Why no non-AOSP roms? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So far we have an excellent WIP on cm10 but nothing yet (that works) on a simple cleaned up non AOSP rom. There have been a few attempts by individuals who do not own the 8013 and they have been unusable.
I thought by now we might have a few from established developers.
Lol and before anyone suggests i just do one myself, unless you want a $500 paperweight you dont want to go there.
Anyone game for a nice cleaned up TW rom?

[Q] Is building a completely TouchWiz-free rom possible?

I'm reading some guides on how to build my own ROM, but in the interim I'm wondering if what I'm looking to do is even possible. I came from a Nexus S 4G and had a completely bare-bones ROM (SlimICS). I want to do something similar, the intent being to completely remove all traces of TouchWiz. I want to know if this is even possible, if it's been done, and if not I want to know what the issues are. Also, links to any sort of guides are greatly appreciated.
I highly doubt u will accomplish what u seek by reading some from making guides. Most of the current ones are for gingerbread and not ics. We will not have a touchwizz free rom (otherwise known as also) for quite sometime. That being said our current devs have done a great job of themeing over it and replacing most things. Sky ics 4.2D-6 and NexusMOD are good examples.
You need to go here and read this thread they are building ics aosp.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586198
Honestly no . Its almost impossible.
Impossible no but it will take a massive amount of knowledge gotta say our boys have been doing a top notch job for having basically nothing I think the project will have better chances once kernel source drops for ics

? about aosp ROM's

First of all I'm on Verizon.
I've always used tw roms on my s3 but have been considering trying out a aosp rom and an needing help selecting one.
When reviewing that particular section it seems that carbon is the most popular of the options.
I'm wanting to know the benefits of aosp over tw based roms. One thing I have noticed is that I'm thinking that the Swype feature to either call or message while in you contact list doesn't work on aosp. That's a bummer to me because that's one of if not my favorite features of tw.
Is aosp faster than tw? Is it snappier because of the file size being smaller?
When I had my fascinate I normally ran aosp because, well, that's for the most part all there was to offer once 4.0 came out.
What is in your opinion on the best aosp or aokp rom and why? What should I stay away from?
I appreciate any and all help you guys have to offer.
I look forward to your guy's suggestions.
Thanks and have a great weekend.

I don't think you're going to find much better performance, I believe that most folks go with AOSP simply because they prefer the look and feel. Personally I thought the TW menus were ugly and childish. There are a number of AOSP roms to chose from, if you're new to it then I'd recommend CM10/CM10.1. Make sure to read all of the instructions/documentation first, there are some known issues with certain ROMs and that may turn you off. And of course do a IMEI and nandroid backup first!

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually not big on theming. I guess I've just been wanting to venture out but have read in some instances that people are having data and gps as well as imei problems.
I forgot about flashing slim bean awhile ago, but when I did I lost my imei and it freaked me out. I got it backed up on my computer as well as andromizer.
As far as the aosp theming goes,I don't like the blue at all but have seen some really nice themes on here and some really sharp themes on Google play.
Thanks again and hope more people chime in.
I really really really hope team glitch gets on board at some point. If those dudes start making kernels for this device I'll be sold instantly. That team knows what's up!

Very Disappointed in Cyaonogenmod

Been using Cyanogenmod for a week now. Very dissapointed in the fact that my bluetooth audio sounds like AM radio. Also I get extremely bad echo during calls. Tried CM10 and 10.1. Both have the bluetooh issues.
Sure its a little bit faster. But, I rooted and installed a custom rom in hopes to IMPROVE me phone experience and I got just to opposite.
I'm considering going back to the rooted stock rom but I can't seem to find the link to the original latest verizon rooted rom. I didn't make a backup. Can anybody help me locating it?
On another note, I'm willing to try another custom rom if someone can vouch for it and ensure that there are no major bugs like CM10.
Should've bought an iPhone o_o but really the developers spend there personal time making these roms not for money but for us and themselves so if you're "disappointed" in them then make your own or try others, read threads and find out bugs before you flash.

Don't use bluetooth so can really comment about it, however there are some great touchwiz roms in the Android Development section I stay away from the Original Android Development just because I have found too many issues.
As for some suggestions Synergy is pretty cutting edge though you may have to play with voltages if you install ziggy's kernal. Clean rom is another nice option. Hyperdrive and Delta have also run solid for me. Currently running Beans 12 and it is almost everything I can ask for, if a 5x6 launcher were included it would be perfection for me.
I would say to install twrp as your recovery, if you haven't done so, and install a rom and run it for a few days and see how it handles. Make a backup, twrp lets you rename them so you can easily restore to your favorite rom, and install something else for a few days. Also you may want to try different kernels as well, KT runs good for me but there are many more to choose from.
Finally just remember that each user runs different apps and has different needs and that while we all hqve the same phone minor variatikns n hardaware and just the way the rom flashes can have different effects such as bluetooth audio interferance or poor battery life or app abc will not work for one person but another has none of tjese problems.
Good luck and just remember that the perfect rom is out there waiting for you. You just need to flash like a madman until you find it.
Check out mastamoon's CM 10.1 rom. His latest 2-28 rom is near perfect. BT audio sounds great, signal handoff isn't as good as TW, but it's good enough as a daily driver. I've had little problems with it, to the point i don't even notice it. Try that and your mind will change.

A. If you have issues with a ROM either post in the ROMs thread or in the Q&A section. Not start a thread in General bashing a ROM developers spent countless hours on. Just a respect thing.
B. Go to original development look for yourself, see what has features you like.
At this point, my phone is just one big tweak.
I'm sorry you're getting echo in calls and problems with BT. Would probably be solvable if you had asked since echo has been fixed for a long time.

responses are laughable
I think its funny, this guy has a valid complaint about how CM 10 is making his Bluetooth sound bad, and weather it's true or not, members just bash the $hit out of him, lol.
To the OP, if you don't like the ROM or something is glitchy, I've done two things in the past when I've experienced this.
1. make a backup (I use my backup root), and then boot into recovery, wipe (cache, davlik, system, and Format), then reflash your ROM.. OR
2. Find a new ROM and try that out. Currently I'm running the latest CleanRom with Morphology 1.5, and Ac!d audio..I have no issues with sound or bluetooth.
I hope that helps man, good luck and remember. Keep Calm and Flash Roms.
There are at least two threads where a total noob can seek help to fix the two issues he has, and one more where he can read how to fix his issues. Perhaps there are better ways to address his concerns?

To the OP I say I hope you find a solution to your problem. Keep flashing and find what you need brother. To everyone else I am pretty new to this particular medium (xda forums) but looking at almost every topic I've seen I gather one very singular feeling. Please xda take away the "post new topic" option. Its pretty obvious that every single question that can possibly be asked has already been answered. So why ask any question. They are apparently evil and the world wide web has only limited space so lets please not clog it by asking a question twice *gasp*. There is a section for every device and build for developers only that by all means should be kept as streamlined and clutter free as possible but in general forum questions should not be so vehemently discouraged.

I am also disappointed in the CM rom's performance...but I think the blame (for my issues, at least) resides totally with Samsung.
The rom itself works great, but when you're in the middle of a town and everyone else in the restaurant has 4g and you've only got 1x (not even 3g)...well...that's an issue.
Wish they would release the friggin RIL so I could just stick with a 4.2 rom. Grrrr!
S3 Radio
I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not. I recently had to return my phone to stock because my phone needed to be re provisioned to activate it again. This happens when you flash multiple roms apparently. I got my phone working and commenced to do everything to flash back to CM 10.1. I noticed I can make calls however, my 3g data will not come up. So, I have flashed back to stock and everything works fine. Anyone know of a tip that might resolve this issue. I was using the nightly from yesterday.

Me too, my only real issues with CM (or any non-TW ROM) stem from the fact that the radio interface has not been released by Samsung and therefore the reverse-engineered AOSP RIL will probably never be as good as stock. It's not limited to signal strength issues, you also can't take full advantage of the phone's World Phone capabilities with a non-Touchwiz ROM. Unfortunately for me, that's a deal-breaker, my phone needs to work as a phone first and foremost and if Touchwiz ROMs have a better and more functional radio, I have to stick with that.
I have been using the latest nightlies of Cm and they have been running great. phone works great except in some areas where I can't get a signal with TW roms either.
I had CM running on my Dinc2. Since getting the S3, I've been running CleanROM with mods. (when I was on CR5.6 I was using KindaCrap Mods and now that I'm on CR 6.0 I"m using Andy Bones' AOSP Theme, which gives it a lot of the feel of CM).

[Q] How to get contants birthdays to show up in local calander WITHOUT syncing

I recently updated to CM10 from a superlight stock rom. I am getting to know JB and one issue I am having is that contacts birthdays will not show up in calender.
I refuse to sync with google and just can't get it to work locally. it worked on the old rom without sycning.
Does anyone know how to fix/workaround this?
Ideally I want a completely local calender/contacts app. I have no need at all to sync anything to google/cloud/internet and refuse to do so.
P.s. While I am posting a thread anyways, does anyone know of a good alternative to the stock samsung/ATT dialer/contacts/phone. I HATE the CM10 apps with a passion and best I have found so far is rocket dialer/DWcontacts and both fall short of the stock apps.
Thanks for any help.

I don't think you can on CM. The only way is to sync. I am not a 100% sure though.
If you desperately want this, install stock based ROM like embryo

I considered a stock based rom but prefer most features of CM over it. Only real catch points are the above mentioned dialer/phone/contacts and that the birthdays don't show up in the calender.
I much prefer some of the security features of CM such as being able to run PDroid. Along with being able to ditch ALL the bloat and build the rom to my specs.
Maybe I should see if this even works in the stock based rom, if not then it is a moot point anyways.

Interesting, I skipped over embryo before due to it being MASSIVE (think it was 650mb) and figured it had to be nothing but full bloat.
Why is it so large? I much prefer lightweight roms that are simple/direct over a bloated rom with tons of things I will never use. Can you cut the size down post install?
Right now I am on CM10 superlight and love the fast boost/lightweight of it.

I see, I will have to give it a shot when I get some time.
Anyone know what the "actual rom" size is with the bloat removed?
Been looking into embryo and got to say it looks interesting. This does bring up another question I have never been able to find a clear cut answer to (messing with my phone is just an as needed hobby of mine).
What exactly can CM do that a stock rom can't? Besides the super compact/clutter free ness of it, what other reasons are there to go with CM over something like embryo from a purely technical standpoint? I could not find a clear cut answer to this when searching, so gave up and decided that CM must be better so gonna make it work.

If that is really it, I actually much prefer the touchwiz interface personally. :good:
My last superlight stock rom severed me very well. Biggest reason I wanted to switch over was for the PDriod/other security options.

Help choosing a ROM.

There's so many Roms here it's hard to choose a place to start. Can I get some suggestions of a good stable ROM that brings improvements over stock as well as everything working like cellular stuff.I just feel like a lot of the Roms seem like they are very similar and I'm not sure what to try. Thanks.

It's all a matter of personal preference.
But, personally, I would suggest BeerGang. It's still technically in the Alpha stage, but I've been running it for the past day and have been completely satisfied. No random reboots, no random FCs, and it has a good deal of features without having too many -- I'm not a fan of ROMs like BeanStalk, CM, etc because there are so many different options to tinker with, and many of them affect the stability and speed of the ROM. The dev (benjamin.j.goodwin) is consistently providing support for it, and I only seeing it getting better.
After BeerGang I'd recommend Purity. I was a long time fan of Purity for all of the same reasons I like BeerGang. Purity is also past the Alpha stage, and offers a little more in features than BeerGang does as of now. It comes built with BusyBox installed (if you're into script optimization,) and is a solid experience for me during my short time using it.

OK thanks a lot I'll check those out. I know everyone says it's up to preference and I agree but with the nexus 5 there are way too many roms to just try them all out lol so it'd be nice to have somewhere to start. So do either of those have the themer app like from cm? Either way I'm gonna try it but just curious. I think I'll try purity first and see if I like it.

I do like the looks of beergang it is on my list to try. If you want aosp style the big one is CM. There are a lot of ROMs that use cm as a base. I like paranoid personally or pacman. If you want something newer try omni it is well written runs almost flawless and has a write up here on xda. It has some unique features as well like double window.

Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile and running Wicked ROM to the Nexus 5. Overall, it's a nice phone, but a few little things I miss are:
WiFi Direct - it's in there on KitKat, but no way to share anything unless you use/purchase separate apps that are incompatible with each other? What gives?
OTG support - I know they want to push "the cloud" on everybody and I knew going in that this phone didn't have microSD support, but planned on using an OTG cable to swap out pics/videos, etc but again this is not usable unless you purchase another app?
I was hoping that for once with a Nexus phone, that I'd be able to avoid the root/Custom ROM/update/repeat cycle, but these missing features are a big disappointment for me.
Anyone know which Custom ROM(s) include the features I mention above, along with good support and stability? Or is this the curse of living on "the bleeding edge?"
I look forward to your suggestions!
