How to modify ROM (add/remove stuff)? - General Topics

I've searched all over the net but to no avail.
I want to add some apps into the /system/app folder of the ROM, but whenever I flash the ROM (I did all the procedures - sign the ROM and all), the apps do not work. Instead, they force close everytime I try to open them, and in App Manager, they have absolutely no storage at all - they're blank. 0MB.
I extracted the 31/08/2012 nightly build of CM10 for Samsung Galaxy Mini, then edited all that I needed before compressing and signing the .zip file. However, that doesn't seem to work, although I can flash the ROM.
Is there a way where I can add in my own apps (as system apps into /system/app) and remove selected ringtones(.ogg)? A tutorial would very much be appreciated! Thanks in advance

For the ringtones, you can simply delete them. For the apps, you need to make sure they're compatible with your Android version/device and they must also have the correct permissions.

What sort of apps are you trying to add?

How do I get the correct permissions? (How do I tweak them?)

Things like replacing Trebuchet with Launcher Pro, basically replacing apps of my choice and adding in some more like Go Keyboard.

help: how to add removable apk to roms?

I wasn't able to find info about this until now. But I need to know how to make the apks I include in a rom removable. I guess, maybe, I have to copy into a different folder instead or /system/app. is it right?
thanks
you have to install it in data directory not in system directory. so data/app
ok, thanks, but, if it doesn't exist, should I create it?
no u should not create it because then it wouldnt be a proper directory for your rom, the rom may not recognize it, i think.
which rom are you on? most rom has a data directory, that is where third party apps are installed and where apps downloaded from the market is also installed
this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556962&highlight=enomther
ok i see what u mean when there's no data directory. what you should test out first is go to market and download an app. then see where that app is install. see if it created a data directory or not. it should...
I had a look using root explorer, and there is a folder in the root called /data/app , and there inside are every installed apk, even the ones I installed by astro...
and there is another one called /data/data where I find folder of every app too
ANd another one called /data/app-private (there I found one apk that I downloaded from market.
I try to download a new one
Yup put your apks in data/app
on a related note, is there any way to flash unsigned ROMs? like if I want to drop .apk 's into the data folder of a rom before flashing?

[Q] apk installer zip file to bootstrap app re-installs

Hi all.
I play with quite a few different roms, and currently add a little program apkinstaller to the rom before I load it.
I use the apkinstaller to first re-install TB off the SD card, and then I use TB to re-install everything else, then I go setup my accounts for market and syncing (don't need the cloud servers to do the re-installs wasting bandwidth).
It would be even better if I could put this apkinstaller and TB into a zip file which I could install after loading the rom.
If I can get it to load from a zip file, then I wouldn't even need the apk installer; I would just install TB from the zip file, reboot, and reload from there.
Where can I find information about what I need to do in a zip file to install an apk?
Thanks all.
Yeah I have the same question. Any one have any suggestions?
no-one able to assist
Seems there isn't much interest in replying - I assume this rather than no-one actually knowing.
I need my post count up anyway so I might as well reply with what I have seen. There was a thread somewhere else that I saw someone had a fresh_install.zip script to delete a set of files, and add launcher pro. I guess I need to pull that apart and see what I can work out from it. I only want to do the single file add, so it hopefully will be simple.
easier solution already available
Adding to my own thread again in case anyone else is interested.
I have been looking at the file, and have information about what would need to be done, but now find an easier alternative. It seems that many (most?) of the file managers have an apk installer built in. The roms typically come with a file manager, so I can just use that to start off my re-install process- nothing else required.
Will probably still play with the .zip file though just to understand what it needs.

Way to "pre-install" apps for new ROMs?

So now that I've jumped into trying new ROMs, aside from Titanium Backup and the like, is there a way I can "pre-install" apps/apks much like slipstreaming a Windows install?
A lot of the basic stuff that I'll download immediately (maps, drive, chrome, facebook, etc) - I have the apk files...can I just open up the ROM's zip file and insert them into data/app or system/app? If I just back up everything via TB, is it just the same?
Place it in system/app then when you flash it you will have those apps pre-installed.

copy apk files only in /data/app because /system/app is reserved from system applications and /system partition doesn't have to much space or you'll be overwhelmed also don't forget to sign .zip file -your rom if not CWM will refuse to flash it also to sign .zip archive take a look at this post
hmm...is there any way to get the apk's from the phone? Can i copy them from data/app from my phone and then put them in the rom zip file?

Yeah.
Nice, thanks guys. I'll give it a shot tonight on a new ROM and see if it helps cut down on installation/download time.

[Q] How to get gapps-jb-xxx.zip file under JB

I just installed the latest JB file from CM10, as announced on the site. The installation went smoothly, and without any problem. However, in the instructions provided, there was a link to the Google Apps for this version, named gapps-jb-20120717-signed.zip. I also downloaded the file, and it is also put under /sdcard on my tablet. But I can't install this zip file. I have CWM version 5.8.3.1 installed, which seemed to work fine with this CM JellyBean. I am getting an error message about the zip file when trying to install the Google Apps file mentionned above. On the announcement page with the links to download the files, they only give the links to the two -signed.zip files. I assumed that both zip files should be installed the same way, but it appears they are not. Can anyone help me ?
NB: I use the Samsung Docking station/keyboard. Anyone had any issue with this before ?
Thank
Extract the apk's from the zip folder and install them normally! Few apps won't install this way. Put those apk's in "system/app" and change the permission to rw-r--r--
Reboot your phone and the apps should be there!
Sent From My Galaxy SL Running CM9
Bad file
Although the file was pointed properly in the page, the actually downloaded file had a mad MD5 checksum, which was not displayed on the download link, only on the download page. I also noticed that after restarting, I had a strange display, where instead of having the default green wallpaper, I was having lines of random color bars. Another reboot, and it now seems to be fine again.
I also mentioned that I have this Samsung keyboard that attaches to the tablet, and has a replication port. The keys on the top, like Back, Home, etc, seem to work only half the time. More testing will be required on this.
Good Idea !

That's an idea, and I will also look at this. I guess this is what will give me the Google Apps program so I can re-download and/or reinstall the programs that I used to have under HoneyComb 3.2.
Thanks. I will try this too. :

Copy Samsung apps to other devices

Hello, is there a way to copy a Samsung app (e.g. Email in Galaxy Ace 2) to another device of different brand?

Yes you can. If you can identify the .apk file of a certain application, you can simply copy it to
another device and install there.
This is something I used to do whenever I see my friends mobiles. I will checkout if they have any cool
App. If I like any, I will find out the installation file (.apk extension) and I will Bluetooth/superbeam it to my mobile
and install...as simple as that...
And my easiest way to find the apk file is "just search for 'apk' in file explorer"....

This simply does not work for the Sammy apps they are kinda rigged to the framework .
One must heavily modify the apps to make them work on non Sammy ROMs
This is the reason why non of the sense apps are ported to CM ROMs
sorry for any ty¶°s

That's what I was afraid of.. Because I've tried copying the samsung mail app in different ways to my ZTE (apk copy, titanium backup etc) and none of them did work. I also tried copying the exchange app but no luck either.

And another reason is that the system apps present in stock roms are odexed .
One simply isn't able to port Sammy apps without going full retard

Have you tried direct copy inside system? Since you said you've tried Titanium Backup, it means your device has been rooted right?
Enter your system and change its permission to copy the application there into your memory card... hope it works...
