Hello fellow XDA-ers!
We have a very interesting opportunity here, and we'll need everybody's input on this one:
At our request, HTC America is going to respond directly, interview/Q&A-style, to a set of questions submitted by XDA. The responses are then going to be posted in an Article on the front page of the site will all the other news.
Now, since this is intended to be in the interest of as many members as possible, we want to open the floor to suggestions from anybody and everybody here, for what questions you would love to see answered by HTC!
We'll be accepting ideas and suggestions in the form of replies to this thread, up through 24:00GMT this coming Friday night. Then, the admins and writing staff will go over all of the submissions, and choose the 20 that we think will generate responses and insights most interesting to our members.
We're not so concerned with how you word the questions, it's the idea that matters...just let us know what's on your mind, and we'll take care of getting them "all pretty"
One thing that we'll request is that this thread is used for posts with either direct ideas for questions or follow-up suggestions to questions already posted. For those of us who have a strong opinion about HTC in general (one way or the other), just try to put it in the form of an inquiry...otherwise it'll be better to open a separate thread to discuss those things. Questions about this process are welcome too, or feel free to PM me if you prefer.
I think we have an awesome opportunity here to get some very interesting perspectives on how the company that's behind the reason we're all here operates, particularly in relation to its most passionate customers!!
Now, to get everybody started, I'll submit this first question, courtesy of memeber snarksneeze:
"There are several Linux-based open source ARM operating systems out there, what makes Android so special from an OEM's perspective, that almost every cell-phone manufacturer is jumping at the chance to use it?"
So get to it!! We're looking forward to a lot of creative responses...that's why we wanted to solicit the entire community at XDA for ideas on this, instead of just letting "management" come up with them I know there's as many unique customer perspectives out there as there are members...so let us know what's on your mind, and we'll get answers for as many of them as we can!! There's a good chance this could open the door for similar opportunities with HTC in the future as well, but we want to make the most of this opportunity while we've got it! We're counting on everyone to help make this as awesome as it can be!
NOTE: While these answers will be coming from HTC America, I think it's fine to ask questions with a global scale, just maybe not any directly relating to other specific markets

4: Are you planning on keeping Windows as your primary platform now that Windows Phone 7 is on its way or are you going to switch your focus to android now that it's the only platform that let's you keep your edge over your competitors in the form of the Sense UI?
5: How big a blow was it for you when you found out that Microsoft weren't going to allow customized user interfaces for WP7?
6: Are you planning on letting users choose which mobile operating system they want on future phones(assuming the hardware works under both)?

7. Is HTC ever going to release a device top spec in line with other manufacturers instead of constantly releasing new devices with little or no update in between, one example would be that htc are still releases devices with 5mp cameras!!
8. Is HTC ever going to provide a driver suitable for our devices to improve graphic performance
Maybe try to find out about the next gen processors (ie. dual core) , and when they will be available.
And also,... when will we get a top of the range android device with a hardware keyboard again. A true successor to the G1/Dream. I've never owned one but feel that it is what my Hero is missing.

The removal of the red earpiece on the Evo... was that HTC's choice or Sprint's choice? It was a small visual feature that I was looking forward to and was disappointed to see removed in the final market version.
Sticking with the Evo, why was the choice made to add extra buttons to the on-screen keyboard? From looking at screenshots, they seem like they would impede typing. What sort of UX testing was done to ensure negligible impact to the end user?
Not a question, but thank you for doing away with the proprietary headphone jack. That was something slightly short of a slap in the face of the user.
As a company that primarily handles hardware, where do you stand on the "mobile platform wars"? The iPhone OS, WP7, and Android all have such markedly different business models. What strengths and weaknesses do you see in each? What development and policy changes would you like to see from all the major players?
Android is an OS that develops rather quickly, and one criticism of the Sense UI is that it forces users to lag behind development until a Sense UI update is pushed. How are you going to deal with keeping users OSes up-to-date as you move forward?

I can answer the 2nd one...HTC was indeed one of the 5 bidders for Palm, but HP finally put up more than everybody else and bought the company. Look for WebOS on printers (no joke!) and other HP hardware soon.
That gaming platform question is awesome! I'm dying to know that as well!

Will HTC in the future write better software and drivers to fully take advantage of the QualComm SoC they are using? For example, the Tytn II was criticized for not having a fully accelerated video/graphics driver (along with each successor after it). The current HTC HD2 and Nexus one have very powerful SoC's with hardware accelerated video codec decoding, will that eventually be taken advantage of by drivers and HTC video players?
Graphically, do you anticipate creating software or drivers that push the full potential of the graphics processing power of the current "Snapdragon" SoC?
(I like to keep my questions device centric).
Another thing I'm wondering about is whether or not they are planning on including an RSS reader into sense in the near future(one of the most important features that is still missing imho)?
My question:-
HTC, will you learn lessons from the continued delays to the new Hero Rom in that development speed needs to be increased and there needs to be better communication with customers/fans

HP already took Palm over...
I have been searching for the ultimate android device and have found it with this phone. The Synapse-One phone is an Ultra Customizable Superphone. You get to choose everything about this device except the screen (4.0" S-LCD) and the Processor (1GHZ).
The best part is that it ships with 2.2 comes with a 3 year world wide warranty, and only costs slightly more than a phone from a carrier would without a contract.
I think that supporting this company is about the best way you can support an open android Platform. As soon as the site is open for Pre-Orders again I am placing one.
According to reports the phone is shipped with root access. I have emailed the company asking some questions about the SOC and GPU on this device. As soon as they answer I will post them here. If this company does well then we could expect to see Customizable Phones available in the future, which is like the ultimate toy any XDA phone super Geek.

I have a similar problem, I want everything.
However, I can say that WP7 in it's current implementation is not what I want in a phone. You are aware that any third party app that wants to have Notifications on the WP7 device will have to set up a server to send those updated to the Microsoft server to then be pushed to the phone. Currently no one has this infrastructure in place. It will be some serious trouble to implement.
I think that WP7 has potential but it will be a year or two before it catches up to Android 2.2 and even iOS in its current implementation.
Come on, This phone comes rooted out of the box with 2.2 and you can customize it!!!!
This phone looks pretty slick. After customizing everything for me, it's approx $550. That's similar to the price of the Nexus One.
I would like to know more about the digitizer/touch panel on it. I assume it supports 2-finger multitouch. But I don't want it to have any limitations like the N1. If it's able to support 5 finger like the Galaxy S, it would be awesome. If I could put a S-AMOLED i would rock! But I assume they don't provide that due to Samsung being low on them and only using them on their own devices.

Let's assume this won't be scam/they won't go bankrupt - they will start shipping not earlier than Q3 2011 (delays are almost guaranteed with small companies like these). By then the technology will be outdated.

Originally the site had SAMOLED as the screen but they changed it. I suppose that is to do with the shortage of them.....
Looks like some new specs should be added to update Synapse's site. Admin at their support forum indicates comittments to specific requests. http://synapsephones.uservoice.com/...Widget&utm_source=synapsephones.uservoice.com
I emailed them also and will post my results here when reveived. How well/timely they respond to us is obviously important at these earliest stages of dev.

Three and a half days later with no response. Synapse has an interesting concept but I won't place an order until reviews come in from those who did. The skeptic in me thinks that Synapse-Phones is merely measuring market interest at this point.

Now over a week and two more emails later, still not a word in reply. Blog seems dead. Order page isn't working. Feedback forum still has a lot of activity.

This is just...For the fun of it. I can enjoy a bit of philosophising once in a while. I was playing around with devices of almost every manufacturer (except Motorola, sorry), and thought about the particular quirks and advantages of smartphones.
It might be nice for me first to zoom out to the platform level. There are a few platforms used right now. WP7, Android, BB, iOS come to mind as the main ones. Most smartphones developed and sold are tailored towards a particular operating system. This defines their capabilities, their limitations, and their general goal during their lifespan.
I will address each briefly:
WP7: With the latest Mango, these phones are tailored to social networking. The Lumia 800, for example, is certainly an impressive device in that capacity.
Android: These phones tend to be for people who want to play around with their OS. They generally offer large touchscreens and fast dual-core processors (the latest phones do, at least). One of the dogmas seems to be multimedia ease. I will ask a question about such phones that I will get back to later: "Is there such a thing as too large?".
BB: These phones and the operating system they run on were designed with security in mind. They offer physical keyboards which are unrivalled. RIM also have the best data technology on the market. I like to think of BBs as having the functionality of bricks, but being as hard to take down as bricks as well. These phones are far behind everyone else, but I would state that they are very stable. They also are, potentially, the best phones. I use "phones" in the forgotten capacity: for making calls. They possess the best radios.
iOS: BE UNIQUE! Well, it somewhat worked until everyone and his grandmother had an iPhone. I, personally, despise lowercase "i"s, so have never been tempted that way. What do they offer? Apps. Many, many, many apps. Need I say more? Apple started out with a brilliant idea of how to sell products to the masses (yes, I am quite fond of The Affluent Society), but they have not improved much upon that idea since its inception.
These are obviously non-exhaustive notes. The general purpose of the information written above is to determine the role of smartphones.
Addressing Android, you have speed and power. But is it necessary? The Galaxy Note is awkward. The Galaxy SII is also reasonably so. These devices try to provide a Web and gaming experience, combined with all-around functionality. Sure, they have large screens in order to provide that experience, but a tablet can perform the same things better (refer to Asus Transformer Prime). Is there a point to those functions on a phone? I want to stress "phone" again, since it seems we have strayed so far from the functions of a phone.
Nokia have been producing quality plain handsets for a long time. They sell many of these to developing countries. Their place and their existence is, I believe, justified. Whether they are needed with WP7 is another matter.
Blackberry have always targeted businesses and sought to provide fast text inputs on their phones. Their devices are built like bricks, as I said previously. The BB infrastructure is more impressive than BB phones, in my opinion. Especially the Data compression.
Apple, well...Apple is Apple.
I can only peg down three categories: BB for infrastructure, Nokia for supplying the world with phones, Apple and Android for experimentation and multimedia aspects.
So what is the role of smartphones? Are they too developed for their own good? Typing on a 4.5'' screen in landscape mode will never fail to annoy me. Apple's watchful gaze is creepy. RIM's antipathy towards progress is strange.
This is actually quite well done and addresses the various brands and OS' without being extremely biased that i would be use to=D Bravo and I agree they all have their place

Hoping that a few people will want to post their opinions and discuss. After all, we are passionate about smartphones. Otherwise we would not be on here.
Thought I would add something on my "brick" line of thinking. I and a friend got two different phones at approximately the same time in 2008. I got the BlackBerry Storm 9530. He got the HTC Dream (or G1, whichever you prefer to call it). Mine looks, feels, functions as if brand new. His is in a sorry state.
Yeah , I understand your pain of large phones , but some people just don't like tablets and want phones to have tablet-like functionality .

For site about smartphones, I would have thought more people would be interested in this topic. But I suppose I am targeting obsessions...Try telling an iPhone user that iPhones are not the best, or that they are not particularly unique.
What is a phone??? Lol but seriously I do agree we have strayed far away from the cellphone era. We have entered a new age that began in 2005, which I like to refer to as the connected age. With the growing number of smartphone users it is easy to track down anyone you want. Everyone is connected to everyone. Our phones grow larger in size every 6months. I remember when I wanted the smallest most compact flip phone. The bigger it was the uglier it was. Now.... anything under 4.3 inches I cant even use lol. I predict in ten years smartphones will be non existing. It will be converted to tabs. U can buy a tablet for half the price of a brand new sgs2.

I disagree with tablets being "better" that smartphones or smartphones being replaced by tablets, not everyone can or want to travel with a tab everywhere
A phones portability will trump most of times(a quick pic, quick vid, listening to music, browsing in the crapper,etc)
What i mean is that your not always able to go with a carrying bag(well girls can) or a notebook sized thing in your hands, thats when the mini tab in ur pocket comes to use
Might not be as good as a tablet for somethings but its still performs ok and makes calls, and its very easy to carry around
On the other hand, if the tablets are to replace something, is the laptop

OP: you don't seem to understand that people in this era want more than just a phone, if you are complaining that smartphones these days are too advanced to be a phone, then go and get a nokia from 1998 and stop posting on XDA.
The only argument I have is that in which you seem to feel that Blackberry devices are superior in terms of security. I disagree, and also feel that a SPoF has finally shown blackberry devices to be vastly inferior in terms of both security and content delivery.
Food for thought: the US Gov't has finally decided to branch out from the bricks of yesteryear, and now are starting to allow iOS, W*, and A* devices on the AEN with server side security policy implementation. That's saying a lot since they've previously only allowed a BBD on the AEN as all other devices "couldn't be secured". Kinda hard to secure a RIM server in Canada...

It is not that I am a great fan of BlackBerry. It is just that I am very uneasy about Androids. What is to say you will not be charged $1,000 on your next bill due to an exploit allowing premium text messages to be sent from your device without your knowledge?
Yes, I have a bias towards security. We have Facebook and Twitter, which are used as breeding grounds for all sorts of mayhem...Obviously all they have done is displayed all our private information to the whole world. That is really going to be regretted by everyone using those services...Sooner or later. We have the multimedia Androids which ignore fundamental issues and have grown too large to comfortably use. HAVE YOU NEVER HAD TO REALLY STRETCH YOUR FINGER TO REACH AN ICON, OR USE ANOTHER HAND?
Regarding tablets, are we really suggesting that they can beat laptops at anything important? If the general stream is towards mass procrastination, tablets have helped us achieve that. But I do not see the next 10 years seeing tablets replacing laptops.
Well, i still think the future of the laptop and notebook is the tablet

I've been a fan of Smartphones for a while. I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace, mainly because I couldnt afford the SII at the time. I like the Bigger phones cause i can use it for reading, watching media, surfing the web, looking at pictures, etc...
Personally I'm hoping to get a galaxy note for my birthday next year as its perfect for everything I like to do with my phone.
For me, smartphone is a universal device which is computer replacement anywhere, where there are no computers.
I've lurked around these forums for a while, occasionally dabbling in various models that I've owned or had an interest in. I've now decided that it's high time a complete fleet of apps were developed with CM in mind.
Introducing tinyApps!
The concept is relatively simple. Cyanogen is often a means of experiencing a newer version of Android on a device that is otherwise unsupported. For example: I have an HTC Desire Z as a daily driver. I run CM10.1 (or android 4.2.2) and it performs pretty damned well. I've also owned much less powerful phones, such as the Optimus ME P350 from LG, on which I ran 4.0.4, and found most apps very demanding.
I'm going to be developing, over the course of several months, the following apps:
tRadio
tMusic
tWeb
tFiles
tFilms
and last, but by no means least, tGallery.
These are all applications that I have found to be reasonably demanding, or unsuccessful in meeting my expectations.
I'm gonna get paid!
I'm not going to canvas for donations, that isn't my style. Instead, I'm going to fund these apps by adverts. I'll be sure to keep these as unintrusive as possible, eg:
No full-screen adverts (if possible)
In the same place across all applications
placed so as to avoid accidental clicks
as static as possible, to avoid excess data charges
removable by a fee made as small as possible - e.g 50p UK sterling
I'm very keen to hear suggestions and feature requests, although please keep in mind that these apps are designed to be as small as possible. If all goes well, we can perhaps push for them to be included as part of CyanogenMod (Nobody ever said I wasn't aspirational, no?).

Introducing tinyApps!
The concept is relatively simple. Cyanogen is often a means of experiencing a newer version of Android on a device that is otherwise unsupported. For example: I have an HTC Desire Z as a daily driver. I run CM10.1 (or android 4.2.2) and it performs pretty damned well. I've also owned much less powerful phones, such as the Optimus ME P350 from LG, on which I ran 4.0.4, and found most apps very demanding.
I'm going to be developing, over the course of several months, the following apps:
tRadio
tMusic
tWeb
tFiles
tFilms
and last, but by no means least, tGallery.
These are all applications that I have found to be reasonably demanding, or unsuccessful in meeting my expectations.
I'm gonna get paid!
I'm not going to canvas for donations, that isn't my style. Instead, I'm going to fund these apps by adverts. I'll be sure to keep these as unintrusive as possible, eg:
No full-screen adverts (if possible)
In the same place across all applications
placed so as to avoid accidental clicks
as static as possible, to avoid excess data charges
removable by a fee made as small as possible - e.g 50p UK sterling

Interesting concept but really just an empty thread. It would be awesome if you could update others on what the project looks like and more detail!

Creating a Sony styled Small apps requires something along the Sony framework for those things to work so gd luck!
Look out! tRadio is coming sometime next month!

Thinking GREEN these days??? Here is a really pertinent issue... thousands of perfectly good and very recent high-tech devices will be in the LANDFILL very soon, if the maker won't release some firmware files so that a few civic minded people can re-compile and freely distribute the (open-source!!) operating system the device SHIPPED WITH to a current version that isn't full of security bugs, and rapidly making apps OBSOLETE. As in "sorry, can't install this app, your version of OS is too old..."
Kobo 10 HD is not a throwaway bit of tablet hardware... it has a Quadcore CPU, 2 gigs of RAM, wifi, miracast, and a beautiful ten inch screen with 2500+ horizontal resolution.
I have one myself, and have given away another two as Christmas gifts.
"There ought to be a law" protecting landfills from this kind of stuff. And protecting the rights of consumers, who paid a lot of money for these items that the manufacturers have quickly ABANDONED.
I can't imagine how much "Carbon" was spent in the development, manufacturing, and distribution of these devices - which if the firmware was opened up to the public, could easily have a useful lifespan of another ten to twenty YEARS.
How many cheap "disposa-tablets" will people have to burn through in twenty years? How much bigger the waste of everyone's resources ( not to mention landfills)... This one is an excellent example of modern WASTE at its most un-necessary!
Should be made a test case, and eventually set a real LEGAL PRECEDENT for thousands of others...
