check in your app folder if you have super user you are in fact rooted....if for some reason it was not installed go into a terminal emulator and type in "su" and you should get a superuser request and that would confirm you are rooted if it works...
Do you have clockwork recovery?

If you have s-Off then you can try re-flashing the rooted stock PD98IMG.zip from bubby's package. It's extracted into a temp dir on your computer when you run bubbys tool.
I'd guess it gets deleted once you close bubbys tool, as its only extracted temporarily for use by the tool, so you may have to start up the tool to get it to extract it, then find it before closing the tool again.
Once you find that PD98IMG.zip, put it on your SD card and reflash it that way.
Yeah I have superuser but it fc's on me and I have clockwork it's got me stumped maybe I'll try and reroot it again

If you're S-OFF and you've got clockwork, then you're pretty much as rooted as you need to be. Just install a custom ROM of your choice through clockwork. Any of the popular ones from the DEV thread should be properly configured for su, etc.

This problem has been encountered before, I believe. I forget the specifics of the fix, I think it's in bubbys thread somewhere, but it has to do with clearing data/cache for the superuser app and/or redownloading superuser from the market.
Check the thread for the exact details. May even be in the FAQ for bubbys tool (linked in post #1 of that thread).

Hi i s-offed my DS today without any problems.
But when i tried to install gingerbread1.20.apk to gain root the DS didnt recognazied the file.
Anyone kniw what to do?
I used gingersnap since gingerbreak failed for me on Desire S.
Try download it from some other mirror or try SuperOneClick. I have done it with GingerBreak, it says it failed but i have root now.
I also had success with GingerBreak. It's on the market btw.

What exactly did you do? You need t be more specific.
Download the file to your SD. With a file explorer, install the .apk, then run the installed.apk. Is this similar to what you did?

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I have a Desire S with hboot 2.00.002 unrooted. I was hoping to perform a full backup of all apps (system included) before I attempt to downgrade my hboot to root and s-off.
Is it possible to temproot using tacoroot and then run Titanium to perform a full backup? I have tried, however each time I run Titanium it says that the phone is not rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Sam

you tried it before? well, maybe it wont work. just full root your DS
Thanks for the reply.
From what I understand I cant full root without downgrading my hboot version from 2.00.002 to .98, and in order to downgrade I will need to flash RUU which will cause me to lose my data. In order to prevent me from losing my data, I wanted to backup before attempting a full root.
Please correct me if you do not agree with the above.
Cheers,
Sam
You can't run Titanium under shell temp-root, because Titanium doesn't run in the shell. You need "real" temp-root, something that will install Superuser app and su binary in /system and set correct permissions - even if both will be gone upon reboot. If you can't do it manually - you can probably achieve by SuperOneClick.

Thanks for the response.
I tried using SuperOneClick and it didnt work. Looks like I need to unlock my bootloader first and I dont think I can do that without wiping my data.
Any other ideas?
Cheers,
S
If you could actually achieve temp-root by any method - you could do it manually. Nothing complicated.
You could try to use ZergRush. Just go over the available rooting tools known to work on Gingerbread, it'll save you the time to wait for responses.
You can use ADB to back things up.
See this thread for a nice tool for doing it:

Hi Sam,
It may be too late for you if you've already downgraded your hboot, but it could be useful for others. It is indeed possible to perform a full backup with only a temproot. I tried to explain in detail how here.
Simply said, one of the directories where titanium backup looks for the su binary is /data/bin. As this directory is not write protected with a S-ON hboot, you can install the su binary there once temprooted. The trick is to remount /data without the nosuid option in order to be able to become root when executing /data/bin/su. It appears that zergRush remounts /data without the nosuid option. For other exploits, it may be necessary to remount it yourself once the root access is granted.

I'm running 4.1.1 on my I9020A rooted. Stock Rom and Kernel. I searched the forums and the web, and every article I find gives instructions on going back to 2.3.X, THEN removing root. I don't want to go back, in fact I only want to un-root shortly, then go back to a rooted phone.
So my question is, Can I go through the locking steps of un-rooting, but leave the current ROM (4.1.1) installed?

Delete, IN THIS ORDER:
/system/Superuser.apk
/system/xbin/su
/system/bin/su
Reboot your phone.
Root gone. If you want to root again, go to Androidsu.com, download the appropriate zip file, flash it, and you have root again.

I can only find com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk in data/app/

That's the one. Delete it, it's the app to manage the su rights. su in xbin/bin is the binary for SuperUser
Ok, so I attempted to unroot. I opened es file explorer (Which launched with SU rights) and I was able to delete com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk in data/app/.
Then when I tried to delete su in /xbin, I was denied. Tried deleting su in /bin as same results. Denied.
Any thoughts?
Just flash stock. Now unrooted. To go back flash CWM and SU. This sounds a lot easier if oldblue's suggestion isn't working for you.
Use this for step by step.

Hey,
I just did the 2.20 root method posted about a week ago, and I got to the white screen without a problem. I did the htc-dev stuff, and that worked too. I pressed Yes and unlocked my bootloader (or so I thought). I flashed TWRP recovery. However, I couldn't do anything else. My phone runs normally, but I checked and it is not rooted. I realize that the new 2.20 method is a temporary root, and I checked in its thread, and was pointed to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426. That isn't for Mac, and I wasn't able to find any way to root a 2.20 HOX, install SU, install a ROM, etc.
I installed a rom and all that on my old phone, a Motorola Atrix, without too many problems, so I'm not completely illiterate. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

no, because i don't know how to do it. should i flash it using fastboot (while the phone is in white screen)? if so, what file do I flash? I got a SU zip, but I'm not sure what to do with it. But I can confirm that I've installed twrp correctly, because I can go to twrp from the white screen by using the volume up/volume down buttons and the power button and going to Recovery.

Okay, a couple more questions. Where should I get the su zip? I googled it and found a directory of a bunch of different versions of SU, but it hadnt been updated since like July. Also, what command do I use to install the su.zip?
./fastboot.OSX flash recovery su.zip doesn't work. I'm just now realizing that I should download it to phone memory and install in recovery from there.

1. you told me you had an su.zip !! anyway: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.1.1-arm-signed.zip
2. I said reboot in twrp/recovery (do not flash su.zip in fastboot) and hit the install menu, select the su.zip and swipe to flash
3. go back to main menu and hit reboot and then system
4. download SuperSu.apk from chainfire in the Market
5. open it, it'll probably ask you if you want to update the binaries, go ahead and do so.
You should be good to go.

So for some reason my N5 just randomly lost root access. Cannot run TB or any other apps with root permissions. I went through the process of unlocking boot and gaining root and it had been working for a couple of days and then just stopped. I know that I can go back to stock and go back through the unlocking process, but was just wondering if there is a way to just get root without having to set everything back up again, but if I have too I do have a nandroid in CWM. Also don't know for sure but I did see that Google's factory image for the N5 is build KRT16M where my phone states I have KRT16O. Not sure if there may have been an OTA that I didn't see, but I'm pretty confident there wasn't of course if so that would explain the issue. Any help greatly appreciated. Also my phone is still working fine just no root access thanks.

Another thing to look out for is some of the su flashable zips create /system/etc/install-recovery.sh which has a line in it to call the su binary at boot.
However since install-recover.sh is used to install recovery, cwm detects this and states "this rom could reflash recovery. Fix?" And if you select yes to fix, it removes install-recovery.sh which stops root permissions being applied at boot
