SGSIII and Bootloader Unlock - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Ok, so I'm pondering the switch to SGSIII and I have a few questions, that as of now, I haven't been able to find answers to...
1) I will be unlocking the bootloader, and my understanding is that flashing an insecure aboot is the most recent technique...is this correct? And does this supercede kexec?
2) Will an ODIN image of my SGSIII allow me to completely restore the phone in such a way that Verizon will never know it's been modified? If not, is this possible...namely, to completely mask what I have done to the phone?
Thanks.

1) Root your phone using this method - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 , then go to the Play Store and DL Titanium Backup just to make sure you're rooted and then DL VZW EZ-Unlock via the Play Store. Run it and hit the unock button and you're all set. It'll take less than 10min to be Rooted and Unlocked
2) IDK about this one as some have said there is a Flash Counter. Not sure how anyone at a Verizon store would be able to tell if it's been flashed or not since most CS techs don't even know what a bootloader is

If it trips the flash counter (dont believe it does) you can use triangle to reset that. In short do whatever you want to the phone. Youll be able to get back to a state where they wont know anything.

Flashing the stock ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1755386 restores the secure bootloader and also removes root so nobody would ever know your phone was modified unless you happened to have tripped the flash counter, in which case you would just use triangle away to reset it.

Thanks guys. This is helpful. I'm making the plunge (I work for Verizon, so I get a demo for free). :victory:

[Q] Rooting Nexus S without unlocking bootloader

I've seen many different rooting methods for the nexus s but unfortunately they don't allow rooting without unlocking the bootloader like the samsung vibrant allows is there anyway I can root my phone without unlocking the bootloader?
why I don't want to unloack the boot loader because I'm fine with the stock ROM on my nexus s. I was really into installing ROMs and things with my Vibrant but the Nexus S feels really complete so I feel like I don't need to unlock my boot loader
Also for the first time I have decent signal in my house after switiching from my blackberry to android so I don't wanna change my baseband and my battery life is good too so I don't want to mess with the kernel
Really? You posted in the same incorrect forum twice with the same question cut and pasted. Nice work!

You know you can re-lock the bootloader with a fastboot command, right? And the little open lock goes away.
i'm sorry i accidentally reposted i pmed the moderator right away because i didn't know how to delete the post and this is the right section its a question...
i just have one question i can relock right but if i do unlock the bootloader will it change my kernel or baseband settings? i really couldn't care about the warranty and such
it's like opening the door....if you do nothing inside, nothing will happen
yes i get that but i can't flash back to the original recovery as of now and so no changes to the kernel and baseband alright thanks!!
also is there some sort of a "ODIN" availabale for nexus s because thats what I used to always flash my samsung vibrant back to stock. will OTA updates be affected if I root and unlock the bootloader?

Yes you can use Odin with Nexus S, but consider it the last resort because normally you can do everything via adb and fastboot -- that's the advantage of having a Google phone.
For OTA updates, I'm pretty sure it will not work because OTA update requires stock recovery but rooting requires you to flash a custom recovery.

restoring the completely stock odin file should relock the bootloader as well.
Thanks!
no it dont lock the bootloader you have to push the stock aboot.img via adb since you cant see your screen, then power off and odin back to stock. on a side note i doubt they will even check to see if your bootloader is unlocked.

That does not re-lock yor bootloader. You have to use ez-unlock to relock it then flash stock image

pull the stock aboot.img from the ez-unlock app with file manager or something equivalent and put it on the root of your sd card. i forget the command to push with adb, but there is some info around here on it. ill check around and see if i can find it.
when you open link click on old info!

Why even restore to stock. Insurance does not care if its rooted and unlocked nor will Samsung if your sending it in for repairs.

Actually I'm pretty sure you will be in "locked" status just from doing Odin with a full factory image. Its exactly how I relock. It flashes the new boot.img and if you use the ez-unlock app afterwards, it shows as locked. Imagine it as still having unlock capabilities with aboot, but still being in locked status. For all intensive purposes, you're locked.
Don't worry about it, your not claiming warranty. In this instance it does not matter at all. Your having the hardware itself being repaired at a cost to you, or your making an insurance claim on a physically damaged device. Either way there is no software related issues that your claiming therefore root is completely irrelevant.
And remember, rooting is not illegal, it just voids your warranty if you screw something up software related.

i thought this at one time but its not true...going back to stock does replace boot.img(kernel), but not the aboot.img(bootloader). you have to lock with the ez-unlock app or push the secure aboot.img via terminal or adb.

[Q] Verizon Update Lost Root

Hi All:
I was having some signal quality issues and Verizon had my apply the newest software update available. I was rooted, but after the update i lost root. It said the update failed, but it also says my phone is up to date. Now when I reboot the phone one of the screens says "Samsung Custom" with a a picture of an un-locked lock (i don't believe it showed that before).
1) Can i go through the process of rooting again without screwing up my phone? Do i need to do anything prior to rooting again if I can root again?
2) What does that screen on the reboot menu mean?
3) Should i bother to do Verizon software updates in the future?
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find a thread in my search. Thanks for your help!
This has been discussed to death, especially in the thread that YOU read to root your phone. You NEVER take an OTA update when rooted. You will most defiantly lose root with the possibility of locking your bootloader and never being able to root again or unlock the bootloader. Since you are this deep, you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. Sit tight and see what is figured out. 2. Odin to a pre-rooted image, restore your backup, and wait to see what the devs say about it.

Well I guess I forgot that little bit of valuable information. So does that reboot screen just mean my bootloader is locked? Also, my backup was deleted somehow during the update process. I tried to go into recovery and load my backup, but it is no longer available.
If you have an unlocked lock, I would thing that would mean unlocked, right? Do you still have your custom recovery?

I have ROM Manager, which i used to access CWM. But if i try to boot into recover from a power off state it says "System Software not authorized by VZW has be found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VZW store for help." At the top of that screen in red it says "Secure Fail: Kernel." So that leads me to believe I don't have a custom recovery anymore, correct?

Follow the steps here to root the new OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. The unlocked lock and custom when you boot up actually does mean that your bootloader has been relocked. Strange way to show it though. You could wait until mrRobinson updates his no wipe odin factory images but that might be a couple days. I always use that method instead.

You don't have to reset anything if you don't want to. You can flash the full wipe or no wipe version. Everybody has their own preferences, I like the no-wipe versions. I usually avoid taking the Verizon OTAs directly by disabling the software update service with Titanium Backup Pro since they screw up root and the bootloader. I wait until there is an ODIN flashable image of it. Others prefer to take the OTA and root using the guide above, or flash the odex or deodex versions in recovery like the ones here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177798.

[Q] Stuck on 4.3

Ok so I never messed around with rooting until my phone got the 4.3 update the other night. I decided I hated the update so much that I did the saferoot method, and I'm now rooted.
Only after I did that did I discover that my bootloader is perma-locked and I can't try to unroot or rollback the android version or I'll hardbrick. I can't do roms. Essentially I can't fix what I rooted in order to fix, and trying to enter recovery mode and odin mode lights me up with a verizon warning. So:
1. Just what can I do SAFELY now that I'm rooted? I've already used titanium to uninstall the verizon apps, but I don't know what I'm doing beyond that to remove bloatware/make this thing faster.
2. Will there be a time in the future when I'll be able to totally unlock my phone and escape Verizon's tyranny even though I took the 4.3 OTA? I want to make it look like stock nexus android.
Thanks for any and all help!
1. That's about it. Maybe use Xposed and the Greenify module to hibernate apps that typically drain your battery. Can't do much more besides remove apps on TW 4.3.
2. Possibly or possibly never. Nobody knows if the Knox Bootloader and extra security checks put forth by Verizon will be overcome.

I use Greenify to hibernate apps I sometimes use and titanium backup to freeze apps I never use. I don't uninstall them just in case. It's running great for me, much better than 4.1.2
I know you can't downgrade from 4.3, but you can't unroot either?

go back to this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 Lots of comments on how to unroot if that is what you want. and give the DEVs some time, there will be a method, there is usually one found after a while. OR stick with what you have for a while, i can make mine look just like my rooted version with little variation, and stock isn't too bad, so far.

No. If you took the 4.3 OTA you are stuck on it. You will hard brick your device if you try to Odin back to 4.1.2. Been mentioned tons of times in numerous threads.

Same situation...I flashed Stock_rooted_4.3 after taking the OTA and my phone said unauthorized software detected, take to Verizon. Luckily I found the original image and it flashed back to totally stock 4.3 build ML1.
Basic root would be fine for now so would you please link me to the method you used if you are also on ML1?

Anyway of resetting custom binary counter on locked bootloader

So I wanted to get a spare S3 back to stock so I could trade it in for an upgrade, so I Odin'd to the official 4.3 with NC1 locked bootloader, but forgot to reset the custom binary counter. Is there any way to reset custom binary counter once you are on a locked bootloader? Any help would be appreciated.
Any thoughts?

There is an option to reset this in Odin when you odin a stock image. And yes do not use triangle away on a locked bootlaoder. It will brick you. Do it in odin!

Its a check box "F. Reset Time" under options.
Just use the vzw repair assistant. It will reset you phone to stock as well as killing off the counter. No need for odin. For the users that just want the custom padlock gone, wanam. Resets the flag to official.

Seeing that he doesn't need to preserve anything his best bet is Odin. The program you mention is unnecessary as it takes much longer and backs up his phone and he does not need to that.

Actually its straight forward, eadier to use, and has a check mark option to back up the phone. Its the same as using odin. I used it with out backing up my phone. Other users reported problems with using odin. Like the process stops. Never happened to me. Also the vzw tool put the phone in download mode. And I have to say for putting your phone back to stock and resetting the flash counter is better then odin.
