and all have gone off without a hitch.
To those of you who continue to think I'm being rude, you seem to fail to realize the ignorance and blatant 'ass hattery' in repeatedly referring someone to read something they already read without providing any additional information. It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all.
Speaking of "It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all."
If you want help here this is NOT the way to get it.
This is a community of great minds and mutual respect, not somewhere for someone to start making demands and throwing out general negativity.
No one here thinks you continue to be rude, THEY CAN READ IT FOR THEMSELVES.
Everyone here is willing to help, but you need to help yourself first. You're off to a really great start....

Sorry Dracius, i'm with the majority of people here who think you're rude and havent understood the idea of this site - its a community developement site, not a one-stop download & personal tech support center.
The instructions in the flashing guide are exactly what you need to start you off in the world of flashing roms. It has a "before you start" backup part - with a link to free backup software.
It then goes on to explain exactly and in detail how to flash (GSM) hard spl - including a link and instructions to ensure you have a GSM phone. It also tells you to ensure you dont have any other programs running / screen saver etc which might throw a spanner in the works.
Following that, it says - if you want to - how to sim & security unlock the phone, including the required link.
Next it details how to flash a rom, including a very helpful line
1. Download your prefered Rom from the Raphael Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
Click to collapse
Your prefered rom - remember this is a guide on how to flash - not what to flash. To decide that, read the details in the rom forum, read other users feedback - and then when it doesnt help, do what everyone else does and try half a dozen to see what it is you want your phone to be like.
Finally, the guide tells you how to flash a different radio - and again says this is optional. It then links to a radio thread which explains what the radio does and why you might want to flash it.
If you have a problem with any part of the process (or pretty much anything related to your phone) then (after searching & reading) make a post explaining what your problem is - and what you have done to help yourself (say exactly which threads you have read, and why they dont help you / what you dont understand) - people will generally help.
This isnt what you did.

You have to have a pretty-much rock-stock ROM for this update to work. You could just install attn1's version of the stock ROM with this update already applied, then properly rooted and packaged for installation:

After installing, the update screen will show that you are up to date.

That is how flash attn1 rom. I think you might have misunderstood. He meant that you could go back to stock stock and apply it. Because if your rooted it will fail to install OR. Apply attn1 rom.

Attn1's ROM is flashed in hboot because it includes a radio. It is the ota update your phone is trying to get, but with root. He also has one in that same thread with sideloading enabled.

i really dont get why it bothers some people so much, they respond to threads saying use the search button, people ask it alot. U dont have to respond to the post to begin with, alot of people do though, and with the same effort used to say use the search button, u could have just as easily answered the question.
Best part is if u dont want to answer it because you think they were to lazy to search it gets buried pretty quick.

its probably because to newer users, its a little intimidating to go thru many posts and threads, and they also know some info could be outdated. Maybe on the site, there should be an official, updated "how to" glossary or wiki.

I'll tell you why....
Because the question was already answered for one thing.
It's also forum rules, and I've seen it mentioned by Mods a million times.
Community moderation...I let people know in the hopes of breaking a habit before it starts: posting a new thread for every single question that crosses their mind, and, eventually, expect to be given answers to everything, getting even more reluctant to do the "work" of finding answers and learning about their phones on their own.
Next thing you know, we're up to our necks in duplicate posts. Then, NOBODY will want to answer ANYTHING, because they have to wade through 4 tons of duplicate crap, and it ain't worth it.
How hard is it to Google "inspire OTA update root" ?

As to the last question: speaking for myself, I am tempted to just ask question, not because I can't effin search, but some of my questions, one has to weed through all manner of material on multiple threads, some pertinent, some not, since February to ascertain "the" answer. This is all well and good and maybe an exercise in disciple, like back in school or something, but maybe some of us just get impatient in an effort to save time. That said, I am fully on board with the forum rules, because da rules are da rules, and this is where one has to come for this sort of stuff :-D.

Oh I agree. Everyone has questions, and everyone has opinions. There are often times wrong/incomplete answers to things, and both yes and no to the same question.
It's not necessarily easy to parse through and distill all of this stuff. But it can be done. I often times run across answers that go both ways, and that can be unsettling, especially if it involves potentially bricking a device if you get it wrong.
It's just a question of analysis, and I concede some people are more comfortable doing it than others. I guess I never expected to be handed all of the answers to basic questions.
I've always preferred searching over posting in asking a question, as it usually always provides the answer *quicker* than waiting for someone to post back an answer to the question.
Not to mention, if it turns out it was a much easier answer to find than first apparent, or that it was one's own oversight responsible for a problem that motivated the question, one can bypass getting antagonized by jerks like me.

Scott, why must you pretend to be GOD in these forums which you clearly aren't....if the guy wants to ask, let him ask...the search feature in this forum sucks anyways, so i would of done the same exact thing. don't like reading something that is redundant, then go grab the book War and Peace and entertain yourself. I'm not pretending anything. Searching before posting is forum rules, often cited by mods. I happen to feel it's important enough to remind people, and I'm not the only one. It's called community moderation.
No, a lot of stuff does NOT get outdated. Some do, like radio flashing and not needing eng s-off, but others don't, or haven't yet and don't look like they're going to.
For example, rooting remains the same basic process as when it started. One of two methods are available, and likely there won't be any new ground-breaking discoveries, at least for a while. Maybe it will change in the future, but it hasn't yet.
Another example... Until someone makes ATT want to push their otas to rooted devices, the process by which to update one's rooted phone with those OTA updates will remain the same. Etc....
And Google works just fine, better than the built-in search function of many sites.
Saying "I can't search because search sux" is a cop-out, plain and simple.

Umm, no. At least not on the full site. If you look right above the forum frames (up, up a little more, no down, yeah, there, on the right) you'll see the search you should be using. It searches recursively from wherever you are. Forum home? Searches the whole board. Inspire home? Searches the whole Inspire board. Inspire Dev? Yep, just the dev section. It goes clear down to searching within a thread. Hardly sucky.
I have been rooted for about a month now and have flashed several custom roms but am now back at the stock rooted rom desiring the latest at&t ota update. I read earlier in this thread that because I'm already rooted the update won't install. My question is can I just flash the attn1 rom even though I rooted my device using bubby's root method?

It should work fine. All attn1's ROM needs is s-off. Bubby's give you that.
I'm not positive but I think att1 updated rooted stock rom w/sideloading is in the form of pd98img.zip file which u need to put on on your SD card but not in a folder. Then turn off fastboot in settings, power off your phone, then while holding down the vol down button push your power button. The phone should boot into hboot where it will search for the pd98img for a few seconds then ask you to update. Once it's done you can reboot & delete the file off your SD card cause it's around 300 or so mb. Once your all done with that you also might want to get the matching ril file for the new radio that's in the update which you can flash in cwr.

Hey there everyone.
I'm from the Vibrant section, and I have some questions for you Galaxy S 4G users, please do know I searched around, but I thought it'd be best to have all the information anyone had on this particular topic all in one thread, so if anyone feels this is useless, feel free to delete it, I'm just trying to gain some knowledge. My girlfriend has a GS4G, and although the devs have done a great job modding Samsung's ROMs.. they don't compare to AOSP ROMs in my opinion.
Now, for the questions.
1. Why is it we can't get a working kernel to boot for the GS4G? (Someone please do explain in detail.)
2. How far has someone gone/gotten? (I know krylon handed the work to someone, but I don't think they've reported back?)
And please, no stupid answers. This is pure discussion. If a kernel dev is what we need, I could try to find one that's willing to work with me, but we'd need testers and such.
From what I heard and read around, you guys don't have any devs thats capable of doing that.

Alright, flame me.. because I'm definitely doing something wrong. I'm in no way demanding an ETA or even demanding anyone to start working on this, I simply wanted to group the information anyone knows so we could help each other.. you know.. kind of what a community does?
Guys, being cynical and trolling won't get us anywhere, and tell you the truth, it's childish and starting to bore.
The guy said he wanted a technical status summary and specifically said he wants to help.
In this case, i think we do need to maintain a thread of work chords and specify the barriers.
I thank every new dev with a will to help.
I think he deserves a different attitude than a noob, especially if we don't want to scare all devs from here.

If you want to help, pm me.
Starting threads like these without searching only causes trolling and thread thrash (a lot of useless threads in the forum that blur the current state).
When you read what I'm saying, imagine a skinny geek with a deep helpful-relaxed voice... and a smile
A lot of people take me the wrong way. I'm a geek. I read and write code. I don't like wasting my time making you feel all warm and fuzzy.

That's my opinion anyway.

10 Char.
Lets keep this thread going I am also wondering how come there is so little development here but what developers we have are dedicated!
We have great developers that work hard on cm. The sgs 4g is the problem of not having it, freaking sammy with their experiments. i really enjoy their masterpieces(devs). Op you just have to have some patience, cm will come to us i believe in our devs.

Then why didn't you group all the information that is already available in the 50 other threads about CM7 into this one?
if you really wanted to do that, you could have made your OP a summary with bullet points of the details of everything that was already discussed, and then updated it with new information that comes along.
did you even search at all??

Before flaming and insulting did you notice the date on the first post?
Personally I think the person that cast the raise dead spell should be getting beat with the flame bat.
I swear sometimes people are too eager to flame somebody. Its like they had a bad day come to xda to post behind a anonymous screen name and then walk away feeling better. But that is just me, Im sure my observation is wrong.

First of all, this has never been my primary device. I have never owned this device. I used to own the Samsung Vibrant, now I own a Nexus S. My girlfriend owned a Galaxy S 4G, and was using her phone to try to bring something new to you guys. (First ICS theme for this device ring a bell?) It's not my job to group 50 other threads about CM7 into this one. That's not what a community is. I am in no way a recognized developer, I know my stuff, but I have a long way to go. But it's people like you that make devs want to leave and stop posting their stuff. You swear people have time to do everything. And indeed that was my intention, but I wasn't going to pull useless information from other threads that members have posted, that are often inaccurate. This thread was mostly meant for devs, that could actually help out, and working together.
In other news, I finally have some time to mess around with stuff, might look into more themes or something, but I lack a device to work on, so I guess if some people would like to help (testing, etc.) I'd be glad to push things out from time to time.
Would anyone with a greater understanding of the ICS Versions be able to put up a sticky explaining them and their advantages?
As far as I know there's Leak #1, Leak #2, and OTA.
I feel that there's a lot of confusion about flashing to ICS, flashing from ICS to GB, back and forth from the Jellybeans.
I believe we now have a way to flash back to stock OTA? Are the Leaks obsolete now?
Is it dangerous to flash from a Leak to OTA and vice-versa?
Is Gingerbread now impossible to get to from OTA?
Sorry for all the questions but I believe that having these questions answered and giving people some information on the different ICS versions we're dealing with will prevent more brickings as well as prevent constant questions on the topic.

Look this has been covered so many times now it is not funny.
The ONLY plus to leak #1 is that you CAN go back to GB on AT&T phones. Leak #2 is the same as the OTA, no difference there.
There is now an ICS FXZ, so the OTA is not so daunting anymore, but you can not go back to GB from either Leak #2 or the OTA....
Now all of this ONLY applies to the AT&T phones, all or most of the international versions can flash back to GB from ICS without issues, except for I think the TW/HK version.
Everything else is pretty much the same.
Next time please do a search. And please no complaints from anyone about how bad using search is. I use it all the time without issue, and I just tried for this and got back several good threads to read to get all the info I just gave. No it is not all in one post, but hey such is life.
Is this sbf InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml.zip from this site http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php final official ICS?
Can I flash this over AT&T leak 1?
Yeah, you're a huge contributor around here Jim so I'll try to say this respectfully.
Some people say "Hey, that's life" while others actually do something to change it.
This forum is meant to bring information together and make it easier for people to gain knowledge on devices as well as how to modify them.
Wouldn't it be intelligent to gather all this information on ICS and put into one post, then make that post a sticky?
Yes... yes it would...
We have an interesting situation with the 2 Leaks and OTA, why not provide knowledge on that situation in one informative post?
Well... probably because "hey such is life."

No.. it would be intelligent to search.
Leak #1 is not really needed anymore - it was only an issue when we did not have a 4.0.4 FXZ for AT&T or if you really want the ability to return to GB.
So, what's your idea - to make a new thread on info that the majority of users already know (and which can be found with resourceful searching), and do that for every international version of ICS with all leaks? Go for it..

Humm, why not collect the info and make the post(s) yourself? That is what I am always trying to get people to do here... I and other SR members are quite busy at the moment, so...
That seems to be the biggest issue here, is most people tend to expect everything given to them, without contributing much themselves.
I am not trying to be a jerk here, just trying to get everyone, not just you to think and do somethings for themselves. Even if you are not the most technical person, it is quite easy to figure things out or read and learn about something and make a post. If it works, needs some edits, great, then when it it is right, we can ask the MODS to sticky it.
i believe all-in-one posts creates cerebral laziness, search, learn, make mistakes, it will be good for you

Okay, now that's a more helpful post. I will start gathering information and see how I can put it together for people to learn more about the ICS situation.
Which section would you recommend I put it in when I have it ready?

What is there to collect now? I really do not understand this whole thing at all. I gave you the answer for the AT&T firmware above. If you are serious, you will have to do this for EVERY firmware out there, to do it properly.
And I have been nothing but helpful in this thread, I even gave you the answer and did not make you search for it... but you and others really do need to start learning how to search better, and read more.

Sorry, I'd rather make it so people don't have to learn by bricking their phones.
That's like saying here's this powersaw and some directions written in Japanese. It's okay if you cut your hand off, it's all part of the "learning experience"!
I guess I shouldn't be trying to help people by centralizing information, while I'm at it I guess I'll just spread my posts out on various different forums and expect users to just do various google searches through many different forums for information instead of just being able to go to XDA and find it in one post...
Why make information more difficult to get to? This isn't some gauntlet or obstacle course, try to save people time, not waste it!

Answer? I don't even have a question. I'm on CM10 and plenty happy there.
I just thought I'd try to see if anyone with more information about ICS wanted to create a post explaining the different kinds.
But since noone wants to I offered to do it myself after collecting information.
Why are you so against me writing a post that could prevent confusion?
Man, no wonder there's so much confusion on this forum, you guys make everything so difficult.
"Go do a search! It's in there somewhere! Argghhh!"
I think I'll go around to all the posts that ask for information and say "Go do a search you lazy freaking bum!" so I can get a lot of Thanks from people... Woohoo... Forum posting is so much fun..

Wow, now you have taken this way to far. I am going to have this thread closed by the MODS. This will not end well.
Look, this has been covered and covered to death, there is NO reason to cover it again and again and make it so that lazy people can stay lazy. the reason it is all over the place is because it gets asked and asked again in another thread and someone else puts info in yet another thread about it... so...
Just stop this madness.... Look, I get it you have very few posts and and want to jump in, but don't do it with making this place for lazy people. If that starts I will leave. This place needs to stay for smart people... and it is really so that people read and read and read again as they should before doing anything... people get so exited here, that such and such is out, and they go flash it without reading and brick... that is their issue, I and others should not have to make it so that idiots can do that.

Yes you started asking about clarifying all the leaks and that ota, which I did for you. I also said to make the post and the SR's here will review and decide if it needs to be sticked and get the MODS to do so, if done well. I am not sure what more you wanted, but I will say this your tone started out in your second post in this thread start out bad, and so I and other have/had changed out tone as well. If you want to do something and make the post, that is well and good, but stop being a PIA about this and carrying on and on about what everyone is responding to you... there are reasons we all are responding this way to you about this... if you change your tone, we will too... and give you even more help most likely as well.

Buddy thats really not needed.. you need to calm down and just re-read the replies u have got.
We are a very helpful bunch here and since the OTA fxz out, Leak 2 or 1 for atnt is really not needed anymore i guess.. As for getting all the info in one post.. if you really feel something like this should be there, then go ahead and do it.
And thus, I have seen enough.
Where did the majority of you posters get your education from?
Cracker Jack?
Never seen such behavior from people.
Tomorrow, I will filter through the posts, and I promise, infractions will follow. Don't bother trying to edit your posts, as it's pretty much frozen.
One thing you all must remember. There are Devs. And these Devs give you all thats possible with what they have to work with. If you expect more, then why argue with the Devs are to blame?????
Why not argue with the manufacturer?
So,in light of a ton of ungrateful users, this thread is closed.
MD
I was going to post in the rookie thread in Development, but decided that my question was most likely better off in here.
I have been running beanstalk, and while I like it to me it isn't pac man.
I'm curious, there are some small things that I would like to maybe make part of PAC but I don't know how difficult it would be.
I would like to steal one of the battery mods that is in beanstalk. Would there be an easy way?
I would also like to find a way to add transparant notification drawer. Would there be an easy way?
I obviously don't want to ask a DEV to change what they like in there rom that they are porting/creating, but I also do not believe I have enough capability to build my own rom.
Any assistance/information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

This mentality here is unacceptable your on a development forum if you feel you lack the capability you've already given up by selling yourself short. I'm tired of people saying I can't learn or I don't have time because it's garbage. Most of the guys doing this have families, jobs, issues, and lives like everyone else and they still make time.
As for the icons it would require you to replace them with a swap since you won't be able to add them to the menus so start with framework-res.apk and systemUI.apk see if you can find the ones you want.

This mentality of everyone is able to do something is simply incorrect. A paralyzed person from the hips down is not going to be able to run under his own power. And the fact that I didn't post this in the DEV section still merits me an ambush. This whole I'm "entitled" mentality to say something because I have done something before on this forum is hilarious. I'm glad that you can make time for it I get too frustrated, and you want to go ahead and look at what the OP of the project rookie thread states? Sorry for doing research before I delved into something I wasn't sure about.
PS Thanks for the information that was ACTUALLY given

So its OK to just dismiss things because you get frustrated anything people want to get good at takes time and effort. The battery stuff has been talked about before so I'm assuming your search was not very thorough but my point was don't sell yourself short and give up before you even try. Also determined people find something they can do if they are paralyzed from the waist down they may never run but could still do tons of great things. You see the glass half empty I see it half full.

You need to post these questions to the rookie thread ... of course, after you have searched.
What you are asking has been answered in this massive place called XDA many times. In fact, I even posted a specific tutorial on how to modify SystemUI.apk for battery mods months ago. I just searched ... and guess what? It's still here ...
Based on the questions you're asking, it is clear that you haven't done any research or leg work on your end. I'm not trying to flame you, just letting you know how other people see this thread.
Nobody is going to handhold you through something if you haven't at least tried to figure it out on your own first. When you get stuck with specific questions because something isn't working, or you have an error in your builds, go to the Rookie Thread first. We are willing to help anyone get going, but not if you aren't willing to put in the effort.
Good luck!
