[Solved] Flashing roms based on official ics while staying on leak - Motorola Atrix 2

Hey guys..sorry if this que seems silly..i love the current version of the ics leak and i dont want to upgrade to the official version when it comes out (because i have to downgrade and upgrade and so lazy for that)..so can i flash roms based on official release while staying on the current leak??

Ok, before the sharks all jump all over, let me say that you ask a good question. The problem is that you are a bit early in asking, and by the time we actually have an official release, your question will probably already be answered by the devs without anyone having to ask. Believe me, most of us that finally jumped to the ICS leak will be wanting to know the same thing...there's just no way to know now...although I seeing how other issues have been worked out I would be willing to bet my mother-in-law that there will eventually be no problem upgrading from the leak to any other ROM based on an official release.

Yeah you will be good to go if you do not install the OTA. We are also working on a way for those on the leak to still install the OTA, it wont be ready on day one, but soon enough after we should have that worked out too.
As far as custom roms based on the OTA, but staying on the leak, you should not have any issues since it is all ICS.

it's not Friday! anyway, there have already been two other leaks for Gingerbread besides this (though this one went out through KIES and is likely official). this isn't any use for us until sources drop.
then you can at least reorient the kernel and whatnot.
edit: should also add, no development related to this, just a gingerbread announcement therefore general.
So i can flash this through kies? on my captivate?

it shouldn't be which is why I said it belongs in general about 3 posts up.
AndroidCentral is reporting it. (EXCITED)
I'm one of those happy Paragon ROM Cappy users that still loves the phone and is patiently awaiting the SGS2. Gingerbread on here would be nirvana.

I don't believe so but I bet the cooks here will be all over this and Gingerbread ROMs will begin to sprout roots very soon.
well i think this could be a great thing, but ill stick with firefly until an official update comes
one question, why do people even care about official updates? i mean,we update to the new version, then root and start all back over again? lol sigh, but hey i guess thats how xda keeps on a goin...,,,

Well for one I think this means they have to release source in the coming weeks.
They don't have any obligation to do that for a leak...

It is because official updates usually means a stable bugfree version of gingerbread for our devices so that it can be used as a base for custom roms or if it is good enough, use as it is rooted/deodexed.

the major thing this will be able to help with is stuff like GPIO's and whatnot
Well usually the source for the I9000 rom releases always comes out within a reasonable time. So heres hopin we dont have to wait that long before we can grab it and start workin on some reoriented kernels.
Has anybody or will anybody flash this on to their Captivate?
If you have what was it like? And how did it go?
for me Im just sticking with CM7 but still intrigued

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/

Still hasn't been 100% confirmed it's ICS yet. Nobody has finished (that has posted).
And the fact T-Mobile is dropping theirs honestly would have zero effect on ours. It's all up to AT&T and their bloatware adding department. Besides, any drop at this point is very unlikely to be any different than LE2, so it's really not that exciting until opensource gets updated. At that time it will become "RELEASE THE KRAKEN!" (or at least the kernels! lol)

Jumping Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. We have enough "Hey ICS is Here!" threads in the skyrocket forum that turn out to be just another 2.3.6 rollout. Now we're going to have useless threads for other phones based on wrong information regarding official ics?
That T-Mob thread was closed by a mod and moved to the general ICS thread. We really need more of that in this forum. Ugh... smhu
Sorry all. I read some posts saying things like the update . zip contained 4.0.4 files so I thought it might be legit.

[Q] Leak 1 or Official ICS??

This is for those that have ran both. Have you noticed any significant differences in the two, aside from being able to flash back? My wife has been rooted stock GB and hates changes and wondering if I would be better putting her on the first leak or allowing the upgrade. I ran SCV7 before switching to my SGS3 and found no problems with it. Having never used the second leak, would like some feedback from those that may have ran both. Thanks
Bump.....
The second leak(official) is more stable with less bugs. I have gotten better battery life as well.

Well it's not that it's going to be hard it's just that if you run into some trouble you can always fxz your way back but with leak 2 that it's not the option as there is no fxz for ICS as of now.however recently a few people(including me) have been able to recover from a soft brick on leak2.so really it's a matter upto you.you know the risks and the upside.

Totally agree with you. Until there's an FXZ for leak2/official OTA, I'll stay on leak one and flash away. I've already had to use the 2.3.6 FXZ and it worked perfectly.

There's always a benefit of root my friend. First and for most is removing bloarware (AT&T preinstalled apps that take up memory and space in background) So many other reasons why root is best. How I describe it to people is like this. Taking a Governor off a car is similar to rooting an android phone. Technically there is only one ROM made from OTA ICS right now here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960679 but there are others in the development section built of previous ICS "Leaks" we obtained. Such as SCV7, Swifty Trix, CM10, MIUI and a stock based off OTA as well. Hope this helped explain a little. Enjoy the power of the Dark side!

Umm, cm10 is a true opensource rom and not based on any leak/OTA, it is compiled from scratch. The only files taken from ICS are a few libraries and kernel modules and the like, and those have no bearing on version of ICS they were taken from.

Thanks man, you know I'm always willing to test as well. Well, as long as there's no hard brick possibility in the process lol. But with this new fxz back to ICS stock I'm feeling more secure now hahaha. Yes, I would be the perfectionist too if it came to making my own ROM. Probably why I never have attempted yet. Too much work n stress for me to handle. I give you Dev'so credit! Thanks for sharing link man. I'll give it a go n let you know how everything runs. (If I find anything new)

Tester
I am probably not an ideal tester, due to lack of technical knowledge regarding Android, but should you need a tester of the moderate abilities, and knowledge I would be more than willing to be of help if I actually was help. I currently am running the build of CM10 that is currently available, and am impressed with it, but look forward to your build with much anticipation. I can only take off my hat, as it were, to you, and all of the developers in this arena.

Ok if i use this method to root my atrix 2, can i unroot after that?
And i’ve heard that there are problems that is experienced by other atrix 2 users(superuser versions 3.0.3 and above), how do i fix that?
My atrix 2 is running stock ics from the official OTA , before that it was running 2.3.6 unrooted ,stock.
Thanks in advance for clearing my doubts.

No, and no. No on 2nd system because it still uses the same underlying stock ICS kernel.
If you took the OTA, then you are stuck on ICS. This has been the case with major android releases and not being able to go backward for a very long time.
