Please give a fellow Droid'r some info..... - General Questions and Answers

Hey Guys
My Phone: SGS2 I9100P
Android V: 2.3.5
Baseband V: I9100PXXKI3
Kernel V: [email protected] #2
Build Num: GINGERBREAD.XXKJ4
I've been trying to understand how to Root my android phone, and all i have been achieving is a headache followed by repeating over posts mentioning the same things that throw me off
What is a Kernel ? - and what Kernel should i use that is same with my phone ? (if any)
What is a ROM ? - ive played ROMs on Emulators (gameboy emulator - pokemon) is this similar ? wtf ?
What is CWM ? - and why do i see it in every post of a kernel or rom ? im guessing it some sort of backup - but if i was to root my phone with a new kernel how would i use CWM to restore it back to original if i can only install it after a kernel is on =S ?
i also found a guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
explaining i can root my phone without having to flash it? but cannot for the life of me make out what the guy is on about >_<
Instructions
For phones affected by the superbrick bug (i9100, N7000) and that has a stock recovery accepting update.zip files (most phones with a temporary cwm.zip file at Clockworkmod site:
Quote:
You can flash the attached files directly in stock recovery 3e, no need to cwm:
Download the root file:
- Root_SuperSU.0.95.Only-signed.zip for Chainfire SuperSU (the one that comes with CF_Root) without busybox.
- Root_SuperSU.0.95-FreeSpace.zip for Chainfire SuperSU without busybox (use only if you have issues with previous one, usually for phones having a /system partition with 0 free space).
- Root_SuperSU.0.95-Busybox.1.20.2-S2-signed.zip to install superSU + busybox v1.20.2 from Linus Yang.
- Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2-Update1-signed.zip if you prefer the classic ChainsDD superuser + Busybox from Linus Yang.
- Root_Busybox_1.20.2_Only_XXX.zip to install only Busybox from Linus Yang.

YELLOW = What ?

hang on...
after some searching i found this method :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1499331&highlight=unroot
seems to be pretty safe, and i would like someone to explain to me:
if i root with this method can i use all rooted apps ?
can i edit the theme of my phone like some others have done.
why should i use a kernel over this method ?
thank you

Try super one click. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
It should work for your phone. I'm gonna find the terminology thread for you.

A bigger version of the thread that iKoolkid linked to can be found here - Android Slang.
I strongly recommend you read through both threads, and even though there's a ton of information there, it'll help you learn an unbelievable amount.
Velcro. What a rip off!

thanks guys, just to confirm - super one click will allow me to overlock, edit theme, play emulators and some more funky stuff right ?

For over clock and themes, you need to at least have cm7/9/10, aokp ROM installed.

so this guide wouldnt work? :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
that would just install the ROOT and APP downloader ?
what if i used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
would that enable me to use over clocking and themes?
thanks for all the replies

If things like this are confusing you then maybe you should rethink running a custom ROM. Flashing your device can void any warranty and if you screw up it is up to you to fix it. IF it can be fixed.

Is it possible to make internet snappier?

I just rooted my phone yesterday and removed all the bloatware (big thanx to Lumin30)
Now I'm wondering if I can make it even snappier without flashing too much stuff on it.. since I'm too new to this business and would prefer having my phone mostly stock

Boat browser is the fastest I've used. DL from market.
If you have cwm installed. I'm assuming you do since you're rooted. Dsexten's adrenalin shot and the scroll mod can work wonders for making things snappy while maintaining a stock phone.

For actual data speed, you can probably make it faster by leaving your phone on CDMA mode only (keeps you locked in 3G/4G). If left in Auto mode, it will revert to EDGE when you aren't using data.
I feel like it makes a noticeable difference, since your phone won't need to switch back and forth.
As for the actual speed of a browser, I've been using Dolphin since I got my phone. It's very snappy.

and its WCDMA to the post above
Thank's aren't asked for but appreciated
Thanx.. can u please tell me a way to flash that... I'm new to this. My phone is rooted thru superoneclick.
I'm on stock gingerbread. I would love to be able to run that rom since it will free up a lot of system storage... is it glitchy at all?

It will be easy for you. First download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market.

Read the first link in my signature where it talks about SGS Kernel Flasher.
ADD:Alex - Let me know if the directions were clear or if you need any additional help.
It was somewhat clear... I appreciate u making that thread and taking ur time to answer but I'm still somewhat clouded... I need to install a kernel with vodoo lag fix before I install a rom.. when I go to the link of vodoo lag fix it says attention its still buggy and vodoo sound maybe coming soon... all of that is making me somewhat worried... but the rom flashing steps are confusing to me since I'm like a blind baby to this flashing stuff.

If you don't want to use the kernel then you can use KJ1. I haven't had a problem with the kernel. And when you flash the custom ROM it will have that same kernel -- just updated. You only flash that kernel to get CWM to flash the ROM. When you flash the ROM it comes with a kernel that will overwrite the kernel you flash with SGS.
And Voodoo sound is not the same as Voodoo lagfix.
You just need to follow the direction to get where you want. If you think some of the directions are clear... then tell me which one's and how. I will take a look at and see if I can make them clearer.

Check your mounts in mounts and storage and read the OP of ROM for correct mounts – U=Unmount / M=Mount. I had to change some coming fresh out of the box.
o Then choose 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from scard', then go to bottom, find ROM you copied over, select install and wait.
thats a lil confusing...
and to double check the first step:
all i have to do is download Subtly Modified Stock for T959V KJ6 v0.1.1-rc1 and flash that kernel with kernel flasher from the market? simple as that?
Yes on the kernel.
Don't worry about the mounts. I need to change that. The aroma installer will handle that for you now. What ROM are you going to flash?
ICBINB 2.3.7 since I read its mostly stock with no theming and is super fast and only uses 46mb internal space since it heavily debloated... would u recommend it?
BTW thanx again man!

Yes.
Go reread the guide. Take notes when you go through. PM me anything you think needs to change or be added. If you have flashed the kernel - just flash it - follow the directions to flash the ROM and you are good to go. Take note of the steps in the Aroma Installer you do and PM those also and I will add them to the guide. Aroma Installer is what you will see after you select install for the ROM.

And do u need to extract the icbinb rom zip file? Or just put it like that in the root of my sd? Before that do I need to wipe anything? Thanx a lot again

i've already seen the thread of amit bagaria's cwm root.
it has no proper instructions in it.
would you mind giving me the step-by-step instructions on how to use it?
for the Cyanogen MOD, thanks for that link.
been searching for that.
but there's a little problem though, it seems that i can't go to Recovery, i've already hold the Power + Volume Up + Home button before i turn on my phone, but after the 1st Samsung boot appears it just shows a black screen and when i've let go of those three buttons, the Samsung boot will appear again then the animated boot appears then it continues to the menu.

Using Time Warner Cable TV app & online Banking on I997 running ICS

I am new & this is my first post. I have spent all weekend reading these forums and installing mods - GB & ICS. What I would like... is to be able to use Time Warner Cable 's TV app for Droid which allows me to watch cable TV and manage my DVR *and* use my Online Banking app to deposit checks. Both these require that the device not be rooted and TWC TV requires ICS. Is there a way to unroot an ICS ROM that is currently on my rooted phone - while still keeping all the themes/apps etc that the rooted MOD gives me (except SU,) and if so, how do you recommend I go about doing this? (It doesn't appear that using something like OneClick is going to do this for me.) I have gone from Froyo to rooted GB, Infinitum's ICS 1.1.1, then to UCLB3-CWM and would like to try ICS again...
Is there a way to take a ICS mod and install it in such a way that it appears as UNrooted stock ICS yet keeps the perks (except SU) ?
Thanks for your time and thoughts... Jami
Welcome... there is not any way to be unrooted and have ics on the infuse at the same time. Sorry, I know that is not the answer you were wanting to hear. Regards.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Actually...I think it is possible to have an unrooted ics Rom...most have it built in already but what gives the Rom root is "Su" and "superuser"
1) Get a Rom
2) Open it up with 7zip or another archive program
3) go to /system/xbin and delete the file named "Su"
4) go to /system/apps and delete the apk named "superuser"
5) put the modified Rom on your phone (I say modified cause you deleted two files)
6) flash like normal in recovery...follow instructions from the Roms op
If my theory is correct you should now be on ics with out root...ill be getting my infuse any minute now (or hour...) And ill be able to test it myself if you don't want to...you do risk getting bootloops by deleting the above files...you may also lose some of the ics Roms functions...

Theory appears sound and correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like the OP wants the functionality of a phone that is both rooted (TWC app) and unrooted (all other apps mods themes that require root)...not simply unrooted ICS.
It appears to me that a choice needs to be made between running rooted for one app or unrooted for everything else the OP wants.
There is another thread floating around here on the Infuse board about the TWC app requiring an unrooted phone. I saw it few days ago...someone there may have found a solution.
Sent from a de-FUNKed Infuse
Thanks MG- it was the likely loss of some functionality that would not allow the 2 apps that she wants to perform, was the reason for my answer. I hope you are right, although I will feel terrible about giving someone a wrong answer.

I know the newest version of superuser has an option to temporary unroot. Not sure if this would work for the apps you are asking about but I'm assuming it was added for situations like this.
You just open the app and swipe over to the info tab, which is on the fat left I believe. Then there is a check box for temp unroot.
Hope this helps bc it would def be the easiest solution.

I have SU v.94 on a custom rom on my SGS3 and there is an option to cleanup for permanent unroot. Don' t see anything about temp unroot but then I may be on a different version than you are speaking of.

SuperSU and I think superuser both have options to disable root. If its a Cyanogen based ROM, there's another option to disable root in the settings menu.
Root ≠ custom ROM

When I go to the app info of Superuser, it says version 3.2. I am on jb tho so that may b the difference. I'm using the version that came with CM10.
Thought the option was there on the newest version when I was on ics too tho but not 100% sure.

Another option is the app "OTA Root Keeper".

Well...if you want, I can make a flashable root package...as in all that will be flashed is su and superuser...re-enabling root, so you could delete both su and superuser with a root file explorer when you need unroot and when you need root just flash the root package...kinda time consuming and a pain if your gonna be using those apps often...but its an option...
But yeah, the disable root option is available in my htc vivids superuser which is running ics...so try that first, or some of the other listed suggestions...

Just confirming what benbos_06 posted. I'm running superuser 3.1.3 and there is a temporary unroot option there.

Interesting.. good find / may be workable for OP's needs.
Wow - thanks for all the replies!
Given all the advice, and considering my options - I think the way to go is to see if I can use a stock ICS rom (if that exisits - un mod'ed) on my Infuse. So I'll forgo the extras of a mod but I will be able to get the TWC TV app & the Banking functionality I want. Thanks to Smokestack's comment I did some more poking around and found a link to the hacked TWC TV apk for rooted phones and tablets in case anyone's interested. That's nice but it only gets me half way there.
Would anyone like to recommend a stock or almost stock ICS that I can use for my Infuse? Then I will take MG2195 directions and put them to the test Thanks, Jami
that's a kind offer but I'm hoping to either find a rom without SU or one I can turn SU off entirely on.

Most everyone will have their favorite and all that I have flashed have been good. The one, imho, that seems most stable is Entropy512's build, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601844
Try 3 or 4 and you, too will have a favorite.

[Tutorial] How to get a bugfree ICS (expected)on your SGR

Warning: Using ODIN on ICS may brick your phone!
This tutorial is for those who are currently having issues with this ICS update and the phone is very unstable on it.
1. Restore to a GB rom. U can flash using odin but other users are saying that it may brick ur phone.. Do it on your own risk. I have done it with no problems. Indian users do flash zskk5 2.3.6. For other users flash zcla1 or xwla4.
2. Root it. Then install busybox.
3. Use efs backup pro, a windows software, to backup your efs partition. Dont worry, its free..
4. Backup ur sd card and other data.
5. Repartition using apx mode using the unbrick tutorial.
6. Flash a GB rom specified earlier.
7. Again root n install busybox.
8. Restore efs using efs backup pro.
9. Install cwm and restore ICS.
10. Do a factory reset.
Thats it!
If you find it helpful, i am open to recieving thanks!
If you love XDA, please purchase the premium app.

How can u claim that after doing this ICS will be brick free and bug free . Just using unbrick tool will turn emmc immortal seems legit
provide sources or explain this in details.

I must say that you really put the devices under risk.Sorry to say this.Doing wipes/factory reset is the main cause of brick and the same applies to nandroid restore.Odin is considered safe but since 1 guy said he bricked using Odin,I'm not sure if he flashed after his device was affected or the Odin made it.
As of now, those who are in ics,do not wipe or restore backups.stay where you are.

I cannot explain this but it really worked for me.. I have tried every possible way to make my phone stable but this was the only way which worked. Just shared something which i found fruitful but if you dont find it useful u can tell me an another way to do it.. I m cool with anything..

U r provding wrong information to other users, u have mentioned that follow this tut to get brick free ICS, also part of this post are encouraging peoples to use odin on ICS which is claimed dangerous by other user. this can harm peoples around here. After following this tut peoples will be careless about brick bug and might be brick their devices.
We are here to help each other and share but do not share things which could harm others.
Better edit out this post.

Dude is that ok now..?

Dude NEVER recommend factory reset (especially via CWM which is the case here) when dealing with brickbug. It's ok to share your experience, I understand you just tried to help but in such particular case we must be extremely careful, and we cannot think it worked for me once...it will be safe for all others. No, it doesn't work that way. Data wipe is known to be the most common trigger of brickbug. There is already a good thread: [CAUTION][ICS]Read before flashing ICS, and look at Entropy512's posts. He's I guess the best xda-expert in that matter.
And about using Odin... I haven't carried any of those bricked phones in my hand so I cannot state anything for sure, but I'm up to 90% sure that damage was already present before Odin was used (since problems started before). It's highly unlikely that Odin itself can trigger the brick. However problems could become more evident after Odin were trying to write to damaged partition. Any single case has been reported where using of Odin itself was considered as the one that caused damage of partition/chip.
It's a shame that you guys don't have custom ICS-kernels, that would make it much easier.
Yes...Entropy is the guy who first found the bug and showed us some light on it.
OT:LOL...we take the pride that Brick bug first showed up on us(Note users)

[Q] To root or not to root..thats the question!

Hey guys,
since more than a month i am using the xperia active from Sony Ericsson and i ve still guarantee on it.
It s an awesome smartphone, but sometimes the RAM is overloaded and it starts to lag.
Then the battery works for just a day, because of the background-apps, then i ve to charge it again... really annoying
Thats why i want to root my smartphone. Actually i ve ICS(4.0.4) on it (before it was 2.3 or sth.) and i would like to keep it, but on it i want superuser rights. Therefore i found "zergrush" from doomlord, but in other threads i just read thats for Android 2.2/2.3 ...
Is it possible to root my phone without loosing my guarantee (to make root "nearly" unseen after unroot, in case of warranty) on that device?
(sorry for my bad english, i hope you understood my situation and give me some answers )
greetings Red
You can try rooting using Doomlords method for ICS
Flash a stock kernel of 4.0.3
Root it using Doomlords kit
PS its a batch file
Flash back 4.0.4 kernel
Done !!!

[ROOT][FTF][locked/unlocked]Neo/Neo V Official 4.0.4 ICS 4.1.B.0.431; 4.1.B.0.587
This is for Neo
But yours is also similar phone so might work
Try at your own risk
I am not responsible for any damage....
So read a few threads beforehand !

Noo, dont root. Youll get stuck in fastboot and spend $12 on repairs!

Whether you're going to root it or not is up to u. However, if u do root and u want to make it unseen or unroot, flashing an official stock rom removes the root data.
i read a thread that made a few things clear, i cant remember who posted it (sorry) but it just said that if they cant prove that u rooting your phone is the cause of whatever wrnt rong with your phone, they will still have to fix it under the warranty.
I also never heard of anyone messing up their android as a result of rooting.
Im not saying jump into it and root your android, be careful as we are always warned that their are risks onvolved and developers knows best

For sure root it´s the best option for anyone that like to customize the system.
You should try superoneclick its a program which basically roots your your phone for you, gives you superuser and there shouldn't be drastic changes to your OS either
google it and download then go to youtube and follow a tutorial such as youtubeDOTcom/watch?v=lD4_wAj1WIY (sorry cant post links yet)
As for warranties I'm not sure but this is the safest and easiest method I'm aware of
but you should probably make sure it works on your phone and make a backup before you try it
