Help me figure this out, would ya? What can I use? - General Questions and Answers

Hey,
Needing a little help/advice here.
I've been trying for 3 hours to make something work, but have failed. lol
I'm trying to find some kind of music buttons / widgets / toggles that allow me to change their icons.
This is my problem~

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I almost got 1x1 power toggles to work,(first pic)
but they have a blotchy ugliness around them when on the lighter background, even being transparent.
They are sitting over my current "built in icons" just as a test, but it's no good.
The second shot is what Im going for, but I cant figure out what to use to make it happen.
I just need a "Play, Forward, and reverse" button to control my music, but I need to be able to make their icons transparent.
Anyone know of anything I can use to accomplish this?
I couldnt think of anywhere else to ask, So Im posting here.
Figured if anyone knew, it would be someone here.
Sorry if I wasnt clear enough, Ill try to elaborate if needed.
Hopefully this gets some replies! lol
I appreciate any help or insight.
Thanks.

Well if you wanted you could change the icons themselves in the apk.

Is that wallpaper, have you tried using gimp to make an icon http://www.gimp.org/ if not edit the wallpaper and use a clear icon. Even use uccw

Thanks man,
But this app is "Power toggles".
and I don't think I could do that without messing up the whole app.
Plus, it's a little beyond me to do that anyway.

All the icons you see on there (minus the power toggles) are icons i put right on the wallpaper using GIMP.
They all have clear icons over them, but I cant do that with this. Not with this app anyway.
and the other apps I find with "music buttons" dont allow me to change icons either. :/
The first wall is my current one with the power toggles over top, but the 2nd is the one i just edited to do this, but now I cant do it. lol :/
Thanks for reply.

So you want just clear icons for the widget? You could drag and drop the pngs with 7zip easily or decompile if you know how. I could do it for you when I have the time.

Yeah, but that's the thing..
The widget even gives me the choice to choose an invisible icon for it, as well as allowing me to make the background of the widget totally transparent, Yet it still gives me the funky blotchiness with both the invisible icon and transparent background.
Just to make it easier to understand/visualize..
This is how it is normally~
with just one toggle~
Transparent BG~
Transparent icon~
Transparent icon and background~
and even with both transparent BG and icon, (icon not transparent here, but the result is the same)
It still looks like this~
So, after seeing all that, You still think you could actually go in and tweak it to make it look proper?
It would be awesome if so!
but honestly, Im feeling skeptical about it. lol :/
and I can't just long press on it to change the icon like with regular apps.
So Im lost.
and I cant find any other apps/widgets that would let me do something similar.
Thanks man. <3

Hey sn1per..
You got me thinking..
Maybe what you were talking about could be done with this, instead?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.mediabuttons&hl=en
This would work well for what I need if only I could change those big ugly buttons to my own invisible icon.
What do ya think? lol <3

Good news!
I found something that works exactly as I need it to!
It's called "Media Keys"..

Very cool, thanks for the replies guys! I appreciate. <3

Works perfectly to.
Nice and quick acting "buttons", working flawlessly with my PowerAmp.

Cool find. You can also use Widgetsoid for this in the future, though the only issue would be alignment depending on how your screen is setup. BTW, did you just use the option within the shortcut setup to make the icons invisible?

Thanks man. Was super happy to find that. lol
Cool, I will install widgetsoid for future use, Looks good.
I made them invisible just like changing any other app icon,
Long press> Replace > Navigate to invisible icon and choose/set it. Then renamed them to be blank/unnamed the same way, Long press > rename
(well, im using go launcher, not sure if it works the same with others)

[MOD] Remove Text From Home Screen and/or App Drawer Icons (Rosie) - Fresh 2.1.2

It has been referenced that there are alternative home launchers (ADW) that enable you to remove the text underneath the icons on your home screens. The question was posed as to whether or not the same could be done with our stock Rosie, and via a few strategic edits, it can.
Attached is a MetaMorph that you can use to apply to your existing Rosie.apk, that will remove the text from the icons on the homescreen, while retaining any previous edits done to your Rosie launcher. It does not currently recoup the space that the text previously occupied, however, it does allow for a "cleaner" look.

THM MetaMorph Control File <--- Apply using any older MetaMorph Application
Note: When modifying Rosie.apk, any of your existing widgets on all of your screens will likely get reset and need to be re-added.

EDIT: Worked great on my Eris, just didnt remove text on Widgets. Does it on the Hero? Or not meant to remove widget text?

The Launchers (Helix, ADW, LauncherPro) don't do it on the Widgets either. If it can be done though I'm sure JsChiSurf can do it. /endofasskissing

Funny you ask, but you might want to pucker up .
In trying to figure out the mod posted, I actually accidentally did exactly what you are asking, but didn't think there would be much use for it, since there are a lot more apps in the drawer, and it may be difficult remembering what they are without the text.
i would also like it with out txt in the app drawer. But I'm using Darchdroid with AWD Launcher. Will it work?

Okay, the first post has been modified to include another MetaMorph for removing the text from the app drawer icons. It is separate / independent of the home screen mod. I personally think it is a little confusing / difficult to easily figure out what is what, but to each his own!

Modified it to fit my theme figured I would share it
This looks great. I would love to use it but I don't know much about Metamorph. I have read some of the links that explains what it is,how to use it, and You-tube links where the creators explain stuff and still feel unsure as what to do exactly. My brain really doesn't work well reading stuff, I am more the kind that has to watch and see somebody do it to really get it.
Is there an idiot guide for metamorphing out there? Or somebody willing to walk me through it? The good thing is that when I learn it I don't have to ask again...

Being an end user of MM, it is really as simple as downloading the free app from the market, dropping the download link in the OP onto your SD card (in the AndroidThemes folder preferably), and applying with the MM application.

Sounds simple enough. Will give it a shot later.
Thanks.
To JsChiSurf:
I've applied two of your mods successfully (I'm a big fan). I have been using your "Vanilla Lockscreen WITHOUT Sprint/Time/Date text" and your "Remove 'End Call' Soft Key While Call is in Progress & Vibrate on Connect" for a while.
However, yesturday I applied 3 more of your mods: the "Remove Battery & Clock from Taskbar", the "Remove Text From Home Screen (Rosie)" and your "Android 2.0 Style Vanilla Rotary Lockscreen Clear Version" and I'm now having problems.
8-10 times today without warning, my phone completely shuts down. I go to check my phone or make a call, and as I attempt to clear the lock screen to get to home I find the whole dang phone has turned itself off. I attempt press the 'on' button -- doesn't work, requiring me to pull the battery to reboot (which then works fine). Big problem, as I have missed several work calls. I even put the phone on the charger, and returned later to find it had shut off. Battery temp and life are completely fine.
I ask, not to offend you, but only to ask if you have heard of this happening with any of your mods? I have nandroid'ed back to pre-mod and I am still having this happen. I had no problems prior to the 3 new mods yesturday. Do you maybe have any suggestions?
All the mods were applied successfully and I was very, very happy with their appearance and your awesome work. Could any of these mods maybe be incompatible with each other? Incompatible with Flips 2.1 version 1 ROM?

[MOD] Semi-Transparent App Drawer / Shortcuts Background

This is another change I ended up with by accident, when working on the text-less icons for the app drawer. This is based off of Fresh 2.1.2, but should work with any Sprint based 2.1 ROM.
I originally discarded it, but thought it might be cool to, in addition to changing the color of the app drawer & add shortcuts background from solid black to some other color (gray in this mod), to also make the background semi-transparent, so that your wallpaper shows through, and this is the end product.

I like it because it is different - what Roms will it run on?
This should work on most Sprint-based ROMs.
It is really starting to grow on me. Here's an example using a photo type wallpaper background where you get a better sense for the "transparent factor".
It is something, I think, that looks better in real-life, as opposed to screen captures. I'll probably post a MetaMorph tomorrow.

It's right under your nose. Check the link in my sig, lol.
First post has been updated with MetaMorph control files for applying this change.
It has really grown on me and I am liking it very much. It is not too dissimilar to the semi-transparent notification menu we've grown accustomed to. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.
As mentioned above, I think it looks really nice when you have a photo style wallpaper.
Added this Mod!!! I have been looking for a transparent app background for a while. You also went the extra distance and did the same thing to the shortcuts background. Just wanted to say thank you for this and it worked for fresh 2.0d. The only thing that I had to do is re-add all the widgets on my screen after the update. Thanks man keep the updates coming!

this is the white version with a little photoshop editing you should pretty easily be able to get a PSD template to use to make your own in what ever color you want. If you truly dont know how to do this let me know and i will make you one real quick to make it easy to do your own
Nice, thank you.
I see they aren't standard android apps tho =(
I'll browse and see what I come up with. I appreciate the link !
**edit**
Yes, any help you can give would be great, I have never made icons and don't have any software for it. I'd like to give it a go tho so I can make some android icons out of these.
I made a quick Photoshop Template. I believe you can open it in GIMP as well (a free image editing software) You should be able to use it to create this effect simply by using the top layer template to make a selecting of the filled in area and then deleting that selection on the icon you want to use. This may seem confusing if you dont have a lot of experience but its pretty simple. I put 2 examples in it as well. Just remember to always save it as a .png if you want it to be an icon and keep the clear background.
If you still have problems PM me and i will try to write out a more in depth tutorial ( i use photoshop personally so I may have to download gimp and play around to get specific)

Would you mind making those 2 for me while I play with this? I'll just use yours in my set and try to figure out how to work gimp with them as well.
Where did it become blurry. I resized the img to 72 x 72 pixels which is the standard icon size so it is possible it looks blurry when blown up but should look fine as an icon on your phone. I will work on those 2 and get you them in a minute

I agree, they look really good on the phone up against the right kind of wallpaper.
I use ADW ex and delete the app name so it only shows the icon, works for me. I'll try to figure out how to make a full set, but this Gimp program is funky for me. =p

[Theme] SteamPunkish theme, initial release. Feedback Requested

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I have spent many a sleepless night working on this and it is a few boredom filled days away from initial release, but far from completion. I am looking for feedback! If you don't like something, tell me and I'll look into it.
This started out being a Steampunk theme, and I think keeps the basics of it, but is not full out Steampunk.
It will be for most roms using the VillainTheme system, not theme chooser. There will not be a battery % displayed in the status bar, just the images as normal.
BEFORE YOU POST, CHECK THE SECOND POST FOR THINGS I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIX / EDIT.

Things I'm trying to fixImage #1
Make the on / off icons bigger. Also some of the on / off buttons are not made yet, I forgot about those
Image #3
The USB stick is colored when you mount your SD card.
Image #4
Same as #1, maybe make the background more see through.
Image #5
Add a background image to the dialer. Probably leather.
Working with Mister Hat to make another dialer.
Image #6

Image 8
This image is to show you the change to the desk clock, I don't like the time bars.
Misc
Also changed a couple of icons. What do you guys think; change them automatically or let you change them using adw or whatever?
Code:
8/23/11 Uploaded initial test release.
Suggestions so far:
Rounded corners on tabs.
Get rid of antique phone icons.
The maindock area reminds me of starcraft
Antique phones
I don't dig the antique phone icons, especially the grey one used in image #5 for the phone tab / dialer.
Also, I think you should make rounded corner tabs instead of black/white gradient.
Looking forward to it.
Yeah I agree, I loved the colorized theme.. this one would be something I'd rock in my late 60's.

It's greyed out because that tab is selected. Also this pic was taken early, it's not b&w gradient, it's all tan. I'll add new photos in the morning.
Also I'll look into the rounded corners. Don't know how to do that yet....

Sweet man! Right now I can't think of anything, but if you are inspired to make anything, standard icons (I don't plan on theming app icons), or whatever. Let me know and I'll throw them in.
Keep up the good work...
I"m also looking into what files draw that button bar at the top of the contacts dialer. I couldn't find it by just looking at the .9.pngs, so next I"ll dig through the xml and find what drawables in calls to make that.
I'm getting the feeling that it may be in framework-res, though...if I find it, I'll share with ya.
It is in framework-res, I can't remember the names off the top of my head, something tab selected and unselected. Thanks man.

It looks like it's the tab_focused .9's in framework...if you change the shape of that, you'd have to know what else uses that drawable.
However, there is tab_pressed_bottom and such, in Contacts that will dictate a colored bar underneath your tabs when one is pressed.
I didnt' have much success changing the shape of the tabs...I mean, I can change the shape of them, but it just didn't look as good as I had hoped.
So what I did instead on mine, was made the tabs transparent...and then layered up the icons how I wanted them to look. That way, I can make the tab look any way I want.
Here's an example. I am toying around with the idea of making a rounded corner red border to each tab, something like what I attached.
I didn't mean to hijack your thread, I'm just hoping to be nearly as helpful to you as you were to me in the past.
It'd be pretty sweet to use this in the dialer.

I'll be watching this one, it looks great!
I can't wait to try it out with Weapon.
Dude soo much information! This is gonna rock when it's complete.

That would be cool. If you want to put those icons together, I'll make it an add on for the theme. I like the buttons I have because of the background I've set up, but I'm not above making other people happy

Notification Bar Widgets in Atrix 2

I bought Atrix 2 today.. but there is no widgets in Notification bar similar to Samsung Touchwiz. They are pretty handy. Anyone knows an app for it??

There are a few versions of this notification bar for the Atrix 2. But you have to be on one of the DEODEXED roms to have them. That means, you also need root and CWM Recovery. If you do - I can share a few status bars with you.
I think there's an app called notification toggle in Google Play
just give it a try.....!!!!

Pretty cool. Two comments.
1. Unless I use a white background there will be a white border on two sides as if this app was not made for our screen size. Anybody else see this?
2. Why does a ROM need to be deodexed to use the toggle zips here? Won't they work on stock odexed?
The End.
This is what I'm talking about...

It would be better if the white screenshot notification wasn't there. Then you would see a small thin line of white along the bottom of the notification app as well as the right side. Make sense?
Here it can be seen more clearly.
The End.

To answer number 2... Notification toggles as well as practically every mod required a deodxed phone because in a odexed phone the information in say BlurCamera.apk is split between BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex This makes it very difficult to find a a specific file you might be looking for (epescially for theming) because it can be anywhere between the two. In a deodexed ROM BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex is combined, so all the files are in one place and easy to find.

Yup. That damn SystemUI.odex....
You can only edit existing images, xml files - minor theming stuff - in the odexed apks. To edit the smali files (which is needed for heavier mods, like adding the dropdown toggles, power menu options, etc..) you need to deodex...
I have been running on an odexed rom for a while now, and it's quite a bit faster loading and booting.. I managed to tweak it pretty well while leaving it odexed, but I gotta get my pulldown toggles back... still working on that..

Thanks. I'd be very interested in what you've managed to accomplish tweak-wise on a stock odexed ROM. I'm sure others would too. Start a new thread?

One more named Widgetsoid2.x is quite good, you may have a try~

Thanks. I do prefer this over the other notification app talked about earlier here. However, it suffers from the same strange 'not fitting' issue. I'm not able to use a black background without the border issue appearing. White background works quite well. It also has more options. The app is a bit buggy and I'd definitely recommend watching the video tutorial. Once setup with what works and what doesn't the app is satisfying enough. Thanks for your post. This is a good alternative to pulldown notifications on the stock odexed ROM.
The End.

I use this too, for now.. but it's not convenient to have to tap it twice since the notification in the pulldown are not really toggles, you gotta tap that to get the popup then tap the action that you want. That's why i just keep them on my home page..

Nice. Do you have that weird spacing issue when used on the notification screen or is it just me?

Yup...
I think it's because they are not individual toggles, more like just a picture of the toggles as a place holder, and that pic is probably not sized for our phone (just a guess)... or, maybe it's for a scroll bar? can you put a few rows in the notification and scroll? (again, just a guess, I haven't played with this app enough yet)
My guess is its an absolute value in the XML instead of a percentage or floating value. Probably designed without the ATRIX 2's dimensions in mind.
The End.
