I just got an S3 from an upgrade. Should I root it (this isnt my first android phone i know what I will be getting into) with the jelly bean update on the rise? If I do root when the update comes out will it matter if I am rooted/ bootloader unlocked, or will the update just erase all the root.
Back when I had my Droid Bionic it DID matter if we where rooted when an update rolled around.
If is the same old story. If you root, you can customize to your heart's content and have access to new things sooner. However, you void your warranty and can't take OTAs if you root. I wouldn't chance waiting to do it later of you are going to do it, chances are Verizon will close the exploit that is currently used and you may never get the access that you have the opportunity to have right now.

All i used root for on my Bionic was to block ads and acess to more of the phones files. The bootlader was still locked so that is all we could do. On my Droid Eris I changed cpu speeds a ton of files. So I am debating.
Is there a way to get back to stock similar to FXZ?
Root. It adds so much more fun to owning the phone, and the variety in ROM's are great for the S3.
You can root and leave it at that to block ads and use wireless hotspot. Two main reasons I root initially. Then I get bored and go the custom roms route.

Why not? this is an easy decision, root it and play with it, for some reason you don't like it, you can go back to factory stock easily. By the way root will not void warranty, unlock will, but you can alway relock or unroot. So there you have it. It's safe, easy and reverable. Go for it!
If you rooted, you still can take the OTA upgrade no problem, just download and install Voodoo OTA root keeper, save root, take the OTA then restore root (take 1min to do so). Now if you unlock, you won't able to take OTA, however the main reason why you unlocked is you want to run custom rom, so if you are using custom rom then you don't care about OTA. Once the new OTA comes out, you just wait a bit and developers here will create a custom rom for the new release OTA.

jellywiz and it's great! It is completely stock. AND ALL of the apps like media hub work. I tired cm 10 and didn't like it. Battery was about 90% of stock which I think is great.

Thats what I wanted to know, if it is easy to return to stock. Ill root when i get back to my dorms. I forgot my cord and im in class
If for wifi tether alone rooting is always worth it as far as I am concerned. That is one of the best features out there, then again I guess you may be able to do that for free anyway after that fcc thing
I forgot about that is the official google tether apk in the play store yet?
You can delete failbook, that is REASON enough to root.
Google has a tethering apk? Where is it?

I've rooted and unrooted my phone a few times for specific needs, but will not unlock the bootloader until the weird IMEI issue is clearly found (and made avoidable).
So, will just wait for the official JellyBean OTA update.

There're 2 Verizon stock Jelly Bean leaks, I'm running it and so forth pretty smooth. This is pure stock, you're going to lose root if you flash them.

True, but I'm banking on a forthcoming method to obtain root after the OTA hits. Maybe somehow backlevel to a stock ICS build and root from there, etc. Or, maybe I'll never get root back after the OTA hits. Guess we'll see.

I was wondering if there was any benefit to rooting it, but not unlocking the bootloader and installing the custom recovery. I know that I won't be able to install custom roms or kernels. But is there anything else that I'd be losing out on?

The only reason to unlock the bootloader would be to allow you to flash custom ROMs such as Cyanogenmod10, SlimRom, etc. You can do this by downloading EZ-Unlock from the play store. You will need root to run the program.
You will need root access to do anything a "superuser" needs to do, i.e. run programs such as Titanium backup, triangle away, ROM manager, Ez-Unlock, Root access using file explorer programs, and other programs that require root to function. You can flash Custom Recover without root, using ODIN and an ODIN CWM tar with a boot chain. You can then flash superuser/root using custom recovery.
If you don't need CWM Recovery, then you can just root using the PC USB method.

A couple of months ago, I had an Evo that was fully unlocked, with a custom ROM and kernel. For now, I just want to root it, so that I can run things that require root, like Titanium, and some of the other apps that I bought when on the Evo. I rooted and unlocked the Evo because I was tired of it being sluggish. I actually really like the current setup on my GIII. I'm sure that down the road some ways (when I get bored), I'll fully unlock it, to take advantage of other ROMs.
I am still on 4.04. If I just root, will I be able to update to JB with the OTA?

I am stock 4.0.4, but want to root now that JB is out (don't know why I waited guess I just like the idea of doing it before probably the last major OTA). So I plan to root and unlock. Just wondering do I do it now before loading the JB OTA or afterwards? Are there advantages of one over the other? Thanks!

You should be able to receive the OTA update for JB if you check for updates in settings; if not you will receive it soon. Rooting will not speed up that process at all, and since you'll likely be on JB soon there's really no point in rooting right now. OTA will remove root anyway, but there is a rooting method for JB already available.
If you do eventually decide to root, the main advantage is you can unlock bootloader and flash a custom recovery to install one of the many ROMs available for this phone. If you dislike TouchWiz, you can flash an AOSP rom like CM10 which is more of a stock Android experience. If you don't mind TouchWiz, you can install a ROM like CleanROM which gets rid of Verizon's bloat with a few extra perks.
If you're not into installing custom ROMs, you could still take advantage of rooting by freezing unwanted apps which hinder battery life and run other root-only apps like AdFree which block ads. Also, you can avoid waiting for Verizon to push out updates and install the leaks early.
The big reason I rooted was to uninstall all the bloatware and the ability to back everything up. That right there should be enough for anyone. As far as the ota, you should be able to, just expect to lose root as I've seen in other cases.

No point in doing that now because you will likely receive the OTA update within days, which removes root. You could technically install the leaked OTA manually right now (check the dev section), but since you're running stock you'll just receive it automatically. I wouldn't bother.

I already have the JB update available. I am just waiting a while, to see if it causes any unintended problems. Specifically I'm looking to see if it adversely affects battery life or signal strength.
I'm doing the research and seeing what the differences are between rooting and unlocking the GSIII and the Evo. Right now, I'm fine with the stock ROM. It's way better than anything that I had on my Evo (and I tried them all). Right now, I just want to be able to run apps requiring root.

In my experience, it's usually difficult to avoid OTA updates for long if you're not rooted. I would usually go to sleep and find later that my phone updated itself.
I haven't heard of any battery issues with JB, but I don't see why anyone would want to stick with ICS at this point. Google Now alone is worth it.

I don't want to avoid OTA updates. I want it, I just want to wait a few days. I deferred it until 12/19.
I just want to make sure that:
1. I can still get OTAs with root, and...
2. There is a way to keep root if I accept the OTA.
I do want JB, but I've gotten screwed by OTAs in the past, on the Evo. I just want to be as certain as possible.

Yep! Then install and use Rootkeeper.
I just rooted myself before I received OTA for the following reasons:
1) I didn't want to use ODIN
2) Didn't want to worry about using Triangle Away
This was my first time rooting, and it was effortless. I used droidstyle's guide. The only thing I did differently was use a modified Debugfs (w/SuperSU), since my phone didn't like the original Debugfs (w/superuser).

Doesn't the counter only get tripped when you flash a ROM? Just rooting won't trip it, will it?

One more question, and I am off to give it a try. Is there any way to uproot the phone once it is rooted? You know, just in case I need to bring it in for service if something goes wrong with it.

Need some help here... I am a newbie... I had rooted my phone to unlock and use data while traveling in Europe with the below instructions... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 .... worked great!
I installed VRBLK3 (last update) before I received the VRBMF1 OTA update last night which automatically updated my phone. I am faced with error saying Unauthorized Software on phone, goto Verizon.
I am unable to boot into Odin Recovery Mode, but I can boot into Odin mode. I am unable to perform any steps to flash my phone again and then load the latest update manually via Odin.
What am I missing here? Thoughts? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Your bootloader wasn't unlocked correctly and the update sure did mess up it up as it updated while you are rooted.
You can odin it just takes time as soon pull out the battery as soon as you out it in hold power, volume up and home. You should get into odin so you can flash a stock image.

I have the same problem. I haven't run the update, but it has downloaded. Either with buttons or through rommanager, I can't get into recovery mode (I have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed) . I keep deferring the update.
What are the steps to flash a stock image?

Use the ODIN program and then download the stock image from rootzwiki (or here at XDA if its posted)
Plug your phone into the USB port of a computer and then run the ODIN program. Then post the entire .tar package in the PDA section after your phone gets recognized (you'll need to boot into download mode, which is volume down+power+home).

I can get into Odin Download Mode, but I can't get into Odin Recovery (it gives me error in upper left corner ... SECURE FAIL: KERNEL).
When I get into Odin Download Mode and I hook it up to my laptop, it doesn't recognize the device even though I have the drivers loaded on my laptop.
Thoughts?
It should still work. Check the USB drivers in device manager.

I was rooted (stock), took the OTA (a no no but did it anyway) this locked the bootloader and i lost root.
I used this one click to unlock bootloader, gain root AND install TWRP custom recovery and it worked FLAWLESSLY!

what? how is that possible? what were the steps you took? where did things go wrong?
if you can get into odin you should be ok. just flash the stock image and use the one-click method. but be careful i am reading about the one click casual method causing hard bricks on some devices.

I followed everything. started the update, it reset and i got a "system software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest verizon wireless store for help." About to go in and odin now.

I deleted that post. I really still don't understand what went wrong. I have used these apps successfully MANY times in the past.

Just went all the way back to stock. Had to erase everything. Luckily I have most of my stuff on my SD card and my TiBu backup so not all is lost. Sucks I ended up having to do what I didn't want just for an update.

I was rooted, running stock, accepted the ota, lost root but it left the bootloader unlocked.And then the next time I powered up my phone I saw Verizon had given me an unlocked icon and it says custom under it. I originally rooted my phone using that one click casual so now I'm really not sure if I should use it to root again. Any thoughts?

If you want root, then root. Preexisting root tools still work on the latest VRBMF1 ota. You can check if you're still rooted by downloading Root Checker from the store.

Seriously use this tool. Works great!
i updated my verizon Galaxy S3 (I535) today, and forgot to unroot it so expectedly i go the "unsuccessful" update, but it did update, i have the changes. but i cannot get into supersu so i cannot unroot my phone (never really used the rooting anyways)
is there anyway to unroot my phone atm? and/or to make sure i have the entire update?
(wasnt really expecting to get the update at all with a rooted phone)
also i cannot get into supersu cause my phone is still recongnized as 4.3 instead of 4.1.2

Hmm, well you can root using SafeRoot according to multiple users in our general TW 4.3 thread.
Maybe you can unroot after you root using that but there's no way to downgrade or Odin flash a ML1 tar unless we see one published in the near future. If you unroot after rooting then you could probably try installing the TW 4.3 update.zip in recovery but there's no guarantees it'll work and if it messes up, you're SOL until further notice.
Edit: so its clear, you can ONLY root. Flashing roms is not possible or recommended as of this moment if on TW 4.3

Hmm, well you can root using SafeRoot according to multiple users in our general TW 4.3 thread.
Maybe you can unroot after you root using that but there's no way to downgrade or Odin flash a ML1 tar unless we see one published in the near future. If you unroot after rooting then you could probably try installing the TW 4.3 update.zip in recovery but there's no guarantees it'll work and if it messes up, you're SOL until further notice.
Edit: so its clear, you can ONLY root. Flashing roms is not possible or recommended as of this moment if on TW 4.3

ill keep watch, i mean everything seems fine on my phone its just the "unsucessful update" is a bit foreboding given that i obviously have the update o.o
no way to downgrade either atm i take it?
if i could down grade i could unroot easily and then update

Nah, you'll have a hardbricked phone with seemingly no way to fix it if you attempt to downgrade. If/when VRUCML1 stock tar file is posted then you could flash that in Odin. What you'll need is something specifically for TW 4.3 whether that's root, root/unlock, or Odin. Nothing older is compatible.

I believe that by going to the OTA 4.3, you are no longer rooted. The update "unrooted" you.

SafeRoot was a success and I now have a rooted device. I just purchased this used and it did an automatic update when i turned it on. Pretty bummed about now being able to switch out the ROM, but at least I've got root now! saferoot is awesome!

the update database doesnt recongize my phone tho, and thats why it couldnt complete the update.
but according to my phone im still on 4.3 technically
it has been some time, there might already be something out for all i know by now
I am running stock 4.1.2 rooted and froze SDM 1.0 with titanium backup to avoid the constant update reminders.
I am now curious can I accept the updates and keep root somehow?
Is something like OTA root keeper worthwhile?
You can still root but cannot unlock the bootloader. I'd recommend reading the 4.3 sticky thread before taking the ota even if you want to stay stock.

Are you saying that because of the 4.3 issues?
I would rather not mess with the phone but I just got a gear 2 neo and it will not connect. I think this is because of the older android version. The specs on the gear software say it requires 4.2 or higher

Ya you need 4.3.
So you have options, since you're have a galaxy gear you're probably going to be running stock TouchWiz, so I would just take the upgrade.
You can root later, but the gear would never work with aosp anyway. Safestrap can make your phone run pretty well with a TouchWiz custom rom if you eventually decide you want one.
Or you can load a custom TouchWiz 4.3 rom right now and see if it connects, then you wouldn't lock your phone down permanently.

OK then read the sticky threads in the development section, everything there has guides available for rooting and installing roms, then ask more questions if you have them.
Make sure you're reading the older sticky thread, not the 4.3 one.

I've been unable to even get the OTA to work. It downloads then fails on install.
I have reset the flash counter but thought that was all that would be required to repair/delete before running the OTA update.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Just to clarify the phone is currently rooted (casual method) on 4.1.2. I never touched the rom or bootloader after rooting i just installed titanium backup and froze all the bloat. Id like to get the OTA even if i lose root.
I reset the flash counter with triangle away and did a batch unfreeze with titanium backup.The OTA downloads then fails on install.
You would probably need to unfreeze everything for the update to work, at least thats what I have heard.

Use this thread to Odin flash 4.3. It's the exact same as taking the Ota.

I'm sure you already know what taking the update entails, just be absolutely sure it's what you want to do before you flash it. There's no going back.
