Looking to flash a new kernel. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I rooted my phone with the quick root tool from noxious Nina. I want to flash a new kernel so overclocking is capable. can I just install and run the vzw ez unlock from the play store or do I have to completely flash a new Rom and all on my phone? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

The EZ unlock tool works great!!! Just make sure you flash the correct kernel.... AOSP kernel for AOSP base ROMs and a stock/touchwiz kernel for stock/touchwiz ROMs. Most of the ROMs floating around have a kernel built in specific to that ROM. Happy flashing and make a nandroid before anything!!!!

I have everything backed up with TB. do you know of a good stable stock Rom kernel that can be overclocked.

Synergy is stable and good. I have been running that since the beginning. I am gonna jump to ParanoidAndroid this weekend since most of the bugs have been worked out. You can search around for the most compatible OC apps and methods. I normally leave things be unless I need to change them.

Ok soooooooooooo I have another question. I'm looking at flashing clean kernel. I want to use vzw ez recovery. Has any one done just a kernel with this app and how did you do it. Just select your image and click flash or reboot recovery. I have done research on this but I have yet to find a solid answer on how to do it.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I normally just reboot to CWM and flash away.... I don't use EZ for anything other than choosing recovery and unlocking the bootloader. If you're not on a custom ROM you can use EZ to boot into recovery after flashing the recovery of your choice.

So if I use ez and flash into COM 6.0 then I can go into download mode with vol up home and power then just boot to any Rom that way?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I don't know if it still applies but you aren't supposed to flash kernels with ez recovery.. I did that once and got stuck in a boot loop. That should be used for recoveries only. Use that to flash cwm and go to where you downloaded your kernel..most likely your download folder and flash it. But as stated before make sure your kernel applies to your ROMs tw=tw aosp = aosp no crossing. I personally still use cwm 6 although that was a recovery for kexec methods..it can still be used...for flashing ROMs make sure you know if you have to wipe data and cache as well. You can get into some nasty boot loops and bricks if you don't. I personally do a nandroid and then wipe everhthing then flash a new ROM...just a force of habit. I hope this helps..hit the thanks button if this helps you at all.

Also to add to your question..you flash ROMs from cwm recovery. Download mode is used for Odin to flash stock ROMs and stock rooted ROMs. To boot into cwm from an off state its power volume up and home at the same time. From there back up using the backup option and once that is complete wipe data/wipe cache then go to install zip from SD card or ext SD card wherever you downloaded the new rom and flash that and don't panic if your phone doesn't boot up right away (hanging at the boot animation screen) the first boot always takes the longest.

sounds like it's connecting fine.. and you described it right, flash the stock rom in Odin first and boot up to make sure it works or do some minor set-up, then flash the latest 8/17 CWM in Odin and immediately boot into it after, make the backup then flash whatever rom/kernel you want (Gummy 2.0 has one included and will enable voodoo lagfix on first boot)
not that hard once you do it once or twice and kinda learn how it all works and whatnot
do you. mind shooting me a download. link. of stock rom and cwm what about kernals do I need to. flash a kernal or is. that included in stock. rom as well as gummy charged

and no the stock rom does not include a custom voodoo kernel but the Gummy 2.0 package does so it will install the kernel and rom and enable voodoo lagfix on first boot (the Gummy rom package includes version 2.2.5 of that kernel I linked so it's a bit old, you can update it if you want by flashing the new one in CWM afterwards)

you don't really need to format the sd card as everything android related (not phone #'s or pictures or anything *you* put on there) will be wiped when you do the wipes in CWM

no no no stock rom in PDA first, boot up after the flash, power down and connect to Odin again and put CWM in PDA (everything goes in PDA) and flash then unplug phone after it passes and immediately boot into CWM no regular boot up.. then wipe data, dalvik (under advanced) and cache then flash Gummy or rom of your choice (custom rom build must match stock build like stock EP1W with EP1W Gummy 2.0), select reboot phone option and let the kernel activate voodoo lagfix when it boots up (may take a while)... once it starts you'll have a rooted voodoo custom rom, then you can hold the power button down until the reboot options menu comes up and select recovery to proceed to flash the updated kernel if you want
also the modems will be the ones installed with the stock rom, but you can flash new ones in Odin in the PDA section if you want

I'm not sure what you mean. You can do a backup of your current state, or you can flash a new rom from via zip file
If you have recovery your good to go. I do recommend doing a backup before you flash anything though just in case something goes wrong.

OK..you are rooted and now have recovery CMW 6.0.1.0 which you flashed with ez recovery (all you need to do with that app, you are done with it). At this point just pick a rom that you want...example SynergyROM. All you would do is download the rom and place it on your SD card...I would recommend the extSDCard.
Boot your device into recovery by holding the buttons to do it or just open EZ recovery and hit button 'boot recovery' option only. Find the zip on ext card and that is it...
Always do a backup first which you can do in recovery before flashing the new rom and save that to your ext sdcard also which is an option in 6.0.1.0 after backup then flash new rom
Thank you all for the info

Do we even use Rom Mgr? I think this where I'm making mistakes.
You don't need to use Rom Manager. You have the EZ recovery that flashes a recovery. Rom manager does the exact same thing but EZ recovery makes it simple. Just do what post 3 says and you'll be fine. I just started using EZ recovery 3 days ago and I've already flashed a recovery and a custom kernel. The EZ recovery is only foe flashing recoveries...don't ever try to flash a custom Kernel through it. You can flash custom kernels through CWM Recovery the same way you flash custom rooms, but you need a recovery that supports kexec which would be CWM 6..which is what you have.

I believe EZ recovery allows you to flash a lot of kexec based recoveries, including CMW 6.0.1.0.
I'm curious if using a kexec recovery with CM10 will cause your phone to boot into recovery when you hard reboot, but I'm trying to find out if there's a way to go back to your already flashed CM10 instead of booting the stock ROM.

Edgehood tw ROM help

I have been following the ROM for awhile and tried to flash 1.1 last night. (Now I see 2 is coming so I will wait). My question is I have only flashed beans and aokp. Beans had the aroma install like version 2 of this ROM will have which I simply install from clock work. Do you install 1.1 that way as well or do you flash from Odin? I tried to install from zip using clockwork but it just reboots to stock. Thanks for the help
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Install 1.1 from recovery. NOT Odin. Be sure to wipe data beforehand in cwm or twrp.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Sorry I'm noobish...but used clockwork wiping all cache ect...then installed zip from external card. It says installing update then I reboot. It installs faster than normal. On reboot it just seems so stock. Maybe I'm just retarded and it installed fine. Anyway to tell in settings?

4.3 Roms will not boot

I have flashed many 4.3 Roms and can not get any of them to boot. I have followed all install instructions but can't get past gs3 screen. Any ideas?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
im having a similar problem to yours..i mean after i do a fresh install+gapps it works..but after i go back to recovery and install my other files it wont go past the gs3 logo no idea why.
Yep frustrating any other ROM is OK just 4.3 not working, sucks.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've flashed every 4.3 and all booted. Try just flashing ROM first. Let sit a few minutes then flash gapps. I also use the eclipse ROM gapps for all. No issues.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I also have the same problem when I try to reboot on 4.3 Roms. First boot up is fine. But when I go into to recovery it won't boot back up unless I reflash the ROM from the start. If someone tries flashing ROM and gapps separately let us know if it fixes it.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Tried eclipse ROM and apps. No different. Initial boot works and ROM runs fine but reboot freezes up on gs3 screen. What is getting scrambled and is there a way to fix this.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've never had this issue. What I've done/used to flash all 4.3 roms was use the super wipe tool found in the general section(the one that wipes data, system and caches only) and then run it once and flash Rom+ gapps as instructed. I use twrp as well. Also, perhaps it's a stock 4.3 kernel and maybe flash a kernel straight after you flash the rom and gapps. Rom> gapps>kernel . Hope it helps

Use ez recovery to flash the ROM or install cwm and then flash through that?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I had a similar problem when I first tried 4.2 but I've found two ways that have always worked for me
Full wipe (I wipe everything 3 times, but I'm sure that's overkill)
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Reboot
If it gets stuck on any screen wipe the cache and dalvik cache
Reboot
The other method I've only used with Dirty Unicorns
Full wipe
Flash rom
Reboot
Once the rom reboots, reboot back into recovery
Flash gapps
Reboot
Wait 10 minutes
You can either reboot again or just use as is
But if nothing is working you can odin back to stock
Then use this tool to root, unlock the bootloader, and flash the custom recovery of your choice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825 (it even works on a mac)
(This is what I always use to root, unlock the bootloader, and flash recovery whenever I have to flash back to stock)
After I do that I always reboot and use Rom Manager to flash the latest recovery before flashing anything else.
These 2 roms have been 100% stable for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484256 (4.3.1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469789 (4.3 I've never tried the weeklies just the lastest stable build)
Hope it helps
It seems that most ROMs will boot up fine with the latest TWRP recovery. But there are a few that will only boot up with CWM. So download both recoveries and flash them using ez recovery when one of them isn't working.
So, I usually stick with TWRP 2.6 as my default. The great thing about ez is that it includes cwm in it. First off I'd make sure you're running the latest recovery available. Then if that doesn't work restore your backup, hopefully you made one, and flash cwm and try reflashing the ROM. Assuming you're wiping everything at least 3 times and flashing the correct ROM with the correct gapps, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. And another thing. It's never a good idea to restore data from any app, ever. Trust me, I know.
