Im planning to maybe pass on my sensation to my 67-year-old father. It would be his first smartphone as well as first touchscreen one.
The issue is, that my father is not an expert in electronics by far (barely knows how to read and write text messages). His old phones have been plain nokias (yeah the legendary ones) and such. Also his fingers are very thick (about the size of a billiard stick).
Alas what do you think would be the best ROM to suit him?
What im looking for is a simple interface, easy to use, and something that has good batterylife (he often forgets to charge his phone)
Trying out different ROMs isnt that simple to him because if he learns to use one function of a ROM then it will be difficult to adjust to a different ROM that functions differently.
So what do you suggest?

How about virtuous inquisition,? It is senseless, stable, excellent battery life, no frills, Rom. I personally think that would be a excellent choice for seniors. He won't have any problems with it. Hope this helps. I know if I gave my mom a Rom , I likely would choose this for her. This way he won't be burdened with problems or battery drain .I think this is the best choice. Best wishes .

That might be a good solution

VI is my favorite stable ROM but I'd have to say that MIUI is the best ROM for an elderly person. The large icons, the simplicity, really everything is much easier on it except for the browser (download dolphin instead).
Good luck
Thanks for the good answers
Do you guys think ics would easier than gb?

I think it is opposite. Gb is easier than Ics..also as CM7...If you install CM7 you can install launcherpro or other launcher, and resize big icons on your preferances. i think that ics has much "rigid" interface than cm7.
ics has incorporated those bloatware "beasts" like tweeter, facebook chat,gtalk...etc. etc...so you should think to remove them from rom before installation.just to avoid sporadic popups and notifications that could confuse him...CM7 does not have it. (and it is noot needed to have).
I recommend Hypersensation CM7 .
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that a stock looking Sense Rom like ARHD would be suitable for elders. Sense widgets are pretty user friendly, setup a coupe of home screens (not the default 7). I think that would work. That's whhat I would do if I had to give an android phone to my parents.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk 2
If you are going the MIUI route, gb/ics/jb are practically all similar. From my experience ICS had over 20hour battery where GB had like 12hour so you might want to look into that as well.
I'd go back to stock or install hypermiui (by far the most battery efficient)

Battery lasts for at least two and a half days, and theres not much that he could do to screw up the phone.

so my advice to you would be just try them all till you find 1 you like

I think I may have opened a can of worms. I did read about cm7 and see pros and cons. I have been looking at leedroid's Rom. Mudknot I would like to thank you for your guide very nice. Do you have any recommendation's?

As doo doo said and I have said in other threads, there is no "BEST" rom. They all are good in their own right, and all of them have their downfalls some more then others.
I have flashed all of them, and I like some more then others. Honestly its all personal preference.
Leedroid for stability and battery with all the features working. CM 7 for the stock feeling but has terrible drain TERRIBLE
I like the sense ones.
However I almost always return to a stock. The best to me are stock with all the bloat ripped out. There is no need to OC yet as the phone is plenty fast. Maybe in 4 or 5 months. /Shrug
I've been using RCmixHD for quite some time and I love it. They just realeased a new rom with SENSE 3.0 and it's beautiful. This latest rom is quite new and there are some improvements that I know will come with some time.
As everybody here will tell you, you will need to experiment and make your own decision on which is best for you.
Stock and Inpired Ace for me.
I am loving team phoenix's new rom. Takes the best of cm 7, + lord mods smartass kernel and makes a very smooth and battery efficient offering.

I really like RCMix Kingdom ROM. It is a work in progress, but sense 3.0 is pretty sweet in my opinion. But like others have said, it all comes down to your own personal preferences. Have fun with it and just go flash crazy lol

Read this.....http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/the-complete-review-of-cyanogenmod-7-walkthrough-guide
Cm7 is fast and quite customizable.
Myt4g on pacquiao type roids.miui.panache.
My old Desire with CM7 on it has never been so fast! It's a really nice modified rom that's fast and doesn't have all the Sense bloatware on it.
That being said, I like Sense. And I'm happy with my Sensation now . But I might give CM7 a try just for kicks.
It's vanilla Android with small tweaks that make it great. You have a small ROM that is fast and made by a team of awesome coders.
CM goes way back with the first google phone. So allot of people know it.

I had an Eris before my current DInc2 and cm is crap for both. They have little to NO support for my phone and every time I run their ROM it fails as bad if not worse than the half assed alphas put there. Sure it has cool customization choices, but on my DInc2 it is worthless in my opinion until it is fully functional.
I (and you) should never settle for less than fully functional for something so "popular"

The one good thing to come from CM7 is MIUI - which I'm quite looking forward to trying (although I probably go back to Sense)
Personally I am more of a fan of the CM7 based ROMs that come after. Each developer gets a chance to put there own unique touch to the cm7 based ROMs. I remember from the nexus one days after cm dropped the ROMS came flying in with everyone's personal touch. The CM7 code provides a rock solid base with all features working.
I am looking for a fast, smooth, stable nd good on battery life to go with. Can someone point me in the right direction.

I would say you try by yourself and decide for yourself, Everyone has different opinions and will probably give you their own personal perspective.
You might have a different opinion and like something else or maybe not. just flash the most used ones and see if you like them and go from there.

I agree with this guy here as opposed to the other two members. I've tried BOTH roms listed and they're basically the same. Just very ever so slightly different. I used to use ARHD but then I started using other roms because Mike doesn't update his often. InsertCoin gets updated pretty good but I experience issues once in a while (it's nothing severe though) and it's not a bad rom at all. I'm using bulletproof though because I love all the mods he adds on. It's really up to you, gotta try and find out what you want and like.
Agree that it's up to you to try, test, tune, etc what's best for your needs & likes! Take a deep read in the Development section...happy flashing!
CM7 is the best rom on sensation by far.
CM7.

I started using custom ROMs with my G1 and CyanogenMod. I stuck with that exclusively for a really long time through different devices. Since it has taken a while for CM to come out on the Sensation, I started flashing all kinds of different ROMs. That's the beauty of Android and XDA. You can try all kinds of stuff out and decide what you like the best. I currently use Android Revolution HD 4.1.3 (Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.5) with the Amaze camera. I'll use this until a stable version of CM comes out with a better camera. I also use ADW.Ex launcher. This works for me for now because it has a really nice camera, but I've tried a TON of ROMs. Whatever you do, ALWAYS search for answers, use the appropriate forums (General, Q&A, Themes & Apps) properly, and have fun.

I don't want to give recommedations since there are a couple of awsome mods floating out there...
If you like Sense and eye pleasing colours and animations go with CoreDroid. Wipe battery stats when you flash a new rom (made a big difference for me).
Or is it just me? I love the inquisition rom for this exact reason. IDK, I just don't like it very much. Am I in a lone group with this? What's everyone else's take?
i wish hTC makes their phones as simple as the galaxy nexus, that's why i will flash a "senseless" ICS ROM.
I love AOSP ROMs, not de-sensed ROMs as they contain parts of sense still in them. E.g OpenSensation, nice AOSP ROM...

That won't change the horrible Sense apps. Yes, you could root your phone install an AOSP rom, but you shouldn't have to do that to make your phone work like it's supposed it.
HTC/other OEMS should just give an option to de-sense the phone somehow. If I had a pure-Google experience I wouldn't even need to root my phone.
Again why buy HTC then. The hardware specs are available in many other phones. IMHO.

Love the phone! Had a iPhone a few weeks when my sensation was on service (dust inside the display, got a brand new display for free )
After using a laggy iphone, I realized how much i love the sensation.
It's a sensation... Easy as that.
Same here. My Sensation is 6 1/2 months old, it has no scratches and still looks and feels like on the first day. It's an awesome phone, but the ability to run CM9 makes it still more awesome
I am also running CM9 and got it clocked at 1ghz and hahaha even at this speed is super smooth.
I am really glad that we got CM9, it would be hard to get a phone that doesn't get CM9 support to be honest because these companies overlays are full of bloatware and drain battery super quickly.
The real problem with HTC phones is Sense. I got to have it at like 1.7 to be smooth but then the battery sucks really bad. Then if I clock down to about 1.2 which is when I notice a battery difference, it's all choppy and stuttery.
Just yesterday I played with an HTC One S and I don't really envy anything about it.
And I too feel the same way as a previous poster and that is that I don't feel the need to upgrade.
