Wallet - Won't actually pay. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've got Google Wallet installed, and cards activated, but I can't seem to make it actually pay...
A couple of trips to the local McDonalds - waking up my phone and waving it over the red sensor part of their card reader does nothing... unlocking or having wallet open at the time doesn't help either.
What am I doing wrong?

Does your phone beep to let you know the nfc receiver has picked up an rfid signal?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

Did you have the NFC box check under settings more settings. It allows information to be sent between NFC device which is necessary.

No response at all from my phone or the terminal. Might as well have been waving my hand over it.
Does the phone need a physical "bump" instead of a wave to do its thing? I would expect this to work much the same as my proximity company ID badge.
NFC is turned on. SBeam is off (does that matter?)

I always touch my phone back to the spot on the card reader. Do you have a case on your phone? There is only like a half inch of play before the phone is too far away. Try it again by tapping the phone.

yeah. i get embarrass too if wallet doesnt work. how embarrassing!
but they have nfc soda vending machines in Atlantis hotel casino in reno! i tried it there with wallet on my nexus without the embarrassment and it works!

"waving it over the red sensor part"
You dont know what your doing if you "waved" it. You must hold it up to the scanner for it to recognize. Also, if you have a case, it takes longer to pick up because the case adds thickness which reduces the bandwidth NFC can utilize due to a weaker signal.
Experiences: 8 successful payments. 1 failed (Walgreens isnt there yet)

There is no red sensor where I used it. 7-11 and cumbys. It's the grey part above the debit/credit card scanner that has the nfc symbol....Walgreen's failed for me also the manager said they just recently installed.

I've had the same exact problem as the OP. I tried mine at a local gas station where a friend works so I didn't look like a complete dunderhead and I tried it on 6 separate occasions and tried installing it several different times/ways and could never get it to work. They have the EZ Pay NFC reader above the credit card machine and every time I tried it it would not work no matter if I tapped it, took it out of the TPU case, got the cashier to hit credit, opened and unlocked the app. Nothing. It just simply refused to work. Maybe I'm just an idiot though, I just assume the EZ Pay NFC card reader would read my NFC chip in my phone. Maybe it won't. I am just at a loss. I just reset the app and went to my backup nandroid and left it along after all the attempts because I was so embarrassed.

i've only used it once thus far, i was worried it wouldn't work right since i never used NFC payments before so i had no idea how to do it......it took about 15 secs for GW to open up from a locked status on my phone then about another 20 secs for it to recognize the nfc scanner and to process a payment to mcdonalds, not bad, i had my card out in preparation though lol

Try without a case.I had no comm using NFC due to my case blocking the signal somehow. took it off and now it works every time.

I had thought that maybe it would take a bit for GW to notice the NFC reader but i left it there for a full 5 minutes at one point, I was running my mouth, and it never pulled up GW nor recognized the NFC reader. Also this was with the phone off. Another thing I found funny about it was that it the app would not pull up as Ready to Use until I had let it set up my Play Store credit card they have on file. I dont know if the OP is having the same exact problem as I am but it sounds exactly the same. I have also tested my NFC with my girlfriends GS3 to see if maybe I recieved a bad battery or maybe my phone was somehow faulty but it pulled the fileshare using S-Beam off without a hitch so.....

My phone wasn't off, just locked. If the phone's off then the nfc reader is supposed to be off too. I found that just quickly opening GW right before touching it to the reader makes it happen almost instantly. At least for me already.
Beamed via NFC through the local store to the internet from my SGS3.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. When I said off o meant my screen was locked. My phone just edited that part out. I have tried it like you did also, by opening the app right before touching it to the reader. Still doesn't work. It may just be an issue with my phone. No matter how I try to use it to pay it won't work...

i've had no issues having my nfc chip being scanned but i have yet to complete a purchase successfully. i'm going to chalk it up to the terminals not being configured correctly... my other nfc functions work fine.

Some dont work for some odd reasons because the storemanager/higher ups dont know what it is so they might have disabled it for what ever reason.
I know Walgreens has scanners but does not work JUST yet, they are partners of the whole NFC movement thing.
Stores that have worked for me are.
Chevron, 7-11 ( had to tilt there scanner up), McDonalds, BJ's (like walmart), Vending Machines.
Doesnt work: Walgreens, Some Random gas station out of town
I find that if you see a LED blinking or on thats connected to the scanner, the scanner works, but if it doesnt scan right away its the case's fault or not placing it.
Source: I like to consider myself a Wallet expert haha, my thread is over in Developer Section to get wallet as well. Also all my purchases have been used using a Otterbox Defender, and take about 3-5 seconds to complete the transaction.

mine failed as well at a jack in the box drive thru. looked like a fool. haha
i took my case off, opened the app, clicked the lock in the corner, entered my pin, and held it up against the reader for a good few seconds but nothing happened. nfc was on. their reader had like 4 spots for lights and the first one was on with a solid green light so not sure, hopefully it was their reader. will try again at a 7-11 if I can get over the embarassment

LOL at you guys thinking your case is giving you a problem, most likely you are not putting the battery (where the NFC is) up to the correct part of the terminal (your phone should chime or make a noise when its recognized, just like when Android Beam comes up),
or just plain out the terminal doesn't work (not your phone), a mcdonalds and wendys in my area they have them but nothing happens and one mcd across town works perfectly fine. Just depends on the vendor.
I have the Otterbox Defender on both my S3 and Galaxy Nexus, and haven't had a problem or delay yet as long as their terminal is working correctly, and they are pretty thick cases. As long as you line it up right and they work shouldn't be a problem

Well said and 100% accurate. I bet the problems people are facing are user error or the terminal just doesnt work.

I've used mine on about three different occasions and it worked perfectly. But what's funny, I was in a local vzw store buying something. They have what looks like the press pass set up, tried to use it and it wouldn't go through. The girl checking me out was surprised and had no idea that you could even do that. Anyway, my point is that even though the card reader looks like it will work, if they don't have it set up it won't. Vzw's looks just like the ones at McDonald's.

[Q] Got my Square card reader today

I finally received my little square card reader from Squareup today. I'm anxious to get a chance to use it.
I'm curious if anyone else has gotten one yet and started using it on a regular basis. What do you think of it? I'm also wondering if anyone one out there has found some other uses for it? Near as I can tell, it's a standard magnetic reader head, so there's not reason it couldn't read any magnetic striped card. I think it'd be cool of those password/credit card/bank account app could use this dongle to read your card number instead of having to type it in manually. I've already used an audio recording app and successfully swiped and recorded the audio stream that comes from the reader.
So what are your guy's thoughts, idea's, suggestions for this niftly little dongle. Will it survive, or is it destined to be another Cuecat
Mine came in yesterday. I'm waiting for someone braver than I to crack one open to see if there is more to it than just a magnetic read head and male headphone jack. It would be neat if we discover a microcontroller flashed with a code that pairs each device specifically to the users account. But really I'm hoping it's just a simple set of components so that I could easily fabricate a new one if mine gets lost/broken.

So I received the card reader, but I haven't been successful with using it up to this point. I have a Galaxy S Vibrant, and when I follow the instructions for swiping credit cards absolutely nothing happens in the square app. Has anyone accepted payments successfully with the card reader, and if so what are you doing differently?
EDIT: Sorry about posting on this in Nexus One section. Although I'm not currently testing on a Nexus One the problem I'm having is hopefully more related to the application or OS than it is the hardware, and this is the only discussion related to Squareup on this forum.

Try testing the card reader using an audio recording app like garfnodie did. If you don't get some kind of whooshing sound on your recording, then there's a chance you've got a bad reader. But if you do get sound, then I'd say it is a hardware compatibility issue with your Galaxy.
BTW, do you get the card reader icon pop up in Square when you plug/unplug your reader?
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/7183/readeryes.png
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/6443/readerno.png
I wasn't getting that icon in my initial tests, but I am now that I pull the card reader out of the phone just a little. There is a certain point where I leave it that the icon stays solid and the app appears like it is ready to accept a swipe, but swiping the card does not start the authorizing process. Most degrees of pulling the card reader out of this phone only results in the icon disappearing or it constantly appearing then quickly disappearing.
I tested my card reader on a Droid X today and it worked fine, so I'm assuming this issue is most likely related to using the card reader on a Samsung Vibrant. I am running a custom ROM (Bionix 1.6 at the moment) which may have an impact on audio jack functionality, but I'm not sure. I'll need to try other ROMs and see if the audio jack behavior is any different.
I've found that using a normal headset in the same way that I described with the card reader behaves identically. The app shows the icon but in either case I'm unable to successfully swipe a card.
EDIT: I've also found that the Samsung Vibrant does video out via the 3.5mm audio jack. I'm leaning towards this being the cause as to why the card reader doesn't work with this new audio jack. Here is more information:
http://www.wirefly.com/learn/wireless_news/confirmed-samsung-vibrant-tv-out-menu/
If I toggle video out on, then I can't get the Square application to see anything plugged in. If I keep video out toggled off, then I get the level of functionality described above. If it turns out that this is the reason for the issue, then I hope it can be solved via a software update on either the Android or Square side (rather than a hardware issue). I've opened a ticket with Squareup with all this information.

I never even noticed that the card reader uses four conductors until I read your post about your problem and took a closer look at my card reader. A standard headphone jack uses three conductors(left, right, ground), most cell phone jacks use four conductors(left, right, mic, ground). Now if the Captivate can switch that fourth conductor from mic in to video out when needed, then it certainly sounds like a software issue, just don't know whos problem it and to fix.
Someone else posted in the Vibrant forums saying they have had success in getting the card reader to work while using a specific ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806795
So this means it may not be a hardware problem with the card reader or the Vibrant, and that the software issue may be on the OS side and fixable via changes to whatever ROM being used. I haven't done the testing yet due to time, but I will hopefully today. The updates to this issue will be in the linked thread above going forward since it seems to be isolated to the Vibrant and we now have a Square discussion in that appropriate forum.
this actually looks awesome. I guess it converts what it reads into audio that the program can pick up. What the hell is the usage though?

I haven't received my unit yet, but has anyone had any issues with it? I've looked into it and supposedly it's capped to $100 per transaction and I think your capped on the number of times you can use it per day.
Also I heard the reader may take multiple swipes before the software actually picks up on it.
I don't think the cap will be a big issue for me, but I would trust the opinions of the people here more then random bashes on the internet.
Would be neat if you are a Craigslist whore. Not only would you be able to take credit/check cards, but you'd also get a receipt of the transaction as well.

Water damage

Soooo I'm in a super jam. Got water on my device.....had it in rice overnight....powered on fine...can see water damage behind screen but the touch screen works....my loudspeaker is shorted out, puts out super low volume. My WiFi works and my Bluetooth works but no cell service. I found the replacement speaker online for like $10 so that's fine....how do I go about repairing the cell radio? I didn't see that part anywhere. Is it part of a larger module?
Any insight is super helpful. Thanks guys!

Before you do anything drastic, I'd verify its the not the sim card destroyed. I wet my device once and two days later all was fine except no reception and it turned out to be the sim card was corroded. You can also try cleaning the damaged sim card in alcohol but that's a last resort method.
I put the Sim card in my nexus 7 and it registered on network. Couldn't load any webpages or videos but it showed me as having "H full bars"

It could still be the card at that point. I would still get a new one because you would need it either way. Worst case you paid 10$ for something you're going to need anyway. (If the damage was that deep it no doubt must have hit the sim card) its better to explore the cheapest option right off the bat before going in to repairs that mess with the inside of the phone.
Well I need to replace the speaker anyway

So I'm actually posting from the damaged device. Turned it on today and the speaker is working. My WiFi is working as well as my GPS module. Camera and flash are both working. I guess I need to just try a new Sim card. There is definitely water marks behind the screen..anyone have any ideas on how to clear that up?

I actually just now had signal for a few seconds. No data but had bars. I intermittently have the display changing from "no service" to "emergency calls only"
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Anyone have any thoughts as to what would cause the intermittent signal? Is it a sim reader failure? and antenna failure? Something that can be repaired?
My USB connectivity came back!!! Can go through all my files and adb connectivity is functional. Anyone know if there is a diagnostic that I can run to find out what parts have failed? I'd like to just have to replace my antenna if that's all I need

ok well it was not completely sumberged.
the antenna cable is a separate module in the device
If everything else is working perfectly it would be very hard for me( a EE trained person) to assume that the motherboard is "fried"
im not even suggesting that something "went weird". LOL i am suggesting that possibly the antenna got water damage while the rest of the device survived. I am curious whether there is a diagnostic software that will let me know what hardware pieces are damaged. As it is right now i dont have a multimeter or i could just open the sucker up and resistance check everything LMAO
The radios toast. Just because everything else works doesn't mean the radio survived. Had the same issues with my wifes phone. She gave it a tea bath. I took it apart, cleaned it with electrical cleaner, dried it in rice for three days. Put it back together and everything worked great. Except the radio. Sold it for parts and moved on.

NFC not working with Android 5.0

Hey guys, I recently flashed the factory Lollipop image from my Nexus 5 (LRX210) and everything was running great.
Not soon after I set up my Tap & Pay, I realized that I couldn't complete my purchases. I thought maybe it was my Wallet app, or something was wrong with the priority of the wallet app, but that wasn't that case.
I tried beaming content via NFC to many other androids, but it was like my NFC card was dead. I didn't get any feedback from other devices, and even when I scanned a NFC tag it didn't react.
My NFC card was working fine before I went to 5.0, does anyone else have this problem? Really hoping I can get some info about it.
Thanks.

I was just reading up on it. Before I upgraded I opened up the back cover to show my friend the internals, then I snapped the cover back on (without pushing the back cover). A week past, then I updated to Lollipop. Another week has past since I upgraded and I just now realized the NFC wasn't working. I got my friend to let me use his wireless charger, and it worked fine. I also tried pushing the back in to hear that extra snap, but nothing has seemed to work.
Edit: I also flashed the factory image for KitKat, and NFC still does not work.
Perhaps I should be more detailed when I say "not working." The NFC does indeed recognize NFC tags and other enabled devices, however it does not vibrate like it should, or work like it should. I have many NFC tags that I bought and were working just fine. I tried them out 1 by 1 with my Nexus, and every time I scanned 1, a white screen would flash for a very brief moment, as if it was a windows opening and then closing before the animation finished. I used the NFC Tools app, and it recognizes the tags, but it can't read, write, lock, or do anything to them. I downloaded an app called NFCSniffer, and I get feedback from tags as well. But it seems as though my NFC chip is not working correctly ever since I opened the back. I'm really confused about this whole situation and wish I hadn't even opened the thing.

Weird. In all the cases I know of, the NFC chip is either completely dead or just not connected properly. Try opening it up and putting it together again. If that doesn't help then I guess you'll have to replace the chip.

How to pay with gear S3 MST?

Hello,
I set up my gear s3 classic. Set up my Samsung pay on my axon 7 everything works up until the point I tried to pay with my watch. Selected my credit card and placed my watch near the magnetic reader and it didn't work for me. Tried it at Costco, target and teavana. Confused at why this isn't working. The instructions look so simple. Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
You need to put it right where the card reader is located. I have noticed that it doesn't seem to work as well as the phone's MST does but it does work. Some readers don't work where I live either, Lowe's for example, but the majority of other places works just fine.
Does it happen instantly or it takes a few seconds for the terminal to register?
Works pretty much 99.9% of the time... you get better with practice...been using it on the S7 Edge for months
It can take a few seconds, and that's probably why they have it broadcast for 30 seconds as opposed to the phone only doing it for 15. I hold mine as close to the reader as possible and wait until the card reader responds.
Just tried it again and it didn't work getting frustrated as it should be easy from the videos
Once you put it into pay mode hold it right next to the swipe slot on most swipe pads, some pads actually have a touch spot. You should feel your watch vibrating and you can usually hear a beep from the pad when it recognizes the watch. When I use my debit card loaded on Samsung Pay, I sometimes get cued to put in my PIN and other times it just processes.
I have been in my local grocery store. It worked at the Starbucks inside the store, it worked at the self checkout, it did not work at the regular lane with a cashier. So, it is not always going to work in every store, or even at every type of checkout area.
Also sometimes the Samsung Pay app recognizes that I used Samsung Pay and it shows in my history. Sometimes Samsung Pay works, but I get no indication in my history that it worked. I have had about a 90% success rate with it working at different retailers.
keep trying with no luck my watch keeps counting down but no payment is made, could i have a faulty unit? or maybe i am not doing it right. should i be moving the watch by the terminal like i am swiping it? I did pay using nfc today which was pretty cool.
still no luck. timer counts down with no payment. feel like an idiot standing there.
How many places have you attempted to pay via MST? My go-to is MST since most card readers don't have NFC where I live. I know that when I start Samsung Pay that if I put it up to my ear I can hear it making noise internally. Try starting the app and telling it to pay and put it up to your ear to see if it makes noise, if it does then I would attempt the MST payment elsewhere.
Just tried it and I just hear the watch vibrating.
Attempt it at a different place and see if it happens to work. I have about 3 places locally to where I live that it doesn't work at all, and the rest work flawlessly. Also, try holding the watch face directly towards the middle of the swiper. Some places like gas pumps don't actually look for a card at all times and require a physical card inserted for it to start looking for the magnetic data. Could be possible in your situation.
I have an S3 classic - it worked when I first bought the watch - then for some odd reason, it stopped working. I can prove this because my wife's S3 Frontier works flawlessly RIGHT AFTER my 30 seconds of standing there with my S3 classic against the card reader stripe no matter far or near, up or down, it fails and I look like a complete idiot' but her s3 frontier just works instantly.
BUT if i got to a place that supports NFC payment, i can use the Gear S3 classic instantly and it works flawlessly - just the MST doesn't work.

Question Samsung Pay and Google Pay issues

I got a new Watch 4 LTE from TMobile and I did get Google Pay set up on it, and it works, with limitations. It appears that when I tip my wrist back to place the watch near the reader, the screen shuts off and apparently, this may be preventing the NFC from working. If I contort myself the opposite direction so the screen doesn't shut off, Google pay works fine, but it's uncomfortable and just looks weird. As for Samsung Pay, I had it set up on my old watch and I told it I would be moving it to the new watch. This apparently requires an update of the watch app on the Watch 4, which consistently fails. I had a similar issue on my old watch and turning off WiFi on my phone seemed to fix it, but that's not the case here. Anyone have ideas? Can I sideload the Samsung Pay watch app through wireless ADB?

Well... I tried Google pay at another shop and it worked fine when the screen turned off... So I'm down to Samsung Pay. Honestly, I don't have to have it with GPay working right now, but it's gonna bug the heck outta me not being able to update it.
Are your phones rooted?

No. I used to root every phone I had long ago, but I stopped doing that when I started using Google Pay and Samsung Pay. These days, I don't find a lot of reason to root anyway.

Yeah I have the same issue with Google Pay. When I move my wrist to place it close to the card reader, a clock appears on top of the screen and prevents Google Pay from doing anything.. Really annoying.
I saw other people complaining about this as well on Reddit. Don't know what the solution is for now as I have already turned off the wrist gesture in the settings.
Hello, I tell you that I was able to make NFC payments work with the BBVA GO Apk in Argentina, I comment on why I think that in Latin America, it saved Chile, Brazil and Mexico, there is no application to use NFC Pay. If anyone is interested I can show them how I did. I cannot create a new thread as I am not reaching the level. Best regards Miguel.
