Unroot question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 4.1.1 on my I9020A rooted. Stock Rom and Kernel. I searched the forums and the web, and every article I find gives instructions on going back to 2.3.X, THEN removing root. I don't want to go back, in fact I only want to un-root shortly, then go back to a rooted phone.
So my question is, Can I go through the locking steps of un-rooting, but leave the current ROM (4.1.1) installed?

Delete, IN THIS ORDER:
/system/Superuser.apk
/system/xbin/su
/system/bin/su
Reboot your phone.
Root gone. If you want to root again, go to Androidsu.com, download the appropriate zip file, flash it, and you have root again.

Thanks for the quick reply! Should I additionally go through the fastboot steps of locking the bootloader as well?

No. Unlocked bootloader and root are 2 different things.

What he said. Unless you're returning your phone for warranty repair or you're worried about security (like me), there's no reason to lock your bootloader.

I see. Thank you guys!

I have no Superuser.apk in the System/ folder.
I can only find com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk in data/app/
The other two files you listed I have found.

That's the one. Delete it, it's the app to manage the su rights. su in xbin/bin is the binary for SuperUser

Ok, so I attempted to unroot. I opened es file explorer (Which launched with SU rights) and I was able to delete com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk in data/app/.
Then when I tried to delete su in /xbin, I was denied. Tried deleting su in /bin as same results. Denied.
Any thoughts?

Just flash stock. Now unrooted. To go back flash CWM and SU. This sounds a lot easier if oldblue's suggestion isn't working for you.
Use this for step by step.

You need to delete su binary via adb. Don't believe you can delete it while phone is under Android...

I'm new to android / linux. Been a Windows admin for 15+ years. I thought it not possible to delete SU while using SU, but I figured I'd try anyway. So ADB requires phone in FASTBOOT mode, correct?

[Q] s-off no root

Ok I used bubby's simple one click root I got s-off but my phone didn't take the root any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
check in your app folder if you have super user you are in fact rooted....if for some reason it was not installed go into a terminal emulator and type in "su" and you should get a superuser request and that would confirm you are rooted if it works...
Do you have clockwork recovery?

If you have s-Off then you can try re-flashing the rooted stock PD98IMG.zip from bubby's package. It's extracted into a temp dir on your computer when you run bubbys tool.
I'd guess it gets deleted once you close bubbys tool, as its only extracted temporarily for use by the tool, so you may have to start up the tool to get it to extract it, then find it before closing the tool again.
Once you find that PD98IMG.zip, put it on your SD card and reflash it that way.
Yeah I have superuser but it fc's on me and I have clockwork it's got me stumped maybe I'll try and reroot it again

If you're S-OFF and you've got clockwork, then you're pretty much as rooted as you need to be. Just install a custom ROM of your choice through clockwork. Any of the popular ones from the DEV thread should be properly configured for su, etc.

This problem has been encountered before, I believe. I forget the specifics of the fix, I think it's in bubbys thread somewhere, but it has to do with clearing data/cache for the superuser app and/or redownloading superuser from the market.
Check the thread for the exact details. May even be in the FAQ for bubbys tool (linked in post #1 of that thread).

[Q] How to Root Nexus S 4.0.3 from OTA

I was wondering if someone has found a method to root the latest Nexus S update from the OTA version instead of needing to flash a new rom. I don't feel like resyncing my 3000+ contacts and join the facebook and twitter contacts.
It would really help if i could get root permissions and su working properly by flashing a file or something. Thanks to all that help in advance

STEP 1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1138755 Root it and unlock it
* I strongly suggest you understand what this will do. So check out this guide
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/17/how...msung-nexus-s/
Once you have done this, make a folder in your phone called ROMS ( or anything doesnt matter) download the rom that you will be using, this zip and the SU zip. It will make it easier on you
Sub step 1.5: WIPE CACHE AND WIPE DATA
STEP 3: Flash the 4.0.3 Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1398302
Once you've done this, it will delete the recovery that you got and it will install the stock recovery
STEP 4: Flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1396959
this will make Superuser work allowing you to download ROM Manager and letting you flash recovery from there. Make sure to allow it

Guys, it really isn't difficult or compled. You just have to follow the instructions carefully and do it one stage at a time.
Here is what I have just run through myself after losing root following the OTA update to ICS 4.0.3.
Before anything else you'll need the Android SDK installed so you have access to the adb and fastboot commands on your PC/Mac/Linux. If you haven't done that then you aren't going anywhere further. I already had this installed.
First, gather the two files that you'll need to install on your Nexus S, these are:
Superuser from here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396959
and
Recovery from here --> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Ne...de#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery_Image
Copy the file on to the Nexus S in a suitable directory or root, it doesn't matter, you'll be using it later.
Then, and only then, you should follow the instructions on the Wiki page to install the recovery.zip to your Nexus S
Boot the Nexus S into recovery and choose install zip from sdcard.
Select the Superuser.zip file (it may be a longer filename) and press go, it will install Superuser
Reboot back into Android and load up a suitable file manager (I use root explorer).
Navigate to /etc and rename the file installrecovery.sh to something else (I just appended .old to the filename)
Reboot back into bootloader and repeat the flash recovery recovery.img
Thats it, your'e done. Rooted and with Recovery permanent on the Nexus S.
Caveat: If any of the above doesn't mean very much to you then STOP right now. Get someone you know to help you or you'll likely end up with a brick.

Well I tried this but something happened that I was not prepared for. I have the OTA 4.0.3 update installed and I actually flashed it with the stock recovery that already came with my Nexus S. Surprisenly, now, I can't boot to recovery. I press the power button and the phone reboots, then quickly a "dead" droid appears with a red attention sign on his belly and the phone goes black and I need to get the battery off. It does not boot into recovery, it does not respond, its simply black. What the hell should I do? Please help I'm new to the NS, just bought it this week
EDIT: Everything else is working fine. Just cant access my recovery

[Q] Preserve Root Through Factory Reset

Hey does anyone know if OTA rootkeeper can preserve root through a facory reset? I want to downgrade to .30, root, upgrade to JB, then factory reset. I know it will preserve through OTA, but i want to know if it is possible to preserve root through full reset, with OTA rootkeeper or any other methods.

Yes, it should keep root after you did a factory reset. Make sure you download and installed superSU, once download open up superuser and and superSU. In supersu put a check for preserve root in settings(if you have the paid version), if you don't open up superuser and put a check to preserve root. Then Open up OTA root keeper, make sure you save root by click "Temp unroot". Now turn off your device and boot into "wipe data" execute it. Once your device boot up, re download superuser, open it, then download and install OTA root keeper, open up then click restore. You should have root back.
Have you tried? Did it work?

I have tried this 3 times while I'm on JB, then one more time with factory reset 3 times consecutively and I still able to preserve root. Then again, still there are some odds out there, nothing is 100% with tf700.

Hey all,
been trying to get help on this in other threads as well but not som much luck.
1- From ICS 9.4.5.30 I rooted using DebugFS, which installed superuser
2- Then installed RootKeeper, click on Protect Root, then click on Temp Un-Root
3- Upgraded to JB 10.4.4.16 through SD card
4- Open RootKeeper but no Restore button is there.
I have unlocked bootloaders and no wipe data anywhere in this process.
Will installing SuperSU before upgrading to JB change anything at all? What am I doing wrong?

After you rooted, make sure you open superuser, then dowload superSU, open the app also, then download the OTA root keeper then click protect root,(all the boxes should have a check), click on Temp Un-Rood, now do the upgrade.(you must update through OTA or use incremental dlpkgfile to update, a full package will wipe everything).

Since you already unlock it's a shame that you're not runing custom rom. If you already on JB, you can do it this way, download Android sdk to your computer and install it. During the install process, you need to pick the package to install, pick 2 packages that named with android. The sDK is installed in this directory on your computer,c:\android-sdk\platform-tools, in this directory theire is a command called fastboot.exe. Download recovery image file from here http://www.mediafire.com/?ju5p2p9adpuus2k and put this file "recovery.img" to the same folder as fastboot.exe (c:\android-sdk\platform-tools), Now let begin:
1. connect your device to your PC with usb cable
2. boot your device into fastboot mode (select the USB icon)
3. On your pc open cmd (command prompt) and navigate to this directory; c:\android-sdk\platform-tools
4 type :
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery recovery.img
once done type
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
That's it. You should install sdk because it's a very useful tool, and since you already unlocked, it such as waist if you not runing custom rom. You are going to fall back in love with your device when you're running custom rom. Go for it bro.

Do you even restoring to factory data I am able to replace the root with Rootkeeper?
I'm not sure what you did that's different from me, but I used Voodoo Rootkeeper and worked fine. I don't have SuperSU installed.
I'm thinking you didn't save your root properly when you went to protect root.

SuperSU is the latest and all developers are going to use this app going forward. SuperSU is more reliable. Superuser is old and will slowly phase out.

No, tampered just means /system partition was modified, most likely due to su being present in /system/xbin
Now that su is there, do you have a superuser app, such as SuperSU? If not, download it from the market and run the program to update your su binary and get configured. As for the LTE, I don't know

Thanks! Yes I do, I installed root checker just to double check and I indeed have root access. Now onto flashing a custom ROM. If someone can just give me a nod and let me know I'm heading in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
I'm going to use AOKP JellyBean. I download it, extract the boot.img to my fastboot folder, open up a cmd and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" Can I delete the boot.img from the ROM zip file after I flashed it throught fastboot? This is where Im getting a little confused.

Yes, but you don't have to. It should work as long as you already flashed boot.img from fastboot

[Q] Rooting on a Mac

Hey,
I just did the 2.20 root method posted about a week ago, and I got to the white screen without a problem. I did the htc-dev stuff, and that worked too. I pressed Yes and unlocked my bootloader (or so I thought). I flashed TWRP recovery. However, I couldn't do anything else. My phone runs normally, but I checked and it is not rooted. I realize that the new 2.20 method is a temporary root, and I checked in its thread, and was pointed to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426. That isn't for Mac, and I wasn't able to find any way to root a 2.20 HOX, install SU, install a ROM, etc.
I installed a rom and all that on my old phone, a Motorola Atrix, without too many problems, so I'm not completely illiterate. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

no, because i don't know how to do it. should i flash it using fastboot (while the phone is in white screen)? if so, what file do I flash? I got a SU zip, but I'm not sure what to do with it. But I can confirm that I've installed twrp correctly, because I can go to twrp from the white screen by using the volume up/volume down buttons and the power button and going to Recovery.
Thanks for your help

reboot in recovery/twrp. install your su.zip (don't know where you got your su.zip and what it contains whether it has both the su binaries and Superuser apk ). Reboot. if you don't have Superuser apk download it from the market (chainfire version). Voila.

Okay, a couple more questions. Where should I get the su zip? I googled it and found a directory of a bunch of different versions of SU, but it hadnt been updated since like July. Also, what command do I use to install the su.zip?
./fastboot.OSX flash recovery su.zip doesn't work. I'm just now realizing that I should download it to phone memory and install in recovery from there.

You flash the su.zip from inside twrp

1. you told me you had an su.zip !! anyway: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.1.1-arm-signed.zip
2. I said reboot in twrp/recovery (do not flash su.zip in fastboot) and hit the install menu, select the su.zip and swipe to flash
3. go back to main menu and hit reboot and then system
4. download SuperSu.apk from chainfire in the Market
5. open it, it'll probably ask you if you want to update the binaries, go ahead and do so.
You should be good to go.

Yeah, I had it, but I wasn't sure if I had the right one. I did and its all straight now. I was able to install su via twrp and everything worked. I now have root access. One last question (and I realize I've asked a lot of you guys, and I do really appreciate all your help), do I need to take any special steps or precautions when installing custom roms? On my atrix I just saved them to memory and then installed via cwm
