Way to "pre-install" apps for new ROMs? - General Questions and Answers

So now that I've jumped into trying new ROMs, aside from Titanium Backup and the like, is there a way I can "pre-install" apps/apks much like slipstreaming a Windows install?
A lot of the basic stuff that I'll download immediately (maps, drive, chrome, facebook, etc) - I have the apk files...can I just open up the ROM's zip file and insert them into data/app or system/app? If I just back up everything via TB, is it just the same?

Place it in system/app then when you flash it you will have those apps pre-installed.

copy apk files only in /data/app because /system/app is reserved from system applications and /system partition doesn't have to much space or you'll be overwhelmed also don't forget to sign .zip file -your rom if not CWM will refuse to flash it also to sign .zip archive take a look at this post

hmm...is there any way to get the apk's from the phone? Can i copy them from data/app from my phone and then put them in the rom zip file?

Yeah.

Nice, thanks guys. I'll give it a shot tonight on a new ROM and see if it helps cut down on installation/download time.

help: how to add removable apk to roms?

I wasn't able to find info about this until now. But I need to know how to make the apks I include in a rom removable. I guess, maybe, I have to copy into a different folder instead or /system/app. is it right?
thanks
you have to install it in data directory not in system directory. so data/app
ok, thanks, but, if it doesn't exist, should I create it?
no u should not create it because then it wouldnt be a proper directory for your rom, the rom may not recognize it, i think.
which rom are you on? most rom has a data directory, that is where third party apps are installed and where apps downloaded from the market is also installed
this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556962&highlight=enomther
ok i see what u mean when there's no data directory. what you should test out first is go to market and download an app. then see where that app is install. see if it created a data directory or not. it should...
I had a look using root explorer, and there is a folder in the root called /data/app , and there inside are every installed apk, even the ones I installed by astro...
and there is another one called /data/data where I find folder of every app too
ANd another one called /data/app-private (there I found one apk that I downloaded from market.
I try to download a new one
Yup put your apks in data/app
on a related note, is there any way to flash unsigned ROMs? like if I want to drop .apk 's into the data folder of a rom before flashing?

ok your running a reg rom system, thus meaning 1.5/1.6 non hero. i can teach you step by step on how to set up "signing .zip's". its super super convenient!! i promise and its not to hard. just pm me if you need help. its way way easier to flash a rom with whatever apk you want then to push them and hope you pushed them to the right spot.

Swipe .APK

I extracted the .APK file for Swipe just in case anyone needs it. I am planning on using it once custom roms come out and i need to reinstall swipe. I have not tested this, so it may not work.

How did touchwiz get deleted? If all you did was a system restore it should still be there. I was trying to backup some system apps also with Titanium Backup, but for whatever reason they did not have .APK files, so it was a little out of my league to figure out how to do it.

Simply download a froyo asop rom. Any will work except cyanogenmod. Extact the zip, go into system app, and look for browser. Drag and drop onto root of your sd, get some sort of file manager app from the market, and install it. I think this will work, but i have never tried it.
Until you drag the file onto your sd, this is all on the computer.
Can I get the link to download the file
can someone post up the link to download the stock browser please

I will once I get home and test it out to see if it works. Check back in 30 minutes.
..........thanks
im pretty sure it wont work. i put the browser.apk on the sd card and when i went to astro to install it, it asked me to uninstall the current browser. so i think the only way it might work is if you rooted the phone and then pulled the sense browser and pushed the aosp browser
o i see thank anyway
pushing the browser.apk doesnt work either
how about you just rename the browser.apk thats already in the system\app folder and any odex file in the \system\app folder then install it with the installer app from the market or install command via adb......
hhmmm ????

How to install apks from .zip

Sometimes I find helpful apps on the internet using my pc. When I download them, they come as an apk, which i put into the root of my sd card. I use a file manager to find it, click it, then install it. EASY.
Well, lately I've run into a few that only come as a .zip. Most of them look like they have the same stuff in them. Anyways, how would I install an apk that comes as a .zip? Do i do it like how I flash stuff, by going into recovery and installing zip from sd?
If it is a flashable zip you can flash it. Otherwise, extract the apk from the zip and install.
Can I delete apks and zips from my root folder that i have installed, to make space and keep it neat, without it hurting the functionality of the stuff? For example, I put a ROM's zip in the root, and flashed it. can i delete that zip now?
I cant install the zips from recovery! It starts the install, then goes to 'finding update blah bla" ... 'installing update blah blah" installation aborted

Yes you can and also those zipped apps some are cracked apps which I believe it's against rules to discuss but for the rest that do come zipped just extract them your pc and look for the apk and put it on your SD card and install

Could still use an answer for this.
Also, to give you guys an example of what I'm talking about:
I'm trying to test the security of my home network in various ways. I downloaded DroidSheep, which comes as a ZIP. There is no apk file in the zip. Trying to 'flash' it, isn't working. I'm getting the messages i posted earlier.

Can I delete Final-Fixed.zip off my SD card without it messing stuff up? Same with the install files for the kernel, and booster?

BIG THANKS.
I finally figured out what to do, about the installing. If i download a zip file, that comes like these that i can't get to install..... it's because I was supposed to click the d/l link from my phone! It's all good now!
While you can delete zips after installation, it's always a good idea to keep your ROM zip on the SD card. That way if you decide to play around with stuff that you don't know alot about, and mess up your phones functionality, you can reflash without needing a computer.

I prefer to have a recovery backup. I never leave the ROM installation on my SD.

I do both. I like to keep 2 backups and at least the ROM I'm on.
I currently have 6 ROMs on my SD. Plus a few movies. And my music collection. A few kernels. Maybe 50-60 apps. Yeah, as you can see I put everything on there LOL and I still have 18.5GB free out of 29.7 available (32GB card).

sometimes you can just rename the file extension .zip to .apk then just install as normal.

[GT-P6210] [XXMD3 De-Odexed & ZipAligned]

Please make a nandroid backup first!!!
Did not include Root, in case there's one derp that doesn't want this rooted. If you were rooted, you may need to re-root after flashing this. Preferrably after booting this.
ALSO: I highly recommend complete removal/uninstall of Xposed for safety.
Flash in custom recovery that is compatible with jellybean.(CWM 6.0.2.7+) or TWRP 2.5.0.0
This update.zip will wipe your /cache and /data/dalvik-cache and /preload/symlink/system/app's automagically.
Keep calm as it is extracting and be patient on reboot and enjoy...
This is entire /framework, /system/app and /preload/symlinks only, nothing removed so file size is beefy at 405MB. Also included Books and Videos .apk's from CSC in case they weren't already there.
Try to go easy on my hosting sites so they don't get suspended, I may host it at another if I need to.
Should anything go wrong, simply advanced restore /system only.

I have downloaded your Rom and had a look it it before to flash. I saw that there is no /lib, no /bin, no /xbin and no /etc folders.
Is it intentional? Without the jb libs some apps like let's say Google now won't work. Not that I am a fan of Google but I mean, are you sure that it's ok to flash this Rom?
You are supposed to flash OVER stock ROM. Quite simple really. It is not intended to be a stand alone ROM. I maybe should have made that more clear, edited OP now. Thanks.
Some people think there is slight improvement by deodex/zipalign,
It does help theming/mods, as .odex editing is a pain, I have tried tab UI Mod using odex and it doesnt work, However after deodex I can mod things like Tab UI fairly easy.
Thats the main reason I deodexed these this time, I had to have Tab UI.
I see, so I will have too download stock jb first.
Ok, I 'll do it tomorrow and then I'll report here, because now I'm busy with other stuff.
Thanks for deodexing the Rom, it will save me some time!
Works fine. Thank you.

Thank you sir for your response, and you are welcome.
Ok, I have installed everything and it works, thank you.
But how can I download the unwanted apps that are in the /prelod folder?
Everytime I try it says read only file system...
You need to be rooted, otherwise you should be able to disable them in settings, but not delete them unless you are rooted.

I am rooted. Actually I found a way to do it, I just unzipped your Rom, removed what I didn't need, then repacked it and flashed it.
But in the preload/Internal_SdCard/Samsung folder there are many other unnecessary files like images, sounds and video.
How can I delete them? Because all together they weight like 90 mb..
If youre rooted, grab a real file explorer like root explorer mount system r/w and just delete
Otherwise you might try adb or even terminal, but I suggest a file explorer.
Agree, they are total dead weight.

Strange, my every day file explorer can delete files in data and system but didn't manage to mount rw preload. So I followed your advice and used another one. And I deleted everything of course.
Thanks!
Apart from that the Rom is nice, much better than ics. I had to remove the usual bloatware, more than 150 apks, but that's another story
installed p6210 version on my p6211 and i got once freez, maybe cuz cpu was really in use (downloading, surfing in net) hmm how u think, i will write if this happen again. anyway thanks kris i hope u will build multi window mod too good luck
If the guys over at TAB 2 forums (current WIP) make any progress and have good info/documentation, I'll give it a shot.
Really liking PA (4.2.2) though
Works great man!!! thanks!
Sorry
