Very serious Issue With Semi Root - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok my TF101 has a LOT of problems and I've been searching for days with no solution. Im on HTJ85B.Revolver-3.2_epad-8.6.5.9-20110816 Rom, Just an old version of "Revolver" and Kernal 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #15. Anyways at this point no matter what I do I cant get into recovery to flash ANYTHING. Holding the power and down button brings up the script and if I dont press anything, it cold boots. If I press up afterwards it brings up the recovery script, but will stay there forever and never boot into recovery. Even if I boot the TF without holding any arrow, it will stay at the boot screen forever. So the ONLY way to even turn it on is to hold volume down and power, then wait for the cold boot. Another thing is my TF will not connect to my PC via USB storage, It'll charge, but no storage ever.
After I tried almost every fix with no avail and one fix advised using an unRoot app. I used that and not only can I still not boot into recovery, I cant even use my root apps like rom manager or setcpu. The recovery script still shows up if I hold down then press up when booting, so I think I'm at some kind of semi root. I think I'm screwed at this point, but if there's ANY way to just get my back to stock again, thats all I ask because Root on the TF doesnt seem as worth it compared to with phones.
Thanks in advance for any help.

For your "root" problems. Try looking in system/xbin to see if you still have SU there.
If not see if you have SU in system/bin and copy it over to system/xbin.

Use "easy flash" to go back to recovery and then root if you like to... but go back to stock so that u r on latest stock OS
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda app-developers app

Ok im trying easy flash but i cant even get into apx mode. Volume up and powerjust causes it to reset, i cant even install the drivers.

I also just learned that I do not have root anymore by using the rootchecker app, despite still being on a custom firmware.

Did you install clockwork mod with rom manager or NVFlash?
If you installed it through NVflash, clockwork mod is permanently on your phone by holding Volume Down + Power....if your not getting there....you didnt.....
If you used Rom Manager, you fake-flashed and won't be able to get there. The only way is by using NVFlash to install clockwork and restoring your nandroid. Go here
OR if you just wanna go back to stock, factory reset by holding both volume keys and power then releasing power when the screen is on....Good luck!

Yea I used NVFlash and just hit the root button, then it asked to install something since I didn't have it, I agreed, then it loaded again and was complete. Superuser was added to my apps and that's it. I think I have a brick lol, oh well, I honestly hated not having an led for notifications anyway. I got a weird screen a few mins ago though and it was stuck for like an hour. It said "updating s/w, please wait". Then went away and now it won't go past the LG screen...
Any ideas or anyone want to buy it for like 130?

The way you described NVFlash seems like you didn't actually use NVFlash. There is no root button involved with NVFlash.
To root the phone, you probably used superoneclickroot.
To install clockworkmod recovery you could have installed it through rom manager or installed it manually using NVFlash, which is a command line utility (unless you used the one click clockwork recovery found in this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847).
Can you clear these things up so we can further help.
I'll also buy it for 130 if you don't want to deal with it.
Yea you're right, I forgot, sorry finals have fogged my mind the last few days. I used superoneclick for sure and flashed the recovery through ROM manager. Will the NVFlash help get to somewhere to flash by backup or hell, even the stock rom? I just got back to my computer at home and am gonna try some things.. I'll report back..
Edit: Ok I think I found the problem. I have Eagleblood 1.02 ROM and I loaded a Kernel from a p990 (Optimus 2x) and NOT the p999 (G2x). When I plug my phone in it says LGE P990 now. So is there any fixing this? I can plug it in and it'll popo up with the notification window for the safe remove and mass storage but I still can't access the recovery image??
You should definitely flash clockworkmod recovery via NVFlash. The easiest way would be to follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
It provides an easy to use user interface to NVFlash to flash clockworkmod recovery. After that, I guess you could flash CM7 nightly and hopefully it'll load the approriate kernel. I'm new to android so I'm not sure if ROMs contain the kernel too, but I'm guessing it is because looking at the CM7 source, they seem to include the kernel. Then after that you can flash the stock nandroid found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274
Note: you could possibly just flash the stock nandroid instead of CM7 and it could still work out, but I'm not sure.
Sweet NVFlash fixed it, I have my recovery image again, flashed my backup and am right where I left it, Thanks man!
Im also new to rooting and flashing.....I flashed using rommanager and everything was fine till I flashed cyanogen...now I can't get to rcocery screen and I have no computer for the next few days....don't get me wrong ibwant to keep this rom-2.3.4 but it doesn't come with Google apps which i have installed on my SD but can't flash.....someonehelp
Lol, I'm nowhere near new at rooting/flashing but this phone is the first to ever NOT have a back up plan..
You'll have to do exactly what I did. Honestly, NO ONE should flash anything without the REAL recovery image and NOT through ROM manager, otherwise in this case your without a phone until you can get to a computer.
Use the NVFlash method posted above, it takes a couple minutes and then its permanent. Afterwards, if you ever flash something buggy or broken, you can always fall back on vol down and power..

[Q] Rooted G2x is bricked, will LG be able to tell if I return it under warranty?

I'm positive my G2x bricked itself and I need to replace it asap! It had been crashing repeatedly since I first got it and I have had to do several hard resets (pressing power + volume down). The day after I last reset it, it froze on the LG start up screen and won't do anything else. No custom ROMs were installed and no back-ups besides Titanium. If there is no way to restore it, will LG or T-mobile be able to tell it was rooted and the bloatware was removed?
dude if u can plug in your usb and get sound your not bricked even if your phone just gets to the lg screen, bricked is when u get nada no lights no nothing when charging, nothing!, try installing recovery the nvflash one then put the stock rom back on your phone if u cant get it to fire back up, search development theres a oneclick nvflash recovery, and a rooted stock image floating around, remember search, u will be ok
also u said u removed bloatware what exactly did u remove??
I removed App Pack, Wifi Calling, Car Home, Qik video, & Swype. I get no sound, just starts up and never gets past the 2nd LG start-up screen that has the Android with a striped bar. I can't get NV to work & my PC wont even recognize my G2x as being plugged in via USB. I'm using my b/f G2x right now which I modified much more extensively but it has very few bugs.

If its been crashing since you got it, it could be dodgy hardware. Get on the phone to your carrier and have a moan off and they should offer to replace it. They wont know nothing because I think they will just throw your old one away.

Wouldn't they try to flash their own ROM & attempt to refurbish it? If so, would something like Super User remain on the hard drive for them to find?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I don't think they bother. Just say its been crashing since you first got it and they will write it down as dodgy hardware. You have to give the old one back to the courier who drlivers ya new one, so if they do see superuser its too late to do anything.

so u get no sound at all plugged into usb?? hmmm how come u cant get nvflash to work i might be able to help
I would go to the One-Click ClockworkMod NvFlasher thread below. it is in the development section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
It contains NVFlash and APX drivers, a CMW recovery, and the one-click installation tool. If you "CAREFULLY follow the instructions in the OP, you will have a recovery that you can use to either flash a different ROM or the Stock ROM (also in a thread in the development section (Not the Firmware).
AFTER flashing the Stock ROM, you could run just the one-click .exe only again and reinstall the stock recovery.
Just exchange it and be done with it.
Not sure if this means anythjg but I got this from the g2 forum.

I tried the nvflash it with no luck. If I'm holding down both of the volume buttons, my computer recognizes there being an apx device and says its functioning normally. I tried reinstalling the apx driver and also the LG driver. No matter what, nvflash says there is no USB device detected. I may be sol.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054492 ok so go to that link now after u go to it scroll down to the newest recovery now copy the commands, like right click mouse and choose copy first tho, then hold both vol buttons, THEN plug in usb and hold the buttons the WHOLE time then open command prompt type cd \ ....let it go to next line then just type, start...then paste commands in new window that is what worked for me hold the vol buttons the whole time!... let it do its thing in the command prompt window then when its done u should see s/w upgrade on your phone let it sit for a minute just to be safe then pull usb...and your golden
Press both vol buttons and plug in the USB, but don't let go.
Issue the command nvflash --sync, does it come back with some data on your g2x? If it doesn't, remove drivers, reinstall, etc. and try again.
If it does, disconnect USB, hold down both vol buttons and plug in your USB again, don't let go. Now issue the nvflash command to flash the recovery.
If I issue a nvflash command once, the second time it won't work. I would need to reconnect USB everytime.
I'll give it a whirl when I get home shortly!

yes listen to this man he helped me, good dude rite there also the way i tryed worked too but yes try what he said cuz if u cant even get that then u have to reinstall drivers
Just thought I would let you know that I had an issue with my newly replaced G2X where I was also freezing bloatware (stuff I had done before) and it froze on me. I could only get to the LG logo and after a few seconds it would dim, then turn off. Only a battery pull would turn it back on. I tried so many times to "wipe, restore, and wipe" I thought I was screwed. After leaving it in my pocket it turned on about 5 hours later when the battery was at 1% or less. I don't know why it did, but I was able to throw it on the charger until i could unroot it and send it back. Funny thing is, even after restoring and unrooting, the next time i turned the phone off it again went into the LG logo freeze. Sounds like software/hardware issues to me
Does yours seem like the same story.

[Q] Can't boot into recovery/Boot loop issue

I got my TF yesterday, I rooted today, and everything has been working marvelously.
That is, until I got ambitious. This is the fifth android device I've installed a custom ROM to, so I figured it would be smooth sailing. I did a nandroid backup in CWM, and then installed the newest version of Prime, which then refused to boot. Ever the optimist, I restore my backup. Which also won't boot. Then I get frustrated. Moving on, I try out Revolver, which then boots just fine. I download Revolver Parts, and it tells me there is an update (I installed 3.5.2), which I confirm for install. The tablet reboots, and never makes it into CWM..
Every time it boots, I get to the initial screen, that says Eee PC, Asus, and NVidia. after two or three seconds, it goes black, and starts again. If I tell it to enter recovery, it reboots and never gets to CWM. The only way I found to get it to boot is to hold volume down, and then NOT hit volume up to enter recovery, and cold boot android from there.
The tablet is still functioning, but without being able to get into recovery, I'm feeling paranoid about something happening that would need recovery to... recover from.
I wasn't able to find any answers after looking for most of the day; I thought perhaps NVflash would help (I can get into USB mode by holding volume up), but the download link isn't working. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have heard of anything like this before? Any answers at all would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

yea, this happen somtime, not sure why, especially with prime for me. use nvflash and push revolver 3.5.2 with cwm, busybox, and su. then make a nand and try and restore it.
you could always try holding low vol + pwr for 6 secs then let go of owr but still hold low vol untill promt tells you to hit high vol to load cwm. that should work as well....
Thanks for the replies, both of you. Nvflash fixed it, works like a charm now. I love this device

Stuck! Hep! Won't get past Asus screen or go into apx mode

Ok, I swear I have read 100 pages of similar problems, but it looks like everyone else is able to get into apx mode at least to run nvflash or easy flasher.
1. Turn on xformer with power button - stuck at Asus Eee Pad screen
2. Try to boot into recovery with vol - + power;
- volume up to enter recovery, ded android with an exclamation
- volume down to choose between 'wipe' and 'cold boot' both result in getting stuck at Asus screen
3. Plug in xformer, hold power and vol +; nothing. Never shows up in device manager and it doesn't beep or anything like the ones in all the videos do.
I really just want to get up and running at the very least, as I handle all of my businesses billing through my xformer, but my ultimate goal is to get on the HD-ROM.
I have downloaded the newest firmware from asus, have all the drivers installed (I think), have tried booting into recovery with one, some or all of the new software on the sdcard.
Any more ideas I can try? Do you just have to hold your mouth right to get it into apx mode? I have held those buttons so much I think I'm getting Nintendo thumb!!!
Thanks all!
nobody?
Throw something at me! What update.zip file do I put on the sd card? I have tried putting the newest asus update.zip on there with both its original name and the update.zip name. still comes up with a dead android and an exclamation point.
Download a firmware from Asus, rename it to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip
Put it on the root of your sd card and boot into recovery, hopefully it will flash it and let you boot up.
As for NVFlash, make sure you install teh APX driver.
Still won't get past about a second or two of trying to boot with EP101_SDUPDATE.zip on the sd card. Think I'm stuck, or is there something else I need to try?
Thanks!!
..Do the apx process and try using brks tool......just dont flash touch recovery! I couldnt get the drivers to show but still managed to nvflash recovery using the tool. Its install solarnz external sd recovery so you can put a rom zip onto micro sd.
My issue was after doing this normal on off reboot kept booting to recovery and i had to cold boot into the rom.
I tried the wheelie beta and it has ended up wiping the tf completely.....so dont do that lol. Its still a soft brick as i could still nvflash recovery but decided that aslongs its wiped of root etc id just send it to asus.
If brks tool flashes for you then id try nvflashing prime and see if that works.......i think it will but i ran out of time and patience this morning to do it......at your own risk of course.

i am the same issue by flashed the touch CWM and window wont able to reconigzed my TF as a APX device
i tried many drivers it still not able to work.
how can i get back to normal CWM? i dont have havy roms or update.zip in internal roms.. and Touch CWM wont able to recongized Removerable sdcard
god~~
The root and backup option should flash you an external recovery.
While tablet reboots hold down volume up and power until reboot stops.
Then try brks tool again and select root and backup.......during the process it may ask if you want to back up but its not worth while as i dont think theres anything to backup. You should end up with ext micro sd recovery.
As i said id look for the prime rom thread and download the nv flash version and see if it works first.
If asus restore the wiped TF without question and everything goes ok il let you know as it may be worth wiping it with wheelie nv recovery and just RMA.
I just simply CAN'T get it into apx mode. I've installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Trying to flash ep101_sdupdate.zip still just results in an error. crap.
Hold Volume-UP BEFORE holding power, then hold power for 5 secs (Still holding vol-up( doing this all while connected. It should show in device manager.
Couldnt get Tf to show in device manager either no matter what.
I know it may not seem as though its in apx but if it has stopped rebooting when you do v up and power then it seems it is......
Seems to be an issue thats starting to become more common and very difficult to fix properly.
PC will just not recognise the TF.
Hmm - sorry i couldnt help more but id still try nv flashing Prime and if you can get to a blank screen using volume up and power without the TF rebooting theres a chance its in apx.
Best of luck dude.......

no better way to fix it than that
nice one
Yea, I like it pretty good so far. Volume is WAY louder on the 300, even though there is only one speaker. The screen also gets darker, which is nice if you watch tv or browse the interwebs in the bed. Also, wifi reception is great. Haven't tried gps yet, but I'm sure it is improved.
It did get really laggy, but I did a factory reset and it seemed to clear out the cobwebs.
Thanks for y'all's help! I'm still going to try to unbrick that tf-101 and sell it or something. Hate to have a $400 paperweight...
People will buy bricked ones on Ebay for a reduced price, just clarify that it is in fact bricked.

[Q] TF101 Running CM10 Won't Factory Reset

I've been scouring the Googlenets for days now trying to figure out how to fix this, and nobody has either had the exact same problem I have (doubtful), or no one has posted it.
I'm currently running CM10 and Android 4.1.2. I was planning on upgrading to lollipop via http://forum.xda-developers.com/eee-pad-transformer/development/rom-t2942560, but somehow my recovery stopped working. I had TWRP 2.3 and was going to upgrade to 2.8 (as recommended), and that's where something went wrong. I'm not exactly sure what I did, or what step I was on when it happened, but I rebooted the tablet and ended up with a never ending Asus splash screen. POWER + VOLUME DOWN to access recovery didn't get me anywhere but the same splash screen with some white text promising a recovery that would never come.
I tried APX flashing with Easy Flasher to no avail. I tried POWER + VOLUME DOWN, wait, then select wipe. Nothing. When I POWER + VOLUME DOWN, and wait, I can boot into CM10 just fine and everything appears dandy. That's when I tried Factory Reset in the settings. Still nothing!
Am I being dumb? Any help or even just some empathy would be great about now. What should I do?
Thanks in advance.
bump for luck...
I'm guessing this is a new problem and the device is too old to tinker.
I would suggest returning to stock and starting over again.

By returning to stock do you mean factory reset? My problem is I am unable to factory reset. Do you know another way to factory reset that I didn't try? Thanks.
I had a little time to mess around with this again, but unfortunately I didn't succeed. I tried using EasyFlasher from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012. It taught me that the difficulties continue. It would appear tat I am not able to turn on APX mode, as I get no connection after holding power and volume up for what seems like an eternity.
I also started to wonder if something is wrong with my partitions. When I look at storage in settings, it says I have 13 GB total space, but when I add up the apps, pictures, audio, downloads, and available, it only ends up at 4 GB. That's weird.
Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like your OS is still loading? If so you might try this apk. "Reboot2Recovery" if that gets you into recovery you can flash the new twrp from there.
No luck. It boots to the never ending Eee Pad splash screen, which is the same screen it hangs on if I reboot normally.

None of them had an answer to my problem. When I do the volume down + power I get the two icons, wipe and cold boot. Wipe doesn't do anything and the other option puts me back in my OS.
I really think it's something to do with my partitions, but I haven't been able to find anything to fix it. Is there a way to reset my partitions without APX? I can't seem to APX either.

When I read your problem again t seems that you have CM10 installed with stock recovery? Must be due to failed install in your first post.
Did you try the firmware download from the asus link above? Wonder what happens if you copy to system and if cm10 would recognize it as a system update ans install.

Watch out for asus's zip in a zip.
I dusted this off with the long break. Tried to install the Asus firmware and ended up hanging on the load screen again. I'm starting to think it must be something with my bootloader, but I can't seem to figure out how to get in there.
This is probably a lost cause at this point. Thanks for the help.
Happy new year!
Edit:
I decided not to give up and ended up getting recovery back! Woohoo! I'm not really sure exactly what the problem was, but I was looking here (http://blog.chazomatic.us/2013/10/27/updating-and-rooting-an-asus-transformer-tablet/) and it looks like the following fixed it:
Code:
adb shell mv /data/local/tmp /data/local/tmp.bak
adb shell ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /data/local/tmp
I'm still not sure why, but now it boots normally and goes into recovery just fine. :good:
