My First Rooted Phone !! YMMV :) - HTC Desire S

I only rooted my phone a couple of weeks ago (waited until my guarantee expired) then after getting totally fed up of the HTC stock experience I flashed ROMS in the following order
1. Lowveld's Reaper v3 -
Stable and OK speed, based on CM7 (I did not understand the OverClock stuff at that time) but I prefer HTC Sense
2. Lowveld's Fallout Evolution v4.4 -
Nice with HTC Sense but not quicker than stock for me
3. Nik's Project X - Very fast, beautiful eye candy but 2 critical (for me) bugs
dialer delays so much so that at times I literally had to wait 1 minute before the number I dialled would work
Camcorder no sound
4. Eclipse_Droid's ICE Eclipse v2 -
Very fast but I missed some of the tweaks and eye candy I had in Project X
5. Ronks888's ICE DS v 4.4 - As fast as the above with extra status bar and eye candy tweaks (similar to Project X) and Overclocked Kernel 3 !! !!
Hope this was useful

so in ur opinion "Ronks888's ICE DS v 4.4" is the best Custom ROM for the HTC Desire S atm?

In my opinion ICE DS v4.4 is stable and fast with enough features to be getting on with as your day to day use phone. Fallout is just as stable for example but "I" did not find it as quick as the others.
There are other ROMs with even more features but I found this ROM has a nice balance. If Nik's ROM didn't have the dialer and camcorder problems I would still be using his!

i think the best is yet to come, now that we have the official ICS. ICE DS would probably change it's base to it because it still depends on incredible s' base which is the reason for few bugs.

We will see. For example Nik's new Transformer ROM will be decent. The only question is will you be able to use it as a day to day ROM or just a show ROM. I personally need a day to day ROM.

6. MIUI- fast and pretty but took a couple of reboots before working properly then my alarm program simply would not work with it
7. Ronks888 ICE DSv 4.4 with stock Kernel. I had issues with the sweep2wipe which I think was killing my batttery?

9. Fallout Evolution v5 by Low. Very nice ROM from the master but just like with MIUI I have too many issues like apps not working and tweaks going missing. Also with default settings it is still not as quick and smooth as ICE-DS. YMMV.
10 See 8.

have you tried blindndumb's BlindICE? i used to have it and would like to know how other ICS roms compare to it, especially in terms of smoothness. that was the only bad thing i found about it.
i'm now using jellytime but it's not completely stable and i don't know if i can accept going back to less smooth versions.

I'm still using my first custom rom Fallout Evolution v5 and its very stable and usable which is very important for me.
I've not plucked up the courage to try another rom yet but I have made a nandroid back up ready for when I take the plunge
I'm still trying to decide if I need to flash a re-engineered hboot 2.00 as I used revolutionary to gain s-off.(6.98) It wasn't a requirement for my current rom as the developer fixed it, I need to read up a bit more I think.

Depends on the ROM. I think I needed to do upgrade my hboot to 7.0 when I installed MIUI (cant remember now, so many roms).
But the nice thing about Nandroid is that it makes it all so easy.
1.Set up the rom how you like it
2.Use it for a day or two to make sure everything is ok
3.Back up the rom using 4EXT or ROM Manager booting to Recovery mode (Nandroid)
3a. You may also use a separate back up program like my backup root to back up the apps and their data so that you can import them into the new ROM later.
4. READ THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NEW ROM AS GIVEN BY THE DEV
5.Do a full wipe (except SD card)
6.Install new ROM
7.Have fun

Hi again
I know the theory but I have rebooted on many occasions and sweep2wake is still disabled.?!?

I always support ICE DS \m/ . but after battery and heat leak on ICE DS 5.0 , i tried latest fallout 5.0. For now, it's working like a charm. no battery leak.

Which Official Sense 3 ROM is best so far!

As the title suggests, i would like people to share their thoughts and opinions on which sense 3 release built from the new OTA is the best!

most stable?
least/no bugs?
best battery life?
best for daily use?
how does it compare to voidu?
At the moment we have the following releases:
Hyperion ROM V1.0|Sense 3.0|GB 2.3.5][mod UNITY kernel |OC|FFC]
Desire S Official Sense 3.0 - [GRJ90] [2.3.5] OTA 2.10.401.4
Pre-Rooted Saga S HTC Europe 2.10.401.4 odexed/deodexed (GB 2.3.5/Sense 3.0)
Have fun!
EDIT:Sorry, Ignore the Pyramid3D entry in the poll. My mistake!!
VoidU!
I'm afraid that I'm biased and vote for VoidU! Why isn't that included? (I know I know "official") but, it's still sense 3.0 and certainly the slickest, most configurable, bug free ROM that I've come across and certainly remaining my daily driver, until I'm convinced otherwise! (you have to hand it to the RC Mix3d team - with VoidU they have a finished product whereas most of the above ROMS are in the first days, so can only improve - so the future is bright!).
So I'm very keen to watch the results of this poll and also glad to see a sudden influx of recent Sense v3.0 ROM competition.
I even heard a rumour than a new LBC ROM Sense v3.0 ROM may be making an appearance in the future (please don't ask him for ETA's though!).
Hi ben, thanks for your input!
Voidu isn't based on the official release as u say but i will include it in the poll as per your request... the only problem is i can't find a way to edit my poll now?

yer..I know through my own personally frustrating head scratching experience that adding a poll to a first post isn't possible once you've created it (we'll unless you're a moderator) so it might be the same for amending an existing one! Never mind!

Hi i want to go to this rom. i am currently running lbc 0.6.0 with unity v4 kernal. can i just flash this rom as usual or do i need to do some other stuff first. I've already bricked one ds and had htc replace it as they couldn't fix it so a bit nervous about what i can and can't do. Any help would be appreciated.
VoidU is based on a DHD Leak, so it's pretty official. It's the best IMO.
Remove Pyramid3D, as it's not official. It's based on Sensation.
Tried quite a few different ones but I always come back to VR - Virtuous Unity v2.39.0 just works.
Would love to patch in Beats Audio!

Which ICS rom is best???

Looking to get a few opinions from ppl that flash multiple roms to their devices. Looking for something that is stable, not overclocked, and has the least amount of reported issues. Thanks in advance!!
i am currently using insertcoin 4.6.1 and it is very stable and fast also without overclocking it
Android Revolution HD is great, very fast, very stable and I've had no issues so far.
The Android Revolution HD ICS is a really good ROM. I just recently flashed it and love it. It's fast and stable. I performed the benchmark test with the ROM and came up around 2900-3000 compared to the previous 1900s.
I will second Insertcoin. The only issue is the inbuilt WiFi tether being broken, but I believe that is an issue with ALL current ICS roms. Barnacle works wonders.
Flashing Android revolution as we speak.. I thought it was supposed to give an option to select 1.2 or 1.5?
InsertCoin and ARHD are both extremely popular options. My suggestion is to try them both and see which one works best for you. Give each one a few days to get the kinks worked out and always make sure you do a full backup and Super Wipe every time you change ROMs!

I had the same thoughts as you when I was using Clockwork Mod to flash roms, it never asked anything about the install. Now, I use Touch Recovery and I have yess/no options when I flash roms now
Its really difficult to find a fully compatible ROM for your phone, as what happen to mine tried the popular one which i got a lot of issues some people not, so I tried other. Every ROM's claiming fast/stable. To be fair you can to try each for yourself which I did and happy with what i have now. Different people have thier own choices depends on what their need. Go out and explore there now 44+ ROMS you can narrow down which is more popular and depends on their feedbacks. Goodluck.
If you would like to try non-sense I recommend miui v4 or either CM9 kang. I've had zero issues with either.

ENERGY ROM is very stable, fast, and also lightly themed...... overall an extremely smooth ICS ROM...give it a try....you wont regret
blackICE is the best from all aspects
bigpercaso has created a ROM which is the best by performance stability and on top of all the ROM is themed so beauty ................

But super cid is not needed.
No issues so far and hotspot works perfectly.
insertcoin rom is the best for me
I've been running Android Revolution HD 5.3 since January. This was my first experience with a non-stock android device as I bought the device configured in that way. I was very happy with it, but couldn't get HTC Sync to transfer my contacts and found it a little laggy, other then that it was great. The best advice I was given to fix my issue was to reload/update the ROM. Mike actually uploaded his latest version 6.4.0 while I was downloading 6.3.1 so I scrapped that and went with 6.4.0 since it was based on the Final HTC RUU 3.32.401.3.
Its only been a day so its not much of a test, but so far its way better and faster then the old ROM even when it was fresh. HTC sync worked flawlessly. the response time is as close to instant as you can get. You need to use 4ext recovery to have the option to use the 1.5Ghz kernel or load the Sony Bravia engine. I chose both options and have seen no issues, only improvements.
Like everyone said its really your taste so try out a few varieties, just remember to superwipe between them else you might find bugs that aren't really an issue with the ROM but because you didn't clear all the old data.
All the best and have fun.

'Sweep2Wake' does indeed consume a lot of juice, want to see how MIUI v4 battery lasts without that feature.

HaxSync compatibility...
Have one suggestion. Since HaxSync does a pretty good job of syncing high def contact pictures and linking them with phone contacts - works beautifully on AOSP and AOKP ICS ROMs - can you manage do the same with MIUI. If this is manageable it would be excellent since MIUI has one of the best call screens around.

[Q] removing the root and all the mods on a second hand htc desire s

Hi, i bought this phone on second hand and it came with the cianogen mod 9, and its full of bugs , and i need to send and receive mms, one thing i cant do with this rom...
How can i put the phone like it came out of the box? With the oficial htc rom, or a new one that doesnt have bugs and is able to send mms...
I appreciate the help! a link to a tutorial or something like that would be great!
I think your best bet would be installing endymion. A fast and stable custom ROM. If your comfortable with returning your phone to stock then that's fine but since the phone is already rooted it would be easier and probably safer to install a custom ROM
Endymion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310845
Sent from my Desire S using Tapatalk 2
sounds like a good idea, that rom is the most stable out there with sense 3.5?
Can you please give me a link for flashing roms on this phone, i did it a long time ago on a galaxy 550 i had but i dont remember most of it... One more thing, will the phone run the 2 roms multibooting like a pc or will the flashing of this rom erase the cyanogen one?
Thanks!
No, the phone will not run 2 ROM's.
If you require a backup of your current ROM, go into recovery & make a nandroid backup of your current ROM.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
You need to erase system , boot, data, cache, dalvik cache partitions before installing a new ROM (Endymion in your case).
Refer the INDEX thread for all your querries regarding Root, Installing new ROM , or Return to stock Guides !
While I haven't been on Sense in a while, I am confident Endymion is the most stable. It's the only Gingerbread ROM managing to stay on top of the development section. The developer has put in a lot of work into this ROM.
For the rest Tapur007 is pretty much correct. All your answers can be found here:

Luckily for you the hard part has already been done. All you need to do is boot into recovery, make a backup, wipe and install the ROM.
And to backup things like the apps what do you recommend? Something like titanium backup?

Titanium Backup is your bet for backup of applications and their data. Although you need to be careful restoring across different ROMs.
You could try the latest ICS ROM called Fallout (what I consider to be the Endymion replacement as its made by the same guy) this is reaching a level of performance and stability.

I've alredy flashed the endymion rom, it was easier than i tough, using the rom manager, it praticaly does everything for us, including wiping data and installing (sorry for the entusiasm but i tough it would be harder so i was pretty happy )

yep, thanks for the help everyone any recomendations on roms to use?
If you're already on endymion, give ICS a try. So fallout or virtuous saga. Or if you don't like sense try out reaper for a stable and fast gingerbread experience or AOKP for an ICS approach.
There will never be one answer to the best ROM. It's up to you to find out which one fits your standards

Sense 2.1 ROMs: none (time to move on from the 80s...)
Sense 3.0 ROMs: none (time to move on the 90s...)
Sense 3.5 ROMs: Endymion 3.5 (great support! great dev!)
Sense 3.6 ROMs: none (why use an inferior ICS version when clearly Sense 4.0 is just around the horizon...)
Sense 4.0 ROMs: lots to choose from (most still have minor bugs that needs ironing out, but Sense 4 will give you the HTC One experience...)
Again it goes to show that HTC only cares on tempting you to buy a new phone (with new software) rather than providing proper support for old phones... Great thanks for the devs who keep old phones alive that htc has left to die...
non-sense Gingerbread: Oxygen port (some issue with camera on some newer phones) or CM7 (latest CM7 RC3?)
non-sense ICS: CM9 latest alpha (a clear upgrade, only minor glitches now), AOKP port etc.
These ROMs are the way Android should have been released (like the Nexus S / GalaxyNexus) without HTC butchering it up with Sense.

Get the latest alpha (31/5?) This should solve most of your mms problems.

[Q] Is there any 100% stable Rom available for Desire S?

Is there any 100% stable rom available for Desire S? Ive been searching for it and found so many out there but everyone is complaining about every rom out there, complaining about wifi or camera or restarting issues are these roms meant to be unstable or they are supposed to be like stock one? can anyone please tell or guide regarding ICS or Jelly Bean rom i can get without getting in trouble as ive never ported my phone before, thanks!
There is nothing in the whole wide world nobody is complaining about.
To topic: there are roms that are way better than stock. Most people having issues don't know what they are doing.
I've used most roms and most stable 3 are cm7 ,virtuous unity and fallout

Fully stable ROMs that I've used and liked are:
Gingerbread (Android 2.3):
Endymion
Reaper
Cyanogenmod 7
Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)
ICE_DS 4.3 (fully working!)
Fallout (not 100%, missing wifi tethering, but every single other thing works).
Hope this helps!
you mentioned ICE_DS 4.3 (fully working!) can you send me the link from where i can get the guide and download it? I've stock 2.3.5 on my Desire S with Sense 3.0, thanks!
i found this is this right:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the following stable ROMs?:
Cyanogenmod 7
Endymion
Fallout
Reaper
Virtuous Unity
Alternatively, where can I find a straight forward comparison of them?

try it yourself.
Don't let other ppl's preference determine what suites you, if I ever did that then i would be stucked at rom A, and i wouldnt even bother to try rom B.
Even though i read that there were many issue with rom C i still tried it out, and the issues they mention didn't appear in my phone. So my current rom is now rom D.
So then rom B had an update, so i back-up my current rom then restore rom B then updated it. I didnt like it so i went on to try rom E which was one of the lattest developement.
Take ur time to try it all, because once u tried everything u will get bored as i am now and just waiting for the lastest update to come.

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to changing ROMs.
I know that CyanogenMod 7 comes with integrated OpenVPN and WiFi tethering if I recall correctly. I consider these two features as quite desirable. I assume that Endymion and Reaper have that too as they are based on CM7, right? Apparently, Reaper is not based on the stable CM 7.2 release but then, on the other hand, it has been advocated as very stable. So, why has the developer then promised a final release?
I'm scared of losing my apps and data when changing ROMs. What ways do you guys use to ensure that your can restore everything to working order after you've flashed your new ROM?

Does the free version of TB suffice?
Any recommendable TB beginners guides out there?
yes, perfectly good enough. You just won't have the batch function. But it's easy to use and has a simple ui. I will say this though, if your going to be flashing roms regularly then it is more than worth paying for the full app, I paid for tb and Rom manager on the day I unlocked my bootloader, and haven't once thought that maybe I shouldn't have

Virtuous Infinity
Virtuous Infinity v1.33.0 Alpha3 looks good with very few bugs and it offers full Sense 4.0 support I will try this tomorrow lets see how it goes, I hope it will turn out good!!

Use HTC stock ROM
Sent from my Desire S
Well, in that case, stock Rom suits best for u. IMHO, the loveliest part of Rom developing is that someone found issues and someone trying to fix it. That's what Android Dev really is. And I enjoy using all kinds of Roms developed by those awesome HTC Saga developers. Every Rom has some bugs, and it doesn't matter if they don't affect your daily use. Enjoy them I'm currently using CM10 by nexx. Rant too much...:banghead:

Another Vote for Ice DS
Version 4.4 + the new tweaked kernel = a big improvement over 4.3.
As a based-on-stock rom I think it' the choice for you.

I don't agree with that.
I had to disable the SIM-code, because every couple of days, my HTC crashed and Restarted.
(if you don't know that, you don't get call's because of the simcard-code).
That was the reason I bought a new smartphone (xperia U).
Since the HTC was in my desk-drawer, I began to experiment with rooting/changing ROM
Now I have fall-out for 2 weeks now, and my phone hasn't crashed 1 time.
So for me, custom ROMS are more stable than the stock one. (and faster, smoother, ...)
It just feels like a whole new phone.
Anybody knows witch ROM is the best for Battery Life ?
It should be ICS and Sense 4.0 ... At the Moment i have the "Project X" installed
Try ice ds...I am getting on an average close to four hours of screen time on a full charge...that's the max I have ever gotten on any Rom ics or gb...
